09-05-2005, 09:23 AM
Good luck emmanuel.

Bonjour Manu,
oooh, this is going to be fun. See you around my friend, heeheehee.

09-06-2005, 07:12 AM
the1st_angel : how is you cintiq ?
authentic : hello dear hair loser. Thanks for your kind comment on my previous pic
MDN67 : merci beaucoup. Je sens qu'on va bien 'amuer !!!
NOOB! : Hi dear Dali-esque NOOB!
calisto : YES ! Damzelle Calisto is here !!!
Arc80 : Hello Archie. Here we go again.

Good luck to you all... Have you noticed that we have 3 months to work, this time?

Here are my first thoughts :

1 - The magician who stole the moon in his handkerchief : the greatest magician in the world is about to make the moon disappear.... Hint : that's a matter of point of view...
2 - The Show Must Go On : a huge rock show, where all the staff is on stage, supported by senile dinosaurs ! With full projectors, Kiss-like groupies. The stage would be made of dinosaurs' skelettons and all power produced by fat hamsters.
3 - A Ben Hur-like powerdrome : a big race showing plenty of dinornis running, crashing, etc... The arena is ancient-like, but there a lot of lights and huge screens for the show...

That's all for the moment, Folks.

09-06-2005, 12:15 PM
Salut Manu! Great to see you here, I just know we're gong to see some more work formidable, bon chance! (or should that be bonne chance?)

09-06-2005, 01:24 PM
Hi Sam ! It's a great pleasure to see you and many well-known names in this challenge !!!
I wish you the best of Inspiration  :bounce:

btw : you were right when you wrote "bonne chance", He He

About my thoughts for this challenge, I'll add this one :

- a micro-race between dragonflies and their riders, seen thru some microscopic camera.

09-06-2005, 04:16 PM
Spacesnail, welcome back, good luck to cuzzo, holla!:scream:

09-06-2005, 04:36 PM
Yo snail! Hope to see some real killer details this time aswell! :D

Good luck!

09-06-2005, 07:11 PM
:bounce: hi! good luck! :bounce:

09-06-2005, 07:37 PM
Hey, 'snail, good to see you back again. I'm sure this will be great, your work is always spectacular. :) Good luck!-mike

09-07-2005, 09:59 AM (

Hello !!
Here is a very quick sketch for my first idea.

09-07-2005, 10:01 AM
nice :)

El SpectacularrRR!!

09-07-2005, 10:04 AM
Great !! Magic was also a possibility for me.
Cool point of view.

09-07-2005, 10:54 AM
nice one spacesnail~i was wondering if the spectators down there actually see if he's holding the actual moon~:)keep it coming mate~:scream:

09-07-2005, 11:57 AM
Hello manu!! what's up man? good to see you again...

Very good start with a very funny idea..that's great man!

Good luck!

09-07-2005, 12:00 PM
Squibbit : thanks for the name... I previously thought his name could be : " Goliath Silvermine" (He He, kinda David Copperfield but even more pretentious... if it's possible !)
authentic : thanks, dude.
sh@ke : err... s**t, you're right !!! I have to reconsider my point of view... GRRRRRRR
Fiolka Alexandre : hello man. Happy to see you here

09-07-2005, 03:39 PM
Hummm... finally I'll be using this concept for the 2D : 3D section

But I just thought about a Hard-Rock Show Race. With 2 huge towers of lightings, mad heavy metal crew, stages pulled by heavy dinosaurs (carnators or something like that).

***Btw, Squib, the wormhole in my head is fine, but I still haven't recovered the brain...***

09-07-2005, 03:43 PM
haha! awsome! he is so the classic over the top magician! :)

09-07-2005, 03:47 PM
Great first Idea Snail. Can't wait to see more. I'll keep my eye out for your piece

09-07-2005, 03:51 PM
Wow, I love this idea.

Good luck.

09-07-2005, 04:02 PM
That's allready spectacular, grabbing moons out the sky really cool, I just caught up with your thread. Good luck to ya, holla!

09-07-2005, 04:09 PM
This one looks like it will be a lot of fun. Good luck!

09-07-2005, 04:30 PM
LMAO Sweeeeeeeeet! Goodie. Good luck.

09-07-2005, 10:02 PM
looking grand Manu! I love the sense of anicipation about that concept, knowing whether a) he'll make it disappear or b) even stay up there is great! And I had a sneaky suspicion you might have a moon somehow involved, though I'd have loved to have seen Agnes make a star appearance again.

