Latest Update: Final Image: Airborne (

09-05-2005, 12:11 PM (

The primary focus of my image will be...SOAPBOXES!

I'm going to try to capture the excitement, speed, danger and competition in a soapbox-race.

Since speed is often a good subject to get a dynamic and energetic image and I planned to go for a comic cartoon style, I translated the speed part into the kids' world of racing.

09-05-2005, 12:37 PM
hello and wellcome!!!best luck to you!:D
ummm...why cant i see ur sketches?they wont open...

09-05-2005, 01:18 PM
did that guy ever get his chicken bone? lol

nice so far man!!

09-05-2005, 07:25 PM
Heey, another Dutchman over here...! ;)

Cool stuff! Looks like a really nice, moody and 'different' idea! I really like it! :)

Have fun :bounce: & Find good luck! :) ,

09-06-2005, 01:17 AM
Good luck.:)

09-06-2005, 10:20 AM
Hey man! cool style, i like your lines. :) Will be keeping an eye on this. Good luck!

09-06-2005, 08:11 PM (

I'll elaborate on the current concept:

In the front, two kids are racing against eachother in the annual soapbox-race. The left kid is the bully-type of kid equipped with catapult, the right kid is the innocent victim in trouble at high speed.
In the back, under the start-banner are the two dads supporting their kid. :]

Main link to the theme 'Spectacular' is the high-speed, dangerous, exciting experience of a kid in such a race.

That's the idea, basically. Not too sure wether to go with this or try to squeeze out some other concepts. Let me know what you think! :)

(to all people in this thread: thanks & good luck to you too!)

09-07-2005, 12:04 AM (

A different approach. I thought the camera angle of the previous image wasn't very interesting, so I tried something else. :]

I'll work out the lighting and composition a bit more...and add some details on the way - just gonna see how it comes out.

09-07-2005, 12:26 AM
Hi Koekebakker
Very nice idea. I love the character so much. They look so cute. I like ur last picture 's composition. it looks more interested than previous one. I think u might put crowd people cheering kids on the background. it might makes image more spectacular. just my thought:)

best of luck

09-07-2005, 12:54 PM (

Flipped the canvas and added some details, lighting effects and background people/scenery (good idea keko). Perhaps I'll put some kids on the curve behind the racers as well..if there's enough space left.

More critiques and comments please! :)

09-07-2005, 01:21 PM
Very original style mister Koekebakker!! and so original idea:) ..that's a very good start  i like this cartoon picture . thanks to post in my thread man! GOOD LUCK TOO!!

09-07-2005, 02:10 PM
:scream: yeah, tad cartoony sketch, but I doubt you find as dynamic pic anywhere.. ;)

09-07-2005, 02:10 PM
Very fresh idea! Very bright and funny scetch :) Keep on and good luck

09-08-2005, 06:12 AM
thats looking awesome! i love the left to right composition with him in mid air.
The strength of the other onw though was to have him only just winning and in such close competition with the other guy. If you could get a competitor in the new composition.....
nice work man :)

09-08-2005, 11:09 AM
Cavematty: I know what you mean , I've been thinking about moving the elements a bit and getting a competitor next to him...I thought it should be on the foreground to make it obvious and get te dog on the sidewalk or something..hmm. I'll try something, thanks.

Fiolka Alexandre, Ranath, Hof: Thanks ! :)

09-08-2005, 11:22 AM
Haha very cool idea! kickass sketches!
I agree there should be a competitor coming alongside, maybe he/she could be cheating by trying to sabotage the other racer's soapbox, maybe a little cliche tho...

09-08-2005, 11:30 AM a sketch

09-08-2005, 11:31 AM
WTF my stupid brother just put that sketch while I was eating!!!:banghead:

09-08-2005, 12:43 PM
Uhh, ok :D Well no problem, you can always edit the post and put it in your own thread ofcourse. :P

09-08-2005, 01:50 PM
Good luck--this is really looking great! I love the cartoony style!

09-08-2005, 04:58 PM
Love the dynamic feeling of this! :) I also have a concept of a kid in high speed vechicle, cool to see other artists like you also have something similar in mind. (you know what they say? great minds think alike!) Hehe.

Is this you'r final composition?

Keep it up!

09-08-2005, 05:16 PM
Ha! I really like it! So bright and positive! :bounce: There's a lot of explosions and accidents... but a lack of good and positive ideas. I just can't wait to see the final result! Good luck!

