09 September 2005, 08:25 AM (

Hi there! :)

That's not really the kind of picture I usualy do but I'm gonna try to make something anyway:)

Here is a idea: a sort of ship flying over a river closer to its surface, in an xploding city. I don't even know how the ship or the city will look like but here is a quick done sketch illustrating this idea:

09 September 2005, 08:31 AM
Have fun and good luck reiv , i really enjoyed your last challenge ...hope to see more of that crazy good looking stuff .:bounce:

09 September 2005, 04:14 PM
Thanks guys for your commets!
Here is another update! It took me the afternoon to unwrap the two main shapes. I don't even imagine how long it will take to do the same thing to the upcoming buildings :/
I think it is easy to do for architectural things than organic things...
And your spaceship is quiet organic...

09 September 2005, 04:34 PM
ready steady go and reiv is gone .give us guy a chance. but the ship is looking cool though

09 September 2005, 06:44 PM

09 September 2005, 04:02 AM
The ship's looking really great!! Can't wait to see the buildings and other things in the scene. :)

09 September 2005, 04:48 PM (

The reactors!
I've spent a lot of time trying to think about the complete scene and I think I'm not gonna make a city with the ship flying over the river... I have another idea with this same ship but in a semi natural environement an with a lot of hum... elephants... falling from the sky :x It's gonna be quite odd :)

09 September 2005, 04:54 PM
Nice start. More More:thumbsup:

09 September 2005, 04:55 PM

Hi Olivier,

Looks cool! Your MnS Chall. was a really fine piece. wish you best luck :wavey:

09 September 2005, 10:54 PM
Nice design Olivier... I like the style of the tubes canalisation, with right angle... that give a very original thing in accordance with the ship design... continue like that mate, you rocks

09 September 2005, 11:05 PM
very impressive, félicitations.

09 September 2005, 11:27 PM
An unusual, but nice change from your usual lady goodness!

Nice ship design! A bit phantom menacy, what with all those curves and shiny surfaces.

Looking forward to more updates

09 September 2005, 11:45 PM
Hi, :wavey:

waouw, you work very fast!!
The ship is really cool! Agree with Andy H for the phantom menace look...but you've done it really well, i like it!!!

I'm waiting to see more:)

ps: i love your image for M&S Challenge!!

09 September 2005, 12:52 AM

Awesome progress so far. I can't wait to see all that you come up with.

09 September 2005, 03:36 AM
Boy are you fast! Took me weeks to make a vehicle (on and off, but still). Will you be goign for a realistic render in the final?

09 September 2005, 05:10 AM
Wow sucha lovely update and amazing reactor you have ! I love all the shininess of the surface. Amnazing job so far!

09 September 2005, 05:29 AM
Great looking ship you have there.Falling elephants, now that would be spectacular.

09 September 2005, 06:43 AM
really nice materials! Great start - nice to see such good stuff so early... :)

09 September 2005, 07:05 AM
Thanks guys :)
Everything's done with 3dsmax
Rendered with mentalRay. The shiny reflections are just due to an HDRI env. map.
Today I'm gonna try to finish the ship :)

09 September 2005, 07:14 AM
Ouaou ! Mental ! Kept silent mastery really indeed, because I dont find it easy :)
Keep up the good work :)

09 September 2005, 07:17 AM
good luck olivier, I like your work ;) !!

09 September 2005, 09:17 AM
Impressive textures and modeling... But is it a surprise ?

09 September 2005, 09:39 AM
Hello, it's a very nice ship with a little organics form, I like it !

Reactors details are very fine and the ship texture are good and very shiny.

Good luck.

my spectacular link : (showthread.php?threadid=274781)

09 September 2005, 10:15 AM
Nice ship. Though I'd thicken the "wings/fins" and fuselage a little (like in the back above the engines) and possibly have some harder edges (creases) around the engines. Organic is nice, but for realism might be worth looking into. Great job. Keep it up!

