Title: Wage Slave
Name: Michael Dashow
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

Hi, all! I was assuming everyone had seen this by now, but people are still saying I should submit it to this gallery too so, um, here it is. At least this is a larger version than some people have seen, so there are a lot of details you can pick out now.
This was my entry for the CGTalk Master and Servant Challenge, and proud recipient of an Honourable Mention. Thanks to all who added such helpful insight and input into its creation.

07-01-2005, 10:37 PM
Did you inspire in the character "Cthulu"?

Good work!

07-01-2005, 10:37 PM

:bounce: :applause:

This, as well as your work at Blizzard are important vittles of popular culture.

Years ago, I wasted an entire summer playing Diablo II. Damn you.

Now I'm reading through Andrew Loomis's Creative Illustration, and Eye of the Painter plus Mad Muwhatspleenibbles neferious Necronomicon for Nobby Numbskulls, in hopes of putting forth work a mere dribble of what you've shown.

Many thanks for the inspiration. :buttrock:

07-01-2005, 10:54 PM
I love how you handled the monster/boss' pin-striped suit. Great job!

07-01-2005, 10:55 PM

LOL!love the "no exit" detail:thumbsup:

Wow, look at all these comments! Good, at least that makes me feel better about posting this: I was thinking it was too self-aggrandizing to do so, but guess folks still hadn't see in. Thanks for all the comments, everyone!

BlackBastet & Kalebu - thanks!

Posh - Thank you! No less deserving that your great piece, which as you know is one of my faves.

minminxu - Thanks, glad you like the colros. i got some good input from the folks int eh challenge.

basho - thanks!

ducklator - well, not that much, but art is a good place to channel aggression, right? ;)

tevih, mindrot, jugeras, & abourabe - thank you.

tencendur - glad you liked it. It's too bad, even at this size you can't see all the fun details on the left side, like the Dilbert cartoon and the NecronomiCom phone list with "research and devilment," "Yog-Sothothware Support," "Infernal Resources..." Okay, maybe it Is a good thing, it might not be all that funny after all. :/

arizaga - yes, it was definately influenced by Cthulhu and the other Lovecraft mythos.

ravioli - Ha, that's nothing compared to the time I spent working on Diablo II, you should play it for a few more years! But seriously, thanks so much for the kind words, i'm really flattered.

teknotek - thanks, I used Photoshop's path tool to get the pinstripes just so. I may have detailed a bit more in the Challenge thread if you can get through all the pages.

gardan - hey, it's just a picture, don't get me in trouble here! I lok nothing like that, either of them!

dimitris, zakkos, & gonzalo - thank you so much, glad you like all the details.

Thanks again everyone!

07-02-2005, 03:22 AM

07-02-2005, 09:16 AM
A Great Lovecraft style monster. Wonderfull painting.

07-02-2005, 10:22 AM
How could I possibly give you anything else then 5 stars? Great work!

07-02-2005, 11:13 AM
what are those 3 wax candles doing in a well-light office?

icant get my head around it

07-02-2005, 01:40 PM
Hi walrus! Again congrats to this masterpiece!
And thnx for giving me feedback!

fantastic work!

07-02-2005, 02:09 PM
Wow! I previously saw this when the challenge outcome was announced and thought this was a great piece. A funny theme and a pleasing composition plus I love all the Lovecraft stuff. But now when I checked all the details it's even better! The printer and the stuff you mentioned not showing :). I just love that. Too bad that the resolution doesn't do enough justice for this great piece of work. How about a full-size pic? :)

07-02-2005, 02:42 PM
excellent.. 5 stars from me :applause: *****

07-02-2005, 03:47 PM
lol yeah the hp Lovecraft 4500 is cool :D ...and so is the rest of the pic of course!

07-02-2005, 04:13 PM
This is such a cool pic! and very funny to boost along. congrats

07-02-2005, 04:18 PM
One and only :)
U the man, u r GOOD.

07-02-2005, 04:26 PM
I love the movement and colors in this piece, very funny also !

Excellent work man

07-02-2005, 05:19 PM
any reason for the candles??....

07-02-2005, 05:28 PM
lol, this pic is great. i love the obedience poster, great touch =)

07-02-2005, 06:46 PM
tilstrom - thanks!

monsit - Congrats on another win for you! I still don't know how you find time to enter twice every time, and consistantly winning entries on top of that. But I'll definitely see you around next time.

refuznik, heiesuke, and stéphane - thank you all!

