Ok new day new model. After finishing the Turtle which everyone loved... or hated and said nothing:D, I want to make a Pirate so I watched Pirates of the Carribean, good flick btw... got some refs from the DVD,
and got modelling. I wanna stress that I'm not modelling Mr Sparrow just using him for a style ref.
So far I have this:
after a few hours of tweaking. I'm looking at stopping around the 4500 to 5000 tri mark. I have just over 4000 right now.

It looks like you've got too many verts in the knees, I suspect he might have shoulder deformation problems. Too many polys around the lips, too many around the neck, too many in the belt. Overall, for a 4000 tri model you aren't using your polys very well. Not trying to be mean, but it needs serious optimization.
I wanna stress that I'm not modelling Mr Sparrow just using him for a style ref.
I'd say he looks nothing like Johnny Depp but you managed to evade that one :p

Righto then just about finished the modelling, all in all, 3700 for the Pirate and 500 for the sword and belt. C&C always welcome. Peace.

The model is very nice and smooth. He looks mayan, if that's what you are aiming for, then you did an excelent job. I really wanna see it textured =P.

i was wondering which model to do next and you have inspired me to make a pirate also. - thanks.
as for your model. the only thing that really stands out is that the front looks a little too flat.
it should perhaps be more rounded.

There's me thinking "I don't remember ever seeing a low-poly pirate before, I'll make one for me portfolio", and I goes ahead and makes it nary even half a moon ago. Next thing I see, everone's making 'em!
Shiver me timbers etc etc
Anyhoo, looking good so far. I agree with the above comment about the chest, and there's some modelled detail on there that I suspect will be a waste of tris once it's textured up, but that's up to you. Detail vs polycount is always a case-by-case judgement call.

@Iain& ROB: I agree its a case by case basis. The only detail there is the indentation between waistcoat and shirt which I think will look cool when textured. Still tweaking the normals on the chest to give it a bit more of a curve too.
@Augustine: Thanks dude, yeah the guy I used for reference looks ethnic. Thought it would make a change from the pointy nosed regular ones floating about.
Anyhoo, must get on with the UVing and texturing. Updates in a bit. :D

He's UVed up and ready to go! I deleted the scabbard cos most of the Pirates just stuck their swords in their belts. Anyways got the colour scheme I wanted and started texturing the head.

that character comes out very nice. anyway also a not so usual theme, thats kind of refreshing.
but i must say, that i would have liked to see mr.sparrow in 3d ;)
perhaps you will go some day an check his face out? ;) i think its a challenge to remake real faces, isnt it? (i dont know it because i never modeled a char)

Thanks Sascha, (Great trees by the way!!) Yeah I decided not to model Capt Jack Sparrow, I learnt the hard way after trying to model this guy:
Just how harshly people can crit if he doesnt look exactly the way he should!! :D But seriously, as long as you have good reference it isn't too difficult to get him looking the way he should...usually. :)

Right been a little busy but I'm now gonna focus and finish this guy. Grrr. Tweaked the head texture and given him a niiiice chest rug. :D I'm pretty happy with the whole look of it so far so,now on to the clothes.
The face is especially nice looking. Really feels like lighting is hitting it and going through the skin.
Put some stuff on his hair like sparrow also make the hair less controlled. Right now it looks like a hair cut a normal person would have not somebody that goes on a boat for months on end.

Mini update. Seeing if the grimy sleeve look fits my Pirate. Think I'll put a bew beads in his hair at some point too. Anyways...

he got a cool unique face. he got character :)
perhaps some differences on the two halfes (both face halfes and chest halfes) would be refreshing. but i think you would go for it later anyway.

excellent character you have through that face,are you gonna add some wear and tear to the clothing after youve 'grimed' it up because a rough looking pirate....im guessing,wouldnt have well looked after clothes.

Thanks guys, yes I aim to add wear and tear and make him assymetrical where I can. I dont want too much though cos I want him looking more like a pirate and not a tramp, cos these guys are supposed to be worth a few bob after robbing all those people.:D
Anyhoo got his waistcoat and chest belt done, gonna sort out his pantaloons and boots out now. Oh and his sword.

That head looks fantastic now that it's textured, bags of character. He's shaping up really nicely.

Added a few details to the buckles and the top half , will be finishing him this weekend hopefully if I'm not out partying in the sunshine!!

