Here the concept sketch. It will be an antic character lifting a tree.

Basically the picture will be focus on him but I'm planning add some running animals around like bunnies and birds.

Because what is spectacular for us could frightening for someone else.

I don't know if I will be able to create all of this but I will try to put all my energy in it...

Wow, one ought to be pretty damn massive in muscles to do that. Well you had me say wow at first sight, that says alot haha. Im awaiting to see alot of expression from this piece, with such a good start, im sure you'll be of to a good run with the rest of the contest aswell, ill be looking forward to your progress.

I like the concept, although I think you will have to wokr on making it a bit stronger. I did think about making a person lift something heavy showing off his/her spectacular strength, but I think adding a twist may make it a bit stronger. Hope you find something to make it stand out above the rest:thumbsup: .

Actually you are surely right but I would like to add these little animals for the meaning of the scene so I have to see the ground... But I'm still looking for a better composition...

Ok modelling time, I start this head today for the character.Some part will be deformed for sure considering the effort. I tried to keep a human aspect, so no giant jaw or neck, just a good muscle definition.

Ok people I will fix that , apparently you guys aren't ok with that , honestly I found the tiny lips give him something special but maybe in a wrong way.

off to a great start... the model is taking shape really good... topology looks okay but the mesh looks a bit boxy, mayb bcause u just started working on it... another thing is i prefer his lips and nose be a little lower... and the chin should be more prominent outside and mayb a thicker lower lip would give him a bit more personality. Well thats all for me now.. hope to c a lot of u around!! :thumbsup:

Hi Zapan!
Good modelling so far. The only crit I could make is that your guy doesn't have the face of a strong guy due to his head's shape. You should try to make him larger jaws, stronger nose, shorter ears, and maybe also a larger face.
( Ca vaut ce que ca vaut hin c'est juste mon humble avis mais vu sa tete il a pas l'air capable de soulever un arbre :) D'un autre coté ca peut faire qqch d'original... Faut attendre a suite pour voir :) )

My mind is split between two differents kind of feeling concerning the head shape. According to the crits you guys see more lines of strengh on head.I thought more a stylized athletic greek icon like a sculpture. So I draw this to illustrate the two differents visions of the head.I request your help to find the style which fit better to the character.
The first one (starting from the left) would would be a more muscular head , more believable but lost the mythologic feeling a litlle, I think. The second would be more a traditional representation of an greek athlete.And the third one , the first idea that I had in mind more stylized, not so strong but helped by his gods...

personaly i think the secund face could be a great idea... why not? it's most spectacular to see a man not very strong raise a tree than a big man...

it's just my opinion but i think it could be a more interesting to make its choice...:shrug:

if this is for the first one then yes, you should do as collings said....one of the first thing is the nose...it is too Smooth

Riev comment I think was very prtinent in this case... I have to admit that body modelling is not 100% my cup of tea... I really like what you do and the last faces sketches are really interesting. Sure you are in the right way, I continue to follow what you do with interest...

There was a story in our legends. A character was chained to a tree to prevent him from helping his friends in a brutal and a kind of "less chance to win" battle.

He tries to unchain himself but fails.

Later he comes to the battleground near to the end with an extracted tree still chained in his back.

I remembered that when i inspect your sketch.

I tried 2 different kind of expression.
According to your comments the second one will work a little more.But as not sure to give the right lookin to it I experimented both.I realise that both of them need to be improve a lot but that is just a test to see If I'm able to put some feelings in it.
The first one , is illustrating more anger and rage by the effort and certainly more pain.
And the second is obviously more elegant and athletic feeling and also more easy.
I require one more time your advices to get the most believable look.

Both work really well, but maybe the bottom is a little better. I would also close the eyes (although you were probably going to do that:p ). Hope you add viens and show more muscles flexing. Keep it up.

This is coming along great. I like the expression when his lips are pursed. I think it shows more emphasis on him struggling, or maybe the muscles in his neck flexing as well as some viens popping out, more of a pooping look, if you know what I mean. But anyway, keep it up, cant wait to see more.

So I'm assuming you will be making the tree bark and the guys viens and tendons in zbrush? Sounds like fun! Good luck and this is coming along great. Are you using an anatomy book for the muscles or some ref pics of body builders from a google search? Just curious. I'm gonna have to deal with a lot of anatomy on mine and I don't know if I should buy a book on it myself. Do you think buying a book on anatomy is unavoidable... cause I'm BROKE. Lol.

