its the 2nd day and i thought i gotta catch up alil bit,did a quick sketch just now, generated a few ideas and layed out a few sketches.here's one of them,a lil girl watering a flower blosoming in a toilet bowl thrown at a total junk garbage cluttered area.the only plant left in the area she's been living.

A great start, I love your latest sketch ("viewing shattered earth"). Anyway, keep up the good work mate and the best of luck to you.

09-07-2005, 07:11 AM
Excellent so far!
09-07-2005, 07:15 AM
This second concept is cool too!!
I like the family holding hands against the backdrop of the planet. Fab. the contrast between the ordinary and the spectacular (in both images) works great.
09-07-2005, 07:49 AM

09-07-2005, 07:58 AM
I do like this one alot! I think that imagery that places normality in bizarre situations can be very powerful. Great sketches Michael!
09-07-2005, 08:09 AM
hie guys, here's another one, came up with a thought last nite about this, kavadi has always been a tool used for the celebration for the thaipusam fest and the lantern fest are celebrated during the mid autumm, trying to head alil bit to oriental approach.here i have both of the respective cultural fest combined.i'll probably try some color sketch tonite.enjoy and have fun with the challenge:)
09-07-2005, 08:13 AM
thanks alot posh for the comment:)check in again soon ok
09-07-2005, 08:34 AM
I love this concept. Great idea.
09-07-2005, 08:44 AM
This latest one could be a really beautiful image with all the lanterns lit!
That's three beautiful sketches... any more to come? Or are you gonna settle on one of these do you think?
09-07-2005, 09:08 AM
johny - yeah, i'll have to make up my mind soon, out of these 3.tough choices though~haha.:D
09-07-2005, 09:14 AM
heheh judging from our concepts...we can go reeeall crappy:D
09-07-2005, 09:29 AM
good luck bro it's going very impressive...
09-07-2005, 11:03 AM
Hey Mike, I have to say I prefer your second concept, but like Johny said the 3th would make a beautifull piece with all those lights, there would be a great mood (hmm don't think this comment would help you out one bit :D)
09-07-2005, 11:15 AM
Some nice ideas, I like this one the best
wow, starting out nice. 3 point perspective's always nice, you can push it even further when it goes further.. good perspective's the key to get dynamic results.
09-07-2005, 04:05 PM
thanks alot guys,i'll play around with both the concept, here's the color sketch for the viewing shattered earth piece, took me 30 mins to come out with the sketch.:)
09-07-2005, 04:07 PM
This has got great atmosphere already. COOL. Can't wait to see more. Good luck to you.
09-07-2005, 04:23 PM
Interesting! Good luck :D
09-07-2005, 04:25 PM
Ooh, pretty, me likes!!!
09-07-2005, 04:58 PM
Nice colours on the earth one, but I think the lantern one might turn out to be the best so far. Great stuff.
09-07-2005, 05:02 PM
I like the lantern Idea, I would like to see what you can do with this image. I like the latest painting as well! It's your call shake, good luck!
09-07-2005, 05:10 PM
too blur now but I like the colors
09-07-2005, 05:47 PM
Finally found your thread, Michael. :D
Your "shattered earth" and "lanterns" concepts are very strong - don't know which I'd pick as the best (each one offers something different).
All the best. :)
09-07-2005, 07:42 PM
Very beatiful atmosphere. I simply like the blurry stage of your last sketch. The colors are very well choosen. It doesn´t show much content yet but gives a nice feel for the scene. I´m looking forward to watch the progress of this thread.
09-07-2005, 11:13 PM
this looks so beautifull!! it has a nice atmosphere!! cant wait to see more!! cheers!!:D
09-07-2005, 11:25 PM
Nice stuff. Yuna! I just had to say it. This reminds me of some of that spectacular prg art.
Notice how I used the word spectacular. Keep on trickin' on this spectacular piece.
09-08-2005, 12:49 AM
Oh man this could be such a STRONG piece! I love how the heat and smoke are distorting everything! realy gives you a sense of presence and atmosphere. SO GOOD!
mabie have 1 or 2 small areas of crisp lines?
09-08-2005, 01:11 AM
Great concepts, I can't chose either. The color sketch looks great. Waiting to see more from you.
09-08-2005, 07:08 AM
Yo Michael...Beautiful start. Those hazy warm lights...yummy. I think you captured a great feeling. You can really use the characters silhouette against the light to make them stand out and give them some character, by showing what their hands are doing...Perhaps waving good bye, holding each other...