Looking real good Kaisasose!...his face is class, he's got lots of character and the textures look great also!...I do think the eyes need to be a little less bright tho'...but overall...this is coming along nicely..keep up the good work man :)

Thanks a lot guys, I'll tweak the eyes when I do the final polish of the textures, still got to add a few bits here, shadows there.

I'm just about done with the texture now apart from what i mentioned above and a spec. See you in a little while...:D

Okay Spec is done, I've also lowered his arms for easier deformations and put nice trinkets in his hair. Didn't want to call him "Pirate" So his name is M'Fisto... with a silent 'M'!!:D
I'll post up the flats in a bit. Show some love to Mr M. Else he'll come get ya. Arrr.
I like everything but the hair. Hair looks too clean and well kept. If that is changed this model will kick azz imo. I mean It already kicks azz :)

Cheers Desp, I was hoping with all the grime on his clothes and the trinkets in his hair it would detract from the fact that he uses Loreal!! :D I'll tweak it a leetle bit, some dirt and crumbs should do it.

Okay just about done now I think, a little dirt and string in the hair has made him look less glamorous.
A few more renders and flats... and wait for it to drown in the WIP section (no pun intended) cos we aint getting a finished game art forum are we... pah!! :D

you have some really nice stuff going on so far. i think the texture work on the face in particular is really nice, and i really like the slack jawed look you gave him.
theres a few nitpicky things that i think would help alot with this model.
i think still think he's too clean. like splotches from swilling grog the night before on his inner shirt or on his pantleg would be sweet.
i definitely think his cutlass needs to be way longer, like maybe down to mid cuff on his boot.
i think you should fill in the back area on his gloves too. the open space reminds me a lot of driving gloves as it is now, so filling that in and then fraying the fingers might help with the scurvy pirate dog look.
killer job overall though. i really like the face.
i really wish we would get a finished art forum. =/

Been watching this one for a bit and it's come to a very good conclusion.
TPages could've been used better - you might've been able to get all the detail on just 2 x 512's! Definitely love the colours you've chosen.
Get back in the biz man - move away from the south coast ;)
The dirt and stuff helped :)
Just needs some cool poses and this is done. Besides some of the top crits.

Very nice model... The texture is fabolous as well! But I'd like to point something out... His teeth are too white :) These are pirates that never brush... He's too much of a pretty boy as well- give him some scars, dirty his clothing up a bit, maybe a blood stain on his shirt? This is a dirty pirate we're talking about!
Edit: His arms a tad too long, maybe shorten them up a little bit, and it'll be perfect.

Boondock: He's "clean" to a point I agree. However there are stains on his sleeves and shirt, I didn't want to go overboard on the dirt thing. I'll look into lengthening the sword, didnt notice that before, thanks. His gloves, after watching the POTC DVD I saw both types of gloves and decided to go with 'em open, just to break up the texture. An odd fray here or there wouldnt go amiss though. Thanks for the input. Appreciated. :D

Looks great man. The texture job is awesome. The only thing I don't really like the look of at the moment is the hair.

I'm not too good yet, but I'm learning... I just felt I could make a few comments to contribute to the progress of your model... Guess not... Either way... Great job man.
Proudclod was half right about the arm. Once he said that I did notice something... should have noticed this before I am sorry :|
It is not the arm that is long but the torso is making it look long. Here is a fixed version and showing that the arm would be in the right spot when bent.
The Left is the fixed one and the right one is the old one.
Now I know it is going to be hard to fix it. But this is a great model already if you can spend some time arranging that it will just make it look much more solid. Sorry again for not noticing it :|

Proudclod, No offence meant. Wasn't referring to your work, but your age. But for starters, the dirt issue has been covered, he definitely isn't a pretty boy, he already has two scars on his face. :)
I used photographic ref from 3dsk to model this guy to make sure I got the proportions perfect so unless the guy I used is a mutant, :twisted: I believe the arms are fine. Maybe the length of the waist coat make his arms look longer as Desp says however I'm pretty certain the proportions are pretty solid. Cheers guys.

Maybe you should work a little bit more on his eyetexture though. Right now they look a bit lifeless. And a little too white.
And for your next project you might concider optimizing that UV-space a little more before painting the textures :)
But great work anyways!

Cheers dude, I actually did darken the eyes quite a bit after Mr. Woo mentioned it. I suppose I gotta get that balance right with the next one... and the UV space!! See this is what happens when you show people your flats!! :D
Anyways, thanks for the crits, I've lengthened the sword (good call Boondock) and a wine stain never hurt anyone.
