anyone have suggestions on a good book or two that specifically deal with lighting and rendering schemes? or some of the basics of great lighting techniques?

I'd recommend Jeremy Birn's book - but I'm sure he'd like to recommend it himself :D

...but on a more serious note:

These are the two that I own that deal strictly with cg lighting they're both
pretty good, but I think Jeremy Birn's is more practical.

I haven't found any good books on traditional lighting techniques yet. Maybe someone
can recommend some.

I second that. In fact, this book played a big part in helping me learn lighting. I would strongly recommend getting books on composition if you want to be good at lighting. Setting up lights in CG is EASY, but knowing where to put a light at what intensity and at what color is something that you can only learn by learning composition & color theory.
