09-05-2005, 10:32 AM
Cheers guys! I dunno where I'm going with this one yet. I've got a Victorian/Edwardian flying machine/ballooning type vibe going round my head at the moment. Might get a chance to do some sketching today, but goodness... this one is three months! I can't wait to see stuff coming in... this is soooo exciting!

09-05-2005, 10:40 AM
Go get em girl :)

09-05-2005, 12:08 PM
Wooh, victorian setting + machinery + Poshspice = instant suscribing to this thread (well, I would have suscribed regardless of the subject, but this one, I already like :buttrock: )

09-05-2005, 12:18 PM
hiyaaa!!1nice to see u here!! and good luck mate!!:D

09-05-2005, 03:53 PM (

First doodle. Lots of bizarre flying machines, a bit Victoriany, dragony, steamy poweredy. Think I might try it in a balloon as well.

09-05-2005, 03:54 PM

With your lovely ladies and marvellous technique, this could be just splendid!!

09-05-2005, 04:04 PM
"steam powerdy"

Fred Dibnah wouldve been proud of your technical knowledge!

Looks intresting so far - Most of your pieces are very character orientated and sexy - this one is different. Im sure it will turn out ace though.

Ive got an idea for mine, but cant sketch anything yet - too busy!
Curse you and your relaxed attitude to work heheh :D

09-05-2005, 04:08 PM
Hey Aly,
Good start and good luck man!

Interesting concept. Good Luck!

09-05-2005, 04:58 PM
This is only a concept. Just me first... :) This isn't anything like a finished idea... That's what the concept part of this is about; just exercising the imagination. I might end up doing a purely character based thingy yet, but this was just an idea. Hopefully there'll be more... :)

I can't believe how quickly people have got images up this time! This is fab! Gonna have a browse...

09-05-2005, 05:16 PM
Fly Aly fly! lol! hahah and everyone is waitin' for em Poshspicegals... :bounce: :scream: :D bring em on!

09-05-2005, 09:31 PM (

Have fun Aly ..(subscribed)

09-06-2005, 12:11 PM
Hey Aly! Great to see you in this challenge, more chance for us all to bow and grovel at your artistic greatness! *grin* best of luck...

I have one question though with the edwardian girls sketch... what particular spectacular moment in history would this be? (I dont necessarily mean factual history, I mean why is the pre-stage bit so spectacular?). Just playing devil's advocate!

09-06-2005, 12:27 PM

You are quite right Sam, it's not spectacular enough... yet! This is just an idea, though. If I was to follow this one through the spectacular would come into play with the costumes and the presentation... er, I hope... It's the whole 'show' thing! Anyway, I doubt this is the one! Bleh....

09-06-2005, 04:22 PM
Welcome back, posh good luck to ya, holla!

09-06-2005, 04:36 PM (

Most of my doodles so far. As much as I'd like to do a whole troupe of Moulin Rouge showgirls getting ready to go on stage, I don't feel they are sufficiently spectacular as a stand alone idea. But I'm rather into the flying machines thingy anyway. As I said earlier, I'll try and develop the Edwardian angle a bit more...

09-06-2005, 04:38 PM
yeh the mid right one is great,u don't have to do the girls one, theres nothing spectaculer about half naked girls.

*did i just say that*

09-06-2005, 04:45 PM
u don't have to do the girls one, theres nothing spectaculer about half naked girls.

everything looks great dude, u can go with whatever

09-06-2005, 04:45 PM
Good luck

09-06-2005, 04:56 PM
Nice to see you in :) good luck!

09-06-2005, 04:58 PM
flying with the dragons is a nice idea to consider about it.

09-06-2005, 04:59 PM
Woooooooot! Cant wait to see what you come up with :D

09-06-2005, 05:13 PM
I love the balloon! The others are nice too...

09-06-2005, 05:15 PM
The 2 at the top right corner seem more interesting compositionally, my 2 cents, holla!

09-06-2005, 05:36 PM
Excellent work!! & great compose .

Your works are very good 'cause it can tell the story in it.

09-06-2005, 05:50 PM
Love the concepts so far. Good luck in the challenge!

09-06-2005, 05:50 PM
this is just 2-3 days from start ! but your concept seem to be perfect , I like the first one , flying machine and balloon! can't imagine what left for you to do in next 3 month:thumbsup::thumbsup:

09-06-2005, 05:52 PM
interesting sketch!
love it.:bounce:

09-06-2005, 06:09 PM
Nice concepts! I like the showgirl on the airplane! LOL the girls behind the curtain are good too, i like how you get a sense of what kind of people they are by their body language.

09-06-2005, 06:45 PM
Cool, I see you might be going for the Moulin Rouge approach although the baloon and airship idea is very interesting too. I really like the doodle and the way you're blocking out various compositions for the final piece. Keep it up and Good Luck!

09-06-2005, 06:47 PM
I like the dressing room idea, its the least 'spectacular' but probably the one you could pull off the best, and win the most fans with those gratuitous lady bits you do oh so well!
If youre going with the flying machine idea, i like the balloon one, though balloons are hardly exhilirating - it would probably need a spectacular view to make it, well, spectacular. The wing walker is also a good idea, but you are obviously limited to the poses the girl can assume.
How about a lady in a retro flight suit looking out of the observation platform on the top of a massive zeppelin in the middle of a battle/ nice sunset. That would be pretty spectacular, if a little similar to your frances drake concept. Think of the scene where sheeta and pazu spot goliath in laputa: castle in the sky. Sorry if you have no idea what im on about...

I like the one with the showgirls behind the curtain the most so far, but its always great to see the different approaches you could take.

Keep it up matey

09-06-2005, 07:02 PM
Thanks for all the crits guys. I'm sorry I haven't been responded personally to all of them; I'm just rude! :)

I know exactly what you are tallking about Andy! 'Laputa' is one of my favourite movies. In fact anything by Miyazaki. I still haven't seen 'Howls Moving Castle' yet, and can't wait to do so. And I have thought about the airship and observation deck idea (believe it or not), but it is very close to that other pic I did! But I might have a doodle... Girls, airships, planes... back at Mr Freud again!

