It's the only common video format that runs on all the platforms they support (Windows, Linux, Irix, Solaris) which allows them to compress videos to a small size while still maintaining legible on screen text.

What's wrong with RealOne? I've never had any problems with it. In fact, I would say it crashes less than QuickTime.

Most people have an aversion to Real because they collect information from you. But, you can watch the videos offline, so what's the problem? Besides, it's pretty amazing that they were able to fit something like 6 or 7 hours of video into 320 megs, and you can still pretty much read the screens.