Can't wait to see the other concepts, bravo!

09-08-2005, 12:31 AM
Ooooh, interesting. Like the angle and perspective. I too agree with Sam about the anticipation. will be waiting for the colour pallete if you choose to do this, but i'm interested to see the other two too. Keep it up

09-08-2005, 01:50 PM
CodeNothing, 11th Door, Russel_Nash : thanks dudes :)
beelow : thx too ... I think 've got some issues with the:D moon
botched , fooxoo : thanks too ... fun is the key
Zepyhri : AHHH sweet words from Sam:love: Sorry, but Agnes won't be in this picture... I know, I know, she could have been some kind of assistant... But if you want some more Agnes, you can find her here (
Arc80 : sorry but I moved this pic to te 3D section.

The other concepts are coming soon.
My boss is sneaking around, I have to....>Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep<

- End of transmision -

09-08-2005, 04:33 PM
Wow, didnt see this one coming from you spacesnail! :) You'r last M&S entry was very different in style and theme I think. But I love the concept! So original.. shows that I really have to come up with something better aswell. Oh well.. Keep posting! I'd like to watch you'r progress on this closely.

09-08-2005, 07:55 PM (

Well, here are some quick sketches for my Hard Rock Opera Race. They're very rough (I used a "real" ink brush) while looking at some 80's Rock Shows pics and videos.
Let mme know what you think about the concept.

09-08-2005, 08:26 PM
Tiens ! On dirait qu'on a eu la même idée ;) Jolies Croquis Bravo !!

09-08-2005, 08:37 PM
The Witch : merci pour le compliment :) As-tu aussi prévu des dinosaures pour tirer la scène ? J'espère que nous n'allons pas traiter le sujet de la même manière !
Thx for the compliment. Are you also planning some dinosaurs to pull the stage ?

09-08-2005, 08:41 PM
i think if u made a pic with a gigantic stage structure with all kinds of cool theme
stuff there like in Iron Maiden concerts, could be really cool :)

but like top all that's done before, make it a stadium, half of which is filled with
the set, castles , pillars, statues, creatures, whatever :)

09-08-2005, 08:43 PM
That's just what i'm planning to do... and there will be a race with rolling stages...

09-08-2005, 08:46 PM

09-08-2005, 08:47 PM
Lovely sketches, gorgeously fluid. I particularly love the top left, the perspective screams power! This could be really cool if you go the glam rock route, with all the glitter and platform boots and fantastic KISS style makeup, in fact the top right almost has a bit of a Paul Stanley look to him!

Adding dinosaurs to pull the stage too.. well, thats just a genius stroke. Can't wait to see a more evolved version!

09-08-2005, 08:58 PM
Spacesnail : En fait j'avais pensé au groupe Queen lol

09-08-2005, 09:05 PM
Respect!!!... He He

09-08-2005, 09:07 PM
Quoi de plus spectaculaire que Queen ! uhuh

09-08-2005, 09:10 PM
Great concepts you have goin' on there! I especially love the magician... very whimsical and quite different in style than your M&S challenge. I like!!

Keep crankin' out the gems!

09-08-2005, 10:36 PM
Man, now i have to go subscribe at your 3D thread...oy That magician concept is really good. As for the 2d piece, good start. Definately like their gestures. will be waiting for more

09-09-2005, 08:39 AM

This could be really cool if you go the glam rock route, with all the glitter and platform boots and fantastic KISS style makeup, in fact the top right almost has a bit of a Paul Stanley look to him!

Thanks mam'zelle ! You're right it's Stanley's gestures... Since you seem to particularly know about Kiss, is it true that they smashed little chicken on stage in the early 80's ?

The Witch : maybe Europe ? ... Scorpions ? ... wait, I'll find something smart.... ouais, j'ai trouvé : KYO Lol

artjunkie : thanks a lot :) The magician has turned 3D.

Arc80 : how much threads have you subscribed ? He He

Btw : a friend of mine just sent this picture to me... Just a quotation, no plagiarism...

09-09-2005, 09:06 AM
Yeah seems like a pretty cool concept, I will be waiting to see more!

09-09-2005, 09:52 AM

Thanks Bros and Sis for dropping by :-)
Sorry, I'm a bit lazy this evening...