09 September 2005, 10:18 AM
Thats looking really nice! I really like that.

09 September 2005, 10:40 AM
nice, keen and fast.. i like .. on the way olivier..!

09 September 2005, 11:24 AM
Man, your really starting to pimp this out....this ship is hot.

Subscribing....skills with the polies :buttrock:

09 September 2005, 04:00 PM
very nice mats

09 September 2005, 04:02 PM
The ship is looking wonderful. Reminds me alot of the Naboo ships from Episode 2...

09 September 2005, 04:19 PM
elephants falling from the sky!! :applause: :bounce:
me loves that :)

09 September 2005, 09:36 AM

I love your style

09 September 2005, 10:24 AM
extrelly nicelly done reiv... very pretty render too..

09 September 2005, 10:59 AM
This is a really nice render you've got going....
I haven't even started thinking about materials with mine yet...
pretty impressive how much you've already gotten done!

09 September 2005, 11:32 AM
For something that is not your style and speciality i congrats you, the beginning of the engine is very nice yet !

I think i'll enjoy watching your wip :)

Good luck !

09 September 2005, 12:05 PM
you mean you aren't making a girl?:D
so far looking good.
good luck!

09 September 2005, 12:19 PM
Dude, that model is looking pretty spectacular already! I love the metalic shaders, and the details on the engine. I can't wait to see the enviroment modeled and textured, this is going to be a good one. Keep up the stellar work. Alexi.

09 September 2005, 01:03 PM
Yikes, Olivier! That is very impressive already! You do know that you've got three months? Three whole months! Must I quit already?

09 September 2005, 06:54 PM (

Thanks for your comments :)
Here it is again, almost finished. I'm not sure about the ornaments sizes, I've tryed different ones and these looks quite goog imho.

09 September 2005, 06:57 PM
Wow! Ace work!
The ship design is really good. Kinda reminds me of a victorian vic viper (the ships from the gradius games)
I love the brassy metal texture and those little motifs work excellently. Really fast work too.
The only thing im not too keen on is the pink cockpit glass.

When you gonna start on the environment? Im sure that will turn out ace too

09 September 2005, 07:40 PM
I liked the concept very much, just one complain.. The looking of the new silver metal for the mover, and the antique look for the other parts... maybe a little dust over the mover can make whole plane from the same epoch...

EDIT: epoch = age... Sorry :D

09 September 2005, 08:36 PM
Veeeery well done! I like especially colors. I don't know why but it reminds me of Flash Gordon movie ...(or should I go to a shrink) ;)

09 September 2005, 08:51 PM
Amazing shaders for the ships and the motif give it a really nice style.
I'm subscribe, i'm waiting to see more.
Good work!!

09 September 2005, 09:41 PM
The only thing im not too keen on is the pink cockpit glass.

Didn't you know, his Pink Sugar girl will be the pilot:D .

Great work reiv, the motif's definetly make this ship stand out amongst others. Being that there doesn't seem to be any weapons (or im not noticing it) and the elegant designs on the ship, this is pretty much a futurictic luxury car, isnt it? Waitng for the enviroment.

09 September 2005, 10:08 PM
This ship are very nice, with a little Nautilus look like !!! It's a very fine texturing, and ornaments are a good idea !

But perhaps back ornaments (near the central reactor) are just a little so large...

09 September 2005, 12:47 AM
• Great texturing Olivier! looks like u have one model less to finish! great 4 u

Tee Double U
09 September 2005, 01:47 AM
Interested to see where you take this concept.

Good luck

09 September 2005, 02:56 AM
It's looking really ace man, can't wait for updates.:bounce:

09 September 2005, 07:31 AM
About ornaments, I don't sure... It's certainly good to have a kind of contrast between ornaments and the ship design, the disturbing thing is the scale, as we don't have any reference about size for this vessel, that's just give us by these motifs. 2 solutions for me, find another ornaments with adequation scale, or delete them. Good continuatiuon

09 September 2005, 08:15 AM
Excellent models and shaders here!

I am however going to agree with Lemog about the ornaments, they do actually mess with the perception of scale here, and combined with the very clean, soft shinyness of the materials involved, the entire vessel looks very small.

09 September 2005, 08:22 AM
With the decorative stuff on the ship, the ship looks really classic and very cool looking. The texture and color works are also superb.

09 September 2005, 01:29 PM
Very original design! Does it speed along water or air? I'm guessing water because of the thin.
It's great to be able to visit a thread thats so developed already!

09 September 2005, 01:33 PM
very nice ships and your metal shaders with these various defuse patterns are excellent well done.!

