Latest Update: Coloring WIP: late quick (

Intriguing title it is... I was so excited when I saw the announcement of the challenge, accompanied by the inspirational art ... The brief was even more interesting. I thought that I already had several ideas(at least 4) that already fit the brief. I mean ideas that I thought of and sketched before the challenge.

My first post..

The thing is... I have never finished an image. I usually get too precious about a drawing and fear that it would get ruined at some point.. once I actually start thinking about the drawing I hesitate about adding to it or changing it (and I'm talking early stages here)... sometimes I get so excited about an idea that I don't even draw it lest I do it injustice.

So, more of an incentive to enter the challenge was the idea of having enough drive and motivation to complete an image (atleast).

I was travelling from the 12th of April and only got back to my computer and internet on the 5th of May. To find the the site full of amazing entries for the challenge, with extremely high standards of quality...

And now only 10 days left.. I decided to enter all the same, and try to get the most of it. Hopefully I get to realise all concepts that I put in, and do them justice.

Heh heh... sorry to waffle, fluffle and blabber.. but I was thinking this would be interesting to me even if no one else sees it, so I'm documenting my progress this way... heehee

Many thanx to everyone on the forums for the inspirations already. :)

I'm usually quite protective of my ideas.. ununique as they might be. I also feel that ideas aught to be communicated in the best possible way.. I mean to say in the most effective.. so I apologise if I'm spoiling some ideas for anyone if they hadn't come across them beforehand. Hopefully, i get to do them justice in one way or the other.

05 May 2005, 10:07 PM (

Sketches of some concepts(19-4-2005).. The tree golem idea is one of those ideas that I had thought of before.. I loved it soo much when I was working on it before. Not having done justice, or nearly enough to the idea, I thought of using it as a possibility. Then I thought I want it to be grander, so I thought of using a mountain golem instead :D The top left corner is an axe suited for such a creature, made out of a rock/ cliff face probably..

05 May 2005, 11:45 PM (

The Mountain Golem.. That's the grand scale I intended.. I was thinking about it since the first concept sketch(19-4-2005). I wanted it to be massive and also immensely detailed. On the 5th of May I managed to draw up this sketch. After scanning it in though, I realised that I had a few problems..

05 May 2005, 12:08 AM (

Well... it depends on how you look at it I guess.. Remember, this is a mountain Golem, not a rock golem. So it's supposed to be absolutely HOOOJ. Now that can be a problem if I want the master to be riding it, and I want you to be able to see his face(or atleast see him). I've drawn the master a bit too big here too.

05 May 2005, 12:27 AM (

Here is a close-up along with the actual size. I wanted the actual size to be larger than this. Large enough for me to draw details on the eyes.. heh heh.. look at me asking for trouble.. This I called problem 2 btw; How large can a document be before it's too large( for my compooter atleast)

05 May 2005, 12:42 AM
How large can a document be before it's too large( for my compooter atleast)

It depends on your computer's hardware. Just try and see, you know. :P One tip, if you have too much trouble with the filesize, but still want to get detailed figures is draw them on separate layer, sketch them in, then magnify them 200%, then draw them out, then shrink them back 50%. That way you'll have them more detailed without killing yourself over a miniature brush and excess pixelation. (Although watch the edges, it's easy to get them pixelated in this manner.)

As for the picture in general, have you considered putting them in different perspective? For example, having the little guy stand on the golem's hand or club stretched waaaay in front of the rest of the golem and having the golem tower over the guy in the distance like a huge mountain? That way you will: a) get more interesting perspective, b) be able to show more of the little guy, c) be able to show the scale of the golem.

My 2 cents. ^^

05 May 2005, 07:00 AM
Many thanx for the first post and comments/advice :)

You're absolutely right lady Liiga... Although I have thought of using a different perspective.. I haven't tried it before.

I just had a go at sketching it now, and I think I got the scale wrong, but I should keep trying ;)

This definately needs to be realised somehow into a final piece. However, I did not address problem number 3 yet...

05 May 2005, 08:37 AM
Oops.. sorry I uploaded the wrong image here..

05 May 2005, 08:46 AM (

Ok.. This is a more appropriate size for the master. After all, those are trees on The mountain's back, and so by comparison the guy is much smaller. The top-right corner shows the %100 size. Document size is about 1.76 GB and the compooter takes aaages to do anything.. Although I think I should actually continue this, perhaps partition the image and work on the different parts seperately, or even use the technique suggested.. but did anyone see problem number 3 yet?