09-30-2005, 09:03 PM
oooh, an update. Looks great my friend. Whatever is going on with the sky it looks WICKED. It feels like the sky is burning or a huge meteor is about to fall. The characters are developing really nice too. It feels like an old school rock band. I'll have to wait for more before i can bombard you with any critzs

AWESOME job Manu

09-30-2005, 09:09 PM
oooohh yeeaaahhhh:buttrock: !! manuuu!! that's goin' very great!! felicitations...i think that you're doing a very good always i like your work..vivement la suite!!!:)

10-02-2005, 10:28 AM

10-26-2005, 07:23 PM
hey, cool concept! I like a lot! I'll wait for new updates... keep it up!

11-03-2005, 02:16 PM (

Okay, I'm back after many adventures. I finally decided to stop (again) the 3D challenge and go on with the magician. The old-school rock band will join the unfinished section of my work.

11-03-2005, 02:18 PM (

The background is on its way
May I say that I especially love drawing moonlight scenes ?

11-03-2005, 07:20 PM
Welcome back emanuel, I see that you are doing the magician instead of the rock band thingy! Good luck with it!

11-03-2005, 08:15 PM
WOOHOO :bounce: Welcome back Manu and i see you are going back to the magician. THat's AWESOME. It's one of my favorite pieces here. Very impressive start on the Background    Will come back for more spamming

cheers my friend

11-04-2005, 08:36 AM (

A little further more...
Just some words about the process :
I used Greeble + 3DSMax + basic celshading for the background. Clouds are created directly with Photoshop. Basic retouching with PS too.

11-04-2005, 08:47 AM
Archie : hi my friend :bounce: Yes I'm back ! There's nothing I love than Time Pressure ! Lol !
Alexandre : désolé, je fais mes adieux en tant que star du rock ! Ha Ha
Beelow : I'm sorry to quit 3D but there's only 24 hours a day
NinjaASSN + Ducklator : thx for dropping by

11-04-2005, 09:29 AM
well done perspective drawing man

11-04-2005, 09:36 AM
I'm loving the sky - looks like a big space-snail trail.

11-04-2005, 05:21 PM
Beautiful work and perspective, Emmanuel! And the palette so far is very "you." :) (that's a good thing.) Good to see you're still on this.

What, by the way, is "Greeble?"

Keep going!

11-04-2005, 06:47 PM
Yup this is definately you. The sky formation is looking Amazing, as well as the detailing for the cityscape   Can't wait for more update

I too am curious, what is GREEBLE?

cheers my friend

11-04-2005, 08:45 PM
I liked the rock band... these sky and perspective looks awesome... keep the great job:thumbsup:

11-06-2005, 08:08 PM
THE CLYKE & Avatarist : thanks dudes ;)
walrus & Arc80 : thanks a lot. I've been very very busy those last weeks. I was even wonndering if I was "me". He He. Good to see you've noticed I'm myself again. About the Greeble thing : it's a very cool 3DS MAX pluginwhich allows you to quickly create a city, death-star and all that sort of things. The results are a little rough, but it's enough for a good start. Here's the link :
Ducklator : Even if there's no rock band anymore, the show goes on with the magician !

11-07-2005, 12:52 AM
ooooo, look at all de little windows u have scribbled!

11-07-2005, 02:15 AM
nice going snail,i like the perspective,u hit it right on~!:)

11-15-2005, 06:26 PM ( name is snail, spacesnail... and I'm very slow... on replying to your kind comments... phew! I'm tired.

11-15-2005, 08:45 PM (

Big city lights... and a half-magician...

11-15-2005, 08:53 PM
Manu -

The city lights are amazing. I love seeing how you go from the 3D and paint over it to give it a lot of character.

The magicial is a lot smaller than I was expecting. I liked the size he was in the original, forst post you showed. But it's still looking great.

Not too much time left... good luck, my friend!

11-15-2005, 08:57 PM
the snail... is alive? :curious:

11-16-2005, 08:55 AM
WOw I thought you gave up. Nice to see you back. To crit your picture : I love the concept and I'll just say to pay attention to give the focus on the magician so to be careful with colors.

11-16-2005, 10:03 AM
:arteest: this is an awesome idea man!!!

11-16-2005, 08:51 PM (

A bigger magician

11-16-2005, 08:58 PM
Squibbit, sh@ke, authentic, nebezial : thanks a lot !!! :beer::beer:
I was very very busy those last weeks so didn't post much updates nor spam or at least C&C to other threads... Sorry for that.

Anyway thanks again for your comments and encouragements !!

