just 40 mins or so of doodling around in 3d so far.

And some not-very-elucidating sketches.

I haven't had much spare time since the start of the competition, and I'm not sure how much spare time I'm going to have before it ends. So, I'm going to have to pull back the complexity of what I was first imagining.... basically its a giant figure, but now I'll probably just do the head, and I'll avoid building much of an environment.

11-08-2005, 07:37 AM

This is (kind of) what I'm thinking of right now, I'll probably have to simplify thing even more by focusing on the face, and leaving out much of the environment.

Looks like thats the end of my time to work on this, 3 days isn't enough.. :(
I might be able to come up with something if I sacrifice every weekend and evening till the deadline.

11-11-2005, 09:34 AM
Oh - this is just great work! The clouds are to dream about... like a Renaissance painting - awesome

Wow cool updates, i love the colours in the clouds and the the unique idea you got, always got nice subtle details, i like the way it going, i totally agree that it's had to find time i hope you can finish though, good luck:thumbsup:

11-14-2005, 06:29 AM
Incredible clouds mate... no words to describe my feeling front of them... just speechless... I adore :applause:

just if you can to explain more about their realization will be kind... very interested by that :wip:

11-14-2005, 07:54 AM

Re. making the clouds:
Some of this is probably specific to max....
I started with blobby metaparticles, and I used a plugin called "mesher" to turn this into a mesh, which I then displaced with a procedural cellular map. To get the clouds nice and puffy I actually displaced them twice with the same map. I rendered the clouds in vray with glossy refraction, and a very bright environment. I had a little bit of fog turned on in the vray material, so the clouds are darker where they have more thickness. I rendered a seperate pass for depth, and an extra pass for soft diffuse lighting, then composited together in digital fusion.
That probably makes no sense to anyone but me...:p...sorry. If you want I can explain some more specifics.

11-14-2005, 08:38 AM
The same way is not very easy with other software... but I understand well the global idea and the realization... thanks for explanation Greg... that works very good for me

11-14-2005, 10:24 AM
I like it a lot, very nice pyro effects, good work.

11-14-2005, 11:42 AM
Stunning start! and cheers for the explaination:thumbsup: Good luck battling the clock;)

11-14-2005, 12:32 PM
Great job is coming !

11-14-2005, 02:38 PM
Just WOW !!!

11-14-2005, 02:59 PM
Those clouds look really sweet. Nice light distribution and volume. You mind if I ask how you did them?

11-18-2005, 03:15 AM
Wow, truly amazing effect you have there on the clouds. SSS ?

11-18-2005, 06:59 PM
just a quick test

WoW, It looks fantastic, mabye best 3D clouds I ever seen. Yours skills are very great!
Keep working! :applause:

11-18-2005, 08:15 PM
Nice work man... good technique for the clouds:thumbsup:

11-22-2005, 11:26 AM
Hi, I really like what you have done for your cloud, wondering how did you do that? and what software did you use? cheers mate.

11-22-2005, 12:08 PM
alvin_cgi, DaddyMack, gpepper, MadnesS, RyanKingwood, dvelasco, rawwad, Maxter, & alvin_cgi, many thanks.
The clouds are rendered with vray, I didn't use vray translucency, but rather blurry refraction, with the IOR set to 1.0, and a bit of absorption (fog). See here (http://www.richardrosenman.com/vray_absorption_tutorial.htm) for a tutorial about some of this stuff.

I have a horrible sinking feeling that my entry is going to turn out to be unspeakably pretentious...... I hope not.
This is a mockup, the foreground is just pasted together from opengl screen captures, but the clouds and horizon are quite finished.

11-23-2005, 01:50 PM
That's fine, I like pretention!

11-23-2005, 02:05 PM
I have a horrible sinking feeling that my entry is going to turn out to be unspeakably pretentious...... I hope not.

Hehe, I can already hear the angelic choir singing loudly as the sky opens :D

Nah, seriously, it looks good, and the clouds seem particularly cool to me - realistic yet unrealistic at the same time, all in all it gives me some sort of modernised renaissance feel... which is pretty neat.

A few tweaks and fixes yet to go, but this will basically be what I come up with, I think...

12-01-2005, 01:08 PM
It's breathtaking! My heart is binbin......haha:buttrock:

12-01-2005, 01:22 PM
Wow I missed such great thread!! I love the style of your image . I think you only need to work on the sky & rays from it -rest is perfect. I wish you good luck

I love this piece and your work...makes me think of Odd Nerdrum + Giger. Great artistic sensibility!

