Well, here's my first actual thread at CGtalk:
Below is the first avatar of many of the new eGenesis title currently in the works from the "Tales of Alvin Maker" MMO.
So far it's around 4,666 tris and is still a w.i.p. I plan on doing a more decorative version for myself whenever I'm done with this. I was instructed to keep it relatively plain. (no feathers, necklaces, etc)
I'll be posting shots of the textures as I work on them, and I'll also be doing the physique on the model too.
The model is done in Max 5 as well.
Critiques and comments welcome. =)

Nice stuff man! Very clean topology and nice form. Slap a texture on him and toss us a render. Great job!

i should make this a fanboy response, but considering i work with you and everything it wouldn't make sense.
i've seen this thing from start to finish and its good, but you know that cause i told you already. get to texturing! less hackysack!
Can you put a direct view so perspective does not affect the proportions. The arm I am not sure but it could be a little skinny, for the body type. The rest looks cool so far :)

i really like the expression on his face, but when looking at your meshflow on the face this expression might be the only one he'll be having. You really should try to get some edgeloops running around the mouth, otherwise it'll be impossible to animate his face.

brian and justin - thanks guys =) textures on the way.
jOBe - currently there's no facial animation planned for this character, that's why he's modeled this way. when i go back to add detail for my portfolio's sake, odds are i will add polygons and part the mouth.
desp - im posting a dead on view and a very roughly blocked textured user view render. i want to go for a lean athletic look, so i may thin out his body some more.
root - dont worry, he's got a diaper thing happening up under there
^^very rough textures, just getting rid of seams^^
overall feel for the model etc will be stylized realistic, so i'm not trying for photoreal here either. skintone will be darker too.

hello sir. i think you have done well in modeling the physic of a native american. the nose in particular says this. in the first set of orthos in this thread, the side view looks like hes a tad, just a tad mind you, too far forward. it just seems to me like this stationalry pose would have our friend on that nose of his, because his center of gravity is not above his feet. looking great though!

I'd just like to say that it's really cool to see some work on this game, because I've been following it closely, both as a fan of the books and as a student that happens to know someone else working on this game.
This is looking pretty cool, and all I can say is i'm very jealous of your opportunity to work on this project.
good luck with everything though, this MMO has some lofty goals and looks to be a very different kind of game. I really hope it does well.
I think I see the slight problem. Adding some kind of waist to him and making his stomach area width smaller will fix the problem. Right now at least from the front view you see the whole upper body go down and follow the lines of the legs too perfectly. Adding an indication of a waist would help greatly. Seems a little too straight. The arms look alright it was just the main body that was throwing me off in the first pics.

lookin good, you should give him love handles maybe make his neck alittle slimmer the profile looks good to me, i think its the neck and head that seem a bit pushed forward the back of the neck seems to curved other than that its fine. :thumbsup:

he doesn't really look native dude. It looks like a european guy dressed as native. natives have high cheek bones and stong jaw lines. the nose should also be broad too. facial features are very anglo.

kndrewa - yeah he does look a touch far forward, i can either drag some verts back or fix that when i physique

Desp#2/Rog - good call. i sucked in the verts just above his waistline to make it less boxy. i might make his whole torso less wide overall also.
chris - i'm going to suck in the sides actually. im going to keep this guy on the skinny. ill look into the neck.
lordmachuca - you dont think he looks native at all? i'm going for younger, heroic native american style. i went and googled a lot of pictures too, as well as did a fair amount of reference. the indian is based on a stylized concept sketch of someone like these fellows.

I agree he looks native to me. The texture will make the biggest impact on that area. I also like that woven cap in one of your pictures that looks nice. You might want to give him two looks one with the hunting look and another more of a camp clothing.

allright, a little more update, with a little more diffuse.
-lengthened front and back flap
-widened nose a tad
-painted out buttloads of seams
-widened profile of arms
-sucked in sides a teeny bit so torso wasnt so boxy
*let it be known that texturing isnt my strongpoint, and reiterate that this is not supposed to look photoreal*
fire away. more updates and texture work to come.

Hey this looks cool, I just modelled a native indian too. Yours looks much more native than mine. Liking the colors and style so far. Keep it up =)

allright, more updateness.
i tweaked his neck some because my friend pointed out that there were some things wrong with it. that and i moved some polygons around near the upper bicep for better definition. (its hard to tell, but i think it helped alot.)

and here's the version with some facepaint (which i like tons better)
i need to give him feathers and stuff, but i dont think im allowed. =/

this is lookin nice, the textures are lookin kinda soft try make them more defined.

thankye. yeah i have to touch up some stuff yet. any other texture input or hints would be appreciated since i suck at them. i have one other skin to go, and bump, spec for all.

he has really small skinny arms. Is he suppose to look weak?

I disagree, I don't think his arms are skinny at all, the proportions ars good, and textures are coming along nicely. As Deathby Chris said a bit more definition would really bring the textures out, especially around the abs, intercostal area. :thumbsup:

i just got back on this project after a while. i had some other more urgent projects to take care of at the company.
i added some bump and some spec. it will soon have some normal map action, and id like to fix some more stuff with the diffuse. im basically having some problems where the textures are just looking flat in places and i dont know what to do to change it without making it look muscular.
i did make the stomach area a bit more muscular and defined, but id really like to avoid making this character "ripped".
id really like to hear from anyone whos good at texturing on this issue. ill post the flats too if you guys want.
