Hi everyone! It starts again~ I've been waiting quite a while for this challenge now :applause: I'm also just started working as a juniour and gotta travel far to work too, so i'm not even sure if i got time to finish this one:sad: anyway i'm gonna give it a shot, it'll be fun. At work people use maya, max and zbrush. And since i've been thinking of learning maya i might make use this challenge to learn it. Might learn zbrush too, lol maybe that's a bit too much to learn :).

I haven't really thought about an idea yet, hopefully somehting spectacular.

I really look forward to this and i hope to see some cool artwork from everyone.

09-05-2005, 01:01 PM
Hi hhssuu, good luck mate;) I really enjoyed watching your M+S evolve and look forward to seeing what you do here...

09-05-2005, 01:26 PM

09-10-2005, 07:27 PM
Good luck in this challenge:thumbsup:

09-13-2005, 07:14 PM
Hi Chi-Han,
Thats good news about your job, sounds like you have some nice tools at the new job.
I look forward to what you come up with .

09-14-2005, 10:48 PM
hi everyone thanks for the warm welcomes, sorta busy atm :( still haven't got any good ideas yet, hopefully i'll have an cool dream and gimme some ideas soon. Anyway it's nice you see you all, i can't wait to get started. Cya.

09-14-2005, 10:52 PM
May your inspiration hit you like a giant wave mate:wavey: good luck!

09-18-2005, 10:51 PM
I've been thinking and had many ideas but none seem to be very original. Except i have one sorta really strange one, i donno if it actaully fits to be spectacular.

I had a dream once that i was waken up by someone banging on my front door, i ran out early in the morning and it was a neighbour of mine, a greek guy, a sorta big guy in a singlet. He rushed to get me out of the house, wanting to show me something. I ran out with him, and i saw thousands of birds (cocatoos i think) taking over the neighbourhood. I stared at them for a few second then realised they started flying towards us. The greek guy had a sling shot in he's hand and begain shoting at them, i had no weapon and began to run away...

This is really weird, although i sorta like the story, i might do this as an image if i think of nothing else. I would have to some how spice up the image to make it spectacluar though... please let me know what you think :)

09-19-2005, 03:36 PM
Well, thousands of birds taking over the neighbourhood sounds pretty spectacular to me!
Now, go and make some sketches of it :wip:

09-19-2005, 10:55 PM
Hi Gunilla, yer i should get started :) i sorta thought of another idea, doing a spectacular whale hunting scene. It seem quite impressive to see tiny man taking on the powers of the great ocean and a giant whale in crazy weather. But this will be such a rendering job though... sorry to keep people waiting i should be more definate soon :)

man i'm not very snappy with my ideas am i...

09-24-2005, 07:36 AM
ok i decided finally, i'm doing a spectacular whale hunt, the traditional little boat dagerous way. Simple idea but should be a fun idea to play with. I haven't even checked if anyone else is doing it, i hope not. There should be sketches soon :) yeah~

09-26-2005, 02:48 AM (

This is a quick sketch of my idea, i'm doing a whaling scene with a massive sperm whale. I think i would be cool to have the whale in rage with roped harpons stuck on the whale and lifting the boats and putting hte crew in danger. I sketch is a little dodgy atm, the details of the boat and crew etc is not decided yet, just a general feel atm. I should have better pictures later on. Feel free to comment thanks :)

09-26-2005, 04:02 AM
Looks cool. You could maybe even lower the point of view so that you show what the fishermen would have seen.

09-26-2005, 05:04 AM
Super sweet sketch! Looking forward to seeing your progress!

09-26-2005, 01:01 PM
Hey Chi-han,

I like the whale hunt idea and look forward to what you come up with, nice dynamic sketch there. Ar-lutik is doing something similar but I think you should be fine, here is his link.

09-26-2005, 01:07 PM
Very dramatic sketch! If you can catch the stormy mood it will be spectacular ... looking forward to the rest :)

09-26-2005, 02:06 PM
Whoa...your concept sketch blew me looks amazing!!