05 May 2005, 08:58 AM
Is this the image u goin to paint!??
The master seems like a fruit hanging on the tree...hee kidding..

The mountain gollum idea is indeed the first one i see it here...inspired...
I afraid it cannot express the relationship stronger cuz the master size does matter to me.(maybe not for the others)

This idea is Great for Movie..

Try make a balance contrast between M & S.. (shrink the mountain, maybe?!)

05 May 2005, 09:59 AM
Thanx Dinodog :)

I do think that the idea would be great as a movie(animation) too. I had a go at a test animation, zooming in on the master in Flash.. but I had some problems with it because the file size is so large :( The maximum Document size in flash is 2880 Ũ 2880. Now I should be able to swap the image at different points in the zoom to make it work, but that is also quite a process. Hopefully in the future that is something to do.

Actually my sister reminded me recently that there was a japanese animation that featured some sort of rock/mountain golem. The animation was absolutely brilliant as far as I can remember. We watched it something like 20 years ago, I don't know if anyone is familliar with it. The main character was called something like 'Horse'( we watched it in an arabic dub, very nicely done too) , and he pulls a thorn( an old rusted sword) out of the rock creature's back, and after that he becomes his friend(servant?)...

OooOoOo I'm remembering more of it.. I think the rock golem was kinda thin though.. I wonder if it was a Hayao Miyazaki film.. At some point the guy rides spirit wolves/dragons...

Hey! I found it!:

Takahata's Horus: Prince of the Sun (Taiyo no Ouji Horus no Daibouken 1968)

It was something to do with Hayao Miyazaki after all...Haaahaaahaa.. He was an animator and scene designer on it.

05 May 2005, 10:20 AM (

Here is the attempt at the different perspective. Sorry that it's too sketchy. I think that the golem's hand is too small and the master too big. Or just that the hand needs to be much larger. I should try more..

05 May 2005, 10:46 AM
I thought that it was interesting what Dinodog said about the mountain golem idea being the first. Because what I thought problem 3 was, that it's quite a recurring idea, after having looked through the entries; A huge servant, and a small master riding him. Sure I love the idea, and want to draw plenty more of it, but I thought that I should try something else..

05 May 2005, 11:17 AM (

This is a drawing I did yesterday (08-05-2005)of a rock golem. Although I love the idea, (not as much as the mountain golem mind you)it emphasizes problem 3 more.

05 May 2005, 01:20 PM
Sorry.. another mistake that I couldn't erase :(

05 May 2005, 01:22 PM (

The next series of drawings are inspired by certain events/ a story(true one) and by certain emotions and phrases. It would be interesting if people can relate to the emotions, and even more interesting if they can recognise the story. This image: " I'll guard you with my life my lord" or "May I be your sacrifice my master" (5-5-2005)

05 May 2005, 01:42 PM
In the last sketch the creature steps infront of his master to protect him. He's angry at whoever presented the threat towards his master. Determined to destroy his enemy and to protect his master.. Erm that's the resolve in his face that is supposed to be the idea.

I think that in these concepts, the seemingly non human creatures are actually human but their forms represent the different qualities that they have... I'm talking especially beyond the golem ideas. i.e. these next series of drawings

05 May 2005, 01:56 PM (

Here is a creature rushing forward with rage. His master would be somewhere behind him. Emotions tied to this phrase: " No one shall lay a finger on my master, while I still breath." Or ofcourse it can be rearranged for different affects... not sure which to go for, but I hope you get the idea. Sorry about the sketchy sketch.. it's probably not firce enough yet.

05 May 2005, 02:16 PM (

This is pretty much a quote, except I tried to translate it. Yup, this is from the true story I told you about. There are different detailed accounts I think.. Anyways..Does the image along with the quote mean anything yet, without explanation?

"Who is like me, while my master's cheek is against mine"

05 May 2005, 08:41 PM (

The lions are trying to protect their master and heed his call. Their loyalty unmatched, their bravery unequalled, their rage and ferocity over-whelming... Yet, they shed tears.. Why would anyone want to harm their master? How is it that their master is so unappreciated by those who surround them? And most of all, their feelings that even if they were to give their everything for their master, they are still not giving enough.