09-09-2005, 07:51 PM (

I added a few background/foreground characters, shoved a part of the fence to the side to make room for elements in the left. I decided to leave the 'evil opponent' out, I didn't think it would work out in this image.

Not too sure about the bird now, I would like to know if it distracts too much from the 'jump'. Please let me know (any good ideas about other things are welcome too)!

(Thanks for the positive replies by the way! :))

09-09-2005, 08:27 PM
nice concept.

Good luck!

09-10-2005, 01:32 PM (

Background character.

09-10-2005, 02:01 PM (

..more background characters..

09-10-2005, 03:54 PM
heh looks really nice man!

09-13-2005, 07:19 AM
Ha-ha-ha! Great characters! Very good man! keep it up!

09-13-2005, 07:59 AM
very good illustration

09-14-2005, 02:55 AM (

Doing the line art...small comparison to the previous concept sketches.

09-14-2005, 03:24 AM
man i love ur sketch styles,it has the clasical cartoon character feel:thumbsup:also the way u play with their expression~cool stuff.keep it going and goodluck!:scream:

09-14-2005, 07:13 PM
I miss the true 'spectacular!'-feeling and the feeling of speed, because it lacks a proper composition: the objects (the carts) and people are too far away from the camera, the point of view is rather dull (I thought you would use a frogperspective), and the bird (if you're going to use it) should express more fear.
It'd also seem more interesting if the cart would almost crash into people, or side by side with another cart, or into a flock of birds who desperately try to escape.

09-14-2005, 11:47 PM
i like it so far ... very funny character design and with the basic colors you layed out its very pleasing to the eye somehow :D

09-15-2005, 12:21 PM
Colin: the reason for the placements of all elements is as follows: the focus isn't on the competitors or the crowd in the back; in fact, it's supposed to look like the main character is 'escaping' from the others with a giant boost/leap, hence, the others are less in the front.
By placing a few people to the side of the road I think it creates a good balance between background- and foreground people.
The point of view is chosen like this because I thought it was the best way to show both the height of the jump and the emotion on everyone's face. If I'd chosen a lower angle I don't think it would work out.
As far as a crash is concerned; that's not the main theme of the image (I didn't find the first concept with the near-crash very 'spectacular'). And the bird will be changed, yes. I'll work it out when doing the line art. :P

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I thought of a simple title for the piece, by the way; Airborne. Let me know what you think!

09-16-2005, 11:45 AM
your funny comic style brings in a good variety to the competiition. really nice work and good luck.

09-16-2005, 12:12 PM
Lovely style, koekebakker, and an original take on the subject. I love your character sketches, all really expressive, there's a wonderful narrative in their faces.

One minor suggestion, the cart looks kind of static at the minute, while the boy is full of energy and movement. Why not distort the cart a bit, like they do in animation, where the wholoe vehicle, or just the tyres, are really skewed to give the impression of speed. I think that would help with the feeling of speed and counterbalance the boys pose. But just a suggestion, I know it can be a pain in the butt redrawing linework, especially when it's so lovely!

09-16-2005, 02:23 PM
botho81: thanks a lot! :)

Zepyhri: Thanks! I agree with you on the lack of movement. Since I try to re-draw as little as possible I'll try to see how it looks with rotating wheels and the smoke trail + loose screws behind it, I hope that does the trick...if not, then I'll get out the eraser. :P Thanks for the advice!

09-17-2005, 10:02 AM
that's funny, nice perspective. Good luck!

09-19-2005, 08:30 PM
Hey man. Nice sketches, so lively. I really like the sense of iminent(?) danger in your first sketch, like the two were about to collide in a spectacular way. That precious moment of loosing control. I remember plowing through the hay bales after my brakes failed at the end of a cart race, I came third and won a soft toy....

09-20-2005, 06:46 AM
looks like this is going to be good.....great expressions!

09-20-2005, 04:03 PM
Haha, good work!love the sketc number 3:) Did you think about making some parts of the "car" bigger?or the "wings"?or putting a huge jet engine made of wood too, behind it?:D

GOOD LUCK!!

10-02-2005, 11:48 PM (

After a bit of a break, here's a new line art update. Let me know what you think!

10-03-2005, 01:36 PM (

One of the opponents.

10-03-2005, 02:19 PM
I love your style man!!! About the dog you have now... It's body is too big for it's head for starters and the position of the dog makes it look like it is skipping. Maybe try and have all four legs outstreched? One more thing... Have the ears back behind the head so that they are being affected by the wind (speed) and also maybe even have the fur of the dog affected by teh wind? I'm not sure but I know you will get it soon enough! :)

Oh P.S. I love your opponent guy! What do you use to sketch? Is it computer or... What is the media?