09-26-2005, 02:40 PM
Whoa that's possibly one of the best concept sketches in this challenge! Very well thought out and concieved, it should make realising this piece a lot easier. Ocean's a real nightmare for people like me... But you should have no problem!

09-26-2005, 07:15 PM
nice, looking forward the progress on this one!

09-26-2005, 08:32 PM
Great concept sketch hhssuu

Looks wonderful:thumbsup:

09-26-2005, 10:59 PM
ChrisThatGuy: yeah nice suggestion, i'm not totally sure about the composition and details yet, i will do a few more sketches and play with your idea, thanks

gardogg: thanks dude!

mmoir: lol i haven't really checked out a lot of the entries yet :) lucky mine is a dangerous whale hunt thingy and the other guy is a more plesent whale perfomance. Hopefully both entries will look spectacular :)

gardogg, Gunilla, Yongkiat, keetmun, SNoWs and Maxter: thanks guys, i'm very glad you like it. It's gonna be a big challenge tachnically and lots of modelling and rendering... should be fun. I hope i can finish it :)

anyway i'm still using max, i don't think i can do decent in maya yet, i'm just gonna try learn zBrush with this challenge... so my brain doesn't explode. Thanks for the comments guys, hope to show some more pictures soon~

09-27-2005, 12:35 AM
nice concept, very dynamic, powerful! way to go!

good luck!

09-29-2005, 06:47 AM
Hi. realy cool sketch. and good idea.its one of those good works. i am waiting to see the final image. good luck

10-02-2005, 11:12 PM (

This is another sketch... i played around with some simple geomety in max to work with the composition and doddled over that. Petrry similar to the last one... I think I've got a fair idea of the image now and will start modelling now.. yeah~ please let me know what you think, thanks.

10-03-2005, 12:07 AM
Hey Chi-han,

This second sketch is better than the first, there is more of a relationship between the boat and the whale:thumbsup: . Now , lets see some polys.:) Look forward to your modeling of this scene.

10-04-2005, 05:26 PM
I like the cyans in there.

10-04-2005, 11:05 PM
mmoir: thanks mate, can't wait to model too :)
dvelasco: yeah i like the cyan too, i actually didn't look at the first sketch and ended up with similar cyan on both lol, i guess it works. Thanks.

Yeah sorry for the slowness, busy at work lately. Plan to do some decent modelling this weekend. Please come check it out later, Cya.

10-09-2005, 10:50 PM
man... got a bad family financial problem atm... donno if i wanna do this challenge at such times... i might do it if it gets better. I really wanna do this challenge, already did quite a bit of reseach on it...

10-09-2005, 11:04 PM
I like your idea very much.

I hope you find time, cause I sure would like to see it progress.

10-12-2005, 07:04 PM
Greeeeeeeeeeat concept .motion is shown here perfectly.environment is nice.
This is my favorite.
Good luck pal,
I'll follow your thread definitlely.

10-12-2005, 10:56 PM
Jesp: thanks for the encouragement man, yeah lots of things going on atm, i will try and find time, i would really like to see this picture complete too. Even if i can't finish it, i'll give it a shot.

adel3d: wow for my concept to be your favourate, i'm very happy to hear that man, your entry last time was one of the top and of course one of my favourates too. Man i haven't had much time or peace to do much on this challenge lately. I'll try to keep working on it definately. Thanks for visiting.

10-14-2005, 11:08 AM
Dude I really wish you all the best man, 'cause I really like your concept for this one, and I too would love to see this one cross the finish line.

Don't give up, do what needs to be done first, and hopefully everything turns out all right for ya!

Cheers from Keet Mun
 :buttrock:

10-14-2005, 11:17 AM
Nice sketch and cool concept.

10-18-2005, 09:23 AM (

I finally started modelling, haven't done much though, better get a move on. Pretty simple model, basically a bread roll with eyes and fins. It's not finished yet of course, please gimme some feedback.

Man i just realised so many people are doing whales, donno why...