05 May 2005, 10:57 PM (

Heh heh.. I think these sketches show how I can quickly get too hesitant and precious about adding more to a drawing..(6-5-2005) The Lions surround their master in the bid to protect him. They lay down their lives for him, while being surrounded by thousands of troops that intend to ... kill him.. {:(

05 May 2005, 01:58 PM
hi, looking through your entry, i want to do a samurai-picture.. i like your interpretation of the master and servant theme a lot: serving the master till death ..loyalty till death.. sounds cool.. go on and finish it!! :bounce:

05 May 2005, 07:37 PM
Thanx lady Benita, I'm happy you liked it.. :) I just hope that I do get to convey the emotions and feelings in images rather than words..

Thanx again, I look forward to seeing your final piece soon ;)

05 May 2005, 11:20 PM (

I've become easily distracted and self-conscious quite quickly it seems.. Even so.. I think that this is the first time I try to place characters in a scene(as much as I can remember). If I have tried it before, then.. well I don't remember it.. {:] I have alot to comment about, story wise, but I think I should save that for a later update(perhaps when the image is clearer).

Hi Laith,

I gather that you are going to work on the "protecting the leader" idea, and not the mountain golem one, so will comment on that one:

Firstly, it is a very nice idea, especially since it shows the appreciation of the servants, but the worthiness of the master (that *they* are willingly sacrificing themselves for him even though he is in a position of weakness, and not exercising any force over them).

However, where is the HUMAN element? I think that is one of the conditions of the M&S challenge (either master or servant should be human)...

Secondly, I think you should add more of the description you have given in words to the image (which is something you pointed out too...). I would suggest you work on the following:

- build up an atmosphere of "loyalty" against "hostility" by showing the viciousness of the enemies, but some sadness in the loyal companions (tears is a good idea for this, as you mentioned).

- make the enemies seem like a wave of aggression coming towards them.. this should give the viewers (us dudes) the feeling of hopelessness in confronting the enemy, but that would not show in the face of the companions (or the leader for that matter)...

- the companion hugging the master is a nice touch (and emphasises the emotions). However, what you could have is the master trying to get up to participate in the battle, but a companion is trying to prevent him. Better yet, you might have the huggy scene, but the master trying to get up at the same time... just to show that he *is* worth the sacrifice in the image itself...

That's my 2 cents... actually, why be modest? That's more than 2 cents worth :-P

Good luck with the competition!

Your bro (literally!),
Ibn Turab

sorry ..i deleted ur email notifications! I got too many of em. It's too many thread to search urs back..
lucky today got "replies" in ur own thread! Now, i am back wif some "kindness" opinions. Hope u won't get mad...haha

It is UNIQUE to get at least a sparkle from over 40 pages of 2D M & S entriesssss !

1) There are oredi a bunch ..uncountless Battle wif enemies + protect the master. Darn it, i am also doin the same concept here...Hard to impress the crowds oredi. There are oredi Too much of similar concept running here. You must be very good & outstanding to the painting to gain "Respect" or u will be miss out in a quick glance.

2) I bet u gonna haf very limited time to paint all these characters in detail(They are too many)..Even though it is not gonna be in ur thought..For me, IT looks pretty hard time to complete It. (FYI, i oredi spent 4 days just to paint 2 characters- still left 10% to complete) I got 4 characters in my M & S. Can u imagine bout ur own piece? You must be determine to do crazy fast painting without eating & sleeping to complete on time..

3) (08-05-2005)of a rock golem. I like this view of ur very First concept! Please Carry on this one! Maybe draw the Golem Holding a broken Tower or smash on a tower wif lotsa bats & enemies escaping of the tower heee...I jst watch LOTR - ROTK yesterday!... Gosh ..waste my another 1 & half hour... I should discipline to rush out my entry..

For ur Flash animation. U can try save a Flash image & bring into Photoshop, give it a RADIAL blur(Try to make zoom in effect). It will bring u a more smooth & impressive -ZOOM IN- strong effect. Flash engine eats up lotsa RAM especially u wanna animate ZOOM IN..

GOOOD LUCK...I will be watching & helping u wif my limited knowledge.. Hope u won't mind.

i hope der is other strong & EVEN useful comments to provide u different views.