09 September 2005, 03:30 PM
I was going to wish you luck but you don't look like you need it! :)

09 September 2005, 11:35 PM
Incredible stuff man ,you do nothin' but amaze me, good luc k reiv!

09 September 2005, 10:02 AM
Great work olivier. Especially like the little "dorures".
To crit a little (it's so rare for one of your work :scream:), I think that the 3 "cylinders" on each side doesn't seems really attach to the ship. Maybe because of the lighting or just because it needs some objects/textures when they collide with the ship. Well it's a so little detail in a big great work.

09 September 2005, 09:11 AM
Nice ship with nice rendering. Your work is amazing. I thought too that the ornaments looked a little bit weird, but I didn't how to say it-the critics of other people are more clear than mines. :)

Good luck!

09 September 2005, 01:53 PM
hi reiv thats a super fine model! love the cool details in it.. and unique texturing!

09 September 2005, 02:55 PM
Niiiiiice, different ship concept! looks so great

09 September 2005, 10:04 AM
Hi reiv

Well.. nothing new: Great ship, nice ornaments on it! :D
keep it going!

09 September 2005, 06:46 PM
wow nice ship design

09 September 2005, 12:57 PM
very cool ship

09 September 2005, 05:32 PM (

Here its is(again...)
Thanks for your comments guys!
For those who asked, I completely did this design of the ship. My aim is to create something fast and elegant.

09 September 2005, 05:35 PM
wonderfull job reiv..

keep it up !!

09 September 2005, 05:49 PM
Great work on those flags - a nice touch!
You have certainly succeeded - it looks very elegant and fast.

Fantastic work so far

09 September 2005, 06:09 PM
...My aim is to create something fast and elegant....

Well, you made a great work so far 'cause your ship seams to be fast and it looks pretty elegant :scream:

Really like this last update

09 September 2005, 01:22 PM
Amazing ship.... "Simplement abusé, je sais même plus écrire en anglais, c'est trop beau... "

09 September 2005, 08:57 PM
Hi Oliver,

Original ship design... nice details

it looks luxurious and powerful... i like it:thumbsup:

09 September 2005, 11:29 PM
Beautiful model and design, lovin' every posting of it,hollA!

09 September 2005, 08:34 AM
Amazing is the first word that comes to mind when I look at your ship design. The flag touches are really really awesome. Can't wait for updates:eek:

09 September 2005, 09:54 AM
it is very elegant design after all! nice idea for the cloth, it's a unique flare and really adds alot to the design.

09 September 2005, 10:23 AM (

Hi, here is a rendering test of the background, I've decided to make my scene somewhere in the air, this suits better the ship design. I also tryed with a ground but I didnt like that.

09 September 2005, 10:30 AM
it's great reiv .... nice environment this scene will be amazing for sure :applause:

09 September 2005, 10:35 AM
Dude you're fast, those are some kickass shaders you got!

I'm watching!

09 September 2005, 10:36 AM
Yes, looks great.

09 September 2005, 11:02 AM
the furthest rock-form looks like it's too behind the clouds. unless it's the size of the moon, it looks a little odd!

09 September 2005, 11:26 AM
It looks like you lowered the opacity on those 2 rock forms! Did you do that on purpose? Lookin' good so far Reiv, I'll be back soon, holla!

09 September 2005, 11:53 AM
I really love it ! These flags behind give it a really cool look ! Elegant is the word, as you said before !

09 September 2005, 12:56 PM
ัyou are very fast! and awesome test render , I like color!

09 September 2005, 01:40 PM
Awesome stuff!

09 September 2005, 04:16 PM
Is this background a painting? Or a photo? Is it projected onto a sphere?

Great job so far. Just wondering how some of this stuff is pulled off!

09 September 2005, 11:32 PM
Very beautifull shot, I wondered how these things float in sky.
I like colors so much. Good luck.

09 September 2005, 03:14 AM
Excellent, like the idea of a background in the sky... great test... i'm waiting to see more!! :bounce:

09 September 2005, 06:48 AM
Your inviroment looks pretty cool.

09 September 2005, 04:52 PM
Hi guys, thanks for your comments :)

It's quite simple to make such an invironement: 3 shapes with noise modifier and good diplacement maps for the rocks, a plane for the layer of cloud and a slight fog to get everything looks fine. And 3 lights!
Here is the wire, as you can see its quite simple ;)

09 September 2005, 04:59 PM
The ship looks wonderful. Very nicely done, the flags rerally add something to it.

The environment you are doing looks alright. Something about the "rocks" makes them look fuzzy and not quite solid. I'm not sure what it is exactly.