Good luck, Michael.
09-08-2005, 07:19 AM
Great start on the colours!! It's got tons of atmosphere!
So you're going to do some work on a couple...? Some colour experiments on the lantern piece?
Both have bags of potential!
09-08-2005, 07:24 AM
11thdoor - thanks alot:)
fooxoo, rebeccak - thanks for liking it,might wanna go with the lantern idea:D
baron, beelow - yeah, thats what i thought,i'll try out some color tonite for the lantern piece
tolga - thanks mate~
artisticvision - haha, cool u have found me~thanks for dropping by,and the support meant alot, both seems to get alot of attention but i think i'll try out on the lantern idea~:)
Fahrija, calisto, pushav, codenothing, ace - great thanks alot for the comments,i'll see how thing goes with the 3rd one:)thanks again friends, more to come soon, stay tuned and have fun
09-08-2005, 07:30 AM
andi - thanks alot mate~yeah, that was just a rough sketch that too me less than 30 mins,it'll definitely comes along with details on the character if i were to futher develope it.i'll try out on the lantern piece tonite:)
johny - hey john ,thanks for the comment,i came up with a thought on the lantern concept last nite and might try it out later, both seems to be fine but i still have to decide which one to go:)on a 2nd thought,i prefer the lantern piece better~lol, anyway,i'll see how thing goes from here.thanks again
09-08-2005, 08:59 AM
Awesome! Can't wait to see how this will turn out! I especially like the sketch with the three children looking up at the scattered earth. This is going to be spectacular indeed.
09-08-2005, 10:57 AM
Hey Michael! I seem to have inexplicably missed your thread, shame on me. Great start this far, really love the last colour concept, but I also really like the idea of the lanterns as it's probably more original, if you could get the same kind of atosphere as you've got in that last sketch, then wow, it would be great!
Best of luck to you!
09-08-2005, 06:21 PM
 looks great! I really like your color and style.
09-09-2005, 02:11 AM
Kredepops - thanks alot mate~glad u like it:)i'm still playing around with both the concept
sam - thank u very much for the comment, yeap,i'll post the lantern sketch later,i wish the same goes to u aswell:)
Naabie - thank u,i'll do my best:scream:
09-09-2005, 02:36 AM
went back last nice and spend some hours on the color sketch on the lantern concept.here's how it turns out.i'll experiment more with the colors and play around with the mood.thanks alot guys:)
09-09-2005, 02:42 AM
I'm intrigued... It's promises to be a great pic. Best wishes :)
09-09-2005, 02:45 AM
Now that, I like a lot. In fact, seeing the "lantern" concept in color makes me like it a lot more than the "shattered earth" concept; it's more grounded in reality, yet it's also otherworldly at the same time (if that makes any sense).
09-09-2005, 04:56 AM
Now that is impressive! I like the use of color keep it up holla!
09-09-2005, 06:59 AM
Wow very nice sketch   The lighting is particularly spectacular :bounce:
Keep going on !
09-09-2005, 07:04 AM
Looking lovely Michael! It's got a truly magical feel to it. :)
09-09-2005, 07:17 AM
ooooOoOooh!! Go with the Lanterns! Go with the Lanterns!
I love the lanterns.
Did i say i liked the lanterns?
Lovely lovely lanterns... :)
09-09-2005, 08:28 AM
anton - thanks mate~
artisticvision - it does make sense:)thanks alot for the comments.
beelow and spacesnail - great thanks both of u.i have a few more color test on this.will post it up soon
aly and johny - thanks again buddy~i'll probably go with this concept.:)
09-09-2005, 08:34 AM
thanks again guys,i've decided to focus and have a go with this lantern piece, have a long thought and i actually felt i like this better compare to the previous concepts:)here i've came out with a few color test.
09-09-2005, 09:22 AM
I like how the last one looks, but I don't know if the cool colors will work with what you are going for!
09-09-2005, 09:29 AM
Hey buddy, this is looking very promising!!! I like the direction your going , but I dont know if I liked your other one better , what is the main idea for both?? like the plot! Right now I am stuggling to even do more sketches !! been working 2 jobs the last 2 weeks from 7 am till 11 pm so I have no time until next week :( alright buddy take care and I cant wait to see the progress
This is really great. I love the flow of the image and the way it carries the eye through the scene.
Of your colour test, I prefer the first version probably because it is a lot warmer and seems a lot more inviting.