05 May 2005, 12:00 PM
Ibn Turab, peace and blessings O beloved brother of mine :D

I'm not sure what you refer to by the human element, because the master is supposed to be the human (only human) in the image holding the fallen lion.

That he should be trying to get up; well that is a good idea.. I thought that he probably should hold a sword as well.. but I thought that it might give the wrong impression, even though I didn't really try. I agree with all of your comments; the feelings of hopelessness, the most hostile viciousness met by the utmost loyalty. I do hope I can incorporate them all.

Many thanx on the comments, lol they are definately worth more than 2 cents :p more like priceless to me ;)

p.s. Did you have any preference towards the mountain golem idea too?

Dinodog Jr... Lol.. well first off, I also recieved alot of e-mail notifications of other threads that I only subscribed to once... and it does get a bit much..

Aww you think that Golem mountain is unique? and that its a sparkle amongst the others? awww many thanx :D Well actually, you are right about the battle scene being repetitive.. only it would have been nice to get that comment sooner :p

I do have very limited time, and unfortunately I have no sense of time and so I leave things late and get distracted quite easily... and not having really built up an image before, I don't really know how much time is needed.

Now... did you like the rock golem or the mountain golem? Because they are quite different  And the rock golem isn't my first concept or the first view of it. But I love that breaking the tower idea ;) very nice... I should actually try that sometime.

The wasting of time thing, I just got distracted with an anime I used to watch in my childhood, and watched 38 episodes from it... thats waaay beyond the 1 or 2 and a half hours  and that wasn't the only distraction...

Many thanx Dinodog Jr, if only your comments came sooner, no one really commented on the preference of ideas before... I hope you do comment more, even though there is so little time left.(well as long as you get your image done aswell ;) , verrry nice so far )

Wishing you the best

I didn't actually realise who the leader was... I thought it was the fallen lion, hence the confusion...

Are there any more images you can add to the thread, just to see how much progress you're making??

Also, you can have the leader holding his sword, with its blade to the ground while he's hunging the fallen dude with the other arm... that could show that it is a last farewell, and he seeks to participate in the battle afterward...

You should also have each of the loyal companions with a unique character, and each making a different stance (e.g. one showered with arrows, one being attacked by more than one enemy, one about to be attacked from behind... etc)... you get what I mean!

And btw, stop watchin animes while you have a competition to work for! You can do that after the deadline!

Dinodude, I think your idea of smashing the tower is very nice, and adds some action to the pic... I can't really add to the comments you mentioned about the mountain golem... but I would prefer the protect the leader pic, since I think it can have more action (unless Laith can play around with perspective, and make the mountain golem idea more interesting by playing with the size difference)...

Also, Dinodog I checked out your thread... great servant image... and doing that with the a mouse is almost miraculous! Best of luck with the challenge...

That is all I have to say dudes...

05 May 2005, 09:23 PM (

Perhaps I got carried away with this , after days of not doing anything on the image... The army that surrounds the master.. well, parts of it anyway.. I think I counted them to be 75, when the army is supposed to top 3000. {:[

05 May 2005, 11:50 PM
wow, this is an army! still 22 hours left to do the coloring! ;)

but donīt worry about that deadline.. but try to finish it anyway.. i mean, if you are really into drawing and stuff it can help a lot to push yourself to finish something.. (backgrounds can be fun too! :))

good luck anyway!

05 May 2005, 12:25 AM
Heh heh.. thanx lady Benita.. but what did you mean by the 22 hour deadline??! I thought I had 2 days left

Congratulations on an image well done btw, and for submitting your final image :) Good luck

05 May 2005, 12:38 AM
would be SO cool if u managed to do a whole army, but time is against you

anyway looks great, hope u finish and gud luck

05 May 2005, 12:41 AM
Ibn Turab... I was only now updated with your post... strange {:'

Lol.. Ibn Turab.. I was actually thinking of those ideas, and even included some of them in the sketches. There are supposed to be other lions lying on the ground(covered with arrows)... but I think I shouldn't do too many so that I keep the impact of the ratio of agressors/defenders high. I even had the idea of one recieving arrows on his body while shielding the master.. Did you see the arrow shower in the sketch?