I must admit to having a slight problem with the word spectacular. It is very subjective. What one person see's as spectacular, another could see as very normal. The idea of a performance to me is spectacular, but it always seems that it comes down to something big! Yet a centipede doing a handstand would be pretty spectacular, but pretty small! I'm not making much sense... I'm very tired... bleh!

Anyhow, this is a long challenge, and I'm going to keep drawing ideas for the moment...

09-06-2005, 07:15 PM
yay, ladys

nice concepts ya got there

09-06-2005, 07:24 PM
Lookit you go! Image ups already and everything! Well, I'm in too. Look forward to your work, your insight, and a general all around good time. :)

09-06-2005, 07:39 PM
Hey, Aly, good to see you back again. Looking forward to seeing another spectacular entry. ;)

Good luck!

09-06-2005, 08:13 PM
Lovely sketches! you rocking loud, and full of ideas:D all of them great.

09-06-2005, 08:18 PM
good to see you around! :bounce:

happy painting and good luck!

09-06-2005, 09:10 PM
I like the balloon scene the best. keep on going.

09-06-2005, 09:57 PM
I Love You, Ali (posh)!

09-06-2005, 10:30 PM
Its all good, people ignore me all the time here @ cgtalk, So yo;u won't be the first person to do so, anyways good luck. I am still pushing the 2 right corner images though, I want to how well you can pull off those angles, especially the ballon one, holla!

09-06-2005, 10:38 PM (

Changed one of the roughs a bit. I'm not sure of this angle, so will have another try later, as right now I'm full of head-cold and my nose looks like a tomato! :)

I promise I'll reply in more detail tomorrow! Night night! Zzzzz...

Quick edit: Think I'll knock this one on the head. It's too like another pic I did... flying machines, bright sunlight, girl with intense expression... oh well, back to the drawing board!

09-06-2005, 10:41 PM
Get a frogs eye view from the bottom, that would be cool!

09-06-2005, 10:44 PM
Cool page of sketches.
The flying machine concept is cool, but it would bestronger, I think, if you try to simulate a fish eye lense, in order to create the impression that the machine is going very near to the spectator, or even straight to him ! it would add some drama.
Just an idea...
Good luck

09-07-2005, 12:30 AM
i love the lighting! *me wants a flyin dragon ship too!*

good luck! :bounce:

09-07-2005, 02:23 AM
hie posh~those concept sketches are looking real good~love especially the balloon piece and the current one.keep playing around with them till u are satisfied:)i'll drop in again

09-07-2005, 07:39 AM
Hey poshposh! I love the 'Jules Verne' feel to this latest sketch. And it's nothing like the 'other pic' that you seem to think is too similar!!

The dragon head is cool too... particularly because it's not a dragon, but a figurehead for her flying machine.

I think there's loadsa legs in the flying machines idea... don't give up yet... unless you've got something even more snazzy up your sleeve!?

09-07-2005, 07:54 AM
Thanks for stopping by peeps! I've still got a miserable cold, but at least managed a bit of sleep... sniff...

Noob - What are you like? Ha ha!

Squib - Ta matey! But I still don't know what I'm doing yet...

Tolga - Thankyou! You too!

M@ - Thanks for the welcome. :)

NinjaASSN - Hi Blaz. I quite like the dragony flying girl thing too, but I keep thinking I've done stuff like this before. I guess it depends on how you do it I 'spose.

fooxoo - Hi Edite! Thanks!

FrozZT - I might come back to the balloon thing...

Beelow - Yeah, the girl on the wing is an interesting composition, but I'm not sure about it! I like all that flying machine stuff - 'The Great Waldo Pepper' and movies like that.

SINAD - Cheers! I do try and tell a bit of a story, and sometimes succeed! ;)

AirbORn - Thanks Marek!

monsitj - Plenty to do believe me! I'm still playing... Thankyou!

xric7 - Thankyou Thitipon!

CodeNothing - That's what I'm trying for! He he!

wraithdt - I love the Moulin Rouge angle, and still might try some more ideas. It's an excuse to draw girls anyway... like I need one...

Andy H - Like I say, I like the airship thing, but I'll have to think carefully about that one... Thanks for your support.

Dervish - Heh! Some anyway...

SavageCreature - Thankyou Clint! :)

Walrus - Hi Mike! Fab to see you here too!

renderwhite - Thankyou Gonçalo!

dunkelgold - And good to see you Benita!

pushav - Cheers!

Xia - :p

beelow - Holla!

Arctis - Good call. If I go with this one, and I do kind of like it, I will redo the angle for more drama, as this Challenge is all about a degree of drama!

dunkelgold - I've had a word with a mate who makes magic flying dragon planes, and yous is the first name on the list after mine!

sh@ke - thankyou Michael!

And Duddlebug! Bless ya! I haven't given up on it, but am currently re-thinking it... a little bit anyway... :)

Thanks guys. I shall keep updating my replies now, and we're all here for a big ride! Three months! It's going to be nearly Christmas when this is over! :)

09-07-2005, 08:20 AM
Blimey! Now THATS commitment! A personalised reply for each poster!
Keep that up, and your keyboard will burst into flames once youre on the 40th page!

Mister Duddle is beating your replies by 2 posts, but youre beating him on views! Its neck and neck!

I wonder where linda is with her potentially soul crushingly brilliant entry?

Linda's a judge Andy...

09-07-2005, 12:10 PM
Hello Aly! here we go again! very nice start:thumbsup:

Good luck!

09-07-2005, 04:15 PM
What a great looking sketch so far... I especially like the light rays.

09-07-2005, 04:20 PM
Your work is always on the top of my list. I will check this one out every chance I get. Good Luck

09-07-2005, 06:10 PM
You're artistic talent terrifies me. I quickly looked yesterday to see if you had entered (without search) and didn't see your thread. I did a secret dance of joy and thought "I'm ahead of Aly, I'm ahead of Aly!"

Then I saw your post on my thread....

