Hi. Choosing only one and to simplify (as firewalls slow down the internet), which firewall significantly secures your system:

Hardware firewall or a software firewall?

IIRC, hardware firewall is generally better than software firewall because the hardware won't be susceptible to any kind of virus/tweak(can't find the word) while a software firewall could be modified/bypassed...etc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure about this.

go both.

hardware keeps the big attacks out and the software will keep some out, but i use it to make sure nothing from my pc goes out to the internet.

if you dl and get infected with a virus that "dials out" and connects to the internet, the hardware firewall might not pick it up. on the other hand, ZoneAlarm will ask you the second it tries to connect.
