Hi all,

The one area my skills are not very good is shader design. I find snow to be hard to reproduce in 3D Studio Max 7. I can not get the sparkle effect on the surface of the snow.

I've attached what I've figured out so far.

Anyone know how to do sparkles?

the sparkle is going to come from a higher reflection / shininess, look at the above links

or add something like a cellular map to the shiny map, make it small spots that are random.

could even get more advance and link the shader to the camera and lights, having it sparkle only when the light is a certain angle to the camera... not sure how to do that right now of the top of my head. you would need reference photos and video of this.

also snow is translucent, wtih translucent shaders now avaliable for both MAX and MAYA you may want to look into that also
