09 September 2005, 01:10 PM (

Hi all :)
Ok, this isn't a great sketch but it will do for now.
My idea: My idea is, The Discovery of Pandoras Box. In this sketch we are looking down into a whole that has been carved out of a cave. I don't know if u can tell but there is a man down there who has discovered Pandors box and has now unleashed what is within.
I'm going to have additional characters in the cave with him and I will paint the effect of the smoke? disease? on the humans when they breath it in. I may also add screaming faces into the smoke stuff to make it more dramatic, and have the humans decaying and stuff.

So what you think??

09 September 2005, 01:21 PM
you've got large enough value range for starters, good. It doesn't read yet, but what does it matter? It reads in your head, that's all you need at this stage.

Composition though, I'd move the large light thing a bit towards left top corner and beef up the light line, the whole thing's a bit too centered at the moment. Anyway, that was just a random suggestion, I guess you're gonna do billions of composition tries and you probably find the right compo yourself.

09 September 2005, 01:25 PM
Ranath: Thanks!! Yep it is very centered, thanks for pointing that out. I'll do loads more composition ideas. This is so exciting!! Thanks for the advice means a lot :D

09 September 2005, 01:32 PM
be very nice watching this unfold, sweet idea

09 September 2005, 01:34 PM
Like the idea a lot! looking forward to seeing the progress on this one!

Best of luck.

09 September 2005, 01:58 PM
Nice idea, could work well having all the demons streaming up towards the viewer. Don't forget "hope" though :)

09 September 2005, 02:10 PM
Nice idea, came over to give my support...looking forward to more updates :)

09 September 2005, 02:17 PM
Thanks for the reply! I think you have a really spectacular idea!
I would like to see the same image in a different perspectiv, how about setting the camera at the bottom of the pit looking up at the boy opening the box and the ppl looking down(the complete opposit of this) so that the expression of their faces will show. I think that would be preety neat :)! Ill check it out later and see if i get my wish through :p..

09 September 2005, 02:34 PM
Very dynamic and energetic strokes. I like your method to work in monochromatic values first before adding colour. It is also one of my working methods, depending on the requirements of the piece.

If it works in monochromatic values, it will be stunning in colour. All the best.

09 September 2005, 03:01 PM
huh? i replied to this, wheres my post???

anyway i said great idea, and sum screaming faces wud be a nice touch!

09 September 2005, 05:05 PM
Hey great idea! Pandoras box really does open possibilities *chuckles* :applause:

Wishing you good luck! Thanx for the visit!

09 September 2005, 05:22 PM
spyroteknik: Thankyou!! I'm glad everyone's liking the idea :)
Overchord: Thankyou :)
Baron Impossible: ahh yes now that is something to think about, hmmm
FrozZT: That's a good idea I'll give it a try :)
vincent1: thanks, I thought to begin with it would be easier, so I don't go into too much detail about the colour just yet.
NOOB!: heehee thanks
Falcor_: thankyou! :D

09 September 2005, 05:24 PM (

Thanks everyone for the support!

Ok, here's another quick sketch what do you think? just working out the composition at the moment :)

09 September 2005, 05:26 PM
great!,maybe do it at an angle though, like rotate it so its diagonal,i think that wud be more dynamic.

09 September 2005, 05:29 PM
Thanks NOOB! :) I have a habbit of keeping things central. I will work on that. Thanks again

09 September 2005, 05:38 PM
YES! I got my way! :)
Thats what im talking about! I think that composition has a lot of potentiall!
Good work!

Now go help me with my perspective problems! :p

09 September 2005, 06:02 PM
FrozZT: heehee thanks! :D

John Keates
09 September 2005, 08:27 PM
There is a lot of scope for the spectacular here and it is certainly a once in a lifetime event!

Looking forward to seeing more.