AZTGlorY - 5? Wow, thanks!!

AKDesigns - The idea was to combine the modern office with the magic of ancient, dark religions. So the cubicle walls and the calender and the printer and clothing are all aspects of the modern and technological. Meanwhile, the boss and the weird runic language spitting out of the printer, and the black candles - sometimes associated with magical or dark rituals - fit the more magical and arcane aspect of the piece. So if you have a corporate job where you have to summon things and perform incantations and such, you might need the traditional candles along with more modern tools such as a computer with a spell-checker. (ha ha.)

Goro - Thanks, buddy! Big congrats to you too. You have a great sense of light and color, I'm glad what little I had to offer was helpful. See you for the next one...!

Tero - Even in the full resolution pic - which is huge, btw, 3207 x 3786 pixels - you can only barely make out the phone-list. I can read it only because I know what's already there. But at least here I was able to post it larger than I did during the challenge.

APD_Jack, pandamator, turtle, & cypher - thank you for stopping by and posting nice things!

character - glad you were able to catch that in this bigger-resolution image. It was fun making the calender spoofing those motivational images from ultra-corporate offices!

An' I think that covers everything. Thanks, all, for stopping by!

07-02-2005, 09:26 PM
Yeh! This is my boss, from Mars :)

07-02-2005, 11:49 PM
Congratulations on the honorable mention. i felt it should have placed higher. Will always be a huge fan of yours!!

07-03-2005, 12:44 AM
great design, and great drawing!! , very clean and smooth output, welldone!

07-03-2005, 02:19 AM
The motivational poster cracked me up...like something out of despair.com.

Great work.

07-03-2005, 08:52 AM
I really love the way you presented Cthulu... all tall and meneacing in a pinstripe suit. I also love how the pants gradually turn into (or are obscured by) this dark smoke... definitely what an elder god would look like if he were boss of the office. And yeah, the subtle little nicknacks in the office were also a nice touch. The corrections on the piece of paper are hilarious, as well as the NecronomiCom sheet. Kudos. :)

07-03-2005, 10:30 AM
I saw you work on this during the challenge.. your method is really unique :)
I can really respect illustrated comedy like this, you should make some tutorials ;)

Im definately going to take part in the next challenge... when that is.. I dont know.. *cries*

07-03-2005, 03:47 PM

07-03-2005, 04:48 PM
Wow! :surprised Now, this is an excellent work! I enjoy everything in it! All the detail - the skulls for buttons, the "NO EXIT" sign and everything. You've depicted the cloth deformation greatly! Great job once again!* * * * *

07-03-2005, 06:42 PM
I like the scary atmosphere.
Excellent work 5 stars!.

07-03-2005, 07:48 PM

07-04-2005, 03:08 PM
Excellent entry! Very well done, funny, and closer to the theme than many of the other entries.

Five stars from me...http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

07-04-2005, 07:22 PM
Nothing really to add, perfection. and I liked the messege.

07-04-2005, 07:40 PM
great expression, wonderful suit! although the alien text threw me off, outer space offices,hehehe...scary alright

07-04-2005, 09:28 PM
Thanks, everyone, for more kind posts, votes of confidence, 5-star comments and all that. :)

fabianv - Tutorials? I thought I was pretty thorough in showing my process in my CGTalk challenge thread. Sure, umpteen pages is a lot to wade through, but it's all there! (I even added a mini-tutorial at paperslip's request after I submitted my final image, so be sure to check that out.

As for the next challenge, I beleive Leigh or someone posted somewhere that they hoped to have the new one announced before Siggraph. as that's on the 31st, I expect we should know something in under 4 weeks!

Li Yubo - well, it's not actually my office, though I cribbed a lot from the building I work in. I'm fortunate enough to work in an office where everyone wears t-shirts and jeans instead of suits and ties. So it's not really my boss. He has fewer tentacles... just kidding! :p

Anyhow, thanks again, everyone! Cheers!

07-05-2005, 05:43 AM
It's all been said, but excellent piece

07-07-2005, 01:01 PM
My congratulations is due! CONGRATULATIONS, Michael! See you at next challenge!!!

08-01-2005, 07:41 AM
Who are you? The boss or the employee?

08-01-2005, 01:04 PM
he he he...:D
Nice!

