I'm loving the textures! Punch up the skintones with some reds/oranges and perhaps subtle greens/blues.

Very nice, what kind of brushes to you usually use?

Really nice, I like the canvas texture and brush strokes too. Really looks like an oil painting. Great atmospheric lighting.

I like it. I really dig the small black figures also. Very simple line work but it is so effective.

You used painter didn't you (if not wow, just wow). Even if you did wow! It's awesome, I wish I could paint like that.

Edit: Oops I see now that you did use painter.

Magic Man, those sketches are beautiful. They are so loose and suggestive, yet very descriptive. Very cool work.

Concerning the painting, I find the white fabric around his waist competes with the head, which I don't think you want that to happen. In fact the value intensity is actually higher then the intensity of the sun. In fact, with the sun directly behind him, it would be sensible to subdue the front of his body and just have it silouette (spelling??) with the same value and color from the sun. If you decide to lower the front value, gray your colors a bit and define shapes more through temperatures than stark values. As result, I think it would be a more effective piece.

Just my 2cents.

Great work.

Whoa! You know what you're doing with that brush. I love those sketches. So suggestive and elegant.

After them though, the more finished work is falling a little flat. I think it looks like the sense of proportion is lost or maybe it's the added detail or maybe the fact that they feel too soft overall? Or perhaps that the color's not knocking me out like those stark black and white images are. I know - that's not particularly helpful.

I'd try to somehow keep that crispness and drama in the more finished works and perhaps keep the palette limited, focusing more on the graphic appeal of the figures.

I think a japanese brush pen is like an ink pen with a brush tip. As in not on the computer. :)

And amazing sketches! But I think I liked the first Painter version better than the second. The new one looked more.. plastic?

what,so he uses an actual pen and scanned it in?

tell me magic man!!! reminds me of metal gear solid art.

Hah, noob, these are the pens I use - brand is Tombow, but made in Japan you can find em in art stores.

Has a dual nib, one hard and one soft brush end.