Lol, this is soo cool though. :D You are reading ahead :p Many thanx for the precious comments :)

Aheh heh... yeah.. I shouldn't get distracted :D

Wishing you the best

05 May 2005, 12:46 AM
Daa Feng :D Time is indeed against me... or .. am I against the time?... hmm..:curious:
Many thanx, and good luck to you too :)

Wishing you the best

05 May 2005, 02:30 AM
sorry for left a confusion comments.... I mean ROCK Golem in ur last update bout it.. Dat view can add on a Smashing tower details or watever enemies u can think of..I jst think Tower (Which is SOLID OBJECT) Much easier to color than an ANATOMY OBJECT (Such as dragon or other type of organic creatures..(u might need to spent plenty of time to analysis anatomy accurate).

Anyway, Seems like u r more confidence bout the "Armies surround the Master". If u feel u could finish on time. Why not?! SOmetimes u haf to insists ur own will, cuz der might be a few of notty rascal(Like me..hehe.) maybe is not qualify to put any comments that will mess up ur actually very Brilliant idea.

In fact, we are having same concept here. Just the amount of armies we plan on into our art make a HUGE difference.
I hope that u can composite out a strong FEEL bout the relationship amongst M & S. Cuz i got a little problem by my own piece. My master is a boy which is relatively Small size...haha... Still thinking how to obvious the Loyalthy btwn Servants against HIM(the Boy).

Little ideas for "Armies surround the Master" : You can put a Forest as main background. Then draw many dimmed Lights which can depicts ENEMIES. So, u can express there are TONS of ambush inside the Forest instead of DRAWING out ALL OF THEM in such a short hours. After dat, remains some decided characters that are crashing out from the forest.. Make some trees falling down cuz the strong enemies had Crazy strength to break thru everything in front of em. How bout Sand flying in the air... This could be another ACTION PIECE which can left some imagination to viewer.

Can u post up a COMPLETE SKETCH that u decide to paint? So, everyone can see are u goin on wif the right piece?

THe Lion servants....hehe..Cool sketches!

OT: which anime series u are watching now? ... I had FULL-STOP Full Metal Alchemist at 40 something episodes since last week. I wanna concentrate on this contest.. I will carry on the series on this FRIDAY!..WOoooooooooohooooooooo........ It is always FUN to look at other's ppl hardwork than doin ourselves!.

LAith & Turab, thx for viewing my thread! Are u both siblings? Just curious....

05 May 2005, 09:04 AM
Dinodog Jr,

Lol, your comments are very precious, and I thank you very much for them :D Heh heh.. I don't know how brilliant the idea in my head is, or that I'm confident about it.. and like I said I have little to no sense of time(most probably the latter)... but It seems that I am going ahead with this one, so it's difficult to change course at this stage, although I do think that your suggestions on the rock golem should be implemented in an image at some point ;)

We do have a similar idea it seems.. I noticed the little guy with the HUGE weapon when he was just a sketch in white :p I thought it was very cute... heh heh... but look at it NOW! Amaazing... you depicted loyalty by his expression and the servants having lost limbs for him aswell... brilliant!.. but more on that in your thread...

The 'little' ideas that you suggested are brilliant! I haven't really thought of them, except the sand thing...heehee there should be plenty of sand and dust and perhaps even smoke...Basically.. there should be some eclipsing happening.. I hope to portray that affectively. I like the idea of suggesting more of the army without actually drawing them, and the idea of knocking down trees.. GENIUS! Many thanx.

Full Metal Alchemist is a work of genius! Absolutely brilliant.. is what I thought.. The anime I was watching is something that is muuuuch older... I hope to reveal it later with some drawings.

O, Ibn Turab and I are siblings, currently living on different continents though

Many thanx for your comments and time :D

Wish you the best

05 May 2005, 10:05 AM (

Alrighty, I put the rough colors on only 15 monsters... 60 more to go {:O I haven't even drawn the master yet(the main one). This is a test of the dark cloud of the army(16-5-2005). It's supposed to represent the other master in the story as it were.. I don't think I can afford to make more tests. Although I haven't really completed an image before.. I have the process of how to render the image in my head.. Only I didn't really consider time in that process {:S

05 May 2005, 12:49 PM (

Ok... even though I said that I can't afford to make tests on the way... I just couldnt help it {:} First I was worried that the dark soldiers are to bright and colorful.. but once I reverted the image, after playing around with the colors.. I thought that actually, it's a bit too dark, dull and lacks contrast... but I can't deal with this right now.. I'm going to have to test things after I finish coloring

05 May 2005, 01:35 PM (

Well... another one I couldn't help.. it seems that I won't be able to make it in time... but I'll try anyways.. Do I have 10 or 22 hours lef? {:' Makes quite a difference if I know that.