I like the piece you have going, even though you think it's too close to some of your other work. I did really liked the perspective in your last cg challenge piece. Maybe if you could bring that in to whatever you do. I know it's early, but I'm already excited for your finished piece.

09-07-2005, 06:14 PM
Man, I wish linda joined this contest, I like competing against her, she should quit being a judge and join the contest!

09-07-2005, 06:22 PM
Aly, I withdraw any previous mention of your entry not being spectacular! Good lord, do I. If you dont win something this time round darn it, I shall cause a ruckus! Really loving the dragonship sketch, very Jules Verne as has been said. Girls costumes and dragons! Hurrah for poshspice!

09-07-2005, 06:34 PM
looking good spice:thumbsup: good luck on this one... m stl pondering f i hv time to join.

09-07-2005, 08:43 PM
Oooh, more feedback!

Fiolka Alexandre - Heh heh! Thanks! Once more unto the breach etc...

botched - Yeah, I seem to have a thing for light rays... and airships, and heroic women etc etc etc! :)

11thdoor - Thankyou Kyle!

dougbot - Wow! I don't know what to say... And yes, it is too similar I think, but as we've got so long, I'll get a few of the cliches I tend to lapse into when doing personal stuff out of the way first! I'll do another version of this one with a play on the perspective a bit more as well. No-one dressed as a Kitty this time though...

beelow - Linda isn't here physically, but I feel her very presence with every mark or brushstroke and typed letter... ever watching... omni-present! Haha! I'll be honest, although she's not competing I'm glad she's on the jury. It's about time we had some women judging too! :)

Zephyri - Hiya Sam! Yeah... Cheers m'dear! I might do an Edwardian Car chase, a la 'The Great Race' or 'Monte Carlo or Bust'.

arkinet - You gotta join in! But there's plenty of time to make up your mind.

09-07-2005, 09:02 PM
i disagree,women can't judge,she'll say one thing and mean the other....damn u woman,damn u!!!

*lindas cat takes a bite outta noobs balls* AARRRRGGHH!

ahem.joke lol.

Great work posh, can't wait to see this develop,u have so many fans,i might have to kill them.

09-07-2005, 09:03 PM
double posted ness.

09-07-2005, 09:44 PM
I ain't sayin thats bad, I like watching her work, which is great!

09-07-2005, 09:47 PM
Ah, Victorian sci-fi flying machines. I was just looking at some turn-of-the-last-century sci-fi art myself - wonderful stuff. All the women wore bustles and the guys had top hats and canes. Look forward to seeing more of your stuff, all good so far.

09-07-2005, 09:48 PM
I ain't sayin thats bad, I like watching her work, which is great!

let the woman judge lol,she probably stressed trying to impress everyone anyway hehe, its her breaktime.

posh,get well soon,just read u had a cold.

09-07-2005, 10:06 PM
Jumping on board the bandwagon before it's too late. I'm a big fan of your work Aly and I'm sure you'll pull out a truly spectacular piece.

Although the dragon ship concept may be similar to your Lady Frances Drake piece, I really like it and would like to see how you could further work on it, perhaps using, as suggested, a more dramatic camera angle. However, the prospect of an Edwardian car chase à la Aly Fell sounds like the epitome of the spectacular.

Anyway, I'm confident in your abilities. Just stopping by to give a few words of encouragement. This is one thread I am most definitely subscribing to.

09-07-2005, 11:11 PM
wooooW!!!this looks awsome!!! as expected ...cheers!!:applause:

09-08-2005, 06:41 AM
Hi Aly and good luck. I'm really curious as to what hot babe you'll present to us this time, especially with a theme like this. Love your work!

09-08-2005, 08:15 AM (

A different angle, but I don't think it's right yet, so back to the drawing board. You can tell I got bored halfway through! :) Car chase next...

09-08-2005, 08:22 AM
This looks fantastic, Aly!!

I like the new 'action' aspect! The guns'n'stuff!! And the perspective works well... although you could possibly push the foreshortening further on the dragon..?

And there's even more girls! An they're all wearing leather! Yippeee!

09-08-2005, 08:26 AM
Holy crud Posh, your friggin' sketches are better than my finished pieces. I like that last one a lot. You ever think of doing a comic? Any way, keep it up.

09-08-2005, 08:28 AM
Good starting MAN. There will BE a competition:buttrock:

09-08-2005, 08:48 AM
oh wow!! looks great!!

09-08-2005, 08:49 AM
NOOB - Heh! Ta NOOB! Colds going, but I sneezed so hard last night I put my back out! Doh!

beelow - Cool Man!

BaronImpossible - I love all that Jules Verne/HGWells stuff. Mmmm... bustles...

LoB - I know... I was thinking it was too similar, but we'll see. I want to work some more ideas out first before I settle... Thankyou!

callisto - Thanks... I'm loving your horsemen of the Apocalypse idea.

andreasrocha - Good to see you, in a kind of not actually seeing you kind of way...

Jonny - Yeah! The foreshortening could do with some work. :)

Dougbot - Cheers maytee! I think they look like a spider ran across a paintbox and then met with a nasty accident on my monitor... :)

Nachev - Thanks! :)

Cheers chaps and chapesses.

09-08-2005, 08:57 AM
Great development of the idea. Like your building the whole world and background in your sketches. Loved your Master/Servant piece, it was my favorite. Looking forward to seeing how this one comes out!!

09-08-2005, 09:04 AM
This one is really great. Nice concept. MAybe the 1st plane could be less rotate (more facing the camera) to have a more impressive perspective.
Anyway I like hte subject, and as I know your work, I hope you'll choose this sketch cause it(s gonna be great.

09-08-2005, 01:23 PM
Hi poshspice.
great sketches as usual.

The current sketch has a lot of action and dynamic in the foreground. Maybe you could increase the spectacular impression by showing some more space/background. There you could place something like a big mother-ship or a flying station. In addition with some dramatic sunlight coming partly through haze and clouds. Just some thougts.

09-08-2005, 01:36 PM
Hi! :)

Sexy ladies /w Attitude quaranteed again :D Nice concept and coming together nicely. I agree with fahrija about maybe opening up the scene a bit...otherwise I cannot say anything else atm. :> Best of luck.

