09 September 2005, 09:26 PM

Yeah, you're right Noob. After I looked around in the threads I noticed that aswell.
especially for the older contest. And I saw many people remove their dragon ideas, and made something completly different.

ok, thanx =)

BTW. Quote from rules:
The key theme of this challenge is the portrayal of something that is truly a spectacle - something both extraordinary, but within the realm of possibility. A once in a lifetime event.

So that means no science fiction\fantasy.
So this is deffinatly not for the last entry :hmm:

well well. I need to stat over again then :applause:

09 September 2005, 02:02 AM

09 September 2005, 02:48 AM

hmmm I think that you may be able to get away with dragons and creatures such as those it just depends how it is portrayed, if you portray it really well people could believe that it is an even that has happened.

Also I think there are some things that are border line fantasy like mythology and legends.

Keep it going, can't wait to see more from you! :D

09 September 2005, 09:02 AM
nah com, sciene fiction and fantasy is allowed,it just has to be believable, giant orges aren't real but lord of the rings made them believable.

09 September 2005, 02:22 PM
Hepp! kult se enda en norsk p cgtalk, lo meg i hel av den hunde videon du hadde p hjemmesiden din.. digger stilen din.

Your sketch looks good, but I figured i shouldnt comment on it if you'r going in a new direction anyway. I also started with a "dragon rider" for my master and servant entry. But then I thought it was to "over-done" and went in a entirely other direction. I also have plans however to finish the old dragon concept some day.

My best advice right now is that you shoul just paint whatever YOU feel like painting. The end result will become much better and even if it's abit "cliche" or it has been done before, try to push the limits and make another view on the topic you choose. :)

Keep it up! I'll be following you'r thread.

09 September 2005, 03:29 PM (

I canceled the dragon concept for now, and created 3 other sketches instead.
which one do you like the best?

09 September 2005, 03:39 PM
Thanx for the advice am7=)
Yeah. I was looking at your "Master and servant". I realy think you should finnish that dragon pic someday. (though I made my dragon rider before I saw yours. That just shows how often that idea is used ^^)

I look forward seeing your entry aswell. Im definatley gonna follow yours aswell

09 September 2005, 03:40 PM
Cool! I like the second one. some cool ideas there, keep it going!

09 September 2005, 03:49 PM
Thanx enialadam=)
I think I like that one the best too.
Ill create a new drawing from that consept sketch then, and add some colours..

09 September 2005, 04:01 PM
yeh the second one looks great!

09 September 2005, 03:58 PM (

I chose the middle consept for now, and started to fill in some basic colour to see where this is going..

09 September 2005, 04:03 PM
It is amazing how many people alread have work on the challenge. Best of Luck to you.

09 September 2005, 05:46 PM
looking excellent com! no crits just yet

09 September 2005, 06:26 PM
Cool!! This is coming along great! I can't wait to see more progress.

Nice work!

09 September 2005, 06:35 PM
Cool Idea, I will be checkin in later, holla!

09 September 2005, 09:44 PM
I like this idea, have you decided if it's the final thing you want to go with?

Anyway, some comments about the composition. As the topic is spectacular of this challenge, I feel that you could try to push the limits abit more here. Instead of doing an overview shot, you might consider placing the camera in a frog-perspective view - showing closeups of the people underneath the ship/waterfall at the bridge. And then you see the ship at the top of the waterfall above them.

You could try to put the camera down on the ground on the bridge, looking up towards the waterfall/ship and at the same time showing the emotion and expression at the peoples faces. (you could even put it behind beneath the bridge, as you could paint people on their way to jump out from the bridge into the water). It's an hard thing to do, do draw perspective at that angle and still get the objects required into the picture in order to tell the story. But I think it could be worth the effort. Anyway, you should tryout different compositions - just keep it loose and block out the main shapes. Try to think of where the camera should be placed in order to achieve the correct mood and effect from you'r image when people look at it. :)

Anyway, keep it up!

09 September 2005, 06:09 PM (

I got some tips for adjusting the angle, so I did. I also changed the bridge into a "swaying" bridge to get a more dynamic feel into the image.

Is it allright?

09 September 2005, 06:12 PM
wow! I like this new angle a lot. Nice work! :)

09 September 2005, 06:15 PM
i dunno if u'd understand this, but maybe we shud see more of underneath the ship....ah i can't explain.

but i like this new angle better!!

09 September 2005, 06:45 PM
yeah. I know what you mean.
I would have to twist the angles even more, so I can still se the overside of the bridge.
Ill try to make a new one.

09 September 2005, 08:20 PM (

Yet another new angle and concept.
Im combining the ship with 4 winged cratures who are draggin the bridges apart, and pulling the ship down the waterfall..

09 September 2005, 08:57 PM
I think I prefer the other concept before this one :) I liked the angle and perspective more. :)

09 September 2005, 09:13 PM
WOOT Comlock, I see your hard at work buddy. I have to agree with Enialadam here and say that you should go with the previous angle. It much more dramatic , kind of creeps up on you.

09 September 2005, 09:42 PM (

I kinda like this one also..
Quick base colours and some stars to bring in some extra mood..