09 September 2005, 08:33 PM
John Keates: Thanks :D

I'm back at college tomorro  heehee I want to work on this!! I'm going to try something different, I'm sticking with the Pandora's box idea, just changing the concept of it slightly. Hmm I'm not going to be able to concentrate tomorro.

Thanks everyone for the support!! :D

09 September 2005, 08:55 PM
Pandora's box should be perfect as a starting point for something spectacular - this is bound to get interesting.

09 September 2005, 09:49 PM
Interesting Concept.:scream:

09 September 2005, 12:26 AM
hi enialadam!

good luck + lots of fun! :bounce:

see you around!

09 September 2005, 02:30 AM
thats an interesting one enialadam, the composition looks fine ,like noob mentioned, the current low angle looks good to me,but try play around with the angle alil bit, twist the camera or something and u'll get something different:)keep it up,i'll be back again

09 September 2005, 02:07 PM
with that idea you could have some wicked twists in perspective as well.. look for Escher's drawings and you get the point

09 September 2005, 04:27 PM
Hey, love the idea of pandoras box, so many cools things you could with it, definetly looking forward to see how this turns out.

Good Luck and have fun!

09 September 2005, 08:04 PM
Indeed a good idea. I'm not sure what your take is on this, but to get it to work 'vividly' on the viewer it might be wise to chose an angle of view that would be possible to chieve with the human eye. This will leave the wondering about what's happening away and draw into the image, exceptions such as being extremely tall or birdseye views set aside, I think an extremely low perspective will confuse if you don't paint a ledge of some sort. Ahem... some more ramblings have been duely prevented. :D Since it's step 2 and all...

09 September 2005, 08:13 PM
JamesMK:Thankyou, I just hope I can pull it off :)
pushav: cheers
dunkelgold: thanks good luck to you too :)
sh@ke: Thanks, I'm trying out different angles right now, jsut come to a slight block
Ranath: Thankyou, I'm really new to perspective, but I have a couple of books that I'm studying I hope I will be able to do something different for a change.
Jay007: Thanks for the support
jmBoekestein: Thanks for the help! :) I don't think I will stick with this angle...well that's if I can think of something better.

Alas I am back at college now so have less time to work on this. But I shall not give up! Thanks everyone for being so supportive and patient means a lot to me :)

09 September 2005, 09:50 PM
I love your idea! Spectacular!!! good luck~:)

09 September 2005, 12:08 PM
Wow !! This is a fantastic idea !! "Don't open the black box !! Harrrgh too late !"

It make me thought about an illustration of Craig Mullins. Let's have a look ...

09 September 2005, 12:09 PM
Wow ! This is a fantastic idea. "Don't open the black box !! Harrrgh too late !"

09 September 2005, 12:14 PM
good luck enialadam :)

this concept is really promising, i am looking forward for more sketches :)

best of luck

09 September 2005, 02:02 PM
Pierrick: Thanks :) allthough now I feel screwed because I know I won't be able to achieve something as fantastic as that! :D

Llynna: Thanks trying to sort out the ideas in my head at the's getting a bit hecktick up in here.

09 September 2005, 02:06 PM
shuddup madalaine, that mullins pic is a piece o poo, looks like a
bad photo edit, were it or not , heh, u can do better easy

09 September 2005, 02:18 PM
Very good luck, enialadam! :) YouŽve to deepen on your proyect to show us an unusual PandoraŽs box. For example, when you open the box, legions of peanuts come out, haha:bounce: (ok, IŽll take my pill).

Goood luckk!!

09 September 2005, 05:09 PM
Madalaine! I think an arial view would be more impressive, with the heads of the others turned up looking at whatever the horror or beauty is that has been released, with it quite close to the viewer. With quite a tight composition. .... I dunno... wibble....

09 September 2005, 01:02 AM
I agree with Aly. Would be interesting to see how you portray each thing that comes out of the box (which was actually a jar/vase in the myth) along with hope inside the box. Great idea, and good luck deciding on the composition.

