View Full Version : LW animation and technique question

Hey guys, here's a scene from my senior thesis project, "Planet of the Grapes" (you can see another thread that follows the slow creation of it, that I started at the beginning of last summer, follow the link in my signature.)

click on

anyways, this is only part of a 15-20 sec short/mock movie trailer that I'm working on. Well, at the end of it, I'd like this to happen:

Two grapes stand in a dim hall, one holding a flashlight of some sort. The grape with the flashlight presses the light against his friend's stomach, the light passes through the grape's skin into his body, illuminating the silhouette of two seeds, "Hey, I can see your seeds!" "Dude! Come ON!" and etc.

Problem... I'm not exactly sure how to go about doing this. I'm stuck on the part when the flashlight is pressed into the skin, how do I make it look as if light passes through skin and illuminates his insides? I was thinking about a morph target, or putting an envelope on luminosity and the color map, and maybe that way. I know this involves translucency (sp?) in some way, but man, I just can't seem to put all this together.

This is sort of an extra scene that I'm throwing at the end of it, for comic effect, and not abosolutely necessary, but I think it's funny and would add another gag to the trailer. In other words, if somebody knows how to do this, hell yeah, game on, if not, there's other things I should be doing. (does that make sense?)

Well, that's it, have at it, no suggestion is out of bounds here.

PS crits on the animation are also welcome by the way

G2 is,(for my money), the wat to go! You get so much more than sss, I just don't care to list them all.

Do a search for "Ska" on's quicker than OGO's sss plugin.

thanks guys, I'm looking at all of them, though I know I don't have the money for G2 at the moment, maybe soon... when I get that huge animating job that pays me tons and tons of cash.;)

thanks again though,

You might be able to fake the effect using gradients in the translucency channel and maybe others