05 May 2005, 05:40 PM (

I realised that this is quite rediculous... seeing as to how I'm detailing a face that most probably would never be seen in the actual image... I don't think that it's bad to detail it... but NOW? I don't have time... and yet I find another distraction ; this post {:)

Ibn Turab
05 May 2005, 12:53 AM
I know it can be difficult to overcome distractions, but concentrate on your goal!

Try to get a full image done, so don't pay too much attention to detail, just work on the atmosphere of the piece: get the leader and companions done...

Then you can do rough colouring of the army...

Good luck!

05 May 2005, 09:52 AM
Ibn Turab, You're a genius! :D

Indeed I forgot about the atmosphere of the piece... I got caught up in the process I had in mind of detailing everything... and in doing so I actually lost the essence of the image(and the process).

Many thanx Ibn Turab... although it doesn't seem that I have enough time now

05 May 2005, 10:05 AM (

05 May 2005, 10:52 AM
Well... I have certainly enjoyed taking part in this challenge :) I've become distracted many times, and have lost the plot near the end.. but I have still done much more than I usually do. I don't know if I can still update this thread or if I have to start a new one if I want to continue the image and post updates.

Many thanx to everyone who participated, for the inspirations and motivation. And for all who commented in this thread, and contributed their precious ideas and time.

Wishing you the bestest :D

05 May 2005, 11:49 AM
sorry Laith..yesterday i took ONE DAY leave to finish my FInal Image. So, it couldn't online and check ur Update.

U had choose the Right color!... SOmehow, the smoke & dust looks abit too HUGE...haha..

Now, u learn to understand Times is Pack up!

I did learnt it at the last COntest but i forgotten the lessons.. Now i learnt TWICE!..

Let's learn the Time Management & self-discpline.. it will takes YEARS.. We better start now!

U can continue this piece at WIP..I will be watching if u won't mind..

U draw the Art stroke in Flash, rite? I was thinking of this method too..haha..

Finally, Cheers up...
We will see in the upcoming contest..ok?!

05 May 2005, 12:15 PM
Dinodog Jr,

Many thanx on all of your comments and your attention. Lol, if only we learn the lessons :p

Indeed the image is done in Flash. The idea is that I use Flash to draw the image and then take it to photoshop for the final effects, including the dust, shading and lighting.

You work fast and have great ideas, but my friend, you definately need to get a drawing tablet! :scream:

Yeah I would like to update my image and would be great if I can get your comments. It's been so exciting working on it.. Well mainly the monster soldiers where I've been distracted. I think they are ~75 ..not so sure.. I might have counted some more than once  I've only done them in the last 3 or 4 days.. again, it's my poor time management. But my wrist started to hurt because of the strain(rusty wrist), and now my whole arm hurts  . Perhaps I spoilt it for far too long and when I was drawing the soldiers I tensed up too much...

Wishing you the best :)

05 May 2005, 03:15 AM
Ohaha....i hurt my left shoulder too.(But i mousing wif Right hand, maybe i was in a nerve & posing very bad when working on it)

Neva felt so intensive b4...

Me too neva expect my current piece took me so many emotional reflection..
too bad, You can't see me struggling on the bed & buried my head in front of pc.. Sitting like idiot how to continue..haha..

Anyhow, i got a Habit which i dun like to start things earlier.. I like to study other entries before i built up one of mine. A contest like this is really need Original & unique idea then goes to color skills. To be frank, i failed my current entry in the Evocative emotions..

Somehow i got huge improvements in myself. Gonna tell u that, my last coloring session was on Mechinflesh.. After dat, i dun concentrate into Digital paint so heavily.

Yeah, Let me paint somemore wif Mouse to firm my decision in buying a watcom tablet! U know, we like to explore so many things. Just afraid i can't stay forever in digital painting.