09 September 2005, 02:24 PM (

hmmmm another concept, crappy I know but I just planning ideas as we all are :)

Ok, so I thought I'd try something different. I have an idea in my head but can't put it to paper, it's driving me crazy.

In this concept i was thinking, archeological site, the people find pandora's box, open it and release evil creatures that sting living things, wreaking death, pain and disease on the world. These moth things are the creatures. So at the moment just playing around with dynamics and such. Let me know what you think :) Thanks

09 September 2005, 02:36 PM
i want chaos,i want these fools getting stung in the ass.

nice concept!

09 September 2005, 04:17 PM
i want chaos,i want these fools getting stung in the ass.

nice concept!

haha, I think I need to work on another angle. My problem is, I want a focus on the characters who find the box and I want a view of how it affects the world. This idea is proving to be difficult.
I also need to decide, who is going to find the box, archeologists? When, so will it be futuristic. and where will the box be found?

gah I may have to think of another idea instead if I don't work this out soon. I jsut feel I'm sitting on something good with this idea, and If I portray it well enough, it could turn out spectacular! lol

09 September 2005, 04:28 PM
nice new sketch!
can't wait to see more...:bounce:

09 September 2005, 04:32 PM
hehe cool idea ... maybe if you combine the moths with your other character intentions and of course some fools stung in the ass for noob, you might just have the perfect mix :D

09 September 2005, 04:34 PM
I think maybe the best way to go about it would be to keep the camera angle and scope of the first concept, but then add the creatures from the second to it. A good source of inspiration could be the final scenes of the classic 'Raiders of the lost ark' when they open the actual ark....

09 September 2005, 04:44 PM

Really like this new sketch, clicked on the comp without knowing it was yours! :)

Cheers, :)

09 September 2005, 01:50 PM
Love your pandora's box concept, enialadam! Your latest update has great impact due to the composition & perspective. Can't wait to see you develop this further!

09 September 2005, 04:34 PM
try to sketch with realistic colors. I know this won't be any casual world, but it's good for practice. If you keep everything nice and layered, you can always color correct your paintings to give them purple look or whatever you want. That way you get a good grasp of realism (I think).

Anyway, composition's nice, nice tilt to this one, adds movement to it. Keep it up.

And hey! don't post Craig Mullins stuff to anyone's threads, no matter how good you are, you always look lame compared to Mullins! :D

09 September 2005, 07:23 PM
Dont give up on this concept now! You will figure it out and it will be spectacular!
Dont you think you could focus on the persons that opens it and still show how it affects the world in some way? Maybe you should create a whole new environment for where they find the box, not just a pit... I want to see more!

09 September 2005, 10:33 PM
Hi Madalaine,

I love the camera angl you used on your latest sketch. You definitely have a grasp of good balance in your layout. Looking forward to seeing what else you come up with. Keep up the good work and thank you for your comments on my sketch as well. Cheers! - J

09 September 2005, 05:21 AM
hie enialadam~this is looking good~the angle especially,u could still play alil more with the colors and the mood andi think it lacks abit of depth for the background and the rocks or the hill seems to be parallel with the horizon.otherwise,u have almost everything in place~keep this going mate~

09 September 2005, 07:39 AM
Ducklator: Thanks :D
Vahn: Thanks for the advice I think I will do that :)
JamesMK: cool thanks for that, I'm working on another concept at the moment, I think I'm quite happy with how it's turning out, I'll post it soon.
Rebeccak: heehee thanks, this is definatly something new from me, I'm trying out different styles right now :)
artjunkie: Thakyou :) I quite like this angle too, at the moment I'm trying to interpret it in a different way :)
Ranath: Thanks mate, I will give that a try.
FrozZT: heehee, in my new concept I have set the scene futuristicly so there will be alot more happening in it. I've never done a futuristic painting before, I hope I can pull it off. Thanks :)
Mecha Hate Chimp: Thankyou! :)
sh@ke: Thanks mate. Hopefully my next update will be a design closer to being the final compositiong. Seems to be taking me ages now I'm back at college.

