View Full Version : how to do subsurface scattering in MR for Maya 1.5 / maya 4.5 correctly?

Hi there :)

I just tried to get subsurface scattering to work (maya 4.5 / mental ray for maya 1.5) thinking: "haha! piece of cake! just drag translucence to something else than 0.0 and there ya go".

sadly, I bombed while trying this.

here's my setup:

GI switched on
FG switched on

skydome, one spotlight (emit photons on, area light rectangle) behind a sphere with a lambert (translucence set to about 0.5, t-depth to 0.5).

and: nothing happens. I thought I would see a similar effect to ice or skin with the light shining through the thinner parts... but no chance.

any1 able to explain how to set this up right?

I'm not sure wheter MR supports subsurface scattering, couldn't find any clues on the page or in the specs.
Do you think of Renderman instead? Or am i wrong?

as far as my research has come, one needs to write a custom shader for this.

I will try to write one in the following days...
perhaps it all turns out to be easily possible.
dunno yet; I've never written a shader for mental ray.
