Hey! I'll see how far I can go with this, so much todo, so little time, but hopefully I'll have time todo much more ;)

So it ends at last, I've finished it (at least I thinks it's finished :P)
So the results of using Photoshop, Maya, Premiere and vue can be seen on page 3 of this thread or go to the official final entry thread, good luck everyone ;)

So far I'm doing some tests/images to see were I want to go:

looking good, I really like the clouds and atmosphere.

07 July 2005, 05:17 PM
hey that looks superb! (best mattepainting entry i've seen so far ;) )

good luck! :)

07 July 2005, 07:25 PM
thx alot!Here comes a small animation/blizzard test ;)

EDIT: Removed due to the busy/slow host, will update with new link soon

The matte painting is really nice. Only thing that is still looking a little bit strange imo, is the area between the clouds and the city.

thx :)

Yes, I know about the clouds/city area, it's not yet the final output, I'll work more with everything, that includes the haze between the city and the clouds, plus I'll see if I want another sky aswell, will play around a bit ;)

anyone have any comments on the animation/movie? the movie will also be going through some changes soon

07 July 2005, 09:37 PM
The animations fileszie is a little to big. It is downloading with 2,3 KB´s. Could you maybe make a little smaller sample?

07 July 2005, 11:36 PM
The snow in the animation looks very good except it does not look like a blizzard, it looks more like a peaceful snow shower. Maybe if you increase the speed and turbulance of the snow you will achieve a more blizzard like effect if that's what you are shooting for.

yes, that will be fixed as soon as I get home, I'll upload the movie to my own isp host so it will be really fast, stay tuned ;)

And about the falling snow, I know that it's calm, I have yet to try with an turbulent blizzard, will play with that aswell when I get home

updates comming soon
EDIT: Now how come I didn't even mentioned that I'm going to freeze Stockholm down? hehe :D

Here the test animation on a new and fast server:

comments would be nice although I'll be making some changes soon

Crap. Another great entry. I'm double dead now :)

Ok some crits, but I'm just making your entry harder to beat!

I don't like the way the snow starts into the animation. It looks like it's only snowing in the foreground. The angle the snow is falling at doesn't match the perspective of the shot. It should be falling into the scene, and not towards the camera.

Your fog line in the distance of the city doesn't seem to match well with the fog line on the horizon with the clouds. You can see a seam across the top of the city where the city ends and the clouds start.

You need something else happening in the background. For example; Try having your clouds slowly drifting to the left to give the scene some depth, and performance.

If you feel like you can handle it, then add some sun beams drifting across the city. (keep it simple).

08 August 2005, 06:40 PM
thx alot, really nice to hear ;)

I know about some of the issues and I've fixed some already, but the one thing I'll give some time is the damn snow which I'll try to create in maya and the composite so I get the movement I need and not just infront of the camera as you said ;)

I'm also going to start shot another scene with the camera tomorrow hopefully, the idea is to film the sky and the pan downwards to the ground, in the middle a leaf/drop will fall which will evetually freeze, so I'll get started soon and post when I get time ;)

08 August 2005, 07:33 PM
Ok, I´ve seen it now.

The overall particle flow is looking good far, but as mustan9 mentioned, it doesn´t fit in the current perspective now.

08 August 2005, 08:48 PM
here comes a small animation test again with the snow, I did it quite fast so I'll tweak it tomorrow, I have a few emitter and I'll place them on the sides aswell so it's not so flat ;)

Any better? Placed an emitter to blow infront of cam

08 August 2005, 08:58 PM
That looks a lot better. I like the motion of the snow.

Crits: I wonder with a camera focusing at that distance if it would see snow that close. The snow you have in the background looks more real, but the fast moving snow up close should be much more out of focus.

Crits: Maybe this is part of your storyboard, but it really looks fake when the snow is starting to form. Once it's a full blown snow fall it's ok, but maybe you should just have it completely snowing from the first frame.

Now if I could only find some time to work on my entry :)

08 August 2005, 06:12 AM
thx ;)

that's without much motionblur, which will be added aswell, just didn't have time in the beginning, and about the snow forming up, that just the emitters "emitting" particles, I will exclude that from the final movie, it will be fully snowy all the time so don't worry ;)

hehe, would be nice to work with someone but my time doesn't allow me todo all tomuch right now so I'll do my best to make sure I make it till the end :)

08 August 2005, 05:46 PM
well, here's an small freeze down test on a simple cube:

08 August 2005, 07:08 PM
First of all, that mattepainting is really cool! Looks very interesting!

well, here's an small freeze down test on a simple cube:

That looks really, really cool! :scream: Could you tell me/ur something about the techniques you used...? Is it a growing selection...? Is it procedural, or 2D-animated in another app?