09-09-2005, 09:37 AM
woW!!! why is everybody in such a hurry....we have more than 2 months....
this looks soooo impressive!!!:surprised
09-09-2005, 10:13 AM
u've done a very good progress with ur sketches. For me, the green is the best choice, while there is still some red, warm lightening in the back and here and there, which makes the best contrast to the whole green scene. Keep up the good work buddy!
09-09-2005, 10:49 AM
Wow looking good mike!
I prefer the first one although I really like the second one too.
I like the warm colors better than the cool colors in the third one although I think it does make the lantarn lights jump out more.
Keep it up!
WOW very nice sketch!!
I remember ur M&S work. you have a really good sense of lighting and coloring. This one also has a beautiful lighting. I love it a lot, and concept and composition are very interesting too.
09-09-2005, 12:10 PM
Good luck!) Fine colors!)
09-09-2005, 12:13 PM
yeh real nice! excellent work!
09-09-2005, 12:34 PM
damnit mike!! U are so speeding ahead !..Is ur clock damage? We got 2 months to go ..
Jealous at ur brilliant idea..First the Toilet flower ! Very sci-fi humurous piece!
then comes wif the Earth shattering..The most incredible..& i can admit der will be nothing to be so Great & depressive as looking our Living planet burst in the galaxy! What a Joyful experience! Really fit the Tittle exactly outstanding!
Too bad, u r choosing the Third one wif Latern~... U knw why i dun like ur choice!? CUZ I AM JEALOUS at ur Creative spinning head~!..Arghh..i haf to drill & grind another concept now after i check ur thread..I had spent quite a while having something similar to urs. gosh~!..
Keep it up the Chinese culture spirit! ...I will ask Zhang Er jie jie to give u a Good nite kiss tonite!
p/s: I got no comment at ur current pieces.. i want to spend my time check out other thread! Btw, u can draw a few Jumping & sporty Rabbit as tos Walkers pets or as part of the crowd. it might work out a quite spectacular scene..
Promise to return in ur post soon!
combine blue and green ones.
09-09-2005, 02:53 PM
Madwomen on lanterns - good idea!
Good luck !
09-09-2005, 02:55 PM
I love the lantern piece.. flying lanterns! How can you go wrong with that. :)
It reminds me of the lanterns that are drifted on rivers for people who passed away (I'm not sure what culture that's from), so it also has a sad air along with its beauty.
I would try to combine all three colors, each one has something special the other one doesn't, but not in the same place in the picture.
Good luck, not that you need it though! :D
09-09-2005, 03:06 PM
Ah yes, the laterns are looking great in colour, a lovely sense of quiet spectacular. I'd agree with aoisabaku, each colour brings something of it's own to the image, but in different places. I think the sky in the blue is lovely, but the browns of the rock face in the first are really nice, but then the green really makes the lights look inviting...
09-09-2005, 07:29 PM
They're all nice, but i think i like the first one the best. One of the things that I like about it is the hints of green in the sky that contrast with the red. Have you considerred going less monochromatic, making the sky one color and going with a different kind of hue for the froreground, maybe setting up a warm/cool thing going on? Anyhow just an idea. Looking great so far...!
09-09-2005, 07:35 PM
 crikey, I thought I was watching this thread!! I've missed so much, but spectacularly suprised. Gosh amazing work! Really beautiful lighting, I like the last on best I think. Your are fantastic!
:bounce: really beautiful idea. I look forward to seeing more from you!
09-09-2005, 07:42 PM
my sister and i vote nr 3...oh and its still crappy:D
09-09-2005, 07:45 PM
Great colours and mood.I like the third one.
Good luck :)
09-09-2005, 07:53 PM
09-09-2005, 09:21 PM
I like the green one the most (seems most people stay away from green). But maybe try what walrus suggested, just to see how it turns out. keep experimenting, you've got pletny of time.
09-10-2005, 04:48 AM
wow!very impressive work.:bounce: love it a lot.
09-10-2005, 02:57 PM
Loving the fast-paced progress your making. I like #3, the blue/purple one best. I think it is far more fitting for the mood I think the subject matter is trying to convey. Green would come second choice. Also, maybe the lanterns would look more luminous against the blue or green. Keep up the good work.
09-10-2005, 03:20 PM
Mmm well. The first image makes me wanna look at the top lanterns, i find the colours strong but quite flat. I agree with NinjaAssassin that the second one has the better overall balance. Both as colours and movement, but I don't like greens very much. I personally like the last one. It makes my eyes move to the right corner where the most detail should be.