Thanks everyone, your support means a lot! :)

09 September 2005, 09:29 AM
Looks great! I like the idea, but the composition doesn't quite help you on the "spectacular" theme. I'ts more like it's a steady flow and well balanced composition now.

I would imagine placing the camera next to the box (lowering the horizon is my solution to everything, hehe). And then have the people that opened it, look up at the creatures they unleashed - whom spring out up into the air in every direction. I'ts kinda hard to explain.. but I hope you get what I mean.

Keep it up!

09 September 2005, 12:40 PM
very nice idea madalaine keep working and everything will be fine .. good luck

09 September 2005, 01:03 PM
i really love the colours you are using :). in my opinion it is not that spectacular for now, but i think you can easily achieve that. just rotate the canvas a bit to get a more interesting perspective. maybe the first insect thingie shouldnt fly so straightforward but a little bit sideways. i hope you get what i mean^^

i will keep watching and hope for more lovely colours to come :)

09 September 2005, 03:03 PM
I agree with Llynna. Maby those insects will chase something, or will be chased. Good luck.

09 September 2005, 09:46 PM (

Hiya, *sigh* I haven't had much time to work on this.

This is a quick Idea, unfinished though but I posted it because you can kinda see what's going on. Here's the explanation:

I'm thinking of going for a futuristic idea. I want to create a character who is a relic hunter, I allready have thoughts on her costume. I want the image to have some symbolism linking to ancient greece.
What you can see here is the relic hunters study. I want it to feel open so I'm going to have huge glass windows so that you can see the 'futuristic' city scape.

This is all new to me. I have never drawn anything futuristic before, I have never really played with perspective either. So, I am learning all the way through this.

Thanks for your support. So what do ya think??

09 September 2005, 11:16 PM
pretty straight lines

09 September 2005, 11:56 PM
Go for it its all about learning and having fun...hope you can find time to do more soon...:)

09 September 2005, 12:12 AM
LOL @ squib, you didn't have to go there, LOL! Nice stuff so far I hope to see something new sometime soon, sorry for not droppin' by earlier, I thought I posted somethin for your last image, I'll Holla!

09 September 2005, 10:10 AM
Squib: :p
element5: thankyou :)
beelow: thanks, Hopefully I can find the time to develope this idea.

09 September 2005, 03:13 PM
pretty straight lines

But they are!

Now go on painting :wip:

09 September 2005, 09:01 PM (

Hi all, another update. I have the basic building structure down at the moment (excuse crappy lgihting). I'm hoping to make these builidings explode and basically wreak destruction onto the city. I will add some figures later.

All crits welcome! Infact please crit I need all the advice I can get :D Thanks :)

09 September 2005, 09:59 PM
hey guys just to let you know...I'm probably going to scrap this idea, it's starting to bug me. I've thought of something better, probablly more complicated though...damn me and my complicatedness :p anyway thanks for you help I'd still like to hear what you think of the current sketch though.

Thanks :)

09 September 2005, 11:25 AM
Nice pics! Good luck!

09 September 2005, 10:25 PM
Any hints? :)

Will it explode? lol, sorry. I think the sketch you have now is nice, but I can't make pandorra's box out of it, could be just that you haven't defined it enough yet. Colours are intruiging, maybe some more darks would add to the nystique though. Just for effect.

09 September 2005, 08:46 PM (

Hiya, ok sticking with the Pandora's box idea for now.

This is an underground chamber found by explorers, they find the tomb of Pandora? not sure yet, but the box is hidded indside, they open it.

This is just a composition study for now, what do you think??

