Just playing around with my first idea. I am trying compositing of two different elements into an improbable event (which is probably not suitable for the challenge rules - so expect this to get dumped :D ).

I thought it would be fun to illustrate something that seems unlikely but composited together tricks the viewer into understanding that it is as it appears.

Here a body builder "throws" a large 747 into the air like a paper airplane. Rough & quick - 15 minutes in Photoshop.

09-05-2005, 09:53 PM
hahah great idea!!

09-05-2005, 09:53 PM
This is the time when the imagination can go nuts! Top stuff Kirt! :)

09-05-2005, 09:56 PM
wow. great concept!
btw. Is the man running or falling?

09-05-2005, 09:59 PM
hehe, like the concept. At first I thought he was running/jumping after the plane though. Keep it up.

09-05-2005, 09:59 PM
wow. great concept!
btw. Is the man running or falling?
I was trying to capture him in an "UUGHHHNNN!" moment where he throws the plane. Think of a javelin thrower in the Olympics. They nearly hit a falling down state in between throw and stop.

I know ... not real great pose. It was quick. :D

09-05-2005, 10:00 PM
Go Kirt!!! :bounce: Subscribed!! Hey, I thought you had another thread elsewhere...hmm, must be going senile. :)

Well, the airplane concept might fly in Europe or Asia *skinny people*, but I dunno about in the US...:scream:

Cheers! :)

09-05-2005, 10:02 PM
Rebecca - LOL. There are a few fit people left in the states. You bad. :p

09-05-2005, 10:03 PM
Ahhh. So hes throwing the plane! :banghead:
At first I thought he was late for the plane...

but what a great Idea!

09-05-2005, 10:05 PM

Are they hiding? :scream:

09-05-2005, 10:07 PM

Are they hiding? :scream:

09-05-2005, 10:12 PM
We are not hiding.

good luck! I'll be checkin this thread out!

09-05-2005, 10:22 PM
No Rebecca, they're just ugly. :D

09-05-2005, 10:23 PM
That's my dad (s)! :scream: Ah. Sorry...spam...:D

09-05-2005, 10:26 PM

Kids are on my mind this afternoon ...

What if all that youthfull energy was used in a sprint race with the fastest of adults. Who would win?

My money is on the kid.

I know this one is crap-tastic, but I have a habit of posting just about everything that I do during these challenges.

So, suffer through this one ... I'll have something different - uhm - tomorrow? Maybe?

09-06-2005, 07:45 AM
very nice , although, I'd recommend you'd put one or two other meteors, maybe
shards of this one, flying thru the air, giving more hint to what exactly is hitting
the ground here...

09-06-2005, 07:48 AM
hie kirt,i kinda like what u got here, the latest piece, meteor striked sending all the cars and van flying~the angle really illustrate the impact:scream:

09-06-2005, 07:48 AM
cool! I like the colours and sense of destruction! nice work!. :)

09-06-2005, 07:50 AM
I really like that meteor image. It's certainly 'spectacular'! I love the little blue pick up... looks like a VW!!

Refreshing ideas... wonder what's next? :)

09-06-2005, 09:03 AM
I like the last pic too!

09-06-2005, 09:18 AM
Ha! Mass destruction! I think this idea could really work if you made the campground much bigger and had the destruction more widespread. Just think of the things you could have flying through the air :) One thing with this one, though, the meteor angle is similar to the camera angle tilt - would it be better to have it more at right angles?

09-06-2005, 09:40 AM
squibs and barons points sound good, yay, and maybe a camper flying towards the cam with sum closeup panic?
:) great start so far, looking for more

09-06-2005, 09:41 AM
I really like the meteor idea

09-06-2005, 09:42 AM
Good luck and have fun:bounce:

09-06-2005, 09:42 AM
Have fun man....:bounce:

09-06-2005, 09:57 AM
Kirt! Great to see you participate :)

I like your meteor idea.. it has loads of potential. I kinda had something related to meteor in my mind too.. in 3D section though :)

All the best luck to you!

09-06-2005, 04:20 PM
Vzzzt.... WahBOOM! Cool man, cool :)

09-06-2005, 04:28 PM
Great you have started already, good luck to ya, holla!