09-08-2005, 01:58 PM
wow, i love the lightning and these dragon plains :). it reminds me of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow somehow.

Keep it up :)

09-08-2005, 03:17 PM
Great Colours !!
I like the last sketch even if you think it is not the right ! ;)

09-08-2005, 03:35 PM
Hey, Aly! Looking good!

One comment about clipping: Nearly every flying object you have in your scene right now is clipped by the border in some fashion. It makes for a kind of claustrophobic shot... Might be what you intended, but with all these planes darting around high in the sky, you might want to consider opening up the image a bit. It's great to have the foreground ship so close that it doesn't fit into the frame, but maybe the others could be smaller... Or the picture could be wider.

Also, the more evidence of tons of other ships - so that it's a full-out war, not just a skirmish between 5 or 6 vessels - the more spectacular it will be. (imho.)

Good luck!

09-08-2005, 03:38 PM
Hey Aly! Wow, the piece looks great! Good start to what looks like an awesome competition! I'm eager to see how this will unfold :)

09-08-2005, 03:43 PM
wow!cool concept and great sketch.
can't wait for the next.good luck.

09-08-2005, 03:45 PM
It's truly spectacular that such a thing can fly :p

09-08-2005, 04:05 PM
WOW! I love how this is turning out, very spectacular indeed. I can't wait to see more!

Nice work ;)

09-08-2005, 04:50 PM
Oh, I love this concept! Always facinated by air-gunfights. Don't forget the smoketrails! hehe.. Keep it up!

09-08-2005, 04:56 PM
Naabie - Thanks!

Feeesh - Ta good sir! :)

authentic - Still working on the angles and stuff, I just wanted to get the idea down :)

Fahrija - You're right, I think the final one, if I go with this, will be broader and more spectaclier!

ElFuego - Thankyou!

Llynna - I know what you mean, but I was thinking more Laputa, than SkyCaptain. Cheers.

The Witch - Thanks.... going to try and co-ordinate my colours better this time.

Walrus - Mike, I do agree! And a mothership like Fahrija suggested would be cool!

Evil Gerbil - Thanks for stopping by Mr Chan! :)

xric7 - Cheers Thitipon.

CocoKNight - Ha ha! Too right! Better make the wings bigger.... ;)

enialadam - Thanks!

am7 - I wont! Ta!

Right now I'm working on the costume/uniform design for the main girl... which is fun! ;) And next I'll design the aeroplanes so they are a bit more thought out and flyabubble.

09-08-2005, 05:45 PM
You go POSH! Bang Bang!

09-08-2005, 06:23 PM
That last sketch is excellent. Starting to become more spectacular, with the added action and such. Still looking forward to that car chase, though. Still, if you choose to go with this concept, I agree with Fahrija's ideas.

09-08-2005, 06:26 PM
wow that great!!
I realy won to see when it finish!! cheer!!

09-09-2005, 08:23 AM
hey Posh... back to that foreshortening my dear chap.

I remember my time in France in 1916 and seem to remember that our 'heavy' planes often had a seat out front for our pilots or front gunners. Only on the large fellows, you understand. I mean the large planes, of course, and not the large pilots or gunners. We were as thin as rakes with the slop we were served by the kitchen. I often thought back to a splendid sunday roast served up by mummy on the terrace. And i don't think we had any of these leather clad young ladies you seem so fond of. We left the girls back home in England to entertain themselves. They'd have caused all sorts of ruptions in the officers' mess. Although, i'd say these feisty young fillies would've given the hun a run for his money.

So, to get back to the point, how about a young lady out front so we can see her rosy cheeks..?

And how about a lot more sky? You can't spot the enemy if you can't see sky, my dear chap!

Oh dear, is it that time already? Nanny will be waiting for me in the bathroom. Must go....

09-09-2005, 09:41 AM
wow!! this looks impressive!!!way to goooooo!!!:applause: :applause:

09-09-2005, 09:49 AM
Man that compo is hot getting it eh, great stuff so far, but I like to see the more of the background, because everything looks too compact. Give your compo some air, like some baggie jeans!

09-09-2005, 10:43 AM
Last compo is getting more and more spectacular as i am watching it...:bounce: .

I don't know if u get closer to them what will do to the balance of image (u know better)...but knowing your style in face drawing ...i really would love to see them a bit closer...but then again u can ignore this tiny bubble talk....Cool concept ...i would stick to that.

09-09-2005, 11:07 AM
just a quick "waaaa, great".. I'll take some more time for a better critique when I'll have time. Till then, keep up the good work! :)

09-09-2005, 12:33 PM
Really great image!!!Although I do agree with Duddles to open up more your image,more sky,more planes,more BOOMS,etc,etc.And a bit with NINJA,more women:D

09-09-2005, 01:28 PM
that looks pretety cool posh.. CHOCKS AWAY OLD BOY!

09-09-2005, 01:58 PM
nice. I'd go for forced perspective (assuming I could do it lol) so that camera would appear very close to ships. It would add a lot of drama to this. Go to and see Scott Robertson's drawings, he has some really nice forced perspective vehicles there that has this "on your face" -feel to them.

09-09-2005, 02:59 PM
Hi Aly, I like this adventure scene! looks so great!

09-09-2005, 03:02 PM
*withers in envy* darn it Aly, love the latest composition, and judging by that new avatar, the girls will be nothing short of spectacular!

09-10-2005, 12:01 AM
Dude, I love the flying machine theme and your latest post is very dynamic. I agree with duddlebug that more sky would keep things from feeling a bit claustrophobic. Amazing designs though... great to see you bringin' back the famous 'poshspice ladies'. Always a treat!

Looking forward to seeing more, bro...

09-10-2005, 02:25 AM
More hot women. More hot women. Lol. I just had to say that. Nice dynamic action scene.

I like the head that is on the plane.:)

09-10-2005, 09:53 AM
Good machines and good shot:thumbsup:

09-10-2005, 09:57 AM
hah, u changed angles! and i didn't notice from the thumbnail, haha

dude , u gotta have someone leaping from one of them flying machines
into another

not spectacular enough yet!