09 September 2005, 11:51 PM
cool new attemp, very promissing could add a labyrinth of stairs and a huge hall as entrance. hehe the greek touch is very cool, offers to paint a lot of details. keep it up Madalaine, I'll check back soon to see how you develop this, cant wait to see! go go go!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

09 September 2005, 08:27 AM
Glad to see you sticking with it....I am thinking maybe a low shot looking up from the ground at these two unfortunate characters. All this chaos and energy screaming upwards to the hole the guys/gals came through.....:) Just a thought :D

09 September 2005, 12:28 PM
I like it a lot, pandora's box idea is definetly spectacular... it could work very well, good luck madalaine!

(btw, it's curious but I've never managed to read your nick as "enialadam", when I look at it I always read "madalaine"...)

09 September 2005, 04:52 PM
*Waiting for update*

Idea of yours is good. Im waiting for your solution and aproach!

You gonna draw lots of spirits and stuff? Will that box be the main eye catcher?
Good luck!

09 September 2005, 04:33 PM
i think we all demend an update! :wip::wip::wip:

09 September 2005, 04:52 PM
this newest one is very good, work on it more

09 September 2005, 05:37 PM
the1st_angel: Thankyou, for the idea, sounds great!!

element5: thanks for your thoughts, I will see how I can link the idea with my other ideas :)

Falcor_: hehe I wish I had more time!! :D as son as I have a good couple of hours free I will get busy. I like the idea of spirits...I will have to have a think about that

Slav: :p yeah yeah tell me about it :D

Squibbit: lol Squib I love your short but sweet comments :D

Thanks everyone for the support, more updates soooooooooooooooooooooon :p

09 September 2005, 05:46 PM
ok...i like the padora's box concept..sounds very interesting..waiting to see more:thumbsup:

09 September 2005, 07:48 AM
this is interesting, but I need to see more to be able to say really anything,
cheers

09 September 2005, 05:32 PM
you might want to try another sketching technique, forget lines. Don't use small brushes, try to sketch out masses of color only. That will force out some interesting results.

Also try to place some objects near the camera by adding some really dark foreground elements. That will add nice depth to a sketch (I do it all the time)

10 October 2005, 07:58 PM
hey... are you working in sketches about pandora's box yet?

I like it... your last update is nice...:) I'll wait to see more...

10 October 2005, 05:53 AM
Hey, Madalaine, what's up ?

10 October 2005, 11:44 AM
Wow! Cool as in cold and cool simulthaneously! I like it and I enjoy the theme you chose. Hope seein' more soon! Till then, good luck!

10 October 2005, 10:07 PM
Hi Madalaine, great idea and definitely spectacular! Good luck with it :)

10 October 2005, 05:45 AM
Hey I love your sketches, You've challenged yourself again haven't you. You don't do easy but you sure are getting better and better for it. Have fun with the challenge.

10 October 2005, 03:17 AM
Nice coloring! I like the sketch.

10 October 2005, 04:44 PM
Thanks everyone! Your encouragement and advice is really wonderful.

I'm really sorry for how slow this is moving. At the moment I just keep getting bombarded with so much college art work. I have to design 2 or 3 books covers soon as part of a new unit so that will take sometime.

Looks like I may not be able to finish this :( I have a week off soon so hopefully I will be able to get a few more concepts finished and get started on the final design.

Thanks again

10 October 2005, 05:08 PM
ha, you cannot leave us here just teasing and then run and hide ;) hope you manage your covers and collegeworx quick and easily, relly wanna se ya finnishing this. go go go Madalaine!

11 November 2005, 10:10 PM
Lol sorry :( just have no time at the moment, so many dealines at college, sooooooooo much work to be done. I am constantly thinking up composition ideas though. I went to The Tate Britain today was very much inspired by Turners work...triggered off some ideas...ummmm.

So yeah who knows when I will get this thing going again. Really sorry to dissapoint you peeps :(

11 November 2005, 02:02 PM
Hi all, looks like I'm not going to be taking part in the chalenge. Don't have enough time right now, I really want it's just college is more important. I will also be taking time out from the online comunities they are becoming too much of a distraction right now. Thanks for all your support :)