09-06-2005, 04:49 PM
WOW!! It more movement.cool but I thing it should have more meteor in the picture.
so the result is BIG BOOM!!:bounce:

09-06-2005, 04:58 PM
Nice sketch man. Good luck and have fun

09-07-2005, 06:58 AM
Oh yes Kirt I do like that idea  not craptastic to me. Maybe there is something wrong with me...hehe....:)

09-07-2005, 07:10 AM
You sir, are an animal.

Best of luck!

09-07-2005, 09:29 AM
Good luck, Kirt!! :buttrock: I'm liking the concept so far, great explosion!

09-07-2005, 10:37 AM
You better make that paper airplane more square

09-07-2005, 12:06 PM
Hello kirt! good concept! good luck man!

09-07-2005, 07:49 PM
Cool sketch Kirt. The challenge is on!!! :bounce: :bounce:

Februaray 3018 South Pacific coast - Near disaster was averted when quick acting interstellar biologists intersected a misplaced energy leach that somehow wondered into our quadrant of space. The creature, which normally is attracted to the nebulous clusters in the Gamma 12 system, seemed malnourished and weak.

As it passed the moons orbit biologist quickly teathered the creature and began stimulating it's sensory lobes in a dramatic attempt to redirect it away from the major cities and energy production facilities along the Pacific coastal areas.

The creatures health seemed to prevent it from recognizing the immediate stimulous and extra interceptors were dispatched to assist.

The creature, measuring some 80 kilometers in length, continued on it's path and came as close as 43 kilometers to the city before responding to the biologist's efforts.

Residents were quite startled to see the creature descending upon the city. "I've never seen one so close, let alone anywhere near our home planet before" said one witness, "I could only imagine what sort of damage a creature that size would be capable of on the surface."

Local government leaders thanked the teams who help prevent the disaster, but were also quick to point fingers stating that such an event shouldn't be possible if budgets on the Solar Defense Grid hadn't been cut back 10 years ago.

09-08-2005, 01:26 AM
WOAH! i'm geting dizzy.... Awsome perspective. :) ... and story!

09-08-2005, 01:29 AM
Yeah, sorry guys ... but I really hate the meteor strike image. The idea just seems so generic and boring. I'm sort of trying to find direction away from the natural disaster thing. Although, I don't know if the energy leach fits in that category also.

Not my usual satirical stuff ... I'm having a difficult time getting a concept that I'm really excited about. I have a tendacy to procrastinate on images that aren't interesting to me. So, I'm going to keep doodling away here for a week and see which idea I like the best.

Hang in there ... nothing concrete yet. :bounce:

09-08-2005, 01:56 AM
Man this last sketch is awesome! Also the concept! Keep going with this...very interesting!

09-08-2005, 02:38 AM
It's fun seeing all the variety of ideas! Hope you find a pic you're excited about. :)

09-08-2005, 03:06 AM
Rockin' sketch and commentary Cap'n Kirt!!! I think you should do your own version of the "the Onion" website, lol!

How about the 'time leach' ~ you could just do a fantastic rendering of the front page of CGTalk!!! It'll be Spectacular!!! :bounce:

Or...how about the 'IQ Leach' ~ that would be the Post Random Pictures Amongst Stylish thread!!! Or the...or the...

Yeah. I'll leave the ideas to you. :D

Thought for the day: Cows make Californians...Cranky. :wise:

Cheers, :)

09-08-2005, 04:11 AM
That is an awesome perspective, and nice concept. Hope you settle on something soon.

09-08-2005, 04:55 AM
I love the perspective that is hip! good luck to ya if I have not said it already! I will be keeping up with this thread!

09-08-2005, 06:09 AM
Oh yeah once again...i do like this one better and the story is really cool...:applause:

09-08-2005, 06:29 AM
I like your first concept ... Its too powerfull

09-08-2005, 06:49 AM
hey non- comics this time, looks sweet

09-08-2005, 07:25 AM
I love the perspective on that last one Kirt! So does an enrgy leach have all sorts of sparks and electrical currents all over it? (to make it look even more spectacular?)

I can look at this image and imagine it all coloured and it'd look great methinks...

Is this likely to be the ONe?

