I was recently asked to provide art samples for some freelance character design work. I went and did these three on the same day. I was wondering, how long do you guys usually spend on a single piece? As character designs, how well do these work? I wasn't given much direction. I was supposed to make some army/swat looking dudes.

I think your colors and outfits are quite good, but your basic proportions could use some work; some things to keep an eye on in the future is making sure the legs are long enough, and making sure that when at their sides, their palms are level with their crotch. Your forearms are too long right now. I think the headgear designs are the weakest part, but I know how hard those elements are to design. Your palette and overall designs show a lot of promise and potential, you should feel good about these end results, but don't be afraid to play around with new head designs either.

You are absolutely right. In the first and last images, the characters' right arms are too long, and in the middle, both arms are too long. Thanks for the very valuable crits. I was happy when I made them, but now that I have had a chance to look at themm I thought something was wrong.
I checked out your web page-- I love your HALO guys, and your 2d art. They are really cool!

I checked out that guys' website. Very cool, And I see what you're saying for the style. I think if I can loosen up a little more, my stuff will look better. My older stuff was unbelievably fussy.
Here is another try, this time just for fun. I tried some new ideas for the overall look (mostly higher contrast) that I don't like as much, and still passed on interesting headgear, but I think the anatomy is much improved.

A big improvement in the anatomy dept! The head seems maybe a smidge too large but overall I think you have a much better proportioned figure, great work!
