Ok let`s start with this idea, imagine that the San Andrea Fault collapsed and "the big one" come... the scene will show how the earthquake was big and how humans rebuided the area 30 years after. A monument skyscraper stands close to the fault.
Anyway it`s a start... any comments warmly welcomed.

This will be more readable, my drawing talents are.. inexistenet ;)
Now you can see the scale of the monument/building (700m hight) which shows that humans wants always to defiy the nature and "show her" they will always rebuild after her`s attacks.
I have to find a good angle and an interesting fault shape to make feel the scale and make this a really spectacular shot.

Hi Maciej! I think your concept looks really good so far - it's quite hard to get a feel of the size of the monument right now but I'm sure when you add some people it will be much more impressive.
Difficult choice of the camera angle... I think the left is more dramatic and the right is more in harmony... I suggest you try it out later when you got more in place. I like the lighting you got so far - this can become really stunning:thumbsup:

The framing, shadow and light, contrast will really determine how this one turns out. I love the concept. I would consider putting the camera at a skewed angle.

I have experimented with many camera angles and I think this one is interesting... I will have much more to model (an entire city in the background) but this makes the challenge better :)
I will improve alot all the fault beacause it not looks always verry clear.
I`m thinking also about few planes passing on the forground... mabe with some smoke like for a national anniversary.. maybe the opening of this big building...

PS: If you want to model a whole city, I found a good way to achieve this in a quick way with 3dsmax.

Thank You Nomad, the building reminds me of one of my faculty projects, thuogh mine was horizontal.
Anyway I can only admire this project from design standpoint, simply wonderful. This is light years ahead of what the rest of big tower architects are doing excluding mr. Santiago Calatrava.
... I simply can't stop looking at it :)

Just another concept to set the scale, you can see now roads and small red cars on it. At A4 format they will be enough readable.
I painted a new fault on a flat plane. It looks much better and realistic.
Also I added floors to the big building to see the scale... and reworked the light colors...

Oh, that camera angle works really well, coving both near and far effectively. You've got lots of work ahead with this plan though :scream:

I`ll see how it works when the fault will be modeled with various high levels etc.
Fill all this "logically" with buildings will not be easy... I need a real architectural cityplan.

I would rough out the buildings... Basically stick a bunch of cubes to represent every last building... Get that done so you can focus on the details.
You have a ton of modeling to do... But I think this will be awesome when you are done!

HammaJamma yes I will make building blocks in low poly then see which building will be interesting to place and where... I will really make a movie set with no useless modeling "out of the camera" :D
The composition of the picture is nice. The biggest building has a strong presence, but I think he would be more impressing if it was closer to the camera. Then it would give a sensation of flying above the city.

Thank you for your comment agou but I have to disagree about to putting the main building close to the camera beacause we will not see that it stands close to the fault which is importent for the story. It`s a monument builded to be bigger than the "forces of the nature".

A fist try in the modeling of the fault, you can see on the right the displacement map image I used for.
The resolution of the grid is too small hovewer I have already 800k polygons :-/
I worked a little on the building in trying to get an interesting shape.

Next update of the fault model.
I splited it in two parts (you can see the jonction) with a higher def closer. My polygon count reached 2.5 million oO but the result is ok for me. Now I will refine the details and could start building the city.

Let`s start the main building.
I based its construction on four towers (green) connected with some tech elements (red) which will also serve as hanging gardens.
You have here a main floor element which I have to clone...

On the right you have a simple box cutted to the shape. It will be used for the glass structure.
Beacause all will be transparent I have to design elements inside each floor like office desks, computers, people etc.
I have to put also lights inside... but beacause I`m rendering in radiosity I think simple luminous boxes will be enough.

With hope this preview is readable... I modeled furniture and walls with four different sets. When I will clone the floors I will try to vary as much as possible those elements.
In red you have the pillars and a structure where goes cables and lifts.
Now I have to make the glass and a test render to see if my elements are visible and how much.

It`s maybe not looking spectacular but that shows the amount of details inside the building and it structure.
Next I will add the glass cover.
That building looks promising. It really lends it self to a high resolution, high quality ray traced render. I donít think many other people would have gone to the trouble of including so much detail.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

It looks great, but are all of those detils realy important. I guess that the glass you gonna put on it has a reflective material, so are you really going to see all of the furniture inside. Love your valley, looks very promising...