I think the choiche depends on where you want the eyes of the viewer to go. Keep in mind that vilolet shades are the complementary of yellow. I think this is the reason most people like the third image: there is a nicer contrast between the setting and the lanterns.
Keep up with this amazing work!
09-10-2005, 04:06 PM
personally I like the first one the best and the second one second... however, I'd also be interrested in how it would look if you combined the two...like the sky of the second and the rocks and such of the first... i don't know, just an idea.
09-10-2005, 05:36 PM

"I think this is the reason most people like the third image: there is a nicer contrast between the setting and the lanterns."
09-10-2005, 06:03 PM
Really nice
Personally I think you should go by the second or the third choise.
09-10-2005, 06:26 PM
personally i like the center mood pic... the left and right just seem to be a little too far off the grid with their colors. great job on your work, looks incredible.
i love the middle color scheme too. It's not very monochromatic like the other ones.
09-10-2005, 08:28 PM
Dude! I'm cool :buttrock:if I could only swing my wacom as I use my tongue..... LOL
09-10-2005, 08:30 PM
hi~ they look pretty good :) good luck~
09-12-2005, 12:37 AM

hi everyone and i appologised for not updating for awhile,i was away on the weekends and came back last nite, was tired to continue but still i did alil tweaking on the colors due to all the comments given.:scream:
i'll follow up with all the replies each and everyone have commented, some of u here prefered the 1st,a few opt for the 2nd and quite a number go for the 3rd and even some of u suggested to combine the 2nd and the 3rd.lol,i'll try to play around and blend the 3 colors all together, though the overall might not turn out much difference.will go with the composition for now and i'll do the line art tonite.:)
a big thanks to everyone -beelow,matt,lync,linda,blaz,rudy,keko,nickolay,noob,dinodog,ranath,sergey,maya,sam,michael,enialadam,neb

09-12-2005, 03:18 AM
Hi there Michael, i like all those colour mood concepts. So it really comes down to the subjects and the story you wanted to convey. What are all those lanterns about by the way?
09-12-2005, 03:46 AM
I like the moods, i think that the red and the green are your best bet right now.
09-12-2005, 03:57 AM
hie jerome~i'll post the story of what the lantern is all about soon.i'll probably post it along with the line art:)thanks alot for the comments.

09-13-2005, 07:28 AM
Cool concept Sh@ke! :)
09-13-2005, 08:12 AM
Your concepts look great, as always! I expecially like the way you draw
faces: they look so natural, relaxed ... human!
nature: simple but yet detailed.
attitude: your images always bear a feeling with them
so...keep it up!
09-13-2005, 11:05 AM
wow Michael - you have a real potent submission here. The colors are awesome and I have nothing to crit so far or to suggest. Just leaning back and enjoy your progress :)
09-13-2005, 02:25 PM
Mike..the Latern character is a beautiful piece..
haha..i hope the candle's fire dun burn the latern paper..and get her ass on fire.. U will be in trouble!
Yeah.finally the eastern beauty arrive and bring this scene more spectacular.~
09-13-2005, 04:32 PM
Beautiful concept man. I love how you've got a character in focus, and how the image tells about this spectacular ritual they're performing in the scene. I'll be watchin' closely :)
09-13-2005, 04:37 PM
Another sketch, eh? Dang I was so lovin' the lanterns Idea! But, the new sketch seems cool, good luck with it! I'll check back, Lata!

pushav and xric - thanks both of u,i'll update tomorrow
09-14-2005, 06:37 PM
Hey, very nice work you got here so far. I'm definately digging the lanterns and the idea behind it. It feels like a folk tales or something that's been a tradition. very interesting. The journey idea seems cool too, but i'll wait for more.
well, i will keep up with your progress and goodluck. great start
09-15-2005, 05:52 AM
not much updates, went back very late last nite, thought of proceeding with the character concept but was too tired to continue~here i just tweak alil bit on the colors.will post more updates tomorrow:)thanks again.
arc80 - thank u for the support~just stay tuned
09-15-2005, 07:22 AM
very impressive!   love ur color and compo.keep it coming.cheers.
09-15-2005, 07:41 AM
Mike, this sketch is simply beautiful. Theres something that seems so incredibly moving about this sketch... the colors and lighting are just blowing me away. I actually like this one better than your most recent.
