I want to try an experiment for one week.
The idea is that a movie Title will be mentioned (Real or Fictional), and we will design
equipment, costumes and environments. As always we will have only a day.

"I, Robot - Steampunkstyle"

And dont forget to post your topics HERE: Production Desing Week. (

I've been wanting to get back into the swing of things here in the sketch group. So, here's my coming out of hibernation contribution. About 45min. Yeah, I'm slow. SO?!.. :) I'd like to devote more time to it and finish, but I have other things I need to get done. (

what's steampunkstyle?

05 May 2005, 11:58 PM
Octothreat - " what's steampunkstyle?"

I don't know where the term came from - but think late 1800's.

05 May 2005, 12:01 AM
what's steampunkstyle?

From the Wikki:
Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction (, usually set in an anachronistic ( Victorian ( or quasi-Victorian alternate history ( setting. Fiction in the steampunk genre is set in the past, or a world resembling the past, in which modern technological paradigms occurred earlier in history, but were accomplished via the science already present in that time period. The genre typically falls into the realm of science fiction (

If you do a google image search for "steampunk" you'll see some images of that style...

i still dont really know but i think it's term used in old fantasy books to decribe robots and fantasy machines example "league of extraordinary gentlemen" The Car and boat/Ship

Photoshop 30 min

this was originaly just a little warm up sketch, i wish i had more time to do something better.

05 May 2005, 01:41 AM
Steampunk stuff is so much fun to draw. You can mix Sci-Fi and fantasy to your hearts content ^_^. Here's a bot I did with just pen and pencil. Took maybe 1.5-2 hours.

Hiya Guys and Gals,

Great stuff already

Back in the 1800 Miners and a scientists got together to create the ultimate mining machine called "I MECHONOLOGY MAN". This was a mild success but due to a massive cave-in the prototype was lost so they abandoned the idea and went into developing the steam powered Bulldozer which was a big success....HEHE!

splinepusher - yup, its not "steam driven/1800's" enough - but DAMN! that is really great work!

In fact, EVERYONE's entries so far ROCK! Really excellent work y'all.

I can never get my robots to look right, so I'll sit this one out and pat of of you on the back for a job well done!

Taken from the idea in I, Robot about the machine destroying it's master. With a little dark humour added for fun.
15 min, Photoshop

05 May 2005, 09:30 AM
I love this theme... Didn't have a huge amount of time (the concept skecthes here took about 45mins... photoshop included). Have covered the robot design and also loosely the design of the character that would replace the role played by will smith in the original movie..

05 May 2005, 12:24 PM

Painter, 1 hr.

05 May 2005, 07:48 PM
Painter - 2 hours

05 May 2005, 08:15 PM
umm.. it's my first pic in the daily sketch group :) kinda.. close to the topic, i hope.. it actually is sort of self portrait too ;) done in painter 7 and photshop 7 (for some touch-up's).. took 35mins..

05 May 2005, 08:31 PM
great work everyone!

here's my attempt: a steampunk-substitute for the high-tech robots,
steam-cyborgs, just poor people that are held as slaves and controlled
by those superevil steamthingys they wear :)

alright, back to studying ... two hard weeks of work ahead

05 May 2005, 10:40 PM
redherring, fantastic! It reminds me a lot of John R. Neill's work for all the Oz books by L. Frank Baum. Really neat robot.

05 May 2005, 11:26 PM
nice pictures of steam robots are thy in the new starwars too?

05 May 2005, 11:26 PM
Incredible andrewley!

Only 35 minutes vinegaria? VERY nice!

05 May 2005, 02:18 AM
Andrewley - usual! :)

Vinegaria - Welcome to the DSG! Really super sketch!

05 May 2005, 05:31 AM
I'd never heard the term before today. Now I'm in love with it. This was really fun.
Wasn't trying for a portrait of Will Smith, but I did look at a photo of him for some reference. I did not look at any "Wild Wild West" pics although that's kind of what it ended up looking like.

Anyway, here it is - about 2 hrs 15 min. Pencil sketch underlay then redrew it in Photoshop.

05 May 2005, 08:33 AM
that's great chris! I really like the robot, sweet values and a good ole hat for the Man with the Gun.

05 May 2005, 07:02 PM

Robots are fun to draw :D

05 May 2005, 08:49 PM
Crazy, that is freakin' awesome!

Great work all, man these topics rock.

05 May 2005, 09:12 PM
My entries were too positive lately, so its time to give them some dark boost.
(the picture has nothing to do with the book/movie, though)
Photoshop, 40min

05 May 2005, 10:07 PM
Gosh, thanks a lot Art2. That means a lot.

Her0d - cool sketch. Very ominous mood. Actually I think there is a part early in the book where there is a robot nanny. So, you could say your sketch is inspired by the book.

05 May 2005, 11:04 PM
hehe, I doubt Robbie wore a trench coat, though

05 May 2005, 07:08 AM
Thanks, Crazy3dMan :-) As for the inspiration - apart of this fragment of the book (which I just, of course, forgot to mention;-) ), I just noticed that the robot is very similar to Bender from Futurama. I always thought that Futurama robots are very 'steam-punk' style...

05 May 2005, 06:05 PM
Another great thread! Lot's of really cool entries.

My little Robo is taking a break from work, at the local Coal restaurant.
Painter & Photoshop - Spent around 3 hours on it. Think i'll finish it some time.