Thanks to stopping here larsgehrt. Yes the details are importent beacause there will be light inside the building, the sun light will be low and the material will not be reflective at 100%.
The result will be maybe "delicate" but I hope enought interesting to catch the spectators eye and make him think "thers something in the building".

I added the lighting in the interior of the building. It`s simple luminous planes which I placed randomly so you can see that some floors are less or more luminous.
Now I will add the glass and see the result.

I`m enought happy with this result to move forward... I have to focus next on the base of the building.

Finally I`m moving forward :) I have optimized my superhuge fault model to something less heavy (thank you polygon cruncher) and can work on the environment buildings. I will texture the fault later but in fact almost will be done in 2d post which will be faster and will look much better.
C&C welcome about the final camera angle.

Just a short image to show how I`m placing the roads.
First a placement  Beacause there is levlel differences I had (like in real world) to dig into the surface  to have a clean path for the road .

As Sergey suggested I made the fault deeper... in fact I changed alot the bottom of the valley by adding irregular highs which looks much better now.
I also added few roads (highways) and a new base for the main building.
I think it is going to be wonderful when you are complete.Good luck with the contest.:eek:

On start I created a module with few elements. I`m keeping a geometrical shape of the module to easily copy and paste it in other parts of the terrain (with few modifications to not have exactly the same buildings look).

Let`s try to move forward today... I have created a simple building standing on a place. The image shows how I`m working in texturing this place. Beacause all is seen from far and from top there is no need to add any other details (exept lamps which I`ll add later)

For this building I used the same technique as for the big main building: I placed a first facade of glass and added inside a lighting surface. But this time I made a textured one to avoid to model the interior.

Just a render of all I did for now with a small zoom on the brige. All the other buildings and filling the terrain will come fast now.
For the fault I decided to make all the details by painting over the final render because I will not have the time to model each rock formations as I wanted :(

Finally going forward... here are three first layers: one for the fault, one for forground left buildings and one for the middle left buildings.
Will come another four layers plus one for the huge building on the right.

For the buildings texture I used a verry simple method: this simple image with verry small color variations.
As a cubic mapping, of different sizes depending of the buildings, this works well as plates of beton used to build the facades.

I have finally done the most importent: I rendered the big building in hi-res. Now I have "just" to fill the background with buildings, roads and forests.
At final some painting to rework the rocks and... done :]

I have cloned the seats and rail extruded the beton structure.
I`m not going to make here something real beacause I have not enough time and architectural knowledge. In the corners I will put the stadium pillars. It will be smaller than the one you see on the plan.

Now something different. I have no time to play with volumetrics so I will use a simple trick to create the fog: I created a plane which I bent to fit along the fault. I will map this plane with cloudlike transparent texture. This should work well as fog. If needed I will make few different layers of this "volume fog plane".

A render just to show the stadium in position... I`m not happy with the stadium orientation, I will make around 40degrees turn left to show more of the backside of it. Also this will be less distracting from the main building.

Finally this looks like a final... but thers still some things to do...
What I have done here is:
_ I added a better render of the stadium with an other angle of view and more buildings behind.
_ I added a matte painting of rocky hills where no buildings could be build
_ I added some post effects like flares and color corrections.
_ I added a haze in distance

We will always rebuild!
Even after a giant earthquake which killed millions and destroyed the city, humas rebuilded their town.
On the center of the destroyed city they builded an impressive skyscraper as a monument to show to mother nature that they will always rebuild!
the image shows a city rebuilded on the borders of a fault made by a recent earthquake. On the right stands a huge building builded as a monument on the memeory of the earthquake and to defy nature.
Image size: 2832 x 3964 pixels (23,98cm x 33,56cm at 300dpi)
Photoshop full layered file size: 250MB
Polygon count: no idea... maybe around 5millons with only the fault around 700.000 polygons.
Render passes: around 10 with a fault alone, many building blocks, bridge, cars and two for the main big building.
The image tooks me around 17 days of full time work (from concept to final image) of course this was extended to three monthes of the contest period by working a hour or two a day.
Thank you to everybody who gived me a support and interesting critics & comments.
