Thank you! Don't know why that registered twice.. but I'm a forum idiot.

Second progress sketch. Still noodling and trying to solidify concept. Getting there.

I guess one could call this line art. I don't really work with traditional line art, so I'm not sure if this disqualifies me or not. I tend to paint and draw at the same time with Corel, so I'm sort of sticking to line-ish stuff for now and going into the painting next, I hope. Gack, I hope I'm doing this correctly..

Starting to block in some color and bring out a bit of detail.

More color.. More "what the hell am I doing..?"

Nice drawing, although the human seems a bit laid back about having his (brains?) sucked out. Keep up the good work

05-11-2005, 02:45 AM
Thank you so very much for your kind and supportive words; I am hoping the human's demeanor will be made more clear as the image progresses. I took a look at your artwork; I envy your ability to do such clean line work. The hands in particular are beautifully done. I can't wait to see where you go with this.

Again, thanks! I pretty much know no one around here..

Beginning to lay in head contours..

One word for this WICKED! nice piece but Hurry I dont want you to miss it. Peace :buttrock:

05-11-2005, 08:15 PM
Thank you! I don't think there is any way in hell I'll be able to finish it on time; I'm already starting to cut corner.. Blech.

Are you a Texas native or misplaced? ;) I hail from West Texas, though with Idiot Child in the White House, I tend not to say too much about it.

expanding canvas size; reworking critter; still don\'t like it, but I\'m running out of time! Main elements mostly roughed in. I\'ll try to get the background going tomorrow. On a sad note, my Wacom is dying. There\'s a spot on it that has seen so much drawing, it\'s a wonder it reads at all. Of course, it\'s pushing 9 years old.. sigh.

Still more canvas added; foot and right hand roughed in; beginning to add some of the props. Is anyone else as bonetired as I am?? My husband thinks I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ve been stolen by fairies.

Some detailing on skull. Went back to first critter. Using Corel PhotoPaint 9, dimensions of original: 25" by something.

nice work.
cool idea and painting!
love ur detail a lot.:bounce:
keep it up!

05-13-2005, 02:29 AM
Thanks! A high compliment coming from someone so talented..

05-13-2005, 03:11 AM
Nice concept so far. I wish u the best of luck!

05-13-2005, 04:23 AM
Thanks! By the way, I was looking at your image earlier today, and thinking I liked the watery version better. That said, I don't know where you are goling with the tower, and a very sleek polished monolith could be a good foil for the very shepherdly look of the crowd. If that makes sense. Anyway, that's my two-cents' worth. The very best of luck with the Challeng!

No one can every accuse me of working smart! This Challenge has been an exercise in \\\"oh my god\\\", why did I do that? It\\\'s surely been fun, though..

More work; pulling some of the background/setting into the scene. Changed critter *again*, but getting there.

You know, one would think I\'d be smart enough to have laid my perspective guidelines in much earlier, but as I said, no one every accused me of working smart.. sigh.

Latest. Hands pretty much done, pose for right changed and wacom pen added. My husband asked me if I were going to draw the new pens, and I said, no, I'm going for the vintage look. (translation: I wouldnt' know a new wacom pen if it sat down beside me at dinner..)

I thought I would give some steps on creating the floor in my challenge entry. I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m not sure it will be of any great use to anyone, as everyone seems to have skills locked in with gusto. And.. the program I use is Corel Photopaint 8. A dinosaur. That said.. here\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s what I did:
Top Left: Laid in a perspective grid as near as I could. Then using an image brush I made, simulating a speckled granite look, I filled in the boxes. I was going to get nuts and put in a bunch of stones, but I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m running out of time and the grid alone will have to do. Then I tinted the whole image a grey blue.
Bottom Left: Using the smudge tool, I began to smudge the blocks.
Top Right: Hmm. let me see if I can remember. I saved the floor as an object, pasted it into a blank file, then pasted another copy of the floor object onto that. I dropped the opacity until it had a sort of misty look to it. At this stage, I was going for polished marble, but as I worked, I thought I would prefer to pull some texture out of the floor and have the little ridges and valleys reflect some of the lamp\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s golden light.
Bottom Right: I threw a slight emboss onto, then adjusted the tone slightly. Then I began to burn in the midtones, and finally lay in a tint of that orangey golden color on the high spots, by hand. Here and there I laid in a very light (1%) tint to just give the stones some interest. Last, I took the tone curve down to lend some darkness to the overall feel.
This is my first digital \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"tutorial\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\", so if I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'m leaping around and you need to understand something, please let me know and I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ll try to communicate more clearly!
Thanks for visiting. An extreme closeup of the floor follows..

Closeup of stonework. I tend to work with the notion that people will be at a distance from my images. It works for paintings, but I'm thinking it might be rotten for digital art. hm.
Following is a brief tutorial on how I got to the stone floor if anyone is interested...:)

had to redo the floor as my perspective was off. It turned out to be a happy accident as I like this floor better. You think?

Finally have the \"objects\" masked off so I can manipulate them. Should have done this from the beginning, but that\'s what happens when you plunge in as late as I have. The lamp is off, but will fix it if time allows.

Foot and shadows for stool laid in. mostly. It\'s interesting how time can lay waste to the most grandiose plans, eh? My embroidered vision is dwindling down to minimalist modern..;)

Beginning (I know, I know..) the final form of the flesh. Also realized I haven't put the concept. Duh.
The title is "We Have Always Fed the Muse" and for me, represents the horror and the beauty of the muse's demands. I like to believe it's always been that way for creators. The sucking dry of the brain, yet always sustained somehow to create. I was also thinking that in the muse/artist relationship, the master seems to be the muse, or the drive, but the muse would not be fed if we did not create. So. That's about as profound as I'm going to get tonight..that's all for today. It's going to be a wild and wooly tomorrow for us all. It's like being at a party where everyone has to make his own mask. Furious, fast and furious.
G'night to you all.

Please finish this! You can do it, I know! =)
Great rendering on the head. Nice egyptian tanned/golden skin.

I take that back.. I must have been out of my mind to start this 8 days ago. No way will I pull out the detail I wanted.. but hey.. it's been a terrific roller coaster, and I learned things I didn't even think I needed.

Best to all of you in the Challenge..!
