Hi everyone in softimage land, greetings from way up in Lightwave land!

I will be doing some work in xsi with thier new hair stuff. I'm a shave and a haircut owner so i know all of joe's tips and tricks on the hair side. I'm having some problems with xsi anti aliasing and lighting....

1: is there an ambient light in xsi, is it the default one that is active when you 1st start a scene or is there another global ambient?

2: what exactly does the -1,2 numbers mean in the AA settings?

my 1st experiment in XSI hair:

i totally need help on the lighting and AA.

If anyone has any questions about shave/hair i can probably answer them, ive been using Shave for about a year.

Hi Mike,

1: is there an ambient light in xsi, is it the default one that is active when you 1st start a scene or is there another global ambient?

there's no Ambient *light*, but there's a global ambient
setting for the scene, it's in the <render> module, under the <modify> column.. just set the ambient color.
each material has an ambient color as well, but if you set
the global ambient color to black (0,0,0) there's no effect
for the material ambient..

2: what exactly does the -1,2 numbers mean in the AA settings?

AA in xsi works like this.. for hi-quality usually dont use negative numbers, I use 0,2 and Gaussian 3,3. the 0,2 numbers affects
more the outlines of the models, while the Gaussian numbers
affect the texture noise and bump. the higher the difference
between the numbers , the better the quality- but render time
goes up.. for previews you can use -2,1 or -1,1 or even -3,0 for
crappy AA :) sometimes 0,1 Gaussian 3,3 could be enugh as well for final render.
the higher the Gaussian numbers are, the more blury the textures
on the model would be..

sorry for the messy explanation :) hope it helps in some way

Your hair is looking good !

I know you offered some advice on shave/hair, but is there any chance you'd be able to post some tips on XSI hair when you've finished your project?

BTW your web-site's great !

Most of the tips i could give can be found in one form or another on the Shave/Lipservice yahoo mailing list, or the docs from shave on Jow Alters site. I have problem posting some tips of my own when im done...

Did rendering take a long time or did you do it as a pass for the hair?

try to render it with final gathering, i would love to see the differense!
in my case all the hair turns black

I think your bear has been playing in the mud cause he looks kind of dirty in some areas; you better give him a good nice warm shower…:D

Just kidding. It’s really nice pictures you’ve got there…

do you use a texture map to chane the color in different parts of the bear or do you just chane the shaders in different sections on the bear?
