Dont quote me on this, but i think december 3rd.

Okay, I think I've come up with my idea for the picture - theres still something about it that doesn't quite ring true in my head, so if you think of something thats missing or wrong with it, please tell me! The way I work with ideas stemming from a single word is just to write and write until it forms, it's long, but I'll post all the crap I scrawled over a page in my notebook:

"What is spectacular? It could refer to an incredible event, almost intangible - or something done so well, with such skill.

Synonymous with incredible, amazing, wondrous - note all these things do not have to be "good" per say - can be horribly spectacular.

I like the idea of horribly spectacular - I've been wanting to draw something wonderfully dark for ages. I think just one main focus in the picture...a human...a woman.

Spectacular Love? Spectacular makes me think of "epic" for some reason...epic battle?

So far two things stand out to me: "Horribly spectacular" and "life".

Life...makes me think of delicate balances. Once life is gone it cannot be recreated. Suicide. Why would you want to give up something so "spectacular"? Insanity/depression. so many mistakes you can't reverse, rather die than something else happen.

I'm thinking of the character as a beautiful, delicate woman, perched on the edge of a cliff with a sheer drop. The view is facing down towards the drop. The woman is turning to look back. Her face is covered in blood, the clothing ripped. The wind is picking up her hair.

The land is barren and the sky is dark brown/green. Explosions etc. are taking place in the background. Other people in the background are throwing themselves off the cliff."

So thats the basic idea. Heres the bit I love - colours. It's great being synesthesic...'kay so I've got browns and greens for all of the environment, touches of gold - all very murky. The girl is warmer browns, reds, oranges and gold.

welcome to the challenge, I hope you get your computer soon, Elsie

hmm..dunno about suicide being spectacular ...

09-12-2005, 09:13 AM
Thanks Squibbit...Oops I think I maybe phrased the whole thing a bit badly? It wasn't meant to be about suicide, more...I dunno, finding it very hard to phrase...the balance between life and death? And that there was some "horribly spectacular" event happening to drive everyone to teeter on the edge of existence? Aw hell, guess I'm just twisted. Mweh he he.

P.S. Got myself a Boxx 5100 on order. Don't have the insurance money yet, but they Boxx guys have told me I won't need to pay anything until it reaches the UK. Heres hoping the insurance people don't screw me over now...

Look! An actual picture! The products of a doodle gone wild late last night. Sorry about the bad scan.

Reminded me precisely why I never do lineart, just plough straight ahead with the, bear with me. I decided she's not going to be about to jump, shes gonna be going down fighting ;).

The clashes of Japanese and Chinese dress are annoying me as an asiaphile, but I doubt anyone else would really notice?

No references here (like I said, doodle gone wild) so any anatomy corrections would be appreciated. I wanted to make her curvy but still delicate. That sleeve is annoying the hell out of me too. ARRRRGHH I CANT DO LINEART I WANT MY COMPUTER NYARRRGH *stomp stomp stomp*

Her right leg seems short compared to her thigh, and her foot seems (right) seems a tad off, might be the big toe. But a very nice drawing good pose too.

10-10-2005, 09:37 AM (

Added a little colour to it because I was bored heh - thanks for the heads up on the leg thing, are we talking about her right or the right of the picture? I'll be down visiting my parents next week so hopefully I can use a digicam to correct the pose. Ugh, can't wait to paint over the whole thing in photoshop heh. Ordered my new Intuos3 today so I can use it at my parents in England...and I'll order my computer while I'm down there so that it'll be delivered the day I get back! Yay! I'm finally going to have a computer again! *hugs everyone* Squee!

(I don't know why I coloured the decorations bright blue, they're actually going to be pink). The dress is going to be a silvery satin with dark grey trim. Not sure about the lighting yet.

10-10-2005, 12:12 PM
I meant her right leg, just a tad. Shame to bloody up such a lovely lady... ; )

11-07-2005, 08:43 AM
mmmh... I'm very sad... remain only one month... and no update here... I just hope you can continue your promising project... and especially, to finish it... best wishes Ailsa...

11-07-2005, 08:51 AM
Ah Lemog, you beat me to it! I've been doing some light work on it lately heh, was just about to update the thread today, thought it was all dead, forgotten and lonely like :bounce: you give me that little push to do something hehe so stay tuned and I'll have something later today :)

11-07-2005, 08:54 AM
I've just take a look on your thread many many days ago... and I remember to see here nothing new... I'm just asking about it...

...and good news... update comes... really glad to hear that... I'm very impatient then... :bounce:

Here we go, some rough sketchyness of this which I haven't gone any further on yet - eek, freaked me out that we have less than a month left. I have commissions to do >_< and I want to sit here and work on my entry now!

Flipped the canvas as I do every hour or so, not sure if it looks better this way...big perpective problems, my major weak point as an artist. If I stick with this viewpoint, the cliffs at the back will be much higher, with lots of explosions and stuff going on there.