Walrus & Authentic, you're right, the magician was to tiny ! Fixed this problem with a crappy scribbled character. See you soon

11-17-2005, 08:44 AM
The posing of the magician is really much better now. Now it's time for refining him.

11-17-2005, 03:29 PM
Really interesting pose of the magician, nice city too, damn I wish I was that patient!:)

11-17-2005, 03:41 PM
whoa what a great idea!!!

11-17-2005, 09:30 PM (

I'm late... I'm late... I'm late...
-said the white Rabbit

--- maybe the pose is too static ?

11-17-2005, 10:01 PM
Awesome idea! :)
I like the previous poses better.. He looks a little bit unsteady right now and that makes him look a bit klumsy. Great magicians allways manage to do their stuff with control and grace! But then again, he IS standing on all that stuff.. :P

Good luck!

11-18-2005, 02:04 AM
an interesting view u've got there~will there be some spectators below cheering him?keep it going~mate:bounce:

11-22-2005, 05:07 PM (

OK, I'm close to the end...
To do list :
- add many many many spectators
- refine the whole pic
- stop looking at all those wonderful and spectacular images of this contest and feeling depressed after that

11-22-2005, 05:41 PM
Depressed? hehe,man your image´s wonderful and original!extra-energy for you!

11-22-2005, 08:38 PM (

Just a little close up

--- Gonzalo Golpe : thanks a lot for the energy booster

11-22-2005, 09:07 PM
uhh...sorry for coming here so late...T_T
it looks so great! i love the contrast of blue and reddish orange. you did a great work on the letters, and i loooove the background!! cheers!! :applause:

11-23-2005, 08:42 AM
What a nose :scream:
No, seriously, nothing to crit really. maybe his elbows are too round...
Waiting for refinement but as I already said, i love the idea.

11-23-2005, 09:07 AM
yeah~~u r almost there :scream:

11-23-2005, 06:04 PM (

Here comes the final straight line...
Squibb, would you mind if I use your "El Spectacularrrrrr..." suggestion ?

11-23-2005, 08:06 PM
fantastic image! from the story to the usage of colors and composition, dynamics and everythink. Only thing is, that clouds look a bit too creamy in my opinion. Other than that its awesome! good luck

11-23-2005, 08:37 PM (

It's now the tweaking session...

11-23-2005, 08:55 PM
beelow : the posing of a character is one of my weaknesses. I used again a trick with a ZBrush model I made... and then discovered of to (almost) correctly use this software.
calisto : Thanks for dropping by Mam'zelle :bounce: and much thanks for the kind compliments
FrozZT : Hope the new pose feels better... thanks for the advice
sh@ke : yep, I'm almost there ! Thanks for the support my friend
Gonzalo Golpe : thanks again for the extr energy He He
authentic : about the elbows, well I wanted a cartoonesque style for the magician. In this way, there's a better contrast with the rigid lines of the building all around... And to introduce some kind of flexibility : DREAm and ILLUSION versus Common life. Thanks for your kind support.
NinjaASSN : Much thanks to you too. Yes, the clouds are a bit creamy... This is due to a new technique I used : the finger smearing Tool itself. I'll take time to have them more "cloudy".

11-23-2005, 11:10 PM
Interesting pose of the character, till the next update good luck!

11-23-2005, 11:17 PM
Oh man, i've missed so much... sorry my friend. I got really busy with other chores.
Anyway, love the composition and the magician ROCKS. The colours are definately you :D Great details and very fun to view. The only suggestion i can say is maybe desaturate it a tad bit. Other than that, i like the right one better than the left. It has a great balance in light and shadow.

will await for the final piece and requesting another wallpaper, please :bounce:

awesome job Manu

11-25-2005, 06:53 PM (

Tweaking Tweaking Tweaking...

11-25-2005, 10:49 PM
great great work!! it turned out beautifully!!

11-26-2005, 12:14 AM (

Just added some detail to the cape...

11-26-2005, 12:19 PM
adding those symbols is a grat idea, really balance the pic well. Did u do some work on the clouds too? It seems better to me now, but still I think it could be better ;) great work!

11-26-2005, 07:19 PM
Hell yeah I love this image Good luck to You

11-26-2005, 07:26 PM
Really nice :applause:

11-26-2005, 10:26 PM
very fun piece. gud luk then again if actual magic really worked.

2 cents - more hues for windows n buildins n a sash belt thing for the el spec...