10-03-2005, 02:39 PM
He Koekebakker! Ziet er goed uit, cool sketches, looking good!
Cute characters, like this concept a lot!
Keep it up. Succes! :)

10-03-2005, 03:09 PM
Mason Roberts: Thanks. What exactly do you mean by 'skipping'? Does it look like he's hopping around like a kangaroo? :P I tried the legs stretched (as in one of the first colored concept sketches) but I think the running speed is more convincing with his legs crossed...hmm not too sure yet. The ears are already behind his head, by the way. But I guess it doesn't come across that way. I'll have a look at it in later stadium.

I only work digitally by the way, just PS + Wacom for me. :)

MichaelMotion: Thanks a lot, good luck to you too!

10-03-2005, 04:06 PM
Yea.. bouncing up and down!

Here is what I mean about the dogs ears and fur etc... (4 minute drawing) (

Do you get the idea even from my badly drawn picture?:)

10-03-2005, 06:02 PM
Haha, great. :) You're right about the fur, I'll add some dynamic fur in the coloring process, but not in the line-art itself. And perhaps I'll change the ears a little bit. It is supposed to look like they're bent backwards, but it's not really obvious, apparently. Thanks for the time to explain! :)

10-03-2005, 06:06 PM
Good luck man!!! Glad I could help!

10-04-2005, 03:28 AM
Love what you have done so far, I think it looks great, and you are doing a wonderful job of portraying the atmosphere of the race.

So who wins? :)

10-04-2005, 08:20 PM (

Added the third opponent and a few silhouettes which will function as a subtle background crowd.

10-04-2005, 08:35 PM
This made me smile! I really like it.. You should add a mad-scientist-guy in the background with a sign sayin thats my boy! :p

10-04-2005, 08:40 PM
Hehe, thanks, good idea, I might transform one of the people into a cheering inventor/scientist type. :D

10-04-2005, 08:43 PM (

See title. :]

10-05-2005, 12:25 AM
Funny stuff. I like it.

10-12-2005, 07:52 PM (

A bit over-detailed for a rough blockout, but it gives a pretty good idea how to continue.

I'll be adding the characters later this week, I hope, and see what has to be changed in the color composition. After that it's adding detail all the way. :)

10-16-2005, 02:46 PM (

Rough colors/shades done for main character.

10-16-2005, 03:13 PM
hehe, the expressions of your characters are great, the image looks very promising...

...are you going to leave the sky empty or are you planning to add something there? (clouds? birds?)

keep it up, good luck!

10-16-2005, 03:18 PM
Thanks. :] So far the sky stays empty. I thought about adding some clouds, but I still have to figure out where and how. I think I prefer a bright, clear blue sky.

10-17-2005, 08:01 AM

Lookin good! Great piece. Coole schets van kind met lolly! Some screws are loose, wouldn't it be cool to loose a tire.. Keep going!

10-17-2005, 01:30 PM
nice cartoony style... i like it!

10-23-2005, 09:17 PM
Nice! I love it! I think it's really funny and the 'honest' colors are great.

You could add some more sense of speed also some clouds wouldn't hurt :)

Nice work so far!

keep it up and good luck!

10-23-2005, 09:28 PM
MichaelMotion: thanks! A loose tire is a great idea, I'll try something as soon as I finish the overall rough colours. :)

Geci: Thanks!

Anthriel: yeah, still pondering about whether to add clouds, perhaps I'll do that. As far as the speed goes, you're right, originally I meant to get a feeling of high speed across, though I always get carried away with details which make the image lose its' sense of motion (bad habit :P). Thank you too, anyway. :)

10-25-2005, 12:48 PM
This is one of my favorite takes on the theme! Wonderful characters!

10-25-2005, 05:57 PM
I love the perspective, you have a great sketch line, i agree with give some notion of speed in the ilustration, Ah! almost forgot, your palette choice is wonderful the happy and warm colors i like a lot.

only pony
10-25-2005, 06:50 PM
Hey Koekebakker,

nice image, love the colors, nice sketches. I think Anthriel is right, you should add some clouds to fill up that empty blue sky or a big tree near the finishline. Good luck

10-26-2005, 09:10 AM
Nice and fresh style, nice flow in your drawings.
Don't hesitate to contrast it with some darker values.
Good luck.