BTW, your pencil sketches areabsolutely beautiful as well. You have a way of capturing a scene even in its infantile stage that is so difficult to do, but you manage with ease. Even in the sketch stages, your work is some of my favorite that I have seen in cgtalk. - J
09-15-2005, 08:29 AM
really ,truelly spectaculer.great 2 see those stunning coloring.love the idea.good luck.
09-15-2005, 08:37 AM
Pfiiuuuu, that's really spectacular. Love the colours and the candles lights.
Good luck in the challenge :)
09-15-2005, 08:44 AM
Mecha Hate Chimp - thank u very much for the sweet comments~for now i'd probably stick the most recent concept, however i wont give up on the the earth shatering piece either~even if i have actually made up my mind on the lantern piece,i'll still be doing the earth shatering piece, one of these will be the judge in the final and the one that left out will be submited to the finished work gallery:)
all and all,i'm still at the very early stages,i've not even came out with a story solid enough to proceed with the challenge~i'll keep this going:thumbsup:
atanu and valerio - ur comments are very much appreciated:)thank u
09-15-2005, 08:53 AM
cool concept and nice atmosphere, loved those lantern coool.... keep it up dude!...
09-15-2005, 10:45 AM
Yes sir, looking totally awesome Mike!
Everything looks great man! I just love those floating lantarns, very mysterious and beautifull.
This is gonna rock! I just know it!
I'll be back, cheers mate!
09-15-2005, 12:34 PM
it still looks amazing!! cant wait for more!!:)
09-15-2005, 02:53 PM
I like both concepts...maybe also the first one a wee bit better but that´s more a personal preference. The latern artwork on the other hand is a high potential character-concept dealing very nice with the spectacular theme.
Your painting technique and the line-drawings are awesome.
09-15-2005, 06:51 PM
this is absolutely beautiful,
i loove the colors in the sky! im sure the final version is going to be gorgeous!
09-15-2005, 06:56 PM
really beautiful sketches :) i love the idea of the flying lights. do you intend to let them play some instruments? i think that would be a nice addition for the parade.
hope to see some updates soon
09-16-2005, 02:25 AM
digitalhadz - thanks alot mate!
Rudeone and calisto - thanks for the great support!:scream:
Fahrija - thank u for liking both the concepts,it took me quite sometime to decide which one to go.thanks again:)
Shramír - thank u and yes~thats what i'm aiming for!:scream:
Llynna - interesting idea~i'll see what i can do about it.instrument playing hasnt really come to my mind yet but i'll follow up with the sugestion of urs:)
09-16-2005, 02:31 AM
couldnt update much on the challenge as i was bz wih some other stuff, got home rather late recently, spend alil time to proceed with the lineart sketch last nite and here's how it goes:)
09-16-2005, 02:43 AM
Its getting clear and much expectation been build.
09-16-2005, 05:03 AM
I am loving the line art in this one, great stuff so far, I am waiting to see how you color work will turn out, c ya, micheal!
09-16-2005, 05:57 AM
skillz, your lineart works are just great ,fun to watch, just so good
so is this when the magical village pencils have been used to record the
village history for another year and they've become too cumbersome to be used,
because all that is written with them is stored in the pencils and cause
them to grow thicker and now the village historians must take the pencils to
the two holy men , one that lives near the stormy lake , who will extract the
knowledge stored in the pencils as layers of scrolls from around them, then
making the scrolls magically resistant against fire and water, and the one
that lives on the mountain peak that will cast the spell of strenght and sharpening,
to keep the pencils' edge for the coming year and to guard them against termites ?
09-16-2005, 07:11 AM
hi buddy,realty nice work so far.love u drawing a lot.
remind me of the northern region of my country, there is a national custom that people make the big flying lanterns and also make the beautiful floatable lanterns(for floating in the river) for Lord Bhudda worship in the 12th fullmoon night every year.
will keep my eyes on it.cheers.:bounce:
09-16-2005, 07:38 AM
i'm alil confused wether i should come back to this piece, both these concept seems to be potentially applicable to the spectacular theme, made some slight changes on the earth shattered piece .squibbit once shared some of his view to me and i thought,it was cool to apply some on it~might take away those ships and combine it with the lantern concept:)hehe, since we are all in early stages,so i'll just play alil bit.
09-16-2005, 07:45 AM
squibbit,beelow,xric - thank u:love:
squibbit - hehe i dont really get what u mean in ur reply~:scream:
xric - yeah, its base on actual fact, the fabric lanter, they light it up with helium gas and they go floating in the air for several hundred ft.thanks for the comments
09-16-2005, 07:56 AM
Michael, both concepts are cool but I think the shattered earth one is much more appropriate for the spectacular challenge. The lantern one is spectacular in his own way (depicts a wonderful event) but it's too quiet in my opinion. Spectacular has to be fast, furious, contrasty and ...well...earth-shattering. Just like in this last sketch.
