View Full Version : Takota - Mohawk Indian

I'm currently working on my texturing/modelling demo reel and this is one of my main characters. I'm not worrying about polygons. I'm trying to go for high detail for a next gen console. He's a mohawk indian and I've got a horse to go along with him. Right now I'm working on rigging and skinning him.
I would love to do a walk cycle on him for my reel. Anyone have advice on doing something like that for a texturing/modelling reel? I figure that showing how my character deforms and comes alive could show off my modelling skills at the same time.
I set up his face using Jason Osipa's Stop Staring, which is an awesome book. It's a really easy and intuitive set-up. He only has a color map right now but I'd like to do more.
I'll try to update as much as possible!

i really dig your indian so far. the only thing thats bugging me is his outer thigh. above his leg sash things on your viewport grab it looks like really baggy pants or something. like the kind old war generals used to wear.
also, if you're worried about your indian look, you could always pop his nose bridge out and suck in the area below his cheekbones so his face is less round. the face doesnt really bother me or anything though.
your model overall is really clean, i like it. i especially like all the little props like the power horn etc. is he getting a bow or tomohawk or anything? good job, keep it coming. =)

I finished rigging him tonight, finally figured out most of the bugs I was coming across. Thanks a lot for the tomahawk idea, I think it suits him really well. After rigging him I had to do a quick pose =)

Woah that's a nice set of facial targets you have!
Ca we see the same expression shot with a wire render? I'd soooooo like to see how all that deforms :) (just about to work on an animated head myself hahaha.)

I think a good texture on the mohawk would help it stand out a little more.
Looking really good!

It's been a while but here are some updates. I'm working on my demo reel right now so these are some shots from it, if they make the final cut =) And here is the wireframe of the face for you pior. Thanks for all the compliments on the blend shapes. I'm tellin you the book Stop Staring is the way to go for it =) I still have to buy it actually I've had it out from the library for who knows how long...

You made a good work in here. I like this character, especially his face, looks so real. But I think You should work a bit more on hands and forearms, and legs. Torso and head looks awesome.

Thanks for the comment Por@szek. I was going for realistic but still stylized if that makes sense! Because not many people you see have muscles that look like that, even if they are ripped! But I like the way they look on him. What kind of work do you think the hands, forearms and legs need?

Form they are looking less detailed than torso and face. If You made a this nice muscles on torso make it also in the arms, hands and also legs. Sould be light, but at the moment when i looking at the torso on the rest body isn't any muscles. Or I think in wrong way or the muscles didn't evolve regulary.

I actually really like the muscle structure. The textures are nice too. The only thing I don't know about is the face. It seems to be more African than Indian. The roundedness I think does that. Native Americans tend to have a more chiseled look. Maybe its me, but if I were to see the face alone, I definately would think him to be black and not indian. Overall I think its a great model. Good job!

That's really funny you mention that Gaboon because when I started making this guy he wasn't meant to be a native. He was actually supposed to be Allen Iverson, who is African american just in case you're not a basketball fan =)
I know that his face doesn't exactly look like a Mohawk native, but hey, I think it fits in nicely still.

hey valri, nice update his skin is looking much much better!
as for crits, i think his waist needs to be a little wider even for a male character it looks a tad disproportioned at this moment. Also the ground , the green needs to be desaturated a bit its a bit distracting to your character. Other than that nice work cant wait to see how it all comes together. If you run into anymore snags dont hesitate :)

Hey Heber thanks for the crits!
Unfortunately I've rendered him that way for my reel. I totally agree with the over saturation on the grass. If I have time I'll re-render him with lower saturation but I'm really pushing it for time right now. Yeah the skin is thanks to your advice on the specular maps. I like the waist like that personally, I think it suits him. Some guys do have tiny waists. But if I have time I might see what it's like widening it a bit.
Well here is a picture of his horse. I was going for a horse similar to the one in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.

Cool horse You made in here. Its definately different than Neox, but have own style. Cool idea with hair on mesh, not on alpha. Looks great to me. Lovely. Now put character on the horse. :)
