Really new to vue, but I think you can save a terrain as an object and the perform a boolean operation. The effectiveness of this would depend on the effect you're trying for.
Maybe someone more knowledgeable will be able to help with this, but thought I'd try...

that helps alot thanks. i saw it on a tutorial too so will try it. just one question remains and that it how do you turn the terrain into an object

Not sure what you want a do, but there's a couples of ways to do hole Fx with terrain,
Ok, the boolean thing was described already.
The remaining question. You always can export a terrain - even in Vue 4 it is possible - and re-import it as an object later again. To convert it to a normal object.
But why do you want to do that?

I have both Vue and Bryce. I loved Bryce until it was abandoned. Vue however will do anything your used to doing in Bryce. You can export anything as an .obj. You may also find as I have that Bryces terrain editor is still one of the best around. Bryce terrains can also be exported as an object and used in Vue. Bryce exports terrains perfectly and the terrain tools in Bryce are superior in my oppinion. Vue however does much better renders. After Bryce Vue takes some getting used too. I strongly recomend you take the time to go through the manual. Also pick up everything you can about rendering strategies. Vue will do renders equal to Bryces best in way less time than you are used to. High quality anti-aliasing is tricky though and can increase render times by many times so use it with care. Vue also requires the best graphics cards money can buy if you want to use open GL. Vue eats graphics cards alive. Give the GI lighting a try (and HDRI if you have 5) and you will probably stop using Bryce for render.

You don't need to bake your terrain to a polygonal object to apply a boolean operation to it.
You can also use the terrain editor to create the hole, with the brush tool.