11-27-2005, 12:40 AM
It looks really great so far :applause: I personally would like to see the underside of the moon so as to make it more clear that it is actually the center of the magic trick. I think the cloth alone covering up the upper parts makes this work very well ... the hat altough works a little against that by covering up the moon imho.

what do you think ? :)

11-27-2005, 03:04 PM (

Thanks for the suggestions !!!
Just have to polish the clouds...

11-27-2005, 04:01 PM
Looking good, Manu! I like the addition of all of the planets and comets and such on the cape, and the clouds are looking better, too.

I agreed with Vahn's last comment, but I am not sure about the new positioning of the moon. in the earlier shots the hat overlapped the moon so you could tell that the moon wasn't going into his hat, and he was clearly positioned in front of it. Now, with the moon over his hat, it's just impossible... It would be nice to split the difference and make it uncertain, present some ambiguity, like you presented in your earliest sketches? What about the hat in the earlier position, only a bit lower, so that it's still unclear whether the moon is in front of his hat or vice versa?

anyhow, just a monir quibble over positioning, overall it looks great. Congrats for getting to the end!

11-27-2005, 07:51 PM (

Thanks Walrus !
Sometimes, I read too fast...:D
And a great thanks to Jugeras & Vahn

11-28-2005, 01:16 AM
Hehe, i'm having the same problem with my waterfall. I need to push it back too. But anyway, i like the add ons on his cape. Great detailings on the props too. This is truely fun and entertaining to see. Can't wait till its finish my friend.

cheers

11-29-2005, 05:30 PM
You are crazy man! This looks fantastic, character is fantastic and great details.go on:bounce:

12-03-2005, 09:21 PM (

Just added a little cow to jump over the moon... whereas I just don't really understand what it means. But I love the expression !

12-03-2005, 09:24 PM (

Well... I think I'll soon call it done

Before you have it finished, I just noticed something, those buildings on the right of the canvas furthest back is throwing me off, the perspective that is. You have this birds eye view thing going on here and that is just the thing that is trippin me out I hope you fix, good luck with your entry spacesnail, Spectacular it is indeed!

Looks great, Manu! The moon is exactly the way I was talking about in my last post: Is it in front of his hat? Behind? You can't tell, which makes it perfect. Great work all the way, congratulations for finishing!

Welcome to EL SPEKTAKULAARR last night show !!!
You will see how the greatest magician of all times is going to stand on the most unstable pile of objects, make the cow jump over the Moon and make the same Moon disappear within his single handkerchief and a top hat.

Come on and take a seat !!!

hey spacenail,

sorry for not dropping by earlier but I don´t want to miss to congratulate you for finishing your entry. As I mentionend earlier: Very beautiful and subtle approach on the topic. Great work but I have to admit I would have love to see this topic finished as 3D-Artwork. The first previews I´ve seen were amazing.

kind regards

salut manu! Great to see you finished this! It was my favourite of all the concepts you did. And the final image is spectacularly enchanting. There is just so much to look at, loads of little details that work so well in the whole. Great composition, i love the way you've used his cloak to round off the corners of the image and bring the eye back round. Magnifique!

I didnt find this wonderful picture until just now, but it was definitely worth finding. Magicians are always spectacular so the concept combined with the execution make this one of my favorite pieces.

Shame on me, I didn't take the time for (at least) a little reply to your kind words & suggestions Well, well, well... The contest is over (can't wait for the next one) and I wish the best of luck to all participants... and congratulations to those who couldn't finish in time, there's so much entries with a lot of potential Special thought to Calisto and Dunkelgold :
Haraldus : thanks dude
Gonzalo Golpe : thanks a lot! This is time, I read ALL of the guidelines.
Ste7en : a great magical thanks
Zepyhri : thanks a lot, my dear english friend
Fahrija : yep, i first intended to work it as a 3D pic... alas, my out-of-date official lightwave 5.6 license couldn't manage enough vertexes and crashed everytime, so i brought the whole thing to 2D. I'm trying to learn Blender + ZBRUSH for the next challenge.
Squibbit : it's great to have you too, especially with your weird and hilarious compositions, HA HA HA. And mucho thanks for the "El Spectacularrrrrr... suggestion"
Arc80 : it's great to have you on my side !!
Vahn + sh@ke + Michael Chang + weedlog : a big big thank and good luck to you too
Walrus + beelow + jugeras: you're always of good suggestion many thanks to you. Your entries are really great.

And again best of the best luck to you all