So many consepts now...

09 September 2005, 09:43 PM
yeah, I agree. I like this one better.
There's something strange with the perspective on the last one

09 September 2005, 09:44 PM

09 September 2005, 10:38 PM
 4 winged creatures where in my idea, damn u stealing my ideas!!!

gggrrrr *kills com*

09 September 2005, 02:17 AM

Brilliant ideas you come up with! Its hard to believe that you dont do this for a living; anyways I agree with past posts in saying that the 2nd the last one is deff the best choice for your piece.

I also feel that the water under the ship looks a little hard/flat might i dare say. I think there should be more splashing water and ya kno overall chaos underneath it (falling stones/parts of waterfall, deff more splashing, maybe some ppl falling off it???)

Anyways, keep up the Brilliant work man! Your gonna come out on-top, i can feel it!

09 September 2005, 11:08 AM
WOW very spectacular !
I like the last one. Really nice camera angle. It gives a great sense of excitement. Great work! good luck!

09 September 2005, 05:06 PM
Thax all.

And ColbyBuss. I know the water looks flat on the pictures. This is just a sketch, where I place the colours around quickly to see the shape and composistion more clearly.
So all the small fx like smoke, water particles, shadows, highlights, volumetric shadows and falling rocks, are gonna be added later.
Ill paint over everything when Im gonna start painting this picture for real ;)

09 September 2005, 01:48 PM
interesting idea.nice work so far.

09 September 2005, 02:55 PM (

Yet another concept..
Thought I might try a little crazy x-mass theme, since the deadline was in december..

09 September 2005, 02:59 PM
hahah looks excellent man,i like!

09 September 2005, 06:35 PM (

Did some colouring, and painted temporarly motionbluur effects at the end.

09 September 2005, 06:45 PM
u have a rather dull colour pallette for a *christmas scene*

but its too early to say anything, looks like it will be great.

09 September 2005, 10:10 PM
yeah. You're right...
I'll paint some more saturated colours then.
thanx =)

09 September 2005, 10:13 PM (

here are some more colouring.
saturated and repainted the colours more, since the last one was to dull..

09 September 2005, 10:20 PM
looks real cool.

i know its a night scene, but the colour still seems a lil, desaturated.don't be afraid to use sum more saturated tones.

apart from that its looking real excellent!

09 September 2005, 10:24 PM
try using, super hot colors like electric green, blue, yellow, red, pink, color at it's purest! never hurts to try something, right?  You can always fix it!

09 September 2005, 10:56 PM
Great dynamic:) It's gonna be good :)

09 September 2005, 03:25 AM
nice job, love those dragons, don't know about the cat, stick with dragons,
very cool, have fun, :applause:

09 September 2005, 06:07 AM
A Christmas Tree Monster? That's so bizarre and original... I love it! And hey, even if you don't win the Challenge, it'll be over in December and you'll have your holiday cards all ready to go! :)

Only comments I would make on it are that the composition feels all pushed towards the left, leaving the right side too empty. What if you flipped the foreground sleigh so that it were on the lower right insead of the left? Also, might be nice to see some more Christmas-tree-like accoutrements on the tree-monster: Some dangly balls, strings of lights, something to push it even further...

Anyhow, hope this one gets developed more. Good luck!

09 September 2005, 09:45 AM
I just love the concept! Somone from "movie for kids making" department should steal it from you :P

09 September 2005, 10:08 AM
Haha! Cool Idea! :D

09 September 2005, 10:19 AM
Thanx Noob and Beelow for the colour suggestions. I dont think I would have pushed the colour more towards higher saturations without your comments.

Korline: thanx. I was trying to be more original, so I stopped working on the dragon.
And the cat is supposed to be an evil x-mass tree monster ^^

Walrus: Yeah, youre right. Ill move the sleigh to the right. Thanx for telling me=)
I saw the picture in the mirror, So now I see it aswell

OmeN2501: =) thanx you. Hehe, maby this idea has been made allready, but I havent seen this sort of idea before. It would be realy cool if I was the first one who created the idea for a evil christmass tree though =) (btw, has anyone seen a living christmass tree in a movie\comic or something?)

enialadam: Thanx=) Glad you liked the idea

09 September 2005, 04:36 PM
Haha, cool idea! I like this alot better than the last, you could work some on the composition though I think. Keep it up!

09 September 2005, 09:14 PM
huh, creepy stuff, I like it :) I would just consider a bit about the composition... its too empty on the right side and coz of that not so well balanced. I suggest u to move the creature to the right, and spin it so it goes diagonaly to the left towards the santa. good luck!

10 October 2005, 02:32 PM (

I changed a bit more on the composistion, and made more saturated colours.

10 October 2005, 01:11 PM
I still love this idea! hoho! and the new composition works sligthly better aswell.

I miss the reindeer though, think they could be nice to add more depth into you'r composition - especially if you put them in the foreground. I guess you have considered it aswell, and I think the problem by doing so, would be on how to solve it so the focus stay on santa and his little helpers.

Keep it up!
