View Full Version : 2-MINUTE FILM CLUB-Chase : Archer (animation)WIP

06 June 2005, 01:03 PM
ok i really want to do this and hope i finish in time. to make things easier for me im going to use the models from my short movie but totally remake the landscape, make an enemy ship and go crazy with it.

so the story is- there's a ship flying around some what low to the ground looking for something when all of a sudden another ship comes out of no where and attacks it. it starts shooting them like crazy with missles and chases them for a while, until the ship is hit and the 2 girls bail out on the hover bikes with the enemy ship still chasing them until the "finale"

im going to put up my storyboards later today but warning: they aren't very good

and i'll post wips as i can.

06 June 2005, 03:17 PM
ok here's a small update, im still working on the storyboards but i have the entire move planned out in my head.

here are the characters i plan on using, they where made before for my first short and im reusing them

here is one of the ships, im going to start modeling the ship that attacks this one today

and here is the hover bike that the girls will ride on once their ship gets shot down

for the enviroment i was something green with lots of trees and interesting landscape with a few ruins here and their.

06 June 2005, 06:07 PM
Cooool! :buttrock: Awesome work, dude! A suggestion: How about moving the handlebars forward and further apart so she has to lean forward, closer to the bike. This bike is built for speed so the rider needs to be as close to the bike as possible. :buttrock: :buttrock: :buttrock:

albertbarrera - thanks for comments !

ok so i've been modeling the other ship i need, and so far i've made this test animation with it.

i know the animation sucks because i didn't change the settings in the curve editor and thats why it slows down in the end. but anyways.... (

once this model is done i'll start with the hardcore animating!

06 June 2005, 03:07 PM
Nice work, so far, man. Looks good.

06 June 2005, 07:08 PM
wow looks like i have a fan  lol

thanks again for the support albert

well here's a pic of the first shot, i really need to upload the story boards but i need to finish the end first.

well enjoy 1 test.jpg

06 June 2005, 07:13 PM
hey im of one of members of archers team working on the cloud car right now .
i know the uvw isnt perfect but weare really rushing this to meet the deadline so im going to overlook a few things. its going to have an overall weatherd out sinister look.

06 June 2005, 11:36 PM
ok franklyn is out, i give him 1 model to texture and makes a big fuss about it so i'll just do it myself, expect updates soon!

06 June 2005, 12:22 AM
ok update time, i've started animating and so far i have made 2 shots.

the "idle" time in the begining is where title and info will go.

note these are not renders they are viewport previews.

ok crits and comments welcomed ( remember right click and save target as

06 June 2005, 04:52 AM
I quite enjoyed the previews you have so far, man. Being I'm not an animator I don't make a good crit but as far as keep my attention and anticipating what's gonna happen next, you're on the right track.

One cool feature on that missile about to strike the ship would be a blinking red light - blinking slow at first as it hunts for the ship then blinking faster and faster as it nears it. I know you're on a tight time limit, though, so I wouldn't sweat the small stuff if it's gonna slow you down.

Great job so far! :bounce:

pretty cool.

but the camera moves seem a bit jagged to me

06 June 2005, 09:59 PM
albert - good idea! im going to try to do that. thanks!

scott - thanks i've fixed the cameras so they're smoother now so i'll try and upload a low res render with out AA to show.

ok todays update! started working on shot 3, its where the missile hits the ship. its not done yet.

things to be fixed:
- the explosion
- shake up the ship
- smoke trail from the ship
- add light to the explosion

you can see what i've made so far - (

did you do an animatic?

07 July 2005, 08:24 PM
no but i plan out the shots before i do them, i do the storyboard as i go, thats why i haven't uploaded it yet...

07 July 2005, 11:19 PM
ok update! update!

here it is, shot 1,2 & 3 rendered (at low res and no AA) and put together! in shot one there are a few very noticable render errors but just ignore that.... ( right click save target as

tomorrow i'll work on the next shot with the introduction of the bad guy! and the destrution of the ship oh la la !

crits and comments always welcomed !