09-10-2005, 03:33 PM

Looking great so far! I think yours will be an excellent entry!!!

Cheers, :)

09-10-2005, 04:30 PM

I like the concept of your "futuristique delta plane", good work

09-11-2005, 09:10 AM
Cmon aly - where is that bloody update!?

I sense a significant update coming....

09-11-2005, 11:17 AM

09-11-2005, 12:56 PM
I'm glad to see u here aly .. good luck . and I hope to win this time . see u

09-11-2005, 07:18 PM
I meant this in the good way, it's has that look of 1920-1940
very original I think, comparing to all si-fi and ultra modern stuff
good luck man,

09-11-2005, 07:51 PM
this is a really cool idea and the sketch is look sweet keep it up

09-11-2005, 09:25 PM
I just had a look at that last sketch again, and it looks pretty darn muddy, colour wise...

Dimitris Liatsos - I'm thinking of a character in the foreground, as though in a gun turret looking down on the escaping aircraft. So there will be a figure closer to the viewer. Thanks.
NinjaASSN - Cheers Blaz.
Okmer - Don't worry, there'll be girls, but probably no Ninjas...
Wil - Thanks! :)
Ranath - Cheers... Scott Robertsons stuff is really nice. Thanks for the link. I'm not really up on drawing machinery, so I'm kind of interested to see what happens really.
Gus_Clifton - Thankyou Gus!
Zepyhri - Thankyou Sam... gonna change it again though...
artjunkie - Heh heh! I do draw guys as well!
pushav - Thankyou!
-tolga- Cheers! :)
Squibbit - Not spectacular enough yet... but that means it must be spectacular a bit! :)
Rebeccak - Thankyou very much!
Ducklator - I love you too! ;)
Kyena - Hello Tascha! :)
NOOB - You're stalking me eh! Right, I need an exclusion order... ;)
bao - Thankyou!
Xillion - Thankyou ever so much...
comaone - Thanks!
MDN67 - Ta, but it's not looking too realistic at the moment. :)
Andy H -
Korline - A gum commercial! Oooh, I'd like to see that!
abourabe - Good to see you join in!
ROWAN - Thankyou.

09-11-2005, 09:28 PM (

I sat down sniffing through a cold and decided to take a leaf out of Duddlebugs book and create a story to go with this idea. Basically, this is Flight Lieutenant Jane Cromwell (for now anyway - or is it Lady Frances Drake ;) ). In an alternative 1919 (still a Victorian style Empire), she has stumbled across a secret. A secret so horrifying she must escape with the proof of what she has discovered to goodness knows where (yet). However the Empire she once served so naively, has discovered her treachery, and gives chase to her small force, finally catching up with them when just in sight of sanctuary...

This is just a costume design really, not final character, and I've never been quite sure of Jodphurs as a fashion statement...! The rest is very rough layout ideas, but I'm not going to go with any of these I think. More drawing needed... I also need to do a proper design of the steam powered aircraft. I'm still not sure of this idea, but I suppose there is still plenty of time... Bleh...

09-11-2005, 09:36 PM
sweet stuff, that b/w pic is so cool, stamps n all

09-11-2005, 09:37 PM
I like, i like!
Superb costume design and i like the old photo effect. I guess your scanner was working after all!
Out of the 3 roughs on the left, i prefer the middle one. I like the first person perspective viewpoint - its very close to the action and dynamic, plus i can imagine you will work wonders with the sunlight and atmospherics.

Keep it up, and kick that cold's arse!
(is that why the lass on your avatar has a red nose?)

09-11-2005, 09:42 PM
Superb costume design and i like the old photo effect. I guess your scanner was working after all!
(is that why the lass on your avatar has a red nose?)
No it's still up the creek. I used a rust texture I'd made and de-saturated it as an overlay...

And yes, her nose is a bit pink! I imagined it quite cold up there in the big blue sky, but I often over-pink my noses... :)

09-11-2005, 09:50 PM
Great concepts. I suck too much to say something constructive. Keep it up. I wish you luck ;)

09-12-2005, 02:26 AM
Oh, keep the pants. Sure, Jodphurs are not always the right choice for leggings, but i think this is one of the very few situations where it works, so you might as well go with it. How many more chances will you ever have to use jodphurs in an illo?! :)

09-12-2005, 04:28 AM
looking good aly~love the sky captain feel character design, cool costume :thumbsup:keep it coming

09-12-2005, 05:05 AM
Cool stuff.
This is right up my alley.
I can't wait to see this happen.

09-12-2005, 05:27 AM
Yes!:scream: I am liking that costume design! I will drop by later since you said that you may not go those designs, I'll holla!

09-12-2005, 06:22 AM
thats realy cool mate . . . story sounds a bit like star wars a new hope with princess leah flying back with secret documents betraying the empire....

09-12-2005, 06:55 AM
That's a lovely lovely character design!

Are you gonna post the colour version for us all to see... cause i know there is one... :p

09-12-2005, 07:37 AM
Cool!! I like the 'concept sketch and playing a bit' Great work! This is really progressing well :D

09-12-2005, 07:45 AM
I am totally in love with that character sheet

09-12-2005, 08:23 AM

09-13-2005, 07:32 PM
Costume/ character design is incretible, love those little highlights on the material,
from the sketches, I think the middle one, looks awsome :applause:

09-13-2005, 10:35 PM
Aly, great work as always! The costume is awesome, I'm digging those huge pants. Good luck!

09-13-2005, 10:42 PM
While your character sheet is clearly second to none (posh - those aging effects on the righthand panel as well as the beautifully classic proportions - mwah) I'm waiting to see how you make a visually spectacular composition from the initial concept.... what's the story?...

and which panel of the story is going to be the most spectacular?

I am most grateful to see your WIPs - very educational and inspiring

09-14-2005, 01:09 AM
Looks great Aly, the character comp is awsome, and cute. Good luck.