Also on the fine advice of Sir Squibs I've decided to add a big ol' saber tooth tiger in there, change the iffy concept a little - thinking something along the lines of one day the animals all turn against the humans (probably would have been more fitting to the Master and Servant contest but....bah!).

The tiger will go (from this view) in line with the curve on the cliff, circling her, ready to pounce, was gonna be drawing a subtle line in the dirt as her foots sliding towards the edge there - wanted to catch the exact moment between anything that could happen.

Big hugs for Urgaffel, Queenie and Squibs for the lovely paintovers and wonderful advice - worried that it doesn't look "spectacular" enough - can't figure out how to post extra images and update at the same time, so I will post a few alternative viewpoints provided by squibbit momentarily...

Hoping I've started to correct the anatomy flaws - lengthened the leg a tad as you suggested jose :) and now I also gots some good corrections from peter they should probably be the next thing I do...nyargh! I just wanna get to the detailin :bounce:

11-07-2005, 09:37 AM

^^ Some alternative viewpoints by squib that hopefully give the pic a more dynamic feel - any advice and preferences would be appreciated :).

Er, "Disclaimer" by squib - it's not his fault, it's Linda's brushes. Blame it all on Linda :D

11-07-2005, 09:48 AM (

Argh! Updated the version with the weird do I delete it now...this is the sketch version I MEANT to upload. Gawd am I useless today or what...

11-07-2005, 09:50 AM

I really like this pose... very interesting... but I can't imagine the both subject together... this tiger and your girl... maybe I don't understand well what you wrote (my english is very poor you know  )
I must wait the following steps then...

plz tell us that u havnt broke up! and ur going to finish it,arnt u?:deal:

Finallly got your computer back? If so, glad you did. Looks a bit diffucult to get this piece the way you describe it since the woman is facing the camera. I think most pieces are a bit difficult to have much interaction when the main character is facing the camera and the action is visibly infront of the character. A camera angle from the side or back may work better in this situation, but who knows, maybe you can pull it off perfectly with the current view and pose you have. Just my $.2. Hope to see more updates from you.

11-09-2005, 07:15 PM
so any more??? looking good... a lively concept... update!!!

Lemog: I'm pretty sure it must be my bad English rather than yours thats preventing the understanding here hah, thanks for all the support and helpful comments (incidentally thank you for the very nice thought out comment on my self portrait, was nice to see when I checked back after a while :))

Madlight_1988: Hehe, I haven't broke up? Like cracked up? Cos I think that happened to me a looong time ago :p. Unfortunately, after about twenty more hours work (not the fun or even creative kind either, the stressed out goddammit-nothings-going-right type) I've decided I'm not going to be doing anymore on this piece. I'm just much too stressed out right now with other things and I think at the moment I'd much rather just lay back and observe the talent :)

Ace: Yep, I did indeed get a new computer ^_^ some specs in my sig. It's huuuuge, honestly the biggest case I've ever seen, weighs more than I do. It's great to have one back but I'm so out of practise it's unreal. Think I shall just bury my head under a pile of tutorials for the next month or two.

W!L: Thanks for the nice comment :) it did spur me on to do some more work on it tonight but just nothings working heh.

Thank you everyone, I really appreciate every comment I get. Hopefully next time things will go a bit better!

Sorry to hear you are dropping out. I may not finish mines either. Don't worry about being out of practice, I find the best thing to do is just experiment rather then read a bunch of tutorials; you learn so much more taking chances, making mistakes, and getting messy (Ms. Frizzle, Magic School Bus:p ). Will look forward to you joining next time around.

11-10-2005, 02:05 PM
so is that it for this challenge for you? O well... i think it is a great idea to school yourself with tutorials ec.. something i need to pay more attention to.. purticularly ife drawing...

11-14-2005, 05:49 AM
Well... about your choice... one thing is sure, it was that's your choice... but even in the stress or in the rush... we must manage a little part dedicate to the pleasure, to take some rest with things we like... as this challenge... then, you can continue and finish it... not as a challenge... that give you lees pressure, but like a rest... to change your mind... that can works...

In any case... we doesn't forget the most important today... your birthday... :bounce:

well... happy birthday Ailsa

11-14-2005, 09:58 AM
Hehehe, "Super french nut" :applause: that's my Lemog hah *lotsa hugs for Lemog too* Thank you honey!

As for finishing the challenge for fun, think I'm gonna leave it for now (can't bear to look at it) but it might be something interesting to revive in a few months! Took James's advice and been experimenting like mad - I got a WIP thread coming soon :wip: with lotsa nakid chicks, so you'll all still have to endure my sketchy madness!

so you'll all still have to endure my sketchy madness!
I just keep the last sentence for today... sufficient to wait for more... and soon