09-16-2005, 08:08 AM
yeah i agree with Xillion, the shattered earth is more appropriate for the challenge!
but i know that whichever you choose you will make it look spectacular!!i personally like both of them, and i really love the way its drawn! cheers!:applause: :D
09-16-2005, 08:12 AM
squibbit - hehe i dont really get what u mean in ur reply~:scream:
riiight, like those things they're carrying on their backs don't look like very big, short pencils?
09-16-2005, 08:39 AM
I like both ideas.. Though i think shattered earth is more spectacular. It reminds me of final fantasy VII when they try to blow up meteor and everyones watching.
I say go with "shattered earth"!
09-16-2005, 09:45 AM
just spend a few minutes just now, sketch it down with pencils and scanned in.played around with a new composition and tried combining both the concepts together.:)
09-16-2005, 10:04 AM
wow, that´s it! what adds the spectacular thing.
combining this traditional ceremony with some eycatching sci-fi elements.
i´ve got the mood of the first sketch in mind yet. and i like the theme very much.
but it felt too peaceful than spectacular. keep going this way...
09-16-2005, 12:02 PM
Oh wow Michael, this gave me goosebumps! The conmbination of sci fi and tradition is really lovely, and also tells moe of a story, like this ceremony is to give a final farewell to the planet thats been shattered. Really can't wait to see how this comes on.
Ooh, I just noticed all the lovely detail in the building too... wow, so much to see in this!
09-16-2005, 12:07 PM
spot on!
this makes for an AWESOME lighting situation.
09-16-2005, 12:11 PM
wow!love ur latest sketch!!truely spectacular!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
09-16-2005, 12:11 PM
Ah yes, very good choice Mike!
09-16-2005, 12:19 PM
Brilliant, looking forward to this one :)
09-16-2005, 01:37 PM
How fast you´ve established the new shot - dude, you know how to draw characters.
Very good progress regarding the composition. Everything´s in there. Buildings, environments, people in the foreground and a lot of different things that can be designed....but don´t forget> the painted version (lightning, textures) has to lead the viewers eye to the important/storytelling things of the image due to the amount of stuff going on.
09-16-2005, 01:47 PM
i feel very proud of ur spectacular idea..
NO WORDS! ONLY TEARS ROLLING OUT THRU MY STUPID EYES NOW.. come wipe away the tears for me , mike....
I am really into this Sci-fi Eastern art!
(I told u..u gotta draw lady to boost up ur wildly imagination...haha)
09-16-2005, 02:31 PM
Wow, your drawings are really great. I love the concept. I love the mix of hard sci-fi and traditional asian elements. I'm looking forward to how this turns out
09-16-2005, 02:39 PM
very interesting concept and interesting mix between both. The lights promise very spectacular in this composition and perspective looks very interesting on the sketch... :wip:
09-16-2005, 08:26 PM
Your quick with that pencil! I was actually wondering if you were goign to combine the two. Now it's time to get some color into this skecth:thumbsup: .
09-16-2005, 08:50 PM
That is the one, do that one that is a definite!:bounce:
09-17-2005, 09:34 AM
comaone - thanks mate~yeah,i think ur right,i'll keep playing with the comp:)
sam - thank u for the lovely comments~
Kyena - thanks tasha~i'm still playing with the colors,or maybe i might reused the color i had in the lantern piece~i'll see how thing goes :)
xric7,rudy,Baron Impossible - thanks alot!:scream:u guys have been a great support
Fahrija - u r right~yeah, gotta focus more on the main elements,no worries,i'll be experimenting still.
dinodog - lol, haha,u've been exeggerating and thank u for the replies:)hehe, might not go with much ladies this time~:D
zpapageo,jddog - thanks alot both of u~
james - yeah,i'll post the color sketch soon, yup, since i already had the idea in my mind, putting down into sketch wouldnt take long though:)
beelow - thanks mate~haha, yeah i'd probably go with the current concept but wether to go with the sketch or not,i'm still developing and improving the composition, havent really decide the colors too
09-17-2005, 10:06 AM
I really like your sketches. Very nice composition, i look forward to seeing more! Good luck
09-17-2005, 10:25 AM
just alil update, play around with a new composition, tilt the angle alil lower though, the colors are very roughmso bare with it :)hehe.it took me 30 mintues for the sketch.no scanner at home so i sketched it right away in ps
thanks again guys
09-17-2005, 10:26 AM
Sh@ke, amazing work. This is going to be so beautiful when it's finished, spectacular indeed. Wonderful work :)
09-17-2005, 10:51 AM
i am goin to spread a virus to destroy all wacom tablet drivers !
u guys watch out for dat! esp u, mike. u r the first victim!
everyone is goin back to the ancient dark days soon...