09-14-2005, 06:50 AM
Gotta love your characters.. not only do they look good, but they also seem to have a lot of character.. and a very defined personality! :D

09-14-2005, 12:33 PM
great sketck. nice composition.looks very energetic.nice work so far!!!

09-14-2005, 12:42 PM
Any chance of an update before you go away on your hols? If not, have a good un!

09-14-2005, 01:49 PM
I should really update the thread with a proper layout, but it's been a bit hectic the last few days. I'm developing the characters a bit first. The girl in the last update, is going to have a companion, probably called Miki, and I've been drawing her. I guess I just want to get the characters down first... and the aircraft design.

Squibbit - Bless you matey!

Andy H - Thanks again!

Pawlack - Any kind of comment is helpful! Thankyou!

Walrus - Not too often I suppose, so yup! The jodphurs stay! :)

Sh@ke - Cheers!

KOryH - Glad to hear that! :)

Beelow - I'm still not sure where I'm going yet... I'm thinking of turning it into a car chase with Steampunk planes and Zeppelins... Ta!

Wil - Aaah! But this secret is more dark than that one...This secret whirrr....

Duddlebug - Thanks Jonny. I will post the colour one, but I'm doing the second character at the moment, and might put it up when I post them. I've still got to do the baddie as well!

enialadam - Thanks! :)

Kyena - Thankyou Tascha.

xric7 - Ta muchly!

NOOB! - Time is tricky right now, hence the lack of update. Rain... don't talk to me about RAIN! I live in the wettest part of Britain I think! Time to go away for a bit....

Calisto - Thanks Linda.

mannix8 - Oooh, thanks!

NinjaASSN - Hehheh! .... nope!

Korline - I love designing clothes. Fabric's great!

strych9ine - Hey oop Cody! I didn't know you were here... I'm moonlighting away from the Thunderdome! :D

Avatarist - You're right, I've got to get on with the final composition, but I want to get my designs tight first seeing as I have some time.

tAstyBITs - Thankyou.

JJNaas - I try to give them personality rather than just a pretty face, so thanks for getting that.

CG-AvangerD - Cheers!

Andy H - Ta! I'm trying to get Miki designed by tonight, but it might have to wait till I get back from BARCELONA on Sunday. Mmmmm Gaudi....

09-14-2005, 03:02 PM
what's whith you and noob complaining about the rain.. it rocks!!! I am posting letters in it every morning and i am the person who should complain about it most but you got to love that atmospehric weather... I love englands weather.

09-14-2005, 08:36 PM

The sepia portrait of the girl is lovely, so why not use it as a final render ? I guess it would be an interesting mix : history + spectacular ;)
Just an idea...

09-16-2005, 02:34 PM

by the way, I've been on your website, and I read in the news that you were a bit down with your art after M&S challenge : I must say it was a very surprising result, that I didn't (and still don't) understand.
Your entry was one of the best, full in the subject, and your effort to create a complete environnement around your characters was a true success. So keep the faith for that new challenge, man, because whatever the result is, there'll always be guys who recognize cool entries.

09-16-2005, 10:09 PM
Hi Ali,
Yep, award or not I'm keeping an eye on this.
Some more gorgeous ladies coming?
Pilot looks terrific great illustration skills.

Waiting for more :D

09-17-2005, 10:13 AM
Hi Posh, nice to see your process with so many pics. I just love your girlies and this character design is sweet!

09-18-2005, 08:59 PM
Hey enjoy your trip and hope you get some nice inspirational company there. can't wait to see your next update mate, luv your concept!

09-18-2005, 09:08 PM
Ok, Posh that should be interesting to see what you will do with that, can't wait to see that car scene that you are talkin' bout! I can only imagine what to expect out of that* imagining it* that would be awsome, good luck with it! Hurry and post some new stuff, holla!

09-19-2005, 09:58 PM
Wil - I like the rain really Wil, but I'd like it even better if on occasion I got to sit outside in the afternoon sun, sipping Sangria and nibbling tapas! :)

Arctis - Hi Pierre. She's just a character thingy really. Next I've got to do the bad guy Major Bartlett and one of his minions... Thanks for the encouragment! :)

Spin99 - Heh! Cheers!

p4b10 - Thanks Pablo!

the1st_angel - Hi Sacha! Yeah, I got a bit of inspiration... mainly at the bottom of a bottle of Cava! :)

beelow - I'll rough out the car one... thanks for your support!

09-19-2005, 10:00 PM (

Not much of an update really, I've just got back off hols! I'm still just playing with characters. This is Miki Sato (for the moment). She's Jane Cromwell's trusty Sergeant; always faithful. She'll be helping Jane escape from the clutches of the evil Major Bartlett... Next I'll get on with the main composition, and decide whether they are going to be escaping in a Supercharged Classic Bentley or an Eagle flying machine... decisions...

09-19-2005, 10:20 PM
You have some great charactere designs! Nice, you are going to do the Bentley's huh? That will be interesting to see!

09-19-2005, 11:21 PM
Wow! Fantastic character design! Very sexy! I love the tommy gun and the cigarette. Nice to see your take on asian girls as well.

Intresting how youre thinking cars or planes...

Whatever you choose its gonna look reet good.

(your post count is 777 - distant neighbour of the beast!)

09-20-2005, 12:12 AM
It looks like that the character is about to fall foward on the thumbnail:p :D

09-20-2005, 01:36 AM
ahhww~i love this design, she has this oriental aesthetic features on her!very interesting indeed:thumbsup:

09-20-2005, 07:29 AM
Cool character Poshspice :) Nice work :D

09-20-2005, 10:22 AM
Yay! More Aly ladies... and asian to boot, fantastic stuff. I really love the surly look on her face, she's not the sort you'd mess with. I love these little file pics in their own right, it'd be great to see a whole host of images like this, especially a villain one. Can't wait to see how these relate to the final image, as it makes me care much more about the image when I feel like I know the people involved, so to speak!

09-20-2005, 11:15 AM
is looking very nice, i love it... :) i dont have anything to say here...