10-18-2005, 10:08 AM
Hi ! mate , it's seem you 're busy like me , and I just start modelling yesterday too:bounce:
hey ! we're late! hahaha , your model look good so far , nice loop, keep goin man! good luck

10-18-2005, 12:18 PM
Great start for the modeling - good to see you getting started :wip:

10-18-2005, 12:26 PM
Hey Chi-Han,

It is good to see you started the modeling , the whale looks good so far. The basic shape looks accurate to me , good job and look forward to any updates.

10-23-2005, 11:21 PM (

Hi, i've done some more on the whale this weekend. I decided to add the details in zbrush to use as desplacement maps, the texturing is on the way (looks a bit sketchy atm) and i'll add bump maps on top of hte displacement too. Cos the whale is pretty big on the picture i hope to make sure there's enough detail. Anyway, feel free to comment.

... still behind schedual.. try to catch up soon...

10-24-2005, 01:06 AM
Hi Chi-han,

I don't know my whale anatomy but this looks very good:thumbsup: . Nice job so far and keep plugging away .

10-26-2005, 07:01 AM
hey man,
thanks for checkin out my entry!

Nice concept and idea.
Have fun & Find luck!:D

10-26-2005, 05:41 PM
Hey Chih-Han very nice model... i'm looking forward to see your wip:thumbsup:

10-26-2005, 05:46 PM
Marvelous work hhssuu, I'm anxious to see your whale in the water.

10-26-2005, 11:04 PM
Sorry i forgot to reply to after my previous post too :) i reply them now.

monsitj and Gunilla and mmoir:thanks, yer slow start, hopefully things go smooth and i get it done. Thanks for visiting :)

mmoir: yer the sperm whale anatomy is kinda weird but i like the details in it and it's the bigges whale with teeth so i chose this whale.

tuck: thanks for visiting mine :D look forward to checking yours out soon.

Maxter and claudio_jordao: thanks man, i'll do my best to update soon.

10-31-2005, 10:54 PM (

Sorry i haven't posted for a little while, I sorta gave the whale a rest and started on the boat. Fairly simple model with a many little parts stuck on it. Still to add the harpoons, the sail and many little buckets and tools. The boat looks a bit clean atm, will be adding rough wood grains etc with bump maps in zbrush.

C&C are most welcome :)

11-01-2005, 04:00 AM
wow , nice boat man! good modeling job so far!

11-03-2005, 11:05 PM (

Here's a simple model I did up to zbrush, i'm basically going to do up a Universal whaler in zb, then i will pose the sdiv1 mesh in max to change the model form in zb then make changes on each model for my whalers. Just the basic mesh to show atm, i aslo UV maped this dud so i can texture in zb. Feel free to comment :)

11-04-2005, 07:11 AM
I love your modeling skills... you make it look so easy!
The boat have very nice lines and the lowpoly human is looking good too - can't wait to see what you do with Zbrush.

11-06-2005, 10:56 PM (

monsitj: Thanks man, still got a long way to go :)

gunilla: Thanks man, my modelling skills are "ok" still like to improve, as we all do :) thanks for visiting

Hello, here's the complete model of the boat (i think), i've just started to texture it. It should have enough detail to hold up in the image (the boat will not take up too much space). Feel free to comment thanks for visiting.

11-06-2005, 11:59 PM
hi man, your work its very interesting, the models look great, i hope you´ll get the time to finish, good luck.

11-07-2005, 07:56 AM (

Here's a little bit of modeling on the universal whaler, not much really, C&C are welcome.

11-13-2005, 11:00 PM (

Hi no time no update :), i did a rush job texturing the boat over the weekend, it's a bit rough at some areas but should hold up for the size on the image, it's got no shading on it yet just a plain defuse. Comments are most welcome.

11-16-2005, 08:45 AM (

This is a bit model zb on the whaler, still far from correct, and the hands and foot and face are still "blurry", comments are most welcome :)

11-16-2005, 09:28 AM
nice anatomy! for me it's not far from correct!:cool: good job Hsu!

11-17-2005, 08:00 AM
monsitj: thanks man, my thread is so quite good to see you still replying :) i'll keep working to have new updates soon.

