OK I thought I'd leave the first post formal and make changes when necessary.

I did a tiny trial yesterday and today, I had my boyfriend with for support. I haven't sketched for ages so I'm not as good and fast as I was expecting.

A things or two I noticed about the London tube (subway):

I was scared that people might understand I'm drawing them and not be happy about it. But it rarely happens, everyone is minding their own bussiness...
Sketching on the tube can be bit of a task it gets very shaky, I couldn't make my lines straight. I guess it depends the line you're on and the driver. I'm thinking the Jubilee line would be the less shaky one. I tried the Bakerloo which was okish and Victoria this morning which was a nightmare.

feel free to pm me to add more things on the list.

06 June 2005, 01:44 PM
here we go. Bobby I'd appreciate any comments. As I said it takes time for me at the mo. And my lines are not straight..Also I'm not sure I depict all of the faces correctly. What I also enjoy is to think who the people are. For example the woman on the first sketch had the grace and stance of a dancer although she aged she is still proud. Finally I need to buy a scanner. ( ( (

06 June 2005, 01:49 PM
wow, anim_ziggy, there you go, good one

one question though, is all this subway sketch done inside the tube?

06 June 2005, 01:53 PM
yup inside the tube. hence the shaky lines eheh.

06 June 2005, 03:41 AM

anim_ziggy - hey great! I think the lady with the pearls is your best drawing. Here's a tip on drawing hair. It tends to lose detail when hit by direct light and gain detail in the parts where there's partial shadow. So in my example I drew the details of the hair where it lay in shadow and then left no detail where the light directly hits the hair. It creates more volume this way.

06 June 2005, 09:39 AM

Heh yes she is my favourite sketch too. Ironically enough she was my first one! You really made her look as she really was he he. I find it easier to sketch people that have something extreme on their facial features!

I'm glad I started. Def. doing it next w/e again.

Thank you so much for the feedback. Your work is really inspiring!

06 June 2005, 04:48 PM
Noone seems to be interested! Arghhhh. Well I ll do it again this weekend. It will be Sunday on some point. Hmmmm. Thinking, when and where... Will post time later.

06 June 2005, 08:40 PM
OK, slight changes. Seems I will be on my own so I'm changing the subway thing a bit with Regents Park.
As I said if I don't get PM's I don't wait. :deal:

But I'm betting all of you Londoners are enjoying the warm weather somewhere...

06 June 2005, 08:58 PM
I would be there in a second if it wasnt for i lived in nottingham.. its been to bllody hot here

06 June 2005, 10:26 AM
I woke up this morning and my flat is so warm (balcony door open) and I feel ike I'm in a sauna  It's boiling.

06 June 2005, 12:06 PM
yeah, i think i might be able to make it sometime.

sean, 15

06 June 2005, 02:09 PM
anim_ziggy - It's so great that you're doing this. I've been going to Bobby Chiu's Toronto sketch group since the beginning... when it was freezing cold. A lot of times it was just the 2 of us at first but it really caught on now. Keep at it! You'll learn a lot from Bobby Chiu. I know i have

06 June 2005, 04:25 PM
anim_ziggy - no problem. I'm glad I can help. Sounds like y'all melting over there! lol... it's getting pretty hot over here as well :)

06 June 2005, 04:04 PM
guys, last sunday was a disaster... Made a few sketces wihich I ll post but then I had to leave cos the grass and pollen caused my allergic asma to increase a lot.
Been recovering and visiting doctors since then. Thank God for antihistamines.

digital_robert: thanks again. you can't imagine, although I come from Greece which is at least 35 celcious atm, I always have a solution there... Have a swim at the sea... Argh, I miss that..

Kei Acedera: thanks for your encouraging words!

tied: As I said on my first post: PM if you can make it. Even it is last moments motice I have internet at home and I will always check it before I leave.

06 June 2005, 08:33 PM
i'm pretty sure i can make it, i don't tend to do much except draw with my free time anyway. it's just a matter of where and what time. i don't suggest using the tube, it's possibly the roughest ride possible. i'm pretty sure i can drag a friend along too

06 June 2005, 08:29 AM
you are right about the tube. it's a nightmare, i can't stand it even for a couple of stops. Any ideas about where to go instead?