09 September 2005, 12:35 AM
It's quite simple to make such an invironement: 3 shapes with noise modifier and good diplacement maps for the rocks, a plane for the layer of cloud and a slight fog to get everything looks fine. And 3 lights!

I get the rocks... but I was refering to the sunset and the background and the ground clouds. Are you saying that you just projected that stuff from a photograph onto a 2d plane and rendered it that way?

09 September 2005, 05:38 AM
Simple but efficient... for a beautiful background

09 September 2005, 06:37 AM
simple is beatyful  and your textures are top  . speechless

09 September 2005, 06:45 AM
Hey, nice background! The composition is looking good!

09 September 2005, 06:46 AM
Nice work - its a bit too 'fantasy' for my liking, but its nice. As usual, the reiv masterclass in simplicity shows us that you dont need super detailed geometry to get good results!
I think you should check out some of Makoto Shinkai's anime works such as 'voice of a distant star' and 'The Place Promised in Our Early Days'. He does spectacular background work - especially ones involving dramatic, sunset skies. I think some bolder, more solid clouds would make this more dramatic.

Here are some examples of his work:

09 September 2005, 03:20 AM
Love the colours Olivier. I have no doubt this will be one of ther best in there. Really like hte concept so far too!

09 September 2005, 09:39 AM (

Thanks for your comments guys.
I'm now modelling teh elephants, I'll finish the backgroungd later.

09 September 2005, 10:54 AM
Where the heck does an elephant come into a scene like this? Please explain!

Looking good so far - ive noticed from your models that you tend to rely on subdivision quite a lot! The base mesh for that elephant must be really simplistic and low poly.

09 September 2005, 11:34 AM
An elephant ?
Did I miss something ?

09 September 2005, 11:40 AM
An elephant ?
Did I miss something ?
Just the end of the trump :scream: hahahaha

Nice steps of elephant modeling Olivier... but why ? :)

09 September 2005, 11:51 AM
hey reiv good luck on that challenge , i know your stuff and I like your works your very talend I look forward to see your final image, see ya

09 September 2005, 12:34 PM
This is a very nice elephant! But if his ears are large enough to fly...
I like everything I see so far and I'm curious of your further concept (and the elephant:) )

09 September 2005, 08:33 AM (

He it is. Manually unwraped and painted in PS (old school way ;)

09 September 2005, 08:52 AM
Very well done. The texture looks very realistic. (Old school rulz) I think you may use a lower amount of bump - cheers

09 September 2005, 08:57 AM
Thanks for your comments guys. It's an African elephant, not an Asian one, that's why it has large ears. And indeed, it's quite lowpoly, about 1300 polys without the meshsmooth modifier.

So, why an elephant? That's quite hum... simple. As you may have seen before, there are rocks floating in the air. Higher in the sky, elephants live on floating continents, and, once all the 348 lunar months, the old males, commit suicide while jumping into space. That's why we'll see here elephants falling from the sky :)

09 September 2005, 12:57 PM
hehe ... nice explanation! looking forwards to see where you take it

09 September 2005, 01:21 PM
you did a great job on the texturing..... i also love the concept...

keep going mate!

09 September 2005, 01:41 PM
Ok cool ! nice texture ! even if it's done in the old school way !

09 September 2005, 01:59 PM
nice work buddy.keep it up.:bounce:

09 September 2005, 03:32 PM
Hm... Bizzarre idea, and im not sure i really like the idea of space elephants on floating islands, but im sure you will pull it off superbly and prove me wrong :)

09 September 2005, 03:35 PM
What an awesome elephant you got there! Amazing in every aspects!

09 September 2005, 08:04 AM (

Burning elephant!

09 September 2005, 08:11 AM
And now a burning elephant! Mais Oui!

I think you might actually be mad but nevertheless this thread is very entertaining. Oh, and the modelings bloody good too.

Keep up this Pythonesque insanity!

09 September 2005, 08:15 AM
cool burning elephant

09 September 2005, 08:22 AM
Interesting way for your elephant Olivier... :scream:

09 September 2005, 08:25 AM
Great work Reiv.
I was not really enjoyed seeing a 'classic' race scene... Now I know you merged the race into the sky, I'm quite interested in your project.

