Latest Update: Final Image: r i s e (

My first challenge, good excuse and kick up rear to get going on a high detail image, a sketch that i've been meaning to expand upon for a long time. I'll expand upon the concept and idea behind it more as i go on, but the general feel is one of 'it's never too late to realise a different path', that moment of realisation about your life and actions, plus i wanted to do a full battlescene without reference :). This is just a really rough sketch, going to even it out, add more of a vast feeling and generally push myself

Sweeeet start m8!

Wishing you the best of luck!

09 September 2005, 11:58 AM
Interesting sketch... i like the light across the central character. And a battle scene could be incredibly spectacular. ARe you still planning on 'no reference?

Good luck!

09 September 2005, 12:04 PM
wow I like the idea. The lighting looks great so far. Good luck with the challenge, nice to see so many people entering so quickly :)

wow!!great sketch! wellcome to the challenge!!good luck!:D

09 September 2005, 01:03 PM
cheers mdears :applause: , mr duddle, tips hat, yep, i can pull off a reasonably ok face and stiff pose but getting life into my figures is something i need to work on, figured, do hundreds of em, in at the deep end, plus i reckon it'll look better if i don't start using odd face refs, keep it uniform and make it look like it was illustrated rather than super realistic, i will be consulting mirror for hands, i suck at hands :)

09 September 2005, 04:59 PM
wow! spyroteknik, I know it's very early days yet for everybody's sketches and far too early to judge but yours definitely stood out as having the most depth of feeling to it imo. Looking forward to seeing how it develops.

09 September 2005, 05:27 PM
amazing sketch. have fun and best luck! :)

09 September 2005, 06:27 PM
Really nice first run!!! Amazing sketch... keep the good work!

09 September 2005, 09:59 PM
Looking smashing Martin. I think you were just about the first to get a piccy up! Might I suggest pulling the composition up a little, so we see even more sky...?

09 September 2005, 10:21 PM
i like the illumination around the central character very much :) i would suggest looking at some references, it really helps getting the details right and also show more of the background if possible.

09 September 2005, 10:23 PM
thanks again for welcome (feels weird cos i haven't posted here much due to my spectacularly lazy mindset), a little word about the idea, what springs to my mind when iconic, spectacular images are mentioned are the big battlescenes, the old masters, and the religious full scenes, figured i'd do a take on it, not even hoping to come close but i wanted to give it a shot, and with me not being particularly religious, battlescene it was, but i want to add a subtle dimension to it, not just blood & guts, put some meaning into it that draws the attention away from what's spectacular, and into a more human emotional state, with the spectacular going on around what's initially the more personal concept, such is life, enough pansy talk though, Aly, good call, am messing with it currently, i reckon if i do that, and start slowly dropping the focus down, widening out the scene it'll look better as it goes, hopefully :), lotsa widdling to do

09 September 2005, 10:51 PM
I like the start so far, looking foward to updates.

Wow! Great start so far, I can't wait to see where it goes!

09 September 2005, 09:41 AM (

2nd draft, this is the same image, before i upped the contrast and added the nasty dodge, just starting to move things around a little, narrowed the canvas, gave it a little more sky, you can't tell that much yet, but i want to see a sea of heads so the midground fella's will be dropped down, perspective altered, but i want to get that middle strip balanced before i start ironing that out, working in lower contrast, want to add that as i go rather than play with curvetool at the end, only worrying about figure placement right now, i'll work on lighting later, shoyuld have another one of these up tonight sometime (got a few hours free thisafternoon)

09 September 2005, 09:44 AM
Nice Sketch man. I realy love it. good luck:thumbsup:

09 September 2005, 10:47 AM
Very interesting idea. I'll be checking this thread. Keep it up

09 September 2005, 11:02 AM
Spectacular start! :D
Nice to see you participating Martin. Good luck.

09 September 2005, 03:12 PM (

rendering process 1,
started to mess with head positions, blew it up from 72dpi upto 5000px high, so i can get into the canvas fully, pretty happy with what i have so far, i know it doesn't look much yet, but i can see what i want to do, should be enough room to detail the hell out of it, repositioned the central character so he is the main focus, only really working on the middle strip of detail upto now, oh, will re-ad the lightstrip and source at later stages, just messing with the single grey day light, be a few days until i can get to it again

side note, compositionally, it looks a bit cramped, but i want the 2 thirds rule with 1 thrid for the sky, hopefully i'll get the depth in there to make it work later on

thx again everyone

09 September 2005, 03:28 PM
that's some spectacular stuff , nice sketch!

09 September 2005, 04:05 PM
Nice sketch Martin. I love battle scenes. Hope you'll continue with the idea and develop something spectacular with a battle scene! Keep it up!

09 September 2005, 04:11 PM
Nice start so far! Looking forward to seeing your progress. Good luck!

09 September 2005, 05:21 PM
I like filling of this picture and action of peple in it. because it look like event something happend. it COOL sketch!!

09 September 2005, 11:43 AM (

quick update, just messing with the centre strip a bit, happier with the placements, will start work on depth and background soon

09 September 2005, 03:54 PM
subscribing - good luck Martin :)

09 September 2005, 12:36 PM
Haunting. No crits so far! :bounce:

09 September 2005, 02:19 PM
Are you the same spyroteknik I voted for on GFX? Better get in the top 5 then or I'll demand a refund! :D

You've made a good start. The atmosphere's looking suitably grimy and you've got some depth going on, but one thing that does stand out is that you really need to loosen up on your characters. At the moment they look too stiff and posed. You need to get an element of chaos and desperation in there whilst retaining a clear focus, not an easy task.