09-08-2005, 07:47 AM
Am loving the Energy Leech concept! :bounce:

09-08-2005, 10:22 AM
hehe now if your biologists only had squibbits stormriders it would be a piece of cake to lure the leach away .... or just put duracell bunny rebecca in a rocket .. :D

great concept ... composition is really good in the last one

09-08-2005, 11:05 AM
Hey!!! I heard that!!! :scream:

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm *Marge Simpson grumble* :scream:

09-08-2005, 12:28 PM
it has to be the one! It's cool!

09-08-2005, 03:49 PM
everyone - Thanks for the lovin'!

The energy leach seems to be my most favored idea so far. But I do have one more that I'll be sharing with you soon. Just need to find some more reference images to consult (and of course ... do the actual sketch). :D

I think the last idea (not shown here yet) will probably be the one I'll be working on. No cartoons this time around, I think.

Which means ... a bigger challenge for me. As if completing one isn't challenging enough. :D

09-08-2005, 03:57 PM
Really great that last one!!!The town behind look's a bit like PARIS!
Great man!

good luck and even more have fun!!!

09-08-2005, 03:58 PM
The one was great but the second looks better!! awesome sketch i like !! very good background! I'll come back see next step...colors...maybe?:) Good luck Kirt!

09-08-2005, 04:15 PM
hehehe, do I see some parallels between your last sketch and the desaster at new orleans? :)
The sketch looks already very very spectacular. I would like to see that finished, but first i'm curious to see your other idea / sketch.

09-08-2005, 04:17 PM
a lot of depth to this one, starting nicely. Good composition as well. Wonder why so many start with black and white?

09-08-2005, 05:33 PM
hehehe, do I see some parallels between your last sketch and the desaster at new orleans? :)
The sketch looks already very very spectacular. I would like to see that finished, but first i'm curious to see your other idea / sketch.Hmmmm ... interesting interpretation of that drawing. I wasn't conciously trying to do that, but I guess there could be some comparisons. You're an observant fellow. :D

It probably won't see "finished" status ever ... unless people really hate my next idea. I should have some of those sketches coming up in the next couple of days.

Ranath - A lot of artists do black and white first to get a sense of contrast with the image. If you convert a color image to B&W you can easily see value changes from lightest to darkest. Not enough value difference can make images appear flat and dull.

09-08-2005, 10:50 PM
very interesting. i really dig the perspective and composition so far. keep it up.

http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/10/7783/7783_1126243424_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/10/7783/7783_1126243424_large.jpg)

Just getting a feel for a lighting scheme on my entry. Here's what I'm working on ...

In the future Doctors at the Institute for Mental Health have been experimenting with a new procedure which will allow them to explore the human subconciousness while patients sleep or are under hypnosis.

The new procedure has the ability to project a lifelike three dimensional environment of the patient's dreams. A series of complicated holographic displays project the images in the lab and Doctors are able to walk around in the room while monitoring, and through hypnotic suggestion, instruct the patient to alter the environment.

The system is only visual at the moment but technicians have been able to reproduce audio emitted from the patient's dreams as well. "The problem we're experiencing at this time is that the human brain is capable of calculating more information quicker than our systems can handle," a technician informs us, "So we're getting audio echoes and what can be best described as a thousand voices speaking all at once. It's quite disturbing and humorous at the same time. People's life secrets suddenly flood the room through our speaker systems and you hear everything from secretive affairs, personal fetishes and tomorrow's grocery shopping lists."

The Doctors at this center are currently testing this system on the mentally ill and a few donor patients who have been comatose or in a vegetive state for more than 10 years. Doctors are hoping that this technology will lead to new breakthroughs in curing mental illness, depression, insomnia and (in an optimistic view) eliminate physical impairments that may be triggered by brain dysfunction.

"The visual elements of this device is quite stunning and unbelievable," says one Doctor who has been involved with the testing process. "Once the projectors come online you're literally transported into a facinating new world limited only by the patients imagination.

I have witnessed the rememberances of childhood traumas, surrealistic journeys through a patient's life history, erotic fetish scenarios and even a child's interaction with her favorite cartoon character in a complete environment that resembled a finger paint illustration.