Mike...cut off ur net now..
09-17-2005, 11:20 AM
Yo Mike...great work. I love the sketch above with the women and the giant lanterns. Potent stuff! As for this last sketch, my suggestion would be to tilt the camera less and make the top vanishing lines' angle more accute as if it were a wider lens. Rock on!
09-17-2005, 12:27 PM
Hmm... The previous line sketch was amazing, but the new colour sketch, to be brutally honest, is disappointing. The colours are fine, I'm talking more about the content. Your line sketch is truly magical, epic and inspiring, one of the best compositions I've ever seen, but your colour sketch is cramped and humdrum and all that magic has been lost. Sorry to be harsh, but that's what crits are for after all :)
09-17-2005, 03:02 PM
What a cool colour concept there. I am curious to see how the whole lantern thing becomes an icon for the future.
Keep going, Mike
09-17-2005, 03:14 PM
I dont know why when we heard "spectacular" 90% of us have thought at destruction,cataclism...why isnt peace?...somth that clean ur mind when ur look at it...somth calm.! Good luck!
09-17-2005, 03:33 PM
This concept just kicks ass. ;) I don't see anything here what i can write my comment about ;). Perfect.
09-17-2005, 03:46 PM
enialadam - thank u very much
dinodog - love ur jokes~thanks
andreasrocha - yeah, probably~i'd probably alter the angles again:)thanks alot for the comments and the suggestion:)
baron impossible - thanks alot mate~ur comments are greatly appreciated,u were right about the composition~i had that feelings too,i wanna thank u again for pointing that out and will be follow up with ur crits.i'll re sketch the version and maybe have alteration alil here and there on the composition.no problem with the crits at all, infact i'm honoured:)
jerome - thanks alot~hehe,could be~:scream:
ginoshu - thank u for the comments, hmm, its probably a mindset, most of the people would think of that on the 1st impression, yes u are right about why isnt it peace for the theme spectacular, somehow its a very subjective matter when it comes to this.for now, what i have here would seems to be destructive, but at the same time,i'm heading for peaceful elements,i hope that works out fine:)thanks again for the reply
09-17-2005, 03:54 PM
pawlack - thanks mate~its been concluded that this would be the concept and the theme that i'm heading for, however ,as a matter of how it looks,i'm still altering the composition as well as the colors.just bare with me for alil bit:)i'll do my best
09-17-2005, 04:19 PM
Beautiful colors. I love the feel of the architechture. I cant wait to see how this comes out
09-17-2005, 04:50 PM
The composition of the previous line drawing was very good! It had the right mixture between space/room and content. I´m a bit surprised you´ve changed it. I hope you give the previous composition a try. I think with the previous one you are ready to go the next step and just finish it. I agree with Simon. You nailed it allready.
09-17-2005, 05:00 PM
zpapageo - thanks but its due to change~lol,i'll keep it coming~might not be able to update tomorrow, probably on monday:)
Fahrija - no worries,it was only a sketch and yeah,i agreed with what baron said too, thats why i'm gonna change it,probably focus on the previous piece, thank u for sharing ur oppinion:)
09-17-2005, 05:49 PM
that looks really nice... lighting and angle works.. spectacular!
09-17-2005, 08:51 PM
Micheal! Good to see you here! I only knew bout the challenge few days back and I was actually really looking for your entry coz your M&S entry was great.
I think the combination of the two concept give it emotional contrast on the foreground and at the background, a spectacular event is taking place. I think the mix can only be better.
Great effort doode...im subscribing to this one.
09-18-2005, 12:18 AM
Interesting new sketch. I am still in love with the lanterns, Do the Lanterns man! Holla!
09-18-2005, 03:29 AM
totally agree with Mr. Beelow on this, the other one is breath taking, and dude I'm a guy I don't say this to often
it has that magic and mood that it's hard to find :wip:
WOW. very nice update. I love all your sketchs and I like the color and atmosphere in a newest one.Great job! looking forward to see more:thumbsup:
09-18-2005, 05:13 PM
I pretty much agree... that last sketch is tremendous. Im specifically drawn to the angle you used... its just soo nice.
