View Full Version : PROP101 GAC Entry revisited:

06-29-2005, 03:57 AM

I am finally going to finish up on this old GAC entry for PROP101. Now that the challenge is way past over and I intend on spending my small amount of free time tightening my portfolio and getting more practice, I am going to complete this project under my own set of guidelines. The original poly limit I believe was 1K tris or similar but I will now only limit myself to "under 1500" tris meaning I won't be adding much except small stuff like added foliage and/or details...

First of all here's the original thread with some WIP modeling images:

And now attached I have my current progression for the texturing. This is with approximately 4 hours of work done past the last entry of my GAC thread. As you can see, I have the ground and grass fairly well done. I intend on adding more grass and finishing up my UV mapping ASAP so I can do the base textures for the rest of the model.

C&C please and look for many upcoming updates on this piece and a coming character project of mine.

alright here is another small update...just did some UV mapping and fixed the look of the vine a bit, added more grass and overall tightened the existing textures. Also, this is how I will present my future WIP images...

major update next time after I get the UV mapping 100% done (UV mapping something like this is harder than a character imho cause you can't do simple cylinder/auto projections on stuff...) Next update will be more textures, most likely the base texture for everything (I'll post a WIP image before I add the dirt layers and "jungle grime")

I know I said no more small updates, but here are 2 little shots I made to show off my foliage...this is the last thing I am doing before texturing the actual missile.

big update tonight...fonally got some time to work on it...

man if I could just quit my job then I could crank out all kindsa good stuff!!!

lol...not as big as planned, here goes:

ignore the main shaft of the missile, the only real texture is to the middle wings and the guidance system...more to come 2morrow.

alrighty for the sake of getting a few more posters in on this thread here's a beauty render. All I changed in this is the portholes for the center wings to retract into and made the wings look a lil dirtier/nicer. Next is the rest of the main shaft then onto the primary and tertiary wings and finally the dirt layers including vines and moss.

small update, 1 hour of texture work to the main shaft...next is the rest of the shaft and the other wings, I'll find time to knock those out ASAP (within the week) then all I'll have left is the vines and general tweaking/dirtying.

this will be finished by tomorrow, so check back. still no crits or anything, which is understandible since I have a broken link on the last update and I haven't made much progress...but this bad boy'll be outta my hair as of 2morrow!!

btw I can't update my site...so excuse me for that...it is a technical problem I am trying to work out with my php scripting...=(

I couldn't comment because for the first 2 days of posting all the detail was lost on the black bg and i couldn't even tell what it was. I'm slowly starting to see what it is.
Just FYI, keep the beauty renders and stuff till the very end, for now, just post screenshots or very well lite textures shots with no highlites.
So far my comment would be that the texturing is inconsistent, there is fine detailed writing i can read on the fins, but the vine in the middle is blurry.

alos, what are those yellow boxes all around it?

Just now noticed you left a comment, thanks for the input. See this is the type of criticisms I need and appreciate. I'll work on making the textures more consistent...any tips on how to do so? Would I just try to lay out the UVs so they are more proportionate???

Also, I will have the "finished" version this week sometime...I have been having alot of issues with my website and can't get uploads to work or I would have posted some more WIP. I am putting the vines in place right now and then need to go back over the original rocket texture and dirty it some with moss and small vines.

and sorry about the beauty render, i was just bored one day and felt like throwing it out there...^^ It'll look nice, but I think I'll need more advice. Thanks again, look for the update within the next 2 days..

ok, here it is people. For the few of you that have kept up with this thread, I am finally ready to show off a close to finished model. The only changes I will make from here on out are ones based on C&C from this thread. I may add some more vines and foliage yet, but I am satisfied for now. Please keep it honest people, cause this piece may go into my portfolio and I want 100% real criticism and commentary.

Thanks...here we go:

MENTAL RAY RENDER SHOT (beauty render)

I look forward to your comments everyone, thanks.

I don't care for the big "base" ring that you have. I would just keep the pile of grass and your model. It looks a lot better! Good job.

thanks Neil, ya I got that comment from someone on CGChat.com forums, so it's officially 86'd. Also, the guy did a real nice paintover for me to show how extra foliage would help along with a nice new BG...so Ima do that. Expect a 99.9% finished model by the end of the week.

This is it folks, unless I get some critical feedback that I think I have to follow through with, this is my finished piece. Thanks to everyone who gave criticisms on my WIP shots and thanks especially to the CGChat.com crew for their support and suggestions.

I am including a maya software render, as well as a mental ray image just to illustrate how nicely the textures work together regardless of the rendering output.

man this turned out very nicely!
on those first few posts, i couldn't tell what the hell it was!
looks great !

thanks dpizzle, ya my workflow was kinda off at the beginning.. After finally finishing this (I took way too long on it) I see now how a better workflow helps out. I am 10x better at UV mapping just because of this project however, so I guess the silly amount of time I spent on it was worth it.

I did enjoy making a prop/environment piece though, so I think I'll do another. Maybe something on a larger or even a smaller scale this time...just to change things up.

I don't want this to seem like a bump, but I am just now getting around to posting this:

I hope that background looks nicer, please give your feedback.