It's just spectacular ... once the audio glitches have been worked out, this will become even more amazing. We should be able to talk and interact with the patient's imagination. Some of these patients haven't been physically able to communicate to anyone for years. It'll be like opening up a new door for these people."

09-09-2005, 05:27 AM
u gonna put any cows in it ?

09-09-2005, 05:34 AM
Geez that was a long winded post. I think I took more time writing that than I did to draw the picture. :D

I think I'm going to go with this idea since I've been wanting to do something really weird for awhile now. Now I just need to get to work developing composition and determining what type of story I want to tell with this idea.

My first thought was to illustrate a child's traumatic experience of being caught in rising flood waters with her mother. I think considering current events it could be a pretty powerful illustration, but I don't want to offend anyone or come across like I'm capitalizing on the tragedy.

A mentally ill patient or serial killer could be another dark alternative. Lots of possiblities there to explore symbolism and twisted, wacked out stuff. Or just go straight out odd-ball and make the viewer try and figure it out on their own. :D

I definately want to show some sort of environment that is somehow blended or fused to the lab where the Doctors and Scientists are monitoring the patient.

And yes ... maybe a cow! :bounce:

09-09-2005, 07:56 AM
If i see a cow in this concept i will definitely lough to death  .

09-09-2005, 12:21 PM
well the cow is tempting... but... i like the other concept better...

09-09-2005, 12:29 PM
wow kirt, i really like the story behind this. the ability to emphasize dreams, really great.

maybe you could make the dream appear in a sphere and let the viewer see from inside it but in the background you can see schemes of the doctors and the facility. by the way, for wicked and frightful dreams, it must not always be serial killers, i recently read a research paper from my university about related stuff. it was really interesting.

09-09-2005, 12:41 PM
I like what I'm seeing, Kirt, and your latest concept opens the way for a variety of imagery in one pic. This might be a strength and a weakness, though.

My vote goes for the energy leech. Strong concept, powerful image. Gotta love those energy leeches!

09-10-2005, 01:07 AM
Right now, I am also leaning towards the energy leech, but if you can show us the twisted world created by the mind of whoever the test subject is in the last concept I may just go for the VR dream world concept (I think an aritst's or crazy person's mind may produce enviroments more spectacular then a murderers mind, but thats all up to you). Good luck figuring it all out.

09-13-2005, 07:13 AM

After several failed attempts at getting the proper perspective on this guy laying on a table. I found a reference image on the net and started again this evening.

I may have to enlarge the area around him if I want to make something spectacular going on in the background. This is just a start.

09-13-2005, 06:01 PM
Wow. Your latest concept is deep. I'm curious to see how you're gonna illustrate and express that, composition, color, and subject wise. I like your leech concept. But your recent concept is definitely more unique.

09-14-2005, 03:05 AM

I really should work on the "big picture" but for some reason I'm concentrating on the characters right now.

Meh ... I make no claims that I know what I'm doing here. :D

09-14-2005, 04:41 AM
ohh  this is going to be interesting! cant wait till you upload some more :D

09-14-2005, 04:57 AM
Hey Kirt! I haven't been following the progress from the start of the thread but from what I've seen I really like the ideas you've got going for this piece.

Just one small thing that stands out from your last update is the perspective of the man on the table. It looks as if he could easily slide off. Maybe it will fit in once you begin to fill the empty space, I don't know, but I'll keep an eye on this thread. All the best! :D

09-16-2005, 06:13 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/10/7783/7783_1126851204_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/10/7783/7783_1126851204_large.jpg)

Dumped the technician that I had in a previous version because it didn't do anything for me. And I ended up with these two items.

Can you tell I'm lost? Weeeeeeee ... challenges always bring out the worst self-critic in me.

I'm not happy.

09-16-2005, 06:18 AM
You have some nice sketches here, kirt, will subscribe to your thread now, holla!

10-20-2005, 07:44 AM

I changed my concept again.

I'm currently working on this one which I'm calling "Like a Snowball's Chances in Hell."

The phrase should be familiar to some, others may know "When Hell Freezes Over". Which both describe an improbable event of biblical proportions.

I'm adding a bunch of tortured souls in the foreground and around the Devil(s) who reside in Hell. The souls will be having fun and playing in the snow ... much to the dissappointment of the Devils.