09 September 2005, 09:10 AM
So, why an elephant? That's quite hum... simple. As you may have seen before, there are rocks floating in the air. Higher in the sky, elephants live on floating continents, and, once all the 348 lunar months, the old males, commit suicide while jumping into space. That's why we'll see here elephants falling from the sky :)That's hilarious man, thanks for that. :applause:

Great stuff so far, I look forward to see where this is going. Only 1300 base polygons, and looking so good... good job!

09 September 2005, 09:23 AM
Wow reiv, what an amazing work mate, I just love your spaceship... and your background scene look awesome. Great job.

09 September 2005, 09:38 AM
lovely stuff!!, love to wake up , come to work and see a burning elephant :D

09 September 2005, 12:48 PM
OOoohh nice... starting to get interesting now!

09 September 2005, 01:00 PM
Wow! Spectacular burning elephant! Very cool work, as always

09 September 2005, 01:54 PM
Great burning elephant.

09 September 2005, 06:50 AM
lol the burning elephant... very strange things :scream:
Cool model and very impressive texture, superbe !

09 September 2005, 06:51 AM
and i thought i was sick.... lol.. keep em coming mate

09 September 2005, 11:11 AM
Great! I like how the trunk and legs of the elephant seems to be eaten away by lava!!

09 September 2005, 05:45 PM
The stuff is still waesome.

09 September 2005, 07:18 PM
Ah oui c'est bien ça!

So elephants do burn on re-entry.
That's really lucky, otherwise imagine how an elephant could fall on your head
just as you walk out the front door :D

09 September 2005, 07:56 PM
Wow, modeling is great and the mapping is fantastic

09 September 2005, 08:54 PM
wahaha :D Crazy !
I love this freaky idea
Great work on the elephant

09 September 2005, 07:42 PM
Nice stuff oliver, keep it up , loving the textures on the elephant, good luck guy!

10 October 2005, 04:29 PM
Awesome character as always Olivier , burning parts are really well done.

Update update :bounce:

10 October 2005, 06:37 PM (

Hi there,
Here's a big update. Im trying here to put everything to gether, to get a nice composition. I'm going to fill the remaining empty spaces (particularly the lower right corner) with rocks and maybe birds (swans?). Or maybe building coming from through clouds...

10 October 2005, 06:48 PM
Great job on texture ! Nice model !

10 October 2005, 06:49 PM
Stay off the drugs!

Looks really nice, but i think the composition needs some 'oomph' - 2 elements motion blurred doesnt look as intresting as any of your earlier ideas, and to a new viewer, this may seem a bit bizzarre - like space poachers shooting floating elephants....
I love those colours though - especially the sky.

10 October 2005, 08:19 PM
Nice colors and the fire and design of the spaceship look really cool. Must agree, though- the image is pretty confusing.

10 October 2005, 12:08 AM
Hi Oliver,

at first, I love your work!!
and.. your concept 4 this challenge!!

But i have some doubts on your scene.. please forgive me :hmm:
Why shoud this ship fires at the Elefant?... why are they falling down from the sky?... where are they falling from?... Is this Elefant evil?... or is the pilot from the ship is just bad...

How about a rupturing planet planet above where the animals are falling down... and the ship is trying to avoid to crash into one of it... or something like that?!
Just a thought you are the boss

At the moment your scene has a lot of potential... but it looks also a bit confusing right now! But i´m sure you will make a great thing out of it!!

Crossing thumbs on this! keep up the awesome work!!
Cheers  Alex

10 October 2005, 02:47 AM
Hahahahaha!... Great concept.

Maybe an elephant/aircraft collision in the background would look good.

10 October 2005, 03:24 AM
• Nop, I am not drunk!...those are indeed flying elephants:wise:, hahaha, good concept, and you are already final efecting and compositing! great job!

10 October 2005, 05:38 AM
For some weird reason this is one of the most disturbing pieces in the challenge... in a good way though... it managed to get feelings ranging from suprise to admiration in me... Great work...

