View Full Version : 2-MINUTE FILM CLUB-Fight: Archer (animation)

07 July 2005, 07:15 PM
Ok, I want to do 2 movies a live action one and a 3d one, they'll have totally different stories. Is that ok ?

anyways the first one will be the animation one.

here's my idea - the camera is looking at a forest floor then 2 seed fall, after it starts to rain then the sun comes out and dries everything up. all of a sudden to plants start to sprout and start fighting over the sun beam in the middle while they're growning. i'll probably have a "dark" ending to it.

That sounds great! It'll be a refreshing take on antagonism, I sure! I'm going to take the slap-stick approach. No guns or fists, but definately something of the sandbox variety.

07 July 2005, 07:52 PM
thanks for the comment, i figured everyone would be doing guns, swords and fists.

the idea just popped to me while i was skating with a friend (he didn't have a good day, he fell and busted his arm pretty bad and the blood made me dizzy so i started thinking about other stuff to distract me from that and i think thats how i got the idea)

anyways here's a scene test, i just started working on it today so its very early. lots more to do !

07 July 2005, 01:58 AM
very interesting Olivier, I'll look forward your work!

07 July 2005, 06:45 PM
thanks for the interest Zakkos.

im still working on the scene, i want to get it too look as good as possible!

well im off to plan the sequences, but here's a small update !

08 August 2005, 11:32 AM
ok i have a question, i want to render the rain splashes, ripples and puddles in scanline since vray makes the transparencies look very very bad (anyone know how to fix this ?) so i was wondering if anyone knows a good tutorial on compositing in premiere. ok thanks expect updates soon i started working on one of the plants !

08 August 2005, 09:07 PM
here's a quick animation test of one of the flowers opening up (

08 August 2005, 01:16 AM
Beautiful flower, man! Keep it up!

08 August 2005, 02:20 AM
I saw both versions and I think that the first one was more "dreamy" it made a more fantasy mood although the 2nd is a little more realistic (you've watched some tipe lapse shots?) It depends on what you're looking for (mood Vs. reality) On the flower itself I just noticed the lack of a central part (the pistils?).
Apart these little details (that could be your choice to made them like so) your work is great Olivier, it always impresses me!:buttrock:

08 August 2005, 12:23 PM
thanks for the comments guys.

zakkos - im trying to get a mix between real and stylized, im still working it, i added a stemen and a texture, before it was only the shader i made for my rose scene. im glad you like my work! today is saturday so much work will be done today ! (hopefully :p)

08 August 2005, 12:50 PM
Seems very interresting so far. I like the story idea.
Good luck.

08 August 2005, 05:06 PM
thanks Igor!

here's an update, this is not a render, just an animation preview of the first 15 seconds. (

more updates tonight

08 August 2005, 11:30 AM
well here's an update, i did a test render of the first 12 seconds and i think it looks pretty good, just a few things need to be fixed here and there. but im gonna do alot of work today ! (

08 August 2005, 03:13 PM
Nice render - I like the morning feeling it has. The camera motion feels a little mechanical to me, though. The motion of the leaves feels pretty good. Keep it up!

08 August 2005, 05:29 PM
Good mood you've got there. Can't wait to see the finished film :bounce:
Keep it up.

08 August 2005, 09:53 PM
stepington - thanks, im working on the camera i hope i fixed it but we'll see tomorrow since im gonna leave an over night test render that i'll upload tomorrow, and the leaves i hand animated them since i couldn't bother deal with reactor :p

Igor Sandman - thanks, tomorrow im gonna start animating the flowers tomorrow, i hope that goes well and i don't have any complications

thanks for viewing everyone and big preview tomorrow !

08 August 2005, 07:32 PM
awwww man vray crashed while i was doing the test render animation so i lost everything but i'll rerender it while i sleep tonight, can't wait for the weekend so i can start the flower animations, because right now i feel way to tired after school and skating... so update tomorrow !

08 August 2005, 06:01 PM
sorry guys for taking so long but i was busy since this was my last week at my summer classes at the university and i was saying bye to everyone and spending my last few moments with my friends.

It looks pretty but for me there is too much haze, it distract from the action and the camera movement (even if it's better than before) for me is useless; it doesn't add nothing to the environment nor the story...
nothing to say about modeling or animation, it's just good!

08 August 2005, 08:38 AM
hey thanks for the help man, im totally going to fix that camera! and i'll lessen the bloom too.

08 August 2005, 10:01 PM
hey guys, im still working on this, i've been busy setting up the flower for animation, im almost done with that i just need to set up the leaves and i'll be ready to put them in the scene and finish this movie.

here's a small update, it has a few errors but thats the point of these tests :p (

08 August 2005, 01:57 AM
Beautiful mapping on the pedals. Can't wait to see that in your environment. 9 more days to go!

08 August 2005, 11:46 PM
thanks stepington, time is running out! better step on it!

well i have one of the flowers in the scene already and i'll add the second one tomorrow and hopefully be finished with the animation and send it out to be rendered.

08 August 2005, 11:03 PM

08 August 2005, 11:32 PM
Darn that skull! Nice piece there, Arch.

I guess there's just the three of us this month, eh? Oh well - hopefully next month there'll be more . . .

I working on my titles and doctoring two more shots. If all goes well I should be posting tommorow night or Wednesday morning. . . .

08 August 2005, 11:43 PM
Thanks stepington.
Hey did you notice a visual error? there's one but im not sure if its very noticable... if it is i might go and rerender those thousand frames (yea at 1:30min each.... which would be 1300 minutes grrrr)

Exellent man, Roberto said we have untill friday so thats great, im looking forward to your movie.

08 August 2005, 01:46 AM
great job Olivier!!

Hey did you notice a visual error?

the only thing I've noticed so far it's a jump in the animation of the nearest seed

As I've already said your work is great, the animation is really smooth and believable.
My overall impression is extremely good but it lacks on one thing: editing. Probably with different shots, "fegatelli"* it would improove a lot!

*(I have to find the english word for this. If someone understand it please tell me...i make a periphrase:blush: "a <<fegatello>> is when you shoot something not necessarily related to the action that can be used during editing to contextualize, give rhythm or break rhythm, link actions" e.g. the sky through the leaves, eyes shots and so on)
Sorry for this but I really don't know how to say it differently:cry:

08 August 2005, 01:56 AM
I guess there's just the three of us this month, eh? Oh well - hopefully next month there'll be more . . .

It's a pity...there were a lot of participants at the beginning...but we know that the 2mfc is not a walk in the park...let's hope for the next one!

08 August 2005, 11:01 AM
thanks for the comment zakkos, i should have changed up the camera angles, but i wasn't quite sure how to do it with out messing it up. but i guess i've learned my lesson.

09 September 2005, 07:27 PM
