I just tried to get subsurface scattering to work (maya 4.5 / mental ray for maya 1.5) thinking: "haha! piece of cake! just drag translucence to something else than 0.0 and there ya go".
sadly, I bombed while trying this.
here's my setup:
GI switched on
FG switched on
skydome, one spotlight (emit photons on, area light rectangle) behind a sphere with a lambert (translucence set to about 0.5, t-depth to 0.5).
and: nothing happens. I thought I would see a similar effect to ice or skin with the light shining through the thinner parts... but no chance.
any1 able to explain how to set this up right?
