is it possible to create really realistic fire with particles in max without using plugins (or at least without using plugins you have to pay for) i worked through the video tutorial of allanmckay ( and its not bad but it just looks too dotty and i would like to have a realistic fire without using motion blur afterwards to make it look good

i found a tutorial that makes really nice looking fire but its not for max so im wondering cant you do sth like that with max??? heres the link to that tutorial

im using max 7
thx ppl

Well, one of the best plugins at the market at this time must be Aura. With aura you can create quite realistic flames. Try out the tutorial if such still exists.
Take a look at this site:
You could also try to use Afterburn, but I think you would be more happy with your resoults using Aura.

aura is great, but currently unavailable -- they stopped the public beta testing. Phoenix is the only one available right now, but the book called "deconstructing the elements with 3ds max 6" has some really good fire tutorials... without the use of plugins ('cept pflow) check out the site:

that's right, although a friendly e-mail to chaosgroup could help recieving a new version.

aura is by now the most sophisticated tool for really realistic fire sims i know... at least if u want to produce fire and smoke for compositing into live footage, where afterburn or phoenix would have problems to match the movement, shape, boyancy, characteristic turbolences, expansion and so on... of existing real fire for instance.

the basic approach makes it powerful, cause it simulates basicly the air, its temperature and speed. thats damn near to the burning process in real life.

the problem is that its hard to control and doesn't work on a particle basis, where one can exactly predetermine the shape, speed and life of the sim.. to put it in other words: u have to have much experience with it in order to use it fast.
