View Full Version : QTmovie Compression settings

07 July 2005, 12:05 AM
Was wondering if I could get some help for good compression settings for QTmovies.
The file I have is 3min30secs and its a music video (low budget/no budget) so I want
to keep the sound quality descent. Everything I've been getting makes the visual quality very pixelated. Alot of the demo reels I see here are nice quality and small file size. Any help would be good.

Check out this line, should give you a good base setting.
Hope that helps.

For the best quality / size ratio in Quicktime movies, don't use Quicktime. Check out Sorenson Squeeze Pro Codec (

Personally, I've found that Sorrenson gives a better result if you post at half size. If you want full size, D1, divx gives me better results but then you have to worry about people not having that installed. If you're posting for the general public, chances are they won't have divx and will not bother, not know how or be afraid to install it just to see your video.

Just to confuse things...

mpeg4 in Quicktime pretty much rules for larger res stuff (DVD and higher). Sorrensen I'd use for low res web based stuff generally.

Thanks for the help, but I was hoping that I would be able to do it with out making a purchase.

Guess I'll keep messing with the compression tools I have.

the new H.264 format in Sorensen Squeeze for MPEG-4 (v4.0) seems to be taylored for higher-than-web resolutions. This would be playable in Quicktime v7 (not yet out for PC). I have squeeze v3 and can't afford the upgrade right now.

I would use either h.263 or h.264