11-17-2005, 04:54 PM
Nice modeling work chih-han, good progress on it:thumbsup:

11-17-2005, 06:20 PM
Very good updates! I'm especially fond of your boat texturing... really nice. And now, go, go, go - there is not much time left :wip:

11-17-2005, 10:33 PM
Maxter: thanks man :)
Gunilla: hehe thanks, i did quite a rush job good to hear you like it :) yer time is running short, i'm not sure if i can finish as well i would like to but i try finish it :) your entry is always good managible size i should learn from you and not stress myself out trying to do too much :D

11-18-2005, 11:45 AM
Gunilla: hehe thanks, i did quite a rush job good to hear you like it :) yer time is running short, i'm not sure if i can finish as well i would like to but i try finish it :) your entry is always good managible size i should learn from you and not stress myself out trying to do too much :D

Do your best to finish - and next time, try a smaller scene. I never know in advance how much free ime I will have for this, that's why I do manageble scenes... this time I almost wish I had done something bigger since I've ended up having more time than usual.
So, just keep working and you'll get there!

11-18-2005, 01:44 PM

The boat model is looking extremely well done and the textures are great too.  Now , the character model is fabulous too, very detailed and very accurate as far as I can tell. Good luck with this.

12-02-2005, 02:51 AM (

Thanks for the previous replies guys. I haven't posted for a while, being doing only little by little after work. I'm sorta just trying to get it done in time and not being pick now. For the character models i quickly zbrushed some clothing and painted them quickly since they will only be small and placed them in the scene. Fot the splashes i made around 10 variations in zb and placed them around the boat and whale. I will later render them seperatly so i can add more in photoshop in post. I think i'm gonna need a lot of post to get this looking ok :) Comments are most welcome.

12-02-2005, 08:48 AM
Wow. I didn't see this thread before. It's a success. Like the composition really. My only advice : hurry up there(s no time more. I want to see it finished.

12-02-2005, 02:00 PM (

This is a little colour check with the texture of the whale, most things have textures now although not all that good but should look ok in the composite. Anyway i corrected a bit more of the lighting. I will spend saterday on rendering and sunday composite and monday fixups then submit... nearly there... comments are most welcome :)

12-02-2005, 02:08 PM
authentic: thanks man, i'm very happy you like it :) thanks for the advice, your too right time is running out i gotta get my act together for the final dash, congrate on your finish, cya at the finishline

12-02-2005, 02:11 PM
Hey Chi-han,

The composition looks great, the whale is really imposing in this image:thumbsup:  , I am looking forward to the final image. Good luck to the finish line.

12-02-2005, 02:19 PM
Looking real nice there hhssuu. Is this the actual composition or a framed detail shot? If it is the actual composition I suggest you add a lot more negative space above the whale; as is it is screaming for a more vertical negative space. I f I remember from your concept it had more space right? anyway it is coming along quite well.

12-02-2005, 02:23 PM
Hi there! I'm glad to see you're back on this. The whale looks really impressive - so does the fishing team. Good luck for completion - looking forward to see it fully renderd  :wip:

12-02-2005, 02:33 PM
Impressive scene... spectacular...
Beatiful texture and lights... waitng to see more up-dates, until now nothig to crit.
A very powerfull image :applause:

12-02-2005, 05:40 PM
very good job so far Hsu! I like the color , lighting , I think it will be wonderful when you add the sea surface! your schedule seem to be tight ! maybe you should beware the last day traffic while upload file ! good luck man!

12-02-2005, 09:26 PM
Heya mate... make a mighty dash, this is killer:buttrock:

May the force be with you

12-03-2005, 02:02 AM
mmoir & Gunilla: thanks man, i do my best to finish  best of luck with your entry too
SNoWs: thanks for your comments, um this is actually the final composition :( i had a look at other composition and this one's sorta the one i liked better. I'm very thankfull for your advice but unfortuantely i don't think i have anytime to reagrange compositions anymore. I hope you will like the final image though :)
jddog & monsitj & DaddyMack: thank you guys, yer the schedual is very tight, i do my final charge now... RAHHH~~~

I'll be doing my rendering today, i'll split up my image into multiple rendering and render out seperate elements, i will also renderout a image with material ids for easier compositing. For the splashes i will render some within the scene as well as seperate splashs so i can add more in photoshop without too much stress on my computer. My lighting is kept simple with one key light (sun) and a slight blue back light (acts like fill light, though i'll add a bit of blue to suggest reflections from the water surface), then i render an ambient occlusion pass with mental ray then composite.