I don't know quite what to say about the story of this picture; I'm not even particularly happy with how it turned out. I've been very busy with work, and I've not really had the time to do as much as I first imagined.
Many, many ideas have gone into the picture; but I'd prefer to let the picture speak for itself than to rave on about concepts that are most likely barly apparent in the final image. Essentially I meant it to be cathartic; and to me it does feel very cathartic and personal, hopefully its not too personal to be of any interest to anyone else.

craig simmons (member.php?u=131250), JamesMK (member.php?u=27885), Dbeyond (member.php?u=188312), thanks.
immortalx (member.php?u=192598), Yeah, its pretty nice here, but a bit hot at the moment.
the_fgdf (member.php?u=143261), 3d-empire (member.php?u=79888), the sky seems a bit empty to me, perhaps I'll add something in there, or do some more colour correcting. The rays probably should be longer, but I don't want them to be too distracting.
gwhite206 (member.php?u=123124), cheers.
Rebeccak (member.php?u=148587), Thanks very much. Wow, I'd never heard of Odd Nerdrum, his work looks awsome. The picture was definatly heavily inspires by many artists, particularly Beksinski (a pinting of his featuring what looks like a giant bath tub inspired the look of the sky), and Rodin (his croutching woman, hand of god, etc.).

12-02-2005, 09:10 AM
Very interesting concept and beautiful image, like the colors a lot.
Maybe too much falloff for the skin shader.

12-02-2005, 11:03 AM
Great! My favorite image.

12-02-2005, 11:14 AM
Wow, I really love your picture. Very personnal and artistic I think. Maybe one of my favorite arround here:thumbsup: Great good giant spectacular work:)

12-02-2005, 12:33 PM
I've uploaded the full resolution image for anyone interested. Be warned, it is VERY big, (3500*5600 pixels, 1.78 MB)
Get it here:

very nice work.I like the range of colors:)

12-02-2005, 01:45 PM
Greg... I've just watching the hi-res picture... and it's really a great pleasure to discover at this size all these incredibles small but perfect details....

CONGRATULATIONS... you can be proud of your quality, your subject, and your result...

...a result disturbing, but SPECTACULAR of course

12-02-2005, 02:21 PM
 that' s a wonderful piece~ love the body modell and the color~ good luck~Greg:scream:

12-02-2005, 02:29 PM
I like the image however the sky needs more work but as you said it's probably because you have no more time to dedicate to it. Somehow I feel like I've seen something like that before... weird.

12-02-2005, 02:31 PM
I've no words... I watching and I find it a very interesting work, really strong image. :applause: the sky is wonderful !

12-02-2005, 10:44 PM
Thanks guys. Its interesting that so many people suggest I work on the sky; I've been looking at it long enough to lose objectivity, could someone give any more specific crits or ideas on how I could improve the sky? There may still be time for some final tweaks.

12-02-2005, 11:28 PM
Well the clouds don't really look like clouds, they are too blobby. The little blobs are too well defined making a recognizable pattern, looks more like billowing smoke, maybe a pass with the nudge and blur tool would help. Stormy clouds tend to have a "flat" bottom as in this sample.

clouds (http://www.groovyadventures.com/albums/Poland-Photos/sztorm.sized.jpg)

hope that helps.

12-03-2005, 12:40 AM
This image is very pleasing to see - think I'll print out the big version and stick it on my wall. It really is stunning art! The clouds may be unrealistic, but they look in-place. Details are great too.

Good work and you're definedly amougnst my favorites in this challenge :)

12-03-2005, 04:59 PM
Wonderful work - and I love that sky! Don't change it - it's stunning as it is

Good luck with the jury!

12-03-2005, 05:11 PM

Someone had shown me this site before, it was awesome! But I didn't recall the name of the artist, so thanks!

I'll be adding this to the Favorite Figurative Artists - Links (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=282224&highlight=Favorite+Artists) in the Anatomy Forum. :)

12-03-2005, 06:44 PM
On full size one can see the power of this image. Awasome details .like I said one of my favorites. Good luck with jury!! ( The sky is ok now nothing to add - perfect mood) -beer men!!

12-04-2005, 12:39 AM
Oh my, Greg, didn't even see you continued working on the challenge until now:o

totally amazing picture man... the light... the sense of scale, colors... details.. and the whole is just great. Good job!

12-04-2005, 09:48 AM
Vary good work. I like the technique & Clouds( tha looks Like inside body).