08-01-2005, 04:19 PM
perfect!! hahaha :D congrats, mike!!:thumbsup::thumbsup: see you around!

08-02-2005, 02:17 PM
Looks rather like an old boss I had in the Navy except his rain coat isn't disceveled. The figure itself stands out nicely but the cloud seems to look like it dosn't fit. the look on the young fellows face brings back memories of some of the classic art one saw in the old mad mags. just real enough to be quite belevable. You could always use the old nuckles to the mouth for the girls reaction ... nah to trite well done. Tawneycocker

08-02-2005, 04:13 PM
Thanks, everyone! And thanks to cgtalk - or whatever it's called now - for electing me into the choice gallery. What that means to everyone else is that I'm going to try to be doing a big tutorial on this piece sometime soon. Geez, how am I going to manage to find time for that AND a new challenge ON TOP OF my new job too... Eeep! Oh well, it'll all work out.

jeromoo - Should be starting soon, like in a week or two after SIGGRAPH gets out. I hope I'll have time to do the challenge, but I plan on giving it my best... See you there!

heaVencAt - Me? I'm just the artist! But if I had to identify with anyone, it'd be the employee. I did this painting at a sort of low-point at work, and while my bosses were nothing like this, I could empathize with the feeling.

dunkelgold - Thanks! Hope to see you in the next challenge too, Benita!

Tawneycocker - Thank you. I tried a more renderred version of the clouds somewhere along the way, but they actually didn't work as well as the ones I have in there now. Oh, well! :)

08-03-2005, 05:45 AM
wow !nice work!:)

08-03-2005, 05:45 PM
i took a look at this pic at least 20 times now,

You captured the experience of being at work perfectly.

08-05-2005, 05:21 PM
I apreciate the attention on details

08-05-2005, 06:36 PM
Here's a closer look at the details on that part of the wall:

This shot was taken a bit earlier in the piece's development, before the rest of the details were more finalized. So, for example, the ceiling and the flames aren't quite as finished as they eventually ended up.

08-06-2005, 02:31 PM
Big bossss! very good picture!

08-09-2005, 03:44 PM
Very fun :scream: Boss is very cool

08-11-2005, 06:12 PM
Absolutely love it! Great work, are you going to do prints of it? (Sorry if someone else asked this already!) This would make an amazing poster print! I would hang it on the wall in my office!

08-13-2005, 01:11 AM
Congrats on the award and the new job. Look forward to the next challenge. Know it will be awesome as always!! By the way i really miss your posts in the Jam. You have a way with drawing the ladies.

08-20-2005, 02:28 PM
Felixx and Desten - Thank you very much!

Starzchica23 - I'm flattered! I hadn't really thought about prints, but I have been in the habit of making giclee prints available of my paintings. I know a really high-quality printer who works on cotton paper with a UV-protective coating. Check out my web-site prints section for a rough idea of what I charge and then e-mail me if it's in your budget and your serious about a print.

Jill - That's sweet of you to say! I know, I'm sorry I haven't been 'round much. This new job has got me crazy... Crazy in a good way, I'm loving it, but very little free time. I miss having the luxury of time to do the jams too, I'm now woefully out of practice! Things will settle down...someday... and I'll be back! :scream:

08-20-2005, 11:16 PM
Wow how in the world do you create such a style? wonderfull!

08-21-2005, 12:09 AM
excellent work

08-29-2005, 04:10 PM
This is great, kudos on the detail work and on that printer.

10-15-2005, 02:38 PM
Great work, very professional. I like that your approach is a mixture of a very fluid cartoon linework, but finished in a very 3d painterly fashion, lovely. The 'Lovecraft 4500' & 'Necronomicom' are nice little touches. I especially like the lighting on the guys lower arm/body, oh & and Mr. Cthulu's jacket feels like it has real weight to it.

I think I may have worked in this office, glad I found the exit.

Nice one.

11-03-2005, 09:31 AM
lol that office guy sure know how to get himself into troubles :)

Oh dear, there are just so many things that I could say to describe your illustrations! Shame you haven’t activated the option of critiques on ALL your work (com’on! Why won’t you just let us bombard you with comments, praise and worship! You deserve it!) But for now I’ll point out one or two things: First off- that your style is quite original, I follow a lot of artists but your style is new and refreshing to me. Second: I love the expression and comic relief; it’s as if you are the Norman Rockwell of Illustration!

I hope to see a lot more work to come =)