Ok i hurry on to my renders now! thanks for the replies:)

12-03-2005, 05:35 PM
Nice progress and concept! This looking good so far. Goodluck! hope u will finish!

12-03-2005, 07:45 PM
Woooow Chih-Han Hsu, this looks so great... I love your whale, and the dynamics of your image it's just incredible, come on friend... finish this quicky!

12-04-2005, 10:58 PM (

ok rendering is finished now, i basically rendered all the objects ina a seperate layer and have the element passes seperate as well, i also rendered a material id (for isolating selections) and an ambient occlusion pass to get a bit og GI feel.

A more complete composite and post effects is on the way...

Dogreas3d and claudio jordao: thanks guys, nearly finished now, i hope you'll like the final image too :) and best of luck to you guys also

12-04-2005, 11:11 PM (

Here's how i rendered my water surface, i basically rendered a procedual water- looking shader on my surface and then rendered a seperate pass with a texture i put together with wave bubbles and sea water tones. Then i put the texture layer over the procedual layer with linear dodge and colour lodge in various levels and played with saturations until i was happy.

I rendered bits and pieces of water splashes and placed them with the same lighting of the scene. I will used them to add more water splashes in the scene so i wouldn't need to have a huge max file that would not render.

comments are most welcome.

ok i gotta goto work now, i hope to finish the final tonight and submit :)

12-05-2005, 12:52 AM
oh great! very nice idea and execution. The water spalsh around the whale doesn't look very realistic though, at this scale it should be smaller water drops and more foamy! grab some ref, easy to find on google .. (type whale jump or something..)

12-05-2005, 02:44 AM

This scene is coming together nicely, the water is looking excellent:thumbsup: . Good luck to the finish line.

12-05-2005, 07:08 AM
Yeah - good luck for the final steps, you're almost there now

12-05-2005, 08:02 AM
Yoinks this is looking stunning mate.... Good luck beating the clock!

12-05-2005, 08:18 AM (

M@: thanks for the suggestion man, i added some more splashes, hope you like it :)

mmoir, gunilla and DaddyMack: Thanks for checking out my thread guys, i'll get busy and finish off now, hope you'll like the final image

Ok i've added most of the splashes in now, there's a mix between cg splashes and some splash photos i took at a fountain. i made some colour corrections around the place.

Next i will paint in some streams that flow off the whale from the head and teeth then i should be pretty close.

i better get busy, feel free to comments :)

12-05-2005, 08:48 AM
That looks cool ,almost finnished and good luck.

12-05-2005, 09:05 AM
Incredible, unbelievable.. I have no words; Realistic and illustrative in the same time. Emotion....Colors....Light and shadows.

I just can cry fotr this picture. Hope you'll win.

12-05-2005, 09:10 AM
Very cool man, its really come together. The only thing that doesn't hold up to my eyes is the rowing guys. The two standing guys look great, but to me the rowers look much less stylish and believable. Short of re-modeling, texturing and posing in the one remaining day, I'd suggest maybe darkening or desaturating those figures so that they don't draw the viewers focus. Or, nothing wrong with trying super cheap techniques like overlaying a texture or another image to get a bit more interest in the offending area, or even a 2d warp with photoshop liquify could work nicely. Nice work anyway!

