I wached all the entries so far and I noticed that if there was a city scene something was falling down in the sketches. Pretty depressing I thought. I wouldn't like to fall (not because of falling itself but because of the 'splat'). So I desided to make somebody to rise up on the sky.
I have never been too good with pen and paper and this is something I made in couple of minutes. There will be people on the streets and the guy will have a mouth. But that will happen later. The thing in his hand (yes that's a hand) is a can of something to drink. Haven't desided what he likes as a drink.

Its hard to make out whats in the middle of the sketch, maybe put a bit more detail and shadow into it, with some hard pencil lines?? :D keep'em comming!

Change to plans!
The first sketch might work in 2D but I'm doing 3D! So I made another one.
This one is a man riding a small rocket or a missle. Maybe he's going somewhere, maybe he's just "hanging around". Maybe he even has a map and binoculars. But I'm pretty sure he will ride his rocket in a city. But where is he going?

So. My scanner didn't agree to work so you don't get my final scetch. At least not yet. Instead you get step one in modelling. But for all those who would like to know more about the scene I'm working on I can tell you this:
The scene is about a pilot on a small rocket (or a missile) flying through a modern city. I try to capture some 1950's athmosphere and mixe it with eternal rush of today.
I started from the pilot. Here's his head. The head will be cowered with a cap so I didn't pay attention with the ears, and I quess he doesn't need hair.

I think he should be shooting for the moon, or some big unknown world. Have it take place just after sunset so the night sky is visible, maybe he has just launched... Man I can see this one...

So far the pilot looks this. He needs glowes and a little tweaking. Then I start modelling other humans. The texturing won't be easy...

It is hard to make hands to look like glows (yes those are not hands themself). I have also added the cap and the glasses (need some hc tweaking). Tweaked the face, the jacket and the pants. The texture picture only shows the colors.
Wondering if I should give him a scarf.
I've been working tith the street the pilot is flying on. I don't have any pics for you yet but I try to post them next week.

Interesting twist, make sure you add plenty of details on the ground like cars in traffic, ppl waking on the street etc. Since I'm also making a city it probably be a good idea to pull out the spiderman movies and take a look at those city shots again. They are awesome.

There's a piece of the street. Couple of crossroads. Skyscrapers. A few older buildings. Maybe a tree or two...

Added buildings (Cirrus and Innova), plants in front of Fortum building and street lamps.
It still needs traffic signs and traffic lights. (People, cars and stuff comes later too.)
You'll get closeups and details when I texture the scene.

Here it is. The street.
Buildings and the road need textures. I guess I texture only the nearest buildings because no one is going to see textures from the buildings near the fareest crossroads.
YafRay Crashes when I try render the scene (too meny objects) so I have to use Blender internal renderer untill I have joined the textured and surfed objects together.

The first building (216) is now textured.
I hurt my mouse hand past week so it took some time to make this.
There might be some updates for this picture in the future but for now it's done. Time to texture building 217.

Here's the same guy with some texture.
I was wondering should I texture the farest people with some heavy textures if they are so far that no one could see their texture. Hmmm.

I tried a simple rendering with the buildings, lamps and few cars. When the object count rises to 1000 I run out of ram. And this is what it does...
It seems I have to drop a lot of stuff from the scene...

Hate that happen eh:shrug: , I have "same" problem as yours... because of memory issue, took one of the image(cloud) about 36hrs to complete, slow everythings down while rendering... well, hope you fix that problem soon and good luck to you:) .

Hey Dreamlord, what you should do, I think :shrug: , is to render the stuff you´ve done in passes, I mean you render the car, then render some buildings, then render ... and so on all with their alpha channel. And then put them all together. I Hope you can do it this way. Keep up man, It all seems pretty cool. :thumbsup:

I think Jmturbo is right, or may be you can render smaller size like I did... when I have run out memory, I have tried render each portion separately... ie 1024x1024x1024 cross screen, than I got 3072 and composite in photoshop... it is bit hard control to camera but I have done it, so may be you can try...:shrug:

maybe your swap is not enought big,
try to maximize it, in the advanced systeme parameter.
second way rendering part by part and gathering then on gimp or photoshop using alpha channel

I'm sure his idea will work. You should render things out separately anyways because doing so give you more control when you tweak things in photoshop.

Right now it seems that the scene itself causes crash too. If I add something Blender crashes. I can only have the buildings, the ground, the street lamps and half of the cars in same time but if I try to add some cars... CRASH! I haven't even tried to add the people to the scene. That might cause crash every time I open the file.
I have been thinking about getting three additional gigas ram (now I only have one), but right now I'm out of money. I'll get enough money next week's friday but that might be too late to put the scene back together and to render it.

The first scene I was working with crashes every time I try to move or add objects. Or maybe it's because of too meny / too large images as textures. The problem would be solved if I got some money to buy some memory for my pc. But I'm not having any until the next friday. I could try to solve the problem, but it would take a lot of time and I don't guarantee I would be ready when the contest ends so I decided to switch to plan B.
Guess it's better to do now and think later.

It's a guy sitting on a rocket and flying around a mountain range. I was thinking that if the man is dressed like a pilot it would not be as spectacular as if the man looks like an office guy. The rocket is ovbious red and white model of a rocket. You see those in every cartoon. The mountains are rocky and maybe they have some snow on them.

I started the modelling of the rocket from the base model and added the three tail-things to it.
The rocket consists four parts. The head, the middle part, the... nozzle and the tail. The head, midpart and nozzle are the same mesh and the three tail parts are one mesh.
I first made a cross-section of the whole mesh. I then scooped a little indentation (a right word?) between the head and midpart. The nozzle is not ment to be seen from side view.
I formated a plane to look like tale. Then I just gave it some thickness, doubled it couple of times and rotated the newborn parts.
That's how the rocket mesh was made. It's just very simple model.

The head became metallic. I only added some mirror and specularity to the basic material which is grey.
The middle part is read and white. I used a simple texture I made for another project this week.
The nozzle (still wondering this word...) and tail have the same prosedural texture. Some black clouds and blend with stencil made the trick.

To make modeling of the man's suit I modeled a man's body (without hans and head of course). The model has 1604 polygons and it's subsurfed twice.

Using the male body as... a body I modelled a simple suit on it. It's like dressing a model. The pants have 584 polys and the coat has 862. There's two buttons on the coat. Just keeping it simple.

Added shirt and tie in the suit. I only modeled the visible parts of them. The collar was tricky part. I'm not good with collars.

The shoes are made from three parts: shoelace, the top part of the shoe and the bottom.
I uset my shoe as a reference. I even scanned the bottom of it to make the shape right.