10-26-2005, 12:09 PM
This one is indeed very original in this contest. No big eplosions and stuff. Like the style too.

However, I think the grey area of the road is too big and dull. It is a large area in your picture in which nothing interesting happens.

Inspired by the Red Bull Zeepkistenrace by the way :D ?

10-26-2005, 01:25 PM
Thanks for the comments and advice everyone.

only pony: you're right, i ought to fill it up with something. I'll post a few images later this week with some clouds, just to see how it looks.

Arctis: I guess I'm a little to cautious with shadows (also one of my bad habits ;)). I added a few darker parts right away and it already looks better.

yoitisi: In the original concept I drew a hedgehog covering for the cart, perhaps I'll use it to fill the space up a bit..if it won't distract too much, that is. (And no, not inspired by Red Bull actually ;))

I'll try to post an update within a few days.

10-26-2005, 01:52 PM
great work, you have a very unique style, it's nice to see works like this, keep up the great work

10-26-2005, 04:24 PM
Love ur style :D great idea as well, but u could rotate the whole image a bit to the left.. that how u'll get a more dynamic angle, which I think is the main key for the spectacularity for a racing theme. Keep doing the good work man! :)

10-27-2005, 04:02 PM (

Okay, I followed up NinjaASSN's advice and rotated the entire image a bit.
I also added some rough clouds as you can see..I think I like them, but I don't want to make them too obvious and distracting..let me know what you think.

Colors/contrast are not set yet, I will play around with the background colors and the front guy's silhouette some more.

10-29-2005, 10:06 AM
Hi man! I think u did a good job here! The clouds really bring a lot to the image, so u should keep them. U can blur it a bit, or a bit more or even more... and u'll see at what point they wont disturb u anymore. Bluring should help in my opinion. Keep up the good work!

10-29-2005, 12:58 PM (

Some adjustments and additions. Hope to get a better sense of speed by blurring the sky/road/fences a bit.

10-31-2005, 08:52 PM
Amazing stuff!!!

Really exciting and emotional! Nice perspective also..... I don`t even know what to criticize.... maybe pose of the dog is a little bit strange (out of perspective).

Good luck!

11-01-2005, 01:49 AM (

A black & white version to check the contrast. I'll probably add some more contrast when I'm working out the details, but as for now, I think the hierarchy in the image is allright, with the main subject attracting the eye first.

I also added a character on the front-left to fill up the space. It looks a bit more crowded now, I think.

11-02-2005, 01:32 PM
I think you could push the contrast a bit more, but its hard to tell, my image looks completely different at home than at work. Cant wait to see the final!

11-03-2005, 11:23 PM (

Beginning to paint the hi-res details. First close-up, many to come. ;)

11-04-2005, 05:47 AM

Nice Tones And Lighting....very Well Done

11-17-2005, 05:03 PM (

Main character, lollypop-kid and the dog are (kind of) finished.

11-17-2005, 06:25 PM
This one going to be great image! i like idea, style and characters, keep great working :applause:

11-23-2005, 10:46 PM
hehe.. this cartoony style fits so well to this topic. I just coming back to see this piece one again and again :D

12-03-2005, 04:35 PM
Thanks everyone!

I didn't have access to Internet the last couple of weeks so couldn't update much, but that doesn't mean I haven't done anything - in fact, I have finished the image, at last!

See below for a few close up WIP's, followed by the final image.

12-03-2005, 04:36 PM (

Background characters.

12-03-2005, 04:39 PM (

And more background characters.

12-03-2005, 05:18 PM (

I added pretty much all the details I wanted to. I have been thinking about adding something like a hedgehog to the bottom right, but I don't think it is really necessary now (plus, I have been working on this image WAY too long, it's time to call it quits ;))

12-03-2005, 05:24 PM (

Final adjustments done:

- Repainted large parts of the sky. Added a slight touch of red and yellow and used a custom brush to get a more dynamic feeling.

- Added bright white/yellow to the trail of smoke behind the cart. It makes the burst of flame stand out a bit more against the background.

- Last minute decision: I changed the size of the dog, it's smaller now and less distracting.

I want to thank everyone for their comments and crits, it really helped to keep up the motivation during these three months. It was a great challenge. Cheers!

12-03-2005, 07:30 PM
Haha, funny concept! I love it!

12-03-2005, 08:59 PM
Congrats, Geoffrey:) a funny picture and a funny jump!A good and spectacular start, heheGood luck!!!
