Hey all, I'm trying to create rigged, low poly background characters, good enough to look realistic from medium distance. I am doing this with the idea of making a number of characters that anyone will be able to download to use in their work. Creating something like this site (

Here is the start
and after some refinement.
hopefully this idea comes to fruition.
Any comments or ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks guys, This is what she is looking like now. Trying to keep the polys as low as I can with as much detail, but im not a very good lowpoly modeller, right now about 500 polys.

Just a quick test using the same model as the girl above. When properly textured and modeled I wouldnt mind having this guy running around in the background of my scene.

Another test using the same model, they are slowly getting better. still trying to find the best method to do these characters quickly. Hardest part is gatting the texture seams to sit right.

Just a quick test to see how she will look in the background. Making progress on the texture template. So I can easily make many characters without texture banding occuring.

Well I've left this alone for a while but I am back at it. She is not perfect but im still in BETA mode, trying to find the best and fastest method to mass produce these guys quickly and make them look half way decent. (note hands have not been textured yet)

great work! texturing is awesome. last model looks kinda boy-like, my advice would be to try saturate her hair or extend it or something.

Great work !
i did about 30 characters for architectural viz with different poses...
..but they are not so low poly.
I will be happy to contribute them if you need them for texturing or whatever..

Krembo99, I would appreciate any help you can give me. The hardest thing at the moment is getting good reference images of people (I can't just convert the entire site into low poly 3d characters).

Umm... infact If any one else has reference images (front, side and back in the T stance) they would like to donate to this cause i would really appreciate it.

Thanks krembo99 for the offer, and would appreciate any images. I'm trying to round up some very unwilling friends to take part as well. I need 3 photos for each person (front, side and back in a T stance) like the ones below. One thing is in the side image i require the arms to be raised like in the image below so i can see the side of the chest/back of the person. Oh, and as high a resolution as you can. :)

well.. ive uploaded some, if they will be ok for you, and if you need more, iīll do them tommorow.

if i did something wrong, tell me and iīll try to correct it (i know tha background is a little hard to isolate, but thatīs the best i found ..)

Hahaha, thanks a lot krembo99. The photos are great.

The method I'm using to texture each character is I match the mesh up to each photo (front, back and sides) and then i just project each image onto the mesh. I then bake to texture without any shadows or lights, after I just merge the three images into a texture in photoshop.

I know its cheap and raw, but thats why the T stance has to be perfect and all images have to be dead on centered with as little distortion as possible (all easier said than done).

Once again thanks, now the pressure is on for me to do your photos justice.

ok, here is an update of one of the characters, using references krembo99 kindly donated. Texturing is not quite finished on this guy. You can download him HERE ( 2MB (3dsmax file & large texture file). I would appreciate any comments on improving texture, also comments on the actual model and any ways of improving it. Thanks.

Hey there, this guy is about 90% done (hands arnt textured, and still some banding in places). Download the max file here. (
Now I'm going to spend some time on refining the process of creating one of these guys, including riging.
This is quite close to what the end results will look like, so the question is would a whole slew of free animatable characters like this be of any worth to you?

Trying to rig them now.
There is an animation of the image below here (, its horrible stuff. I'm learning as i go with the rigging, hell I'm learning as i go with pretty much everything.
This is just a test, ill upload a rigged model to get (cough) feedback from you guys. :p

Thanks for the support blueglitchman.

This weekend I will get my hands on three tripods and 3 digital cameras. Ill then be able to take exact instances of people to make the textures for these models as flawless as possible.

The T stance I have them with is a little hard for me to rig correctly without adding a lot of deforms. That is something I don't want to do, as ill have to do it for each model seperatly. So i'll be giving these guys a more natural relaxed stance that will hopefully be more appropriate.

Expect new updates onling mid next week.

nice, although i think it might be better if you had their hands as "mittens"

i mean, like on most game models they only have the palm, thumb and and extruded bit for all 4 remaining digits left to texture and shaping~

might look better/more natural imo ;)

ok, after sitting on my arse for a month (being scared off by the whole rigging process), I've came back to this project. Hopefully, GOD WILLING I will finish these characters off.

Cool thanks Blueglitchman, thats what I need, people to tell me where I can improve this character's rig or mesh.

P.S. The deformations suck, I'm new to the whole rigging process, this is my first rig which doesn't have verts flying off in all random directions.

its good... not a lot of deformations are needed in a background character ;) I suggest trying what irloading said, it might work better. Good luck and thanks again.