10 October 2005, 11:45 AM
Poor elephant!

Still, it's something you definitely don't see everyday! :D

10 October 2005, 11:50 AM
Don't know if the directional blur is needed....
Seems strange to me...

10 October 2005, 11:54 AM
Ha ha,. thats something you don't see every day:thumbsup:

looks very good, a bit too much motion blur tho.

good work!

10 October 2005, 03:31 PM
Oliver my man, I'm loving it. I think just like the great artists from our past your, new ideas, are controversial.

I think it's an brilliant idea and I think you should stick with it. Once you've got other story elements in the backdrop it'll communicate what’s going on better.

I like the composition idea, but I think there should be a greater distance between the elephant and the ship. The elephant looks like he won't evaporate in time and will collide with the ship.

10 October 2005, 05:55 PM
Thanks guys for you comment it's really helpful  Concerning the distance between the ship and the elephant, I think the closer they are, the more spectacular it is. I mean it looks like its the final flight of the elephant and of the pilot too.
You're right about the motion blur I'm going to reduce it. I'll also make a city far on the ground. Anyway tahnks again for your crits.

10 October 2005, 10:05 AM (

Hi there!!
I'm still working on the background. I wanted to make a city above the cloud. It's viewed from quite far that's why I didn't want to model each building. So I tryed this technic and it seems to work great :).
About the story : the ship on the previous picture is trying to disintegrate the elephants before they crash in the city.

10 October 2005, 10:18 AM
Dammit reiv - you and your insanely high and complex poly counts!
Sheesh - you could remake the incredibles using a primitive sphere and make it look good!

Looking good so far. Im still a bit concerned about the whole 'spaceship shooting elephant' idea though. Strange or not, it will sure look nice :)

10 October 2005, 01:51 PM
Well olivier, it's been a long time I saw your thread and it's a huge progress. I really, really, the environnement; Big sensation of high, beautiful colors....Nothing to crit.

Animal, spaceship, I had this in my spectacular but I can't fight.

A little crit however. I had read all the thread (too much replies :scream:) and I think the concept is not understanble at the 1st sight. The concept of Elephant falling is great. Spaceship also; But the reason of the fact is firing him is more strange; Is it to destroy it before he crash on the land ??
Anyway it's original and that's something good.

A litlle thing to add, maybe the flagwould be interssant in another color just to detach them from the bg.

En tt cas bravo.

10 October 2005, 02:32 PM
excellent work on that background!

10 October 2005, 03:48 PM

That will add some great depth to the scene, nice work on the displacement map..

10 October 2005, 04:10 PM
The city works ...
My question is if the resolution is really high, what about the city?
I mean we need to post the final image in a resolution near 4000X3000 in 300dpi... will the city look so right, even if it will be far behind?

10 October 2005, 04:26 PM
Thanks guys for your comments.
I'm gonna try to make my picture more understandable, but hum I still don't know how  .
Concerning the city at high rez, Its maps rez is 2000*2000 so I hope it will do the job .

10 October 2005, 08:39 AM
Wow Excellent envaironment....
You are Great artist Hope to see the other stages!

10 October 2005, 08:44 AM
Hi Oliver

I´m just visiting to take a look at your last update again ;)
Realy great idea with the city... very inspiring!

Wait to see more!
Cheers  Alex

10 October 2005, 10:05 AM
Magnifique tout ca...

Well I like alot the design, the modeling and the style but the idea  attacking elephats in the sky... what kind of drugs do you use? :D

Anyway great work

10 October 2005, 04:34 PM (

I've tweaked the lighting to work whith the whole scene. I think it's the finale lighting. Actually, my final picture will not be really different from this one. Hope ou'll like it!

10 October 2005, 05:20 PM
Hey there.
As a crit the ony thing I think is missing is the trees on the floating rock islands.
Or are you going to put cities there?

I preferred it without the shooting. It's less cruel if the ellies just fall?
But now it makes me think of those classic arcade games,
when you have the fighter ship and shoot just about anything.

I love the warm colours, the yellows oranges and red streaks I think work really nicely.
Also the blues and the pink make a bit of simultaneous contrast?
Actually the red streaking flags make the spaceship for me.
You could try get some blues behind the flags it could look really great?

So the moral of the story must be?
Don't let an old suicide elephant from outer space fall on your head?

10 October 2005, 02:54 AM
Dang now that truly is spectacular! I think for lighting you could really use some specular/rim on the left side of your ship, since that's where the light source seems toi be coming from. Also I find the foreground ellie's right side to be a tad too dark.