09-20-2005, 12:25 PM
holy.......these girls are killing me,,,,damn good Girl designs again, and the color choises U make are perfect, gives lots of sence....reminds me of Indiana jones movies,   (without harrison of course)

09-20-2005, 01:39 PM
Big fan of your work, this stuff being no exception. I'm liking the direction the character design is taking. Very Biggles. Cant wait to see how the whole scene will shape up.

09-21-2005, 05:07 AM
with those designs the challenge is becoming more difficult to beat!

great work

09-23-2005, 02:22 PM
ooOOoh... lovely asian lady! I thought i'd replied to this since your post, but i ain't... doh!

I think it's great that she looks asian, rather than the normal idealised western 'fantasy' of an asian girl that a lot of digital artists seem to prefer. She's lovely. She looks a bit like an ex-girlfriend of mine... :)

Any progress on your composition?

I'm very impatient, don't you know...

09-23-2005, 08:26 PM
yay! more girl-soldier concepts! Im with u man :D

09-23-2005, 08:38 PM
She could shoot my weapon any day. Looking forward to the full scene. What about her in the Bentley, with the flying machine piloted by the bad guys right on her tail? Just an idea.

09-23-2005, 09:29 PM
Yummyyummy, hell of a badass girl again. Hehe, the famous Aly girls, another beautifull creation. haha, u rock, as walys mate! keep it up! :buttrock:

09-24-2005, 11:35 AM
your imagery certainly rocks! keep it up! :buttrock:

09-28-2005, 06:59 AM
s' a bit quiet round here - wheres thems updaits?

09-28-2005, 01:38 PM
Wow... gratz on that !

Really spectacular, great concept.. eagle flying machine??
This is awesome, will keep track.

Tip, work around light and shadows a lil bit more, increase depht, in such a spectacular visual "storytelling" I see it in dramatical lights and plenty of depth feeling.

Keep going! Take care

This time I am out contests, I am doing a 3D short movie.

10-01-2005, 11:27 AM
Oh dear, a long gap in updating... sorreeee... I'm going to try and get something up over the weekend... but anyway...

For now I'm sulking! Considering how nuts I am for all that retro flying stuff, I'd never watched 'Sky Captain' all the way through. Only up to where the the base is attacked, and other bits and pieces. Well I just did, and am now going to have to re-write the story I'd been concocting to go with this. I'd imagined that Jane and Miki were being hotly pursued with their 'secret' by Colonel Bartlett, and their only escape (to cut a long story short) was to get to Shangri-La! Well guess where Sky Captain and flippin' Polly Perkins end up!? So back to the drawing board, with the story anyway... grumble grumble....

Beelow - Thanks again man!! As for the thumbnail... do you think so...?

Andy H - I still don't know where I'm going with this yet. I keep changing my mind. I had another idea today, which I might do up alongside the current one...

sh@ke - Thanks!

enialadam - Thanyou Madaleine

Zepyhri - I agree! I think there has to be more to a story related piece. If you think up the characters and the world they are part of, the final pic has a sort of history or hopefully a believability. You're doing that with yours too. Cheers!

Genesisa - Haha! Thanks!

kmest - Indiana Jones is there in my mind too. Great stuff!

kboss - Thanks! Jane is meant to be a bit Biggles, but I doubt Miki will be too much like Algy...

mannix8 - You think so!? Yeah, right!! Haha!

duddlebug - The final composition is very slow at the moment as I'm still deciding whether to stick them in a car or a plane. I guess since the Shangri-La thingy, it might be the car being chased by the plane now... with a couple of airships... ahem... oh I dunno... I'm thinking HighwayWomen at the moment... ;)

NinjaASSN - Hehheh! Glad to hear it!

Baron Impossible - Oooh! How rude! What you describe is one of the doodles I've done, and is looking more likely now. Thanks Simon!

the1st_angel - Hi Sacha! They're only quickies these! Yours are looking very nice! :)

coCoKNight - Thanks for that.

Andy H - Hehheh! Patience dear boy...

Djampa - Yeah, thanks. The lighting isn't decided yet... Good luck with your movie!

I was struggling with the perspective a bit on the DragonPlane, so I started blocking out a rough version in Maya, to use as a guide, in fact to be honest I've got to get my enthusiasm back for the idea. I started thinking of other ones as well, which I might put up, but I'll still carry on with this one for now as the finl composition should be coming into focus really... thankyou very much for stopping by! :)

10-01-2005, 11:53 AM
nice to see youre still alive aly!
I shouldnt worry too much about the similarities to sky captain - i thought it was an absolute pile of toss anyway!

Looking forward to seeing some more updates!

10-02-2005, 10:21 AM
Sorry bout that, thumbnail thing. I meant to say drawing, it was late will you forgive me?? But I am glad to see you still here, see you soon and give use an update, holla!

10-06-2005, 04:48 PM (

Not really an update on the final idea, which I've got to get onto really... I've been very quiet and I apologise. Other commitments have occupied my time, or maybe that should read; 'trying to do too much'... I'm still probably going with the air-battle thingy, but I've done little on it over the past couple of weeks. I did start doodling other ideas this lunchtime though. This is very corny and typical fantasy stuff really. Monsters, Witch Queens and Maidens etc... Very rough though... should have done a bit more on it before I posted really...

10-06-2005, 06:02 PM
Indeed, it is cheesy and cliched, but works very well, and has more scope for the patented aly felly lady bonanza!
Its a nice idea, but i think the one with the flying gubbins is more developed and unique. Kudos for trying other ideas though.

Now get crackin with the final thing!

:wip: - thats right - use a mallet, not a pencil or wacom!

10-07-2005, 12:04 AM
Yes Aly you finally posted haven't seen you here for a while. Stick with the original Idea, hope to see some stuff from you more often!

10-07-2005, 02:57 AM
More sky pilots!

Although fantasy maidens arent too bad either.

Keep em coming!

10-07-2005, 04:55 PM

10-08-2005, 05:49 PM
nooooo Aly! dont change the concept. Keep that gorgeous idea of a flying girls during "WW2" coz I think its original and most spectacular. My opinion.

