View Full Version : Maya vs XSI: Poly Face - Duplicating Edges

08 August 2005, 04:22 AM
Hi All,

I am an XSI modeler, now attempting to learn Maya modeling methods/tools, etc.

I have run across a problem/question.
When I create a single poly face, and duplicate the edge, thus translating the new edge in a different position ...
in XSI: two faces are created, maintaining the original one object
in Maya: a new polygon is created, BUT now becomes a separate object

Is there a way to be able to create the same XSI method - to Maya?

Also, how do I unselect/stop a control (example: editPoly>Split Poly Tool),
when an object is selected?
In XSI, it is ESC ... how do we do the same in Maya?

I appreciate any feedback.

I think for your first answer, you either need to do a) go to Polygons > Tool Options > Keep Faces Together (turn it on), or b) are you using the Extrude Edge command in the Edit Polygons menu?

Esc should work, or just switch tool, or if you want to be in the tool but restart your split, hit delete a few times. Though I think ESC should work.

EDIT: Nope, esc doesn't work. As far as I can tell, you can only hit delete a few times.. or do the split and undo :[

Actually, XSI's equivalent of duplicating a face, is Extrude Face.

So, as I was pulling out my hair, last night ... I found an icon on the top toolbar that performs exactly what I want. I found that when I select an edge, I must not duplicate the edge, but just click the icon and drag the edge. This works.

Now I just need to find where this tool is in the actual interface.

Thanks for your help, my friend!

I feel more confident in what I can achieve, in this program now.