06 June 2005, 12:50 PM
due to a bad asthma attack last night I won't be able to do it it this sunday.

06 June 2005, 01:59 PM
ouch. get well soon!

here are some suggestions:

hyde park
regents park
covent garden
oxford street
leicester square
south bank
trafalgar sq.
picadilly circus

i'll think of more later. part of the appeal of the original subway sketch group is that you get to sit down for a long time and just draw anyone who comes near you. unfortunately, london subway/tube is terrible for drawing, so we might have to warp the cause of the sketch group to something else. tube isnt a good idea.

a walk through central london could take us to most of the spots mentioned above rather quickly. this requires some more thought.

06 June 2005, 03:23 PM
Thanks. Apparently I'm allergic to grass a lot...
yeah sounds good, especially covent garden or south bank, we can easily sit down and draw the passers by!
By all means if you want to do some sketching tomorrow, do so; and post them here :+)

07 July 2005, 09:45 AM
Cool, would be great to meet up.

Covent Garden woddl probably be the best bet, becuase people usually stand around for a while in the same spot watching the street performers

The subways here are way too shakey to draw on :(

07 July 2005, 09:06 AM
OK, I'm back amongst the normal breathing people again.. he he
This Sunday Convent Garden. Time and meeting point to be announced shortly!

07 July 2005, 02:34 PM
UPDATE ( of the announcements post.

And don't forget PM me if you're coming.

07 July 2005, 07:00 PM
I hope you are all ok. I was struck with the news about the recent tragedy in London and thought of you all right away. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time.

07 July 2005, 09:02 PM
Yeah, pretty crazy here right now.. thnks for the message :)

My hometown is edmonton! Maybe i'll meet up with your guys sketch group when i am over for vacation if it still runing!

07 July 2005, 08:52 AM
Thanks for your concern BirdyBear. It has been pretty crazy but we (me and my bf) did dare to get on the tube this morning! The only thing we did is that we left very early to avoid the rush hour and we ended up having a coffee in a completely empty central London. I must say it was a bit surreal because everyone on the carriage was reading the Metro that had all the horrific pictures from yesterday’s events.

So, 3D Knight, you coming this Sunday? Hopefully everything will be OK considering yesterdays events.

07 July 2005, 09:26 AM
Hope all was well for the people in England, pretty scary since we in Australia are close allies, I think its only a matter of time before something like this happens here too =(

07 July 2005, 12:08 PM
I just wanted to say how sorry I am about the tragedies that have occured in your city. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

07 July 2005, 12:44 PM
bobby and magic man thank you!

07 July 2005, 12:48 PM
I hope you guys are ok.

07 July 2005, 05:33 PM
thank you Roberto, as far as I know all the people I know in London are ok!

p.s. Guys THIS SUNDAY don't forget! Convent Garden! 15:00. And if you're coming PM me.

07 July 2005, 07:36 AM
this was what I did on the last lonely Sunday, I was shocked to see Covent Garden not as busy as usual. (

08 August 2005, 02:50 PM

Hi all!

Even if there aren't any sketches coming out of London, at least you're still communicating on this forum! Haha... Well, sketching doesn't take long, you just have to sit down and do it, that's all. Maybe this will help stay a little motivated:

I've put together a Subway Sketching Blog ( on my site where I plan to collect and show work from sketch groups all over. Come check it out! If you want me to also post your group's work on the blog, just email us to join the blog (! :)

Hope to hear from you next week!

04 April 2007, 08:19 AM

05 May 2007, 11:16 PM
anymore events happening, I am moving to london soon. It looks like a pretty nice gathering

05 May 2007, 11:19 PM
here is what is happening soon

most of the regular Bobby Chius London user group are now participating to this Meetup meeting.

11 November 2007, 03:10 PM
Hey there,

Ah saw this ages ago and mean't to join, but never got round to it. Finally found the thread again! Do you do it every week or just whenever theres enough people.

Me and possibly my girlfriend would like to join!

Thanks! : )

11 November 2007, 03:37 PM
Hey it's been a while I ve done it as there wasn't any interest but if we get some people together i m happy to organsize it again. Not this weekend though as I'm away. But we could arrange something perhaps soon.

11 November 2007, 04:01 PM
I'd be up for it :)

11 November 2007, 04:23 PM

Just saw the post above for this. Do most of the group do this instead now?

I'd be up for either this or doing a underground/museum sketch group thingy. I'm a member of the shoreditch life drawing soc which is pretty good for life drawing - tho costs about 7 quid for 2 or so hours.