This is actual size at the moment. I'll upsize it and add more details as I go along.

10-20-2005, 09:04 AM
haha interesting work! Looks like the big Devil is angry, like a little boy haha with his back to them. Love the horns:)

Good luck with your idea!

10-20-2005, 09:13 AM
this new one is excellent, go with it! :applause:

10-20-2005, 09:47 AM
love the idea, can't believe I haven't seen it before! Your sketch is perfect - beautifully consistent (love the light and the rocks) Not sure about the soul embedded in the big snowball, but I guess you're going to be adding to/tweaking that anyway. hurrah.

10-20-2005, 09:53 AM
Hell freezing over, that would be spectacular.

10-20-2005, 01:10 PM
hey really so funny concept!
congratulations...go on bro...

10-20-2005, 02:21 PM
LOL! too funny! Maybe a more dejected look for the main devil? Draggin his trident/spear thingy? Or maybe he has his hand out looking up? Anyway, great color!

10-20-2005, 08:57 PM
This is great, Kirt, I love this concept! I can't wait to see it with more souls added in it. Hell looks very lonely at the moment.

(What's the Shakespeare quote? "Hell is empty and all the devils are here." 'Though I don't know where 'here' is... They're not at my house right now! But I digress...)
Anyhow, good work, hope you stick with this one. Best of luck...!

10-21-2005, 08:06 PM
Back, again! good luck Kirt! I am liking the new concept!

10-26-2005, 05:49 PM
hahaha, great theme with the devils and the snow. I hope to see that one finished some day (even if not for that challenge).

10-26-2005, 07:30 PM
lol... interesting image.... I'll wait for new updates of the last one...

10-27-2005, 12:32 AM
I like the humouristic feels of your drawing. The simplicity you give on your work just amaze me! Why? Because it work. I like everything so far. This expression:" Less is more" apply very well to your work.

Congratulation, and good luck!

10-27-2005, 12:45 AM
Hehe, I like it. Very cute and funny. I can't wait to see it finished.

10-27-2005, 02:21 AM
ha! I love this concept! Beautiful portrayal of the concept too! Excellent stuff!

10-27-2005, 06:51 AM
very cool snow :)
see what's happens :D

10-29-2005, 03:35 AM
Nice change of concept, and funny! I hope you get to finish this peice. Now stop watching power ranger spoof videos and get back to wrok on this:D .

Thanks for the vote of confidence folks. I've been doing very minor things with this since the last update. I stretched the background plate out a bit and repositioned the characters that I have done so far.

Trying to get a grander scale of Hell out of this version compared to the last update. I'm not sure what is going on in the bottom left corner yet, but the rocks that were there looked really bad so I got rid of them.

It's still reading very flat to me so ... who knows what the next update will look like. Maybe a completely new background layout. I dunno. Just trying to move along & get cracking on this dog.

Added a forest of entrails to the right hand side of the image and I'm going to start on my coloring WIP submissions now.

I'm pretty satisfied with this compostion. However, many of the tortured souls are still absent from the image. I think I can add these in where needed and move along at a good pace to finish.

The forest is sort of roughed out but you can see in the bottom right how I'm adding some details and color to it.

This may turn out OK after all. :D

Ooopps ... forgot to mention. The forest of entrails is pretty disgusting (I know) but I wasn't getting an adequate feeling of being in Hell from the previous versions. So, vomit if you have too ... the image needed a gross adjustment (pun intended). :D

I like the original composition best, this newest one is like "OK.. BOWELS, stay in lunch!
Uh, now, what else is there in the pic..."

I'd try to add the entrails in the original pic, much covered in snow but still
clear to see if u look around, now it takes away from the comic impact the
original image had, i think

I mean it was pretty clear the place was hell anyways, but if u wanted to make
it more clear and hellish u could add the intestines there.

the characters , landscape and snow flurry all look great

Yeah, I know Squibby. They're pretty dominant in the image right now. But I will cover them with snow and throw some of the tortured souls in there to lessen their visual impact for the final image.

My intent is to soften them up for the final image. I'm just taking it one step at a time right now and I felt it would be easier to draw them in fully before I started covering them up with snow (so I have a good idea where the snow would rest).