Good luck! I'm looking forward to more! :)

08 August 2005, 07:23 PM
thx alot :)

I made the growing freeze in ParticleIllusion3, an snow emitter moving downwards bassicly on a black background, that was rendered to *.tga image sequences, then in maya I bassicly added it to the color channel in the cube material and told it that it was an sequence and viola, easy and in fully 3D ;)

Will tweak it a bit more, made it in 4 mins so I'll have to give it some time

EDIT: Here's the stockholm tv tower I'll be freezing down (Kaknästornet)
Still un-textured, will just finish some detailing left and the I'll do the freeze down

08 August 2005, 09:40 PM
well, here's an small freeze down test on a simple cube:
good technic! :) i wonder how the hell i would do that in blender, metaballs crearly isn't enaugh i'll try some particle stuff than... :hmm:

08 August 2005, 09:15 AM
thx ;)

here comes the main building freeze test:
It's only the main cube that freezeing down, the other building parts are still getting their texture created, but I have alot of work left here, completely new texture, snow intensity work, bump maps etc. so this is one hell of a beta test ;)

08 August 2005, 11:34 AM
Looks very good:)

08 August 2005, 09:30 PM
This is looking really nice! I love to see Kaknästornet getting freezed, hehe. Keep it up man!

08 August 2005, 09:10 PM
I'm jumping back and forward on different scenes, damn this is hard, I've got alot of work here somewhat finished hehe, I need to spend more times finish one piece at the time

Smaller update on a completely different scene, will be "after" the freeze, yet even this scene is about 40%-50% complete hehe

The video is really rendered on "low" settings/resolution, and some artifcats apear when converting fast to another movie format so don't worry about that ;)

and more terrains are comming to the scene, aswell as other details to make a richer scene

08 August 2005, 12:31 PM
Cool shot, I like the colors in particular. Maybe the animatio is a bit too CG, the movements are a bit too clean. I would use a fixed camera there and let the wind, snow and other weather do the job. But we all got different styles. :D

08 August 2005, 06:37 PM
thx, I did actually plan on using another camera later on, something with less movement and little snow aswell to show the "calmness" after the freeze down. I'll see how it progresses, nomather what the final version is, it sure is going to go through one hell of a adjustments (color, contrast etc.) since the 3d softwares don't usually give me good images anyway.

Will post updates as soon as I get time ;)

08 August 2005, 12:13 AM
If I could make an observation about your freezing technique. It looks like the effect is tiled exactly the same for each side of the building. If it were me, I would render out the effect on a large rectangular plane, then apply the rendered sequence using cylindrical UVW's. That would stop the tiling and give you a more organic look.

If you were going to do that eventually anyway, just ignore my post, and Ill go back to being quiet.

Good job so far though!

08 August 2005, 08:13 PM
hehe it's ok, I'll probobly survive ;)

Yes I've been thinking about that, and I'll see how far I can go, the time is really not on my side now, but if I have to make it fast, well, I'm going to make it all look great through some effects in a compositing app so we'll bassicly see ;)

08 August 2005, 03:10 PM
Forget about this, I have to finish this projekt

09 September 2005, 02:06 PM
Well, I'm back again, I just have to finish this project or else I'll feel bad about myself :)

here goes another update:
trying to finish off the scenes I'm working, have to do a couple more, and in all this kaos I finally found two friends who could help me shoot a couple of outdoor scenes in sthlm

Main stockholm matte together with snow *reworked (live video):

Second Stockholm-snow scene: (live video together with particle snow)
I still have to do some serious color/contrast adjusting here

Kaknäs-tower scene update:
On the Kaknästorn-scene I've made a camera-motion change, made it go from up to down instead of going around the building as the first video and it seems to work alot better, more objects have been added to the scene aswell as the Kaknäs sign on the last image

I will post videos soon since I'll have to let the computer render out this scen aswell as the others throughout one school day ;)

And about the color, it's just some small color correction, in the final version everything will blend in nicely together

What do you all think so far?

09 September 2005, 01:51 PM
Here's one of the final versions of the kaknas-scene:
- The sky has been replaced with a more suitable one, looks better now doesn't it?
- Small adjustments on the building/houses surounding the tower, seems as if I have to detail them a bit more, but that won't be a problem ;)

EDIT: here goes another image (the color/contrast here is slightly too strong, at least on the blue one, that will be adjusted later on)

Does it look better now?
Something else you think I should add to the scene?
Comments are always welcome :)

09 September 2005, 11:46 AM
hey guys, I've finished, or tried finishing it, the results wasn't quite as I expected (I removed the sound due to so issues when editing, so the movie doesn't have any sound now), at least now I know how difficult and time consuming this was, so I've learned my lesson this time, hopefully someone will like something here

The weather in Stockholm takes a sudden turn

*I added the movie into a rar file so that I could upload it to my own fast broadband host

Great work people...

The voting thread will go up this Friday, so if you wish to tweak the entry you have until then.

And my apologies goes for not having sound on the film, I'm so sorry for that but due to some problems that occured I just didn't have the time to make it look right, so I hope you like this version without sound aswell :)

Hey lv_88,

Great job on getting your entry together! I know you had some doubts about finishing but it was good to see you pulled through in the end.

Overall....a solid piece! The snow effect in the foreground helped aid the atmosphere a lot...and some of your matte paintings were GREAT (ie....the first one  ). The freezing effect on the last building (the tower) was also pretty cool :)

As a critique though, some of the things looked out of a place a bit....even though you did an AWESOME job painting snow over the buildings in the main long-shot of the cityscape....the clouds overhead seem a little out of place.

Either way though....a fun entry nonetheless!

10 October 2005, 06:43 AM
hehe thx, really nice to hear! =)

yes, I had to put it together somehow, and that without even any backup plans whatsoever so it ended quite a bit as I didn't intended it to be, next time I'll have to make sure I have more time, going to school isn't that fun these days, and lately it's been so much work, I'm glad that I at least had something in the end :)

I see you also noticed the clouds, and I agree completely there with you, I had another skydome but I never edited it due to time itself

Wish you all good luck again and hopefully we'll meet again, on a challenge hehe :P