07 July 2005, 01:34 AM
That's interesting but i found it a little bit confusing.

07 July 2005, 12:15 AM
ZaKKoS - once its all done it won't be confusing (i hope)

ok todays update, i fixed some problems in the older shots but didn't rerender them out. but i did start working on shot 4, where the cloud car aka bad guy makes its intro, the following shots will be the space ship getting destroyed and the girls escaping.... enjoy ! (

no but i plan out the shots before i do them, i do the storyboard as i go, thats why i haven't uploaded it yet...

archer... make it easy on yourself plan out a story board and animatic BEFORE you start working and rendering

07 July 2005, 01:28 PM
ZaKKoS - once its all done it won't be confusing (i hope)

I hope it for you too! I just wanted to give you my feedback about it. Anyway if you want i tell you what for me is confusing. Keep up the good work dude!

07 July 2005, 03:58 PM
thanks ZaKKoS, sure tell me whats confusing you so i can fix it

07 July 2005, 04:01 PM
scott, i do plan the story boards before i work on a shot, but i have never done an animatic before(didn't know much about them....), but i will do them in the future. thanks for the tips! im still new at movie making :p

07 July 2005, 04:57 PM
it's cool... learning is what we are all here for.

I have directed quite a few works and got sso used to animatics that I couldn't live without them... it makes everything so much easier.

07 July 2005, 05:08 PM
Ok, forgive me if it sounds harsh. It's because i'm not elegant in writing!

First thing it's too fast but for me the real problem is represented by the camera movements.

For me there are too many of them especially in some scenes like during the presentation of the ship all that back and forth is unnatural.
I liked the intro a la star wars but then, for me, you have to let the viewers focus the ship, or at least make a single movement around the ship going slightly down (actually to where you already made it finish) and after that (the timing is already good for me) you let the ship go away. You did it more like this in the first shot i saw (the one with the "jagged movement")

Ok now this is more like a personal preference. I noticed another camera movement when the ship is gone which i didn't like a lot.
It looked to me like a movement forward and then back again. Probably i would have done it like a waving up and down with a little banking according to the up and down (obviously if this was your intent!).
For the missile scene is pretty the same. a little fast and with too many camera movements.

Now that i've said the "bad things" I have to tell you that your models are awesome:buttrock:
(I've seen your previous movie!)

07 July 2005, 10:04 PM
this is good advise.
planing is very important nd once you get it down on paper you will find thaat the whole process becomes a lot smoother.

if you want to try a good execise, watch some of your favorite movies and then draw out the main action is story board.
you will start to understand a great deal, be able to set up a lot of your animations and know that they make sence before you even touch the computer.

07 July 2005, 04:30 PM
thanks for the wonderful tips i will try and fix all the problems i can before the deadline.

07 July 2005, 05:54 PM
ok i worked on shot 3 some more, im still working on it but here's an update.... i have to hustle only 9 days left !

shot 3
more updates tonight !

07 July 2005, 10:27 PM
ok i started on shot 5, its the ship getting hit by 2 more missiles and breaking apart.
the next shot will be the girls escaping on their bikes after that the evil ship chases them.... ( right click and save as!

07 July 2005, 11:41 PM
here's another update, i couldn't work on it much the last 2 days because i was busy, but i plan to get alot done tomorrow since its the weekend.

i started adding some particle effects. expect more updates tomorrow ( right click and save target as

07 July 2005, 12:45 PM
i started production rendering of the scenes that i have finished so far (1-5)

now im going to try finish the rest of the shots, a few left...

and im planning if i have enough time left to do some cockpit shots to give the movie more character!

07 July 2005, 05:40 PM
ok here's a quick preview image of shot 6 !

renders in 1min and 14seconds test.jpg
Enjoy !

07 July 2005, 11:50 PM
hope im not just talking to myself :p

well here's some work on shot 6, it still has alot of work left to do.
i know the camera sucks right now, the character animation needs more work, i plan on adding some small explosions and other stuff.

but i would like to share anyways. (

well enjoy! crits and comments welcomed! 4 days left..... im not sure if i can finish on time.......

Hey mate,
I just watched your film. It must have been a LOT of work! Good job. I like the design of the two characters (the yellow and red armored one). My only crit would be there is not much storytelling. It's a great piece anyway.
I wish you luck.

07 July 2005, 05:32 PM
thanks man, i had alot planned for this short but time was my enemy and it won, that means i had to cut out alot of what i wanted to do, thus losing most of the story :(

good luck to you too!

07 July 2005, 08:10 AM
not bad  who is that music in the background? its pretty good, reminds me of this german band.

07 July 2005, 11:35 AM
