View Full Version : Sargent Drawings

The art school I go to (corcoran college of art and design) is attached to the Corcoran gallery of art (literally; we meet in the museum's basement). The gallery is lucky enough to have a collection of over 100 drawings by John Singer Sargent. Sargent is one of my all time favorites, so I've been bugging my drawing teacher since September to get my class an appointment upstairs to have a look at the drawings. We finally were able to do so today. I took some quick photos and have tweaked them so they're presentable here. We were all crowding around and pushing to get closer, so taking pictures was tricky. Hope you all enjoy! I may be able to set up another appointment later and take a look at these by myself. I'll keep you posted if I can take more photos!

I am especially in love with his hand studies.

I am always curious to know how long he spends on these little drawings. There doesn't seem to be much under structure, so I am fairly sure he lays these down in just a few minutes. Every now and then I spot areas where he has erased and adjusted a shape. s10c has a few of these, like on the front of the helmet in the central portrait.

This is the final set. If anyone has photographs they've taken of uncommon sketches/studies that might help us all out, feel free to add to this thread. Also, I'm setting up a trip with some friends to visit the Library of Congress and take a look at some other master drawings. If anyone is in the DC area and interested, please PM me.

What a coincidence! As I read your message, I have a Sargent book wide open in front of my keyboard, ready to pick a painting to start an oil sketch study from :)
btw, I had a chance to see these Sargent paintings two weeks ago in LA (the photo quality doesn't do them any justice).
big thanks for sharing these drawings!!
For those interested, there's a bunch more info on this website http://www.jssgallery.org/

Thanks for these Cicinimo! (Good to see you finally got through. Welcome aboard!)
sargent's drawings translate so much better online than his paintings. even though his compositions are great they just arn't as impressive as seeing in person (like most artwork i guess)
still my fav.

Lovely sketches, so free and accurate at the same time.
I love looking at others' sketches, sometimes even more than their paintings.