Hope I helped!
Cheers man

10 October 2005, 02:57 AM
This is really turning out to be a WEIRD scene! But I must admit that it is spectacular. I would be quite amazed if I saw elephants levitating! Beautiful scene so far. Not sure I know how to give you any critiques at this point...

10 October 2005, 01:37 PM
This use of color is really great.
For the last update I would just say that the ripple are a little too strong/present to my mind. It hide a alittle the beautiful city you made and would be readable in a less amplitude.
:applause: for this picture.

10 October 2005, 10:03 PM
But what is the emotive and story elements. I don't get it, but it's cool..

10 October 2005, 11:02 PM
So the elephants are falling off the "island" and threatening the city? Looks completely awesome. Having trouble figuring out whats goin on though.

10 October 2005, 11:53 PM
Very unusual scene you have, I must admit.

10 October 2005, 12:32 PM (

Hi there,
I agree that the story was not really clear with the previous pictures. I also understand that killing innocent elephants can shock people. So here is the new story: " The attack of the space elephants". :)

10 October 2005, 12:43 PM

Cheers Alex

10 October 2005, 12:53 PM
These creatures feed on every living stuffs and are colonizing the whole galaxy.
They are attacking one of the last human city. Its shield is collapsing. This ship is the last of its fleet and also the last hope for people living here...

I'll add few more elephants in the background and maybe also add a planet in the sky.

10 October 2005, 03:31 PM
This makes more sense. Good update.

10 October 2005, 03:42 PM
This looks really good but I feel that the molten lazer blast hitting the elephant looks too stagnant. It almost seems like they are connected...make it look like its giving some force where its hitting the elephant and have parts of the blast ricocheting off of him ..maybe where you have the molten cracks in the rock have a nice firey volume effect coming out.

10 October 2005, 06:19 PM
I don't know if it really matters much, but one of the first things I noticed about this composition is the fact the the ship has its thrusters on full blast and its about 10 feet away from a very much intact elephant. If he is the last ship in the fleet he wont be for long. He might as well not waste his ammo and just spear the elephant with his ship. I'm not detracting from the fantastic work you've done here, its just something I noticed.

Very beautiful scene.

10 October 2005, 06:28 PM
Nice change !

10 October 2005, 06:38 PM
Oh nooooo, Olivier Ponsonnet is here in the competition, poor humans, heheheheehheh.

Interesting and Dalian image.

Good luck

10 October 2005, 07:13 PM
Interesting concept... very nice lighting. keep it up!

10 October 2005, 07:43 PM
Somebody just broke their box!

An excellent design choice Olivier...

I hope you'll eventually light the ship so we can see the details you crafted a little better...
Rock on:buttrock:

Big Man
10 October 2005, 08:40 PM
Gotta say this picture stirs my emotions, its really good. And it matches the brief for being Spectacular, well. The ship and elephant could do with being further apart though - like some of the other guys mentioned - or turn the thrusters off so it would be a 'show down'.

10 October 2005, 06:03 AM
Very interesting new concept.Your scene is looking cool .Want to see how this evolves.

10 October 2005, 06:08 AM
I like the new orientation of your story... very good Olivier

10 October 2005, 07:04 AM
I didn't sleep last night becouse of this monsta-elephant. ... keep it up ;)

10 October 2005, 07:25 AM
Really cool change, like that concept, plus your lightning and colors are still so great.

Greatt man :applause:

10 October 2005, 10:34 AM
Falling evil Elephants . Amazing. Perhaps, some of your synapses are a little bit twisted  . And I really love that.

Your work divides the opinions of the audience pretty much. And I think that should well made art do. All in all a wonderful work. Can’t wait for the final shot.

But I have some critics (was hard to find ;) ): The ripples on the lower right part of the image is a little bit too strong. They’ve kept my whole attention when I saw your image for the first time.

You've got my first reply in this forum  .

10 October 2005, 06:50 PM (

Thanks for your comments :)
I modified little things in the background, changed the lighting of the foreground, and detailed the elephant. I also changed the different the blast/fire stuff. Maybe the right flag of the ship is too strong... Anyway here it is :)

10 October 2005, 07:26 PM
Ya just love pink dont ya ;)

I really like the colors here.
The lighting is pretty good now. I like the ship alot, I also like the elephant but those tentacles comming out of his body are a bit too wierd
I like the high saturation on this image but I think the top right (the backround) is a bit too saturated allready.
dont know if u plan to fill it more or not, but I think the backround is a bit too empty now.