10-08-2005, 05:52 PM
Good luck, Posh!

This is a very rough line drawing of what is moving toward the final composition. I might open it out a bit more as it looks a little cramped, but it gives a general idea of what I'm going for. Yeah, I know flippin' Zeppelins! But only two this time! ;) As I want this to concentrate on character as well as action, I've really brought Miki and Jane and a new friend into the foregound... It's a bit confused at the moment...

Ignore my last submission, it was a brief aberation, and I've started to get more enthusiasm up for this idea again!

Must spend a bit more time looking at the forum, as I've been very busy.... sorry.... :)

10-11-2005, 04:17 AM
mhmmmmm i thought i already answered but seems it just didn't work... your latest composition so far looks cool, judged from what i seen from you, it's goin to be easy game fo you.
The composition so far works fine, only thing that instantly popped in my mind, why not expand the zepelin technology on the dragonplanes and add maybe a bigger body or eventually tanks that have some helium in them, sort of something that helps to float... they actually don't look like as if they were able to carry the weight of the gondolas.

keep it up mate, hope to see ya get buisy on this soon again :)

I think it's pretty good, at least my faviorite cause has some action and movment,
not sure if that is zeppelin on fire in the back but I think that would be just awsome, if you could do like the big fire and explosion of the craft in the background
very cool idea :scream:

10-11-2005, 08:30 AM
Good luck with your idea:) Like the zeppelins on the background. The hole composition is curious hehe:thumbsup:

10-18-2005, 10:46 PM
know that feelin well, been an age since i've been in here, this is looking good Aly, spiffy and flytastic, most definatley spectacular

10-18-2005, 11:17 PM

I am loving this concept because it is a little different and I also know with your skill you can easily pull it off brilliantly. I do agree that the composition is a little cramped for such a "big" subject but I like that you want to concentrate on the characters as well as the action.

I am looking forward to seeing more!

10-18-2005, 11:58 PM
I am waiting for what youd do next, I check back lata!

10-19-2005, 12:24 AM
I dunno, i don't think there's any need to apologize for any zeppelins ever. They're cool, and you do them well.

I'm not quite buying the pose of the woman in the lower right. The pose doesn't seem to jibe with the position of the gun. Her pose sort of says to me "I wanted to draw a woman front view but there's no real reason for her to be facing forwards here, so I'll twist her body so we can see the front anyhow." :) Sorry! Maybe if the gun were mounted more forwards and pointed forwards, like over the viewer's left shoulder...?

anyhow, good luck with it...!

10-20-2005, 01:41 AM
Whoo! It's a Poshspice!

10-24-2005, 11:25 AM
The last sketch is the one I prefer.
I especially like how you suggested the presence of the huge zeppelin behind the clouds.
However, to add some depth an spectacular feeling, I think you could enlarge the foreground, to have it closer to us. ( to give the impression to the spectator, that he's on one of these ships)

Keep it up !

10-26-2005, 05:19 PM
it is a bit confusing, true :) but still recognizable hehe... I think that the main problem at the moment is, that the composition is a bit stiff. everything goes straight in left direction, and the "plane" in first plane straight to the viewer. rotating them a bit into the left as well, wil give much more dynamic to the whole image and bring new posabilities for better details as well as for better reading and more action. Thats r my thoughts, hoping to help a bit.

10-27-2005, 08:15 PM
hey posh... your entry is based on "Lady Frances Drake"? looks similar...:D best of luck:thumbsup:

10-27-2005, 11:00 PM
Looking great, I especially like the idea of the huge zeppelin thing in the background, should give it a good sense of depth and scale

11-01-2005, 08:08 AM
Got any tasty update morsels for us?

Dont give up!

11-01-2005, 08:42 AM

NICE! i try to not miss any threads. and i have to admit i have done a poor job at doing so.

well here i am wishing you best of luck. i LIKE and carry on with the good work.

11-01-2005, 08:17 PM
I can't apologise enough for not updating for so long, and ta sooo much for still stopping by! :) I've been very busy with other bits and pieces, and have been away a bit as well. Hopefully later this week I'll get back on this full time, as I've been rethinking the idea kind of... and yes, I know it's on the same lines as Lady Frances Drake, but that's sort of deliberate. The reason the girls head is twisted, is she's being shot, but it's not very clear and that'll be altered later.

Thanks guys! :)

11-02-2005, 09:13 AM

11-17-2005, 12:56 AM
Really cool. I don't think it's to complicated, but that could just be me. It really seems spectacular with all the stuff that's going on. Hurry up and finnish!

11-17-2005, 01:50 PM (

Talk about cutting it fine...!! I really don't know if I'm going to finish this now, but I started doing a bit on it at lunchtime today, so I might as well have a go!

I'll submit a line art milestone next, but I've kind of already started colouring it, for what it's worth...

Just a bit of work on the BG, even though I've not decided on the final composition... I think this may end up being quite an organic process... :\

11-17-2005, 02:04 PM
uhh..we have a pulse! beep...beep

11-17-2005, 02:09 PM
lol Squib, that comment made me spit out my cold chocolate.

Hope you can finish it Aly, it looked extremely promising (well, it still does :))

11-17-2005, 02:25 PM
uhh..we have a pulse! beep...beep

Actually... i'm not sure we do.

Aly doesn't need a pulse.

He's the prince of darkness, y'see. He needs only marmite, hummous and rice cakes. And the blood of buxom virgins.

11-17-2005, 02:28 PM
I love it to see those good old technical stuff combined with fantasy elements.
Living in such a world had to be nice especially with these beautiful women you're
painting ;-) I got an eye on your artwork and can't wait to see the final piece.
good luck

11-17-2005, 03:11 PM
Whahahaha, squib that is a damn shame!:applause:

Glad to see you post something new, posh I hope to see you finish this entry!

11-17-2005, 03:50 PM
Aly, great to see an update. I cant wait to see more.

11-18-2005, 10:21 AM (

Going to make this my line-art update, although some things may end up being changed. Phew... Changed the girl in the foreground so she isn't so awkwardly twisted.