09-19-2005, 02:08 AM

Korline - yeah, thank u ~i'll keep playing with the composition of the other one~the current piece seems alil too packed and cramped:scream:
keko - thank u:)more to come~
Mecha Hate Chimp - thank u mecha~i'll see how it goes, will be playing around on the composition from the sketch before this and keep this angle for future use:)
sacha - thank u my friend,welcome back!i'm looking forward to urs.:D
09-19-2005, 03:17 AM
yo, my wrist hurts looking at that, but you keep it going
my favorite is with the lamps anyway ur awsome
09-19-2005, 07:09 AM
nice job mate, i really like the angle and the used of colors. keep it up! :)
09-19-2005, 07:17 AM
hie guys~i re sketch again the composition based on the sketch on page 13 which some of u mention about the magical feel to it and i try to remain it here.thanks again people~
korline and digitalhadz.many thanks to both of u:)
09-19-2005, 07:29 AM
that´s magical.
09-19-2005, 12:34 PM
lovely.... I really like the way u r discovering that theme
09-19-2005, 12:43 PM
Whoa...an annual outer space lattern fest in time for earth destruction day! I think its gonna give a funny feeling....as if the strolling people knew and act normally to the day earth shatters....unless the earth debris has been floating there for centuries and then the fest takes place...hmmm..thats i think sounds reasonable.....
Anyway...just my 2 cents worth.....color it!:bounce:
09-19-2005, 10:30 PM
Now, that's hot I like that you are incorporating you old shattered planet theme with lanterns theme together, nice touch!:scream:
09-20-2005, 01:34 AM
fahrija - thanks mate~
blaz - thanks alot buddy!
maranello55 - hie there~thanks for the reply,
unless the earth debris has been floating there for centuries and then the fest takes place...hmmm..thats i think sounds reasonable.....
thats what its all about~hehe, its shattered, not shattering:)sorry to have u confused about the idea of this,i'll write up a story soon.probably when i post the line art.thanks again:scream:
beelow - yeah, thanks alot mate~i'll post another one soon:)
09-20-2005, 06:43 AM
made another sketch just now~haha, gotta be really cautious when i do this as i'm working in office~a 15minutes sketch,so bare with me coz its rather rough:)thanks again guys.
09-20-2005, 07:05 AM
This one is awesome friend, I like it alote.
09-20-2005, 07:31 AM
Beautiful lineart Sh@ke, you have some great skills! :)
09-20-2005, 09:17 AM
Wow! That's a realy fast sketch!! Incredible point of view. This one is my favourite! :applause:
09-20-2005, 09:25 AM
What should I say. Great skills, dude. the camera angle is even better than in the previous one and the architecture fits also much better.
How big is this line drawing? > has it thumbnail size? I mean how do you hide it in the office? :)
I´m really looking forward to watch the coloring/rendering process. Will be very interesting.
09-20-2005, 09:56 AM

I think this twisted camera angle fits for this shot. Ofcouse as you said, it's just a 15 min. sketch, but I think that it misses some foreground elements. Or perhaps I've just watched too much Feng Zhu's gnomon videos :D

Great perxpective. Nice flow. Now you have a focal point in the whole composition. and nice latterns gradually pointing the way.....marvellous.
That is truly excellent! And to think it is just a quick sketch! I wish I could do quick sketches like yours. I am really enjoying watching your progress.

Mike, ur sketches & pespective imagination is really impressed me.. 15mins..My paper only goin to haf some silly scribbles!
i like how u sketch out both pieces (ya, the stairs) it gives a little Artsy..hee. It give readers a feel where is this festival towards to their tail's path of the parade.
Well, Der are alot laterns flying in the air.
Somehow we can't focus where are tos latern flyin up from. (Maybe every corners in the rural neighbourhood) So, stairs could be a good indicator to let us imagine that peoples are walking on thousands stairs to the top of the hill and let go their Latern of Bliss. Good insight.
(Maybe when u painting u can try to provide another small focal point on the mountain peak to let us knw Der is the latern gathering up der...such as ppl let their laterns off up der as the last celebration act in this parade)
Cool concept, loving the sketch already.. :)

that last one is great as well, but it seems that is falling to the right.. I think u should change the moon direction from right to the left... than it would be better balanced and more effective I think. keep up the great work man! :)