I also can't do this weekend as my sis is down. but would be interested in the future if we can get some people!

: )

11 November 2007, 12:25 PM
i would love to join too if anyone is organizing. !!

11 November 2007, 12:26 PM
well the members have been random never had standard ones (and u would have thougt London one would be the biggest one) So yeah I haven't managed to go on the artmeetup as I always end up staying late at work or too far to go etc... London can suck sometimes....

lets talk about it next week I m happy with anything really, ah almost forgot we never really did tubes as when I organised it was still fresh with all the bomb attacks etc so we did squares, museums, coffee shops etc

11 November 2007, 12:32 PM
In someways i prefer the idea of doing it out and about london rather than on the tube. Tube systems are better in many other countries and i find londons one to be both depressing and confining. Thats why i normally use bus or overground trains.

Did people often notice you drawing them and if so what was their reaction?

11 November 2007, 12:44 PM
they were staring a bit and a couple of them looked offended... you know how Londoners are...

yeah London tube is too compact so people always notice you, unless you get on the District Line and be lucky and get on a new train...

01 January 2008, 01:29 PM
so is there any sketch group happening soon?

01 January 2008, 02:31 PM
guys i will back in london mid feb, doing some freelance gigs and then got a trip in asia. why don,t u meet up!

03 March 2008, 06:05 PM
i wanna start a sketch group in London, anyone interested joining

03 March 2008, 08:49 PM
i'd be interested :)

03 March 2008, 08:51 PM
anyone particular subject or location you guys will be interested in? It can be an outdoor sketch group, doesn't have to a be underground

03 March 2008, 09:01 PM
it was outside when i was doing it... so busy these days... guys if u do it ill try to join u for old times shake :)

03 March 2008, 04:21 AM
Can you guys suggest a time and place we can do this. I never organize such event before. ;)

03 March 2008, 10:56 AM
well look at the first post of the thread that's how i went about organising the details... usually it was on Saturday as people prefered it and places like Trafalgar square etc...really depended on the weather... i ll try to make it if i got the time :+)

03 March 2008, 09:47 PM
Im intrested. :)

This would of been a good day to go

03 March 2008, 06:17 PM
do you think they can freeze long enough for us to draw them :) ? Does this happen regularly, or just a one off thing?

03 March 2008, 06:22 PM
ha ha that would have been a great day out drawing... never heard of it before... oh and guys i would recommend the figure drwaing on meet up but they can be a bit pricey :(

so how's the organising going?

03 March 2008, 06:25 PM
So how many of your are interested?
Can you guys do it on a weekday?

03 March 2008, 06:39 PM
WELL when i was doing it was weekend as i was working full time... now it really depends on the freelance project i m on!!! so i can't promise when i m free or not but as i said i d try to join for old times shake. next week i think i m free friday.

03 March 2008, 10:02 PM
So how many of your are interested?
Can you guys do it on a weekday?

I'd be up for it!
I can do weekdays, but only at lunchtimes or after work (17:00/18:00).
Weekends are generally fine :)

03 March 2008, 10:24 PM
doublepost :(

03 March 2008, 02:15 AM
ok, at least we got 3 now. ;p
i think we should decide a location first before we sit down and arrange a time that we can all show up.

04 April 2008, 06:22 PM
hey new to this forum was wondering if theres gonna be any new, recent sketching sessions. I live in Bristol and Winchester (near Southampton) so not too far away from London if it does take place there, anyone else in?

04 April 2008, 06:24 PM
Hey new to the forum, was wondering if anyones up for a recent sketch sess, i live in Bristol and winchester (near southampton) so not too far away from London if thats where its gonna take place!

06 June 2008, 03:06 PM
hi kyle, i used to live in winchester too.
I have been busy with my other work, now I have sunday open up everyweek.
There are anyone here in the forum can do sunday?

06 June 2008, 11:08 AM
guys i m not in london atm but as i said you're welcome to start again. I will be back late july If you got something going I ll definatelly join.

10 October 2008, 04:35 PM
I know the idea of a London sketch group seems to have died, but if anyone is still up for a communal sketch there's a SketchCrawl on October 25th (Saturday).

Might be a good starting place to gather some people up for a sketch group :)

01 January 2009, 09:19 PM
is this thing still functioning? I would be very intrested in this. :p
