09 September 2005, 08:28 AM
Interssant idea.
The odeling looks good. If you want to respect the reference clearly, the fin have to be more rotate direction the sea. And the aileron is more down on the animal but it is already great llike that.
Good luck.

arLutiK

Antone, I'm an expert in whales (like you can see in my thread), so I'm gonna be hard on you but don't take it bad.

First of all , Orca are way longer and around the tail it becomes really thin, always try to imagine your whale is a torpedo (some dolphins actually looks like torpedos), the fins on the side next to the body need to get smaller, they are much narrower next to the body, and now my big critic since I already did this critic to some cg in a whale documentary, the head of your orca looks more like a pac man then a killer whale, you need to understand they are dolphins the biggest of them all and they have a little beek, not as big as dolphin but it is present an d the head is more conick then round. If you need more references let me know I might have a few. Hope I wasn't to hard on you but it is my favorite animal so I can get personal when it comes to Orcas. Oh for the dorsal fin, on the ref you have that is a female you can tell by the dorsal fin that is small, males have very long ones. When you'll do the texture remember that they are black in white, except for the stain behind the dorsal fin that is called the saddle, it is grey.

PS: I understand this is just the begining of the modeling, lets see it this way all I wrote before well see it as guidelines. ;)

09 September 2005, 05:31 AM

JamesMK
09 September 2005, 08:42 AM
Surely good and well-informed points from ar LutiK there - I do like the model so far actually, and the slightly stubby shape makes it look very solid, so it works well already in a sort of impressionistic way.

madshooter
09 September 2005, 08:00 AM
For start the model looks fine. I dont have enough knowledge about whales but from the snaps which you are using as your reference, I agree with Ar lutik the head needs to be more conic shaped. As far as modeling is concerened the wireframe looks clean.

It is really a good start, Keep up good work dude:thumbsup:

ace4016
09 September 2005, 06:15 AM
Much better. Maybe it could be slightly longer? The "nose" needs to be defined a bit more to better show the forehead I think. Looks like you got the basics of it, just tweaking from here on out.

Here are some refs that might help with the "nose", body, and skin texture:

arLutiK

Good progress

The nose, the fin is not pointy enough, but the tail needs work, you did a fish tail

check this

http://www.thebigzoo.com/animals/zoom/Orcinus_orca_005.asp

back of the tail (under)

try google search orca or killer whale, and get lots of reference it will help your modeling

thanks ar LutiK I will try to change them

ace4016
10 October 2005, 09:14 AM
With the "nose", from the side view, try making the nose have a tighter contour then the rest of the body, while from the front/top view you make it thinner as well. The tail looks better but i think the end of the tail needs to be more of a single curved line with the center going in (like in the picture ar lutik showed). Also, from the top view i see the end of your whale's body ends right where the tail starts when it should end (and taper down) near the end of the tail. Try to really look at the refs for small details. Also, this link might be of interest to you: http://www.nsrl.ttu.edu/tmot1/orciorca.htm. Read what animals they hunt; if you decide to change your concept you might want to go for capturing when a pod hunts down a sperm whale (box nose) or so:thumbsup: . Orcas are great hunters, that's why they are my favorite dolphin/whale.

Dodgeas3d
10 October 2005, 06:05 PM
The model itself looks fine maybe the top fin needs adjustments.

U added only texture, but no shader.... play with a shader and texture to make it look like wet, make sure to put something into environment to get nice reflections. Goodluck!

ace4016
10 October 2005, 05:03 AM
Nice going. Try rendering closer to the model and at a bigger res next time though so we can see it a bit clearer.

Looks like the black of the texture could be closer to full black. I would also make the white spot near the eyes a bit higher. I agree with Dodgeas3d about playing with the shader, mainly the specularity. Be sure to add a normal spot light so the specularity shows (skylights don't affect specularity). Keep it up:thumbsup: .

hey mate, this bridge has a nice style and is very clean modeling..i like it..about the color on the whale..i think the spots are ok..but i think the material properties will play an important part in the final look...u know specular and glossiness values.., but is looking good already..keep on the good work mate:wip:

Looks good, looks wet:thumbsup: . I think you may have to turn the white parts a bit of a very light grey (very closer to white though). Might just be the lights, but it looks extremely bright. Keep it up.

rattlesnake
11 November 2005, 08:11 AM
hello...yeah the specularity is ok for a wet look...this is really nice if the whale is going to be shown outside the water..inside the water maybe this effect is not ok..maybe a 10 in specularity value and 5 in glossines..(3dmax parameters), if your planning to make it outside u can make a mask ..to show some wt parts and some dry parts, like when we get our skin wet it makes water drops:thumbsup:, i really like how the whale looks:applause:

antone-m
11 November 2005, 03:24 PM

ace4016
11 November 2005, 01:01 PM
Hm, hehe, he seems less shiny and there are no shadows now:P . That's the problem with changing renderers and light setups. I would probably sharpen the transition from white to black a bit, and increase the image map size. I wouldnt worry too much about getting the light setep for showing off the orca now, you'll need that time for the final light setup in the scene. You seem to be spending a lot of time on the whale, yet you have an entire scene to finish too (minus a bridge). Hurry so you'll have time to fix the material and lighting setup, and since the final image size if huge, you'll have to make sure you have enough time to render it out. Keep up the updates:thumbsup: .

Keep up the updates:thumbsup: .
hehehe okay mate:thumbsup: I will use the time I have in making the scene :bounce:

I have a suggestion: it would be cool a bigger trafic light showing a draw of a jumping whale when green http://homepages.cwi.nl/%7Edik/english/traffic/signals/s/spec-4.gif Like this :)
