Is there a tutorial link or a quick solution to fusing background paintings mapped on planes with 3d objects in the foreground?

Besides using gradient maps/mapping hemispheres how can i achieve the look of a horizon without it looking like its a 90 deg edge upon rendering?

Or does it only come in the compositing stages?