@ ace4016 : Thanks James. Actually I didn't think to close his eyes yet. Of course it will add some expressivity in this head but maybe with eyes open it will add some too ,surely different. Eyes color , what is he look at.... few things to make a different expression. I don't know and maybe it will be better with eyes close. I will experiment that when I will start textures. Yeah all the references is mostly recommended for everything , not only anatomy. I guess that more you know about the stuff you want to create , more they will be realistic so believable. You can find anat sketches on the web, books... it will helps you anywhere anytime IMHO.

@ Ramtin_moom : Thx a lot , didn't think about the hair yet too , but blond hair for sure , maybe curly hair... I don't know :shrug:

These expressions are really strong and spectacular, but I always prefer that with the closed mouth, which represents better the effort :buttrock: . With the first, we feels just a strong anger.

This is looking great. The first one conveys a lot more emotion to the viewer than the second one so my vote has to go towards the first.

Many thanks to all of you people. Don't have so much time to work on this lately but I will update that soon. I see that everybody is working really hard for this challenge and I told myself that I need and I want to do the same.

@ Lemog : Thx heavens and you're soo right I guess I'm on for the second one too, several things still bother me with it but I will start the body , I have to move on a little and I will fix it later. Many thx to you for all these advices and support.

I gues you can solve your problem with facial expression of the character by modelling top part of body. You see the expression of the face also depends on position of the head and neck.

Anyway I like your "ecological" consept. And nice modelling too.

I would suggest looking up some pictures of the anatomy of the neck. I don't want to bother drawing it all out, but lets just say that the artery coming down from the ear is the only artery coming down the side of the neck. Your model has two arteries coming down (the one coming down from beneath the jaw shouldn't be there). Also, the main artery that you did model (the one coming down from the ear) splits at the bottom (which is probably why you assumed there were two arteries coming down). Hope that helps.

I will try to make it a little longer although I'm not really worried for the rig because I will just put bones really quickly to give him the pose and lot of muscle configuration will change.So I guess that I will do a lot of tweaking.

Here's finally the complete body. I tried to be carefull on the muscle definition but there surely be some mistakes.I guess that still need lot of tweaking there. Now I can get him a pose and start detailling correctly each part.

Some excellent modeling here.

It looks like he has a bit of a double chin, which is odd considering how ripped he is otherwise. At a glance i'd say there is a bit too much of a crease where the pectorals meet the shoulder muscle and the forearms look a bit bent from the front...

Just nit-picking really, overall it looks really good. :thumbsup:

Face is awesome, no crits there.

But just as the Gpepper pointed at you, some areas need some tweakings. Basicly, go grab some anatomy references of the shoulder/biceps/Belly/back/wrists area and when modeling just follow the flow of the muscles and bone structure. It really feels here like you're making common mistakes modelers do when they modeling intuitively or by memory.

But it's on a good way to be a good looking model, keep it up !

Don't let this bring you down man :thumbsup: ...you got the base already set up here, it just need some lil tweaks to get the proper creasing at some key point. The more you go into details the more difficult it is to have the proper wiring without having too many polys in your model, I'm not a real expert over the matter, my anatomy knowledge is somehow limited, but here's a safe investement to improve dramaticly your skills over the matter.


Even though it is mentionned to be Zbrush-Maya specific, it is most valuable at a more general level. That dude, Zack Petroc, really kicks some serious ass in anatomy, very good tutorial Dvd.

I think your entry could really work.
Looking at the guys anatomy I don't see anything obviously wrong.
It just looks like there's a little more tweaking to go?

Getting into details I've noticed that some of his muscles look a little flat.
To be more specific, his abs, shoulders and thighs look like they need shaping.
Also the back of his hands and the way they meet with the wrists.

Otherwise the face has a lot of character (?) and the proportions seem right.

I'm just not sure about his neck. It looks too massive to me. Also I hink you could add some extradetails (like veins or scars) for you character. Since you got only one character in the scene all attention will be drawn to him, so he must look as better as posible:wise:.

Excellent job on the clothes and the character is really starting to come together. I would suggest that you spend some more time on the wrinkles between the chest muscles though because they look a little bit unnatural to me. Also, the abs have large, unnatural looking gaps in between them. Outside of that, great job and good luck!

Eheheh - That face expression is perfectly suited to that situation!

Ive been pretty quiet on this one of late - thats cos theres nothing to crit on, ive just been watching how youre progressing. Its looking great so far. My only comment would be that his muscles could be a little more defined and OTT to show the sheer strength of him.

Here the first shot for the pose. Still a lot to do on arms especially hands before adding extra details.

Good, but try to move his head a little bit to the left shoulder. I mean, that most people performing this kind of action use their shoulders. So put the tree to his right shoulder and move his head to the left shoulder. In this case his pose will be more natural. I think.