12-05-2005, 09:23 AM
WOw! very nice ! and good technic ! glad you share here! and can you explain more about water texture? is it image or something? but not now , just finish it , I can wait , heheh
your image looking great ! but some point if you have time is big whale is look dry , maybe you can add a layer of thin surface to represent the water drop that on the big whale surface !:thumbsup::thumbsup:

12-05-2005, 09:25 AM
SONIC-X: thanks man!
authentic: hehe it's prob not as cool as you decribed it :) thanks a lot i'm glad you like it.
gjpetch: yer too true, i've been staring at the sailors for the last couple of days, i'm sorta trying to fix it in photoshop atm cos rendering is prob to time consuming atm, i wish i could rerender though :(. Anyway give what you said a go, thanks for the suggestions.

12-05-2005, 10:38 AM (

monsitj: thanks, wow, glad you like my techniques :) the water is a mix between cg rendered water and photo, compisited in photoshop, nothing tricky really, i'll explain after i finish if you like :).

I took your advice and added more water fro the whales body, and did more clean up.

Should be near finish now...

comments are most welcome :)

Title: Leviathan

My image depicts a spectacular whale hunting scene. Following the lines of “excites and scares at the same time” I thought a traditional whale hunt would be the perfect topic. It seemed impressive to me that man would risk their lives taking on massive powers of giant whales in extreme weather conditions. With my image I tried to capture a moment of great danger and the bravery of the traditional whalers.

12-05-2005, 11:55 AM
a really spectacular scene... :bounce:

12-05-2005, 12:09 PM

Great work! well done in every aspect :)

12-05-2005, 05:09 PM
Awesome final image

I liked alot your explanation about water techniques, this is a wise approach to not render millions of polys

Good luck for the final voting :bounce:

12-05-2005, 05:18 PM
i liked the colors and the composition.nice work:thumbsup: best of luck:thumbsup:

12-05-2005, 07:07 PM

Awsome work, very nice color and compositing, i really like effect of the water, however i dont like to much shader of the people. (plastic) , maybe they should be splash by the water ;-)

anyway great work !! :)

There was some interest in the methods involved in my water splashes, so I decided to write a little explanation for those interested. It's nothing fancy but i hope some will find it helpful :)

The splashes in the image consisted of 3d renders, photos I took of real water and painted details.

For the 3d splashes I created in zbrush, I made a around 20ish variations and composited them into the scene; the lighting were kept in the same so the composite will look natural. The following explains the steps in zb that I used to make the blobby splash look:

1) I create a plane with enough divisions to mask out fine details like water drops.
2) I then masked out the water drops, either by applying an image rough water then using the image intensity as a mask or just painting the mask directly.
3) I then hid the unmasked polys
4) Following, I deleted the lower res sdivs, and then deleted the hidden polys
5) I now store a morph target of this, inflate the geometry then use the "create difference mesh" function to make a sorta extruded look of our splash geometry.
6) At this stage you can pull the water drops around with the move tool to give it a more natural look, rather then it all sitting flat on a plane. I also like to give it a smooth or inflate to my likes.
7) As you can see it still looks sorta stiff and un-blobby. To make it blobby, I create a unified mesh from the current geometry. This usually gives a more averaged out and smooth look.
8) And finally I like to give it a bit more unevenness by drawing some over the geometry randomly to give the water a bit more fluid appearance.

I created many versions of this, shaded and rendered in max for the composite.
Some splashes like the water surface surrounding the whale and some splashes around the boat were rendered with the scene to at least have some water interact more believable. I also rendered some water with transparent and refracted shades as well as a white foamy version so I can decide the balance of foaminess later in Photoshop.

For the 2d side of the water I took some photos of splashes form a local water fountain. These pictures were taken from a high shutter speed so I get minimal blurriness. The following shows the steps I did to add splashes form the photos to my composite:

1) Grab a copy of one of the channels, and then adjust the levels until you have the desired fineness of your splash.
2) Load the selection from the channel then fill it with white over your composite.

This method only worked for my case cos the splashes are generally white, otherwise it could look a bit flat.

For the painted details I simply painted streaks of waters on the whale by eye.
Although I would have like to create the image fully with 3d elements but as time was running short I decided to go for a more hybrid approach, and I think I’m quite happy with the result.

I hope my explanations are helpful and please feel free to ask questions if I didn't describe my steps clearly.