Good luck, I'll watch with interest

09 September 2005, 03:44 PM
I don't like the guy who is leaning over and grabbing someones face, I know it's still early stages, but he looks very out of place, rigid, motionless and inanimate. Worth correcting sooner rather than later as I feel that it throws the whole image off.
But great progress Martin - keep up the good work.

09 September 2005, 05:14 PM (

heya baron, yep that's the fella :), yeah i know, that's what's really lacking in my stuff, figure fluidity, am going to have to change quite a bit as i go, xeophex, yep, that guy needs some work, the stiff hair doesn't help much, a bit more motion on the back of his jacket and different hair might work out, going to have to play around, i'm leaving the main characters behind for a while, whilst concentrating on the background jumble, going to take quite a bit of time getting all those guys in place, but i will make revisions to the main focus when i'm done with bg, took out all the imperfluous stuff to work on structure, will re-add smoke, light later, thanks loads for looking in

09 September 2005, 05:28 PM
Hi there!
This is looking promising! You should ad some a variety of units.. like horses or something. looks weird with the battlefield only being flat with heads. Really cool otherwise, whats with the guy in the middle?

09 September 2005, 05:57 PM
cheers, yep, might be a good idea, it does look pretty flat at this stage, i've taken away a lot of the elements to work on the base figures, will re-add the sticks flying about and smoketrails and the odd horse might fit in well, he's the main focus, he will be bathed in a horizontal lightsource, contemplating his decisions, that moment of epiphany is what's being highlighted :)

09 September 2005, 08:24 PM (

poor excuse for an update, still noodling all those background figures in, going to take a while, before moving back to the main fella's, re-adding sticks & debris & smoke etc

10 October 2005, 05:15 PM

10 October 2005, 12:09 AM
ooooo this is looking very good spyro!! always love how you do crowds! i think the hair looks a little static as you said in your earlier post, but it's really cool to see how you build up your images!! keep spyro goodness coming!! :bounce: can't wait to see this finished!

10 October 2005, 02:09 AM
I like the concept of your work. I'll keep an eye on it. I'm sure that it will look great at the end.

Good luck!

10 October 2005, 10:21 PM (

Still playing with the background, haven't had much time to work on this, need to get a good block of time in, want to start on the midground faces, once the boring figures are rendered, i can have some fun with the lighting and debris effects, thanks everyone

10 October 2005, 09:13 PM (

Baby steps again, widdling out areas bit by bit, want to get the midground balanced before going back into the background and tighten up, then, i have the foreground to sort out, starting to move closer to my initial sketch

10 October 2005, 11:48 PM
was thinking about your composition and was about to say something like the add of vertical elements when i seen the smoke :) ...
well the image made much progress, a small idea i had was to place the scene in a valey, so the enlighted midground lightrays have could be some athmospheric shadows n stuff, something like a canion, so it adds a few more vertical lines that cross the horizonline and break up the all horiontal scheme a bit.
Keep up the great work mate, cheers

11 November 2005, 10:24 PM (

Not a noteable update as far as the figures go, but i've messed with the atmospherics and generally broke up the horizontal feel, it looks closer to final although i've got a good bit rendering to do yet

edit - thanks 1st angel, yeah, it needed breaking up, i tried to make the horizon a little more valley-like, and strengthened up the smoke and lightbeam, and i'm toying with the idea of the typo, but i'm not sure, i might up the contrast a touch when i'm closer to final, with a stronger bloom in centre it might help compositionally, thx again, glad of the help at this stage :)

edit again, got a weird lumpy thing sticking out of my hand, i'm no stranger to drawing hand problems so i will get this done in time (ahh, see, you thought it was an excuse for not coming up with the goods, but i will, even if i have to go lefty), i'm sketching like normal, but can't do it for more than an hour or so right now, so i'm hoping to go speedygonzalez on this in a couple of weeks

11 November 2005, 12:13 AM (

Determined to get this finished in time, still got 10 days if i can fit it between jobs, want to pack in a good bit more detail before i call it finished, tighten it up, but the feel of it is there

11 November 2005, 02:13 AM
Ooo... weird lumpy thing in hand! I had one of those. Now I have a scar where the surgeon took it out. ;)

I love the atmosphere in your image. I also like what you've done with the text. The image as a whole needs a touch more colour though mainly in the foreground.

Not much time left... ;)

11 November 2005, 12:07 AM (

Almost finished, just a bit more tightening to do before i call it done, hopefully, still got a few days left

edit: thx lync, yeah, i'm guessing it's not bone, so off to the docs it is :)

12 December 2005, 02:08 PM
Great work! I like it, great idea and atrmosphere. Good luck man :applause:

12 December 2005, 09:45 PM (

just about finished, well, it probably is finished, but i need to write something up before i upload the final,

been fun, and i've gotten all i could want out of this experience, been a good test/lesson

12 December 2005, 04:34 PM (

'Spectacular', this word conjures up so many meanings, all of which are personal perceptions, this is mine, how in one instant, you can make a spectacular decision that affects your whole life, like some outside force, you recieve an epiphany, where a split second can seem an eternity, this is my representation of how that feels,

About the image, people take what they want out of an image, subjectivity is something I'd like to remain as much as I can, but the premise is, the central figure, chaos surrounding him, in a state of contemplation, and the message contained is how you can always, no matter what the circumstances, change your purpose or direction in life, it is this human trait that I find more spectacular than anything else.