I saw 2 pages works & your work is best on those pages.( at least you r best in 2 pages for me).

http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/11/7770/7770_1133768509_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/11/7770/7770_1133768509_large.jpg)

A quick attempt at making the picture a bit more interesting:

12-05-2005, 07:51 AM
http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/11/7770/7770_1133769114_medium.jpg (http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/entries/11/7770/7770_1133769114_large.jpg)

My thoughts on the story/descripotion are pretty much already covered in the last "final image" submission.
The empty space in the sky bothered me, and I was looking for last minute ways of making the picture a bit more interesting, so I made this addition:

12-05-2005, 08:00 AM
And I've uploaded the new super high rez image here:
http://www.users.on.net/~gjpetch/spec_challenge/spec_cmp02.jpg (http://www.users.on.net/%7Egjpetch/spec_challenge/spec_cmp02.jpg)

12-05-2005, 08:00 AM
Haunting surrealism mate;) Love the palette and the overall atmosphere you've achieved...

Rock on Greg!:buttrock:

12-05-2005, 08:04 AM
Nice finishing... new addition increase again much more your masterpiece impact... just more that perfect... SPECTACULAR then...

If it's really the end and the final pic... CONGRATULATIONS and BEST WISHES with judging

12-05-2005, 04:28 PM
I hate you.... its a joke friend, this is outstanding, simply a masterpiece, well done.

PS: Im surprised

12-05-2005, 05:12 PM
Brrr I generally don`t like this kind of mood but I admire your technique and imagination... great work

Good luck for the final voting :bounce:

12-06-2005, 06:39 AM
SNoWs (member.php?u=62565), I agree about the clouds, I don't mind too much though because I actually wanted a slightly unnatural, cloud tank type look. But, they do look much more uniform and blobby than I would have liked. I've already broken up the edges of the clouds vey slightly by mapping the rendered image onto particles and then moving the particles a bit; this helped soften them, but yeah, they could probably do with a bit more breaking up.

The Parrot (member.php?u=69507), Thanks man, if you do print out a big version then send me a photo, I'd like to see how it looks.

Gunilla (member.php?u=78228), thanks.

Rebeccak (member.php?u=148587), your welcome, Beksinskis work is awsome.

the_fgdf (member.php?u=143261), thanks very much.

m@. (member.php?u=8074), I keep expecting people to tell me they hate the picture, so its nice to get such kind compliments, thanks man.

bahman (member.php?u=76939), It never occurred to me that the clouds look like the inside of a body, but your right......gross! Thanks man.

DaddyMack (member.php?u=85530), cheers man, "haunting surrealism" is definatly what I was after.

Lemog (member.php?u=60815), thanks again.

ilusiondigital (member.php?u=155104), Hehe, thanks very much.

Nomad (member.php?u=8750), I knowingly made a picture that isn't very palatable; I don't even like its mood very much myself, so I don't blame you at all.

12-06-2005, 06:54 AM
Amazing feeling around this picture ! This strange birth is puzzling us !
We love it or we hate it, maybe both, but the most important is that this picture makes us feel something !
Great job Greg, again !
The highres let us know the cool work and all the details you've done.

12-06-2005, 11:14 AM
Hi Greg, its a really beautiful peice...I am just not sure if the addition off the egg was too much. The fetal pose which you have the girl in and the expressiveness says a lot to start with, before you had the egg in their I had thought that it was symbolising some kind of birth. The egg though it looks nice I think offsets the composition I would have thought maybe the egg could be shattered around the hands and running down them... I still really love this one, i guess it just makes me think more... WHICH ISNT A BAD THING! :D

Nice work!

12-06-2005, 11:58 AM
Viva Dal!:p hehe, good job and good luck to you!!

12-07-2005, 02:38 AM

that is totally tripped out and beautiful...

very spectacular :wise:

12-13-2005, 02:29 PM
I simply have to ask about your light & shaders setup ;). Everything has a certain look, i'm curious about how you achieved that.

12-13-2005, 10:09 PM
azazel, the lighting comes from vray area lights, plus a HDRI map. The shading on the figure comes from a vray material with glossy fresnel reflections. The look also comes from the post work, I adjusted the color curves, so the hue is slightly different in the shadows and the highlights. Finally, some grain and offseting the green channel by a few pixels gives a subtle photographic quality.

I wasn't even aware you were competing in this challenge Greg, M@ just told me.

Just wanna let you know how impressed I am, this is the best entry I've seen in a lot of challenges.

Excellent work.