10 October 2005, 08:48 PM
Great job here! Now idea is really better and more understandable!!! Flag at ship is stylish!!! I like it!

10 October 2005, 07:33 PM
Flags next to reactive by jet look not very. But in other respects - greatly it was pleased.

10 October 2005, 03:44 AM
A picture full of originality and very pleasant... what ask more ?

10 October 2005, 04:02 AM
Woa, I just now noticed the underwater city. I think you should make the water more transparent so that the viewer can see the city easier. I completely missed it for the first 40 seconds of looking at the picture. Great scene so far! Not sure I like the growths on the elephant legs/tentacles though.

10 October 2005, 07:33 AM
This is fantastic.I like every thing about this render.Great work.

10 October 2005, 09:53 AM
reiv, I have just one thing to say... man... you're crazy. :)

Well, I've got another thing to say, those ripples on the water don't quite fit on the scale of your scene, they seem kind of strange, I guess.
I also think that you could have some clouds from which the space elephants would come out.

My friend, keep your great work.

10 October 2005, 10:19 AM
hm, as I understood those are not water-ripples, but ripples on the shield that is securing the planet-surface of the attack from outer space-elefants.

a suggestion from my side, what about having a elefant-tentacle grab the ship, could make the scene more dramatic, since the ship is threatened as well and provide an explanation why this ship is not shooting from safe distance and upon everything provide a tag to jules vernes nautilus.

fantastic work however, my fav. so far.

10 October 2005, 11:58 AM
Good updates Olivier. Is really better now. Much more dinamic.

Just a suggestion is to add a spaceship in the tentacles of the elephant in the background.

And a details you could improve more, is the city under the force field ... to be sincerly I didn´t see the city until see the wips in the previous pages .... hehehe
Maybe you could make various citys under a various force fields in all extension of the planet and not a only one force fields in all planet ... like in Final Fantasy movie ... :)

10 October 2005, 11:37 PM
Yop can' t really see the city. Even when JR BRAZ was talking about it I still coulnd't find it... I found it when I looked at your WIP.

I really like the color, the design of the spaceship, and the elephant look really good.
The way you've done his legs are great. It could have been easily messed up but you've done it perfectly:thumbsup:

Your pic reminds me one of the picture you can find in the Lama Blanc (comics from Bess and Jodorowsky) when the Lama Blanc is confronting a giant flying octopuss. The mood of the pic is really purple pinky as well in this pic.

Anyway your illustration look really nice. I love the idea of this elephant :buttrock:and the way you design it .

10 October 2005, 11:45 PM
It's looking loads better for sure. However, as well modelled and as nice as it is, does this image really need that ship...?

If you lose it (or perhaps move it more into the background) you've still got something spectacular but the balance of the image would be so much better. Just food for thought. :)

Either way, great work.

10 October 2005, 08:19 PM (

Thanks for your comments guys, It really helps me a lot.

Now the elephant's taking the ship, this explains why they are so close. I've also worked on the background, adding details here and there.

Thanks again for your advices,

10 October 2005, 08:54 PM
Hey olivier, your work here is damn good ! I love the color scheme and the dynamic of the scene, long time hadn't seen your wipand i'm impressed to see how it evolved !

Keep it up the excellent work man !

10 October 2005, 09:25 PM
Fantastic work!
I like the dynamics! Main characters are looking good now. Design of the ship is very original and it reminds me epic tales. I think the background needs more details (but not small stuff like birds and other). Maybe some more clouds on the sky and something instead of these planets.
But anyway, this is really spectacular work
Good luck!

11 November 2005, 12:38 AM
Really nice image. I really like the ship concept. Good luck

11 November 2005, 10:38 AM
Wow. That's really better now.
Great idea to play with the tentacules. Impressive like such a little modification make a so big improvement.

11 November 2005, 10:50 AM
Nice update dude.I like your work, looking forward to more updates.

11 November 2005, 11:58 AM
great as always in your works olivier. It reminds my in some extent on Salvador dali's "elephants" with their long legs :D
