Here is my concept art. The story is about a Necromancer that wanders threw a valley of dead soldier graves and resurects them creating a massive army.

The main undead soldier will have a slight look of sadness on his face perhaps showing that even in death, he is still a slave.

Notes: keep in mind that this is just a very loose concept sketch so my goal was to set up the scene and work out the composition. I will have the lineart posted soon.

What!? Another Longfield!?? :) Cant wait for the colour WIP Mike.

Here is the lineart. It's a lot more defined than the concept sketch but still fairly loose. I don't like to work with tight penciling because it makes me feel too restricted when I paint. Again, there will be more undead soldiers in the backround but I just wanted to focus on the main characters and the composition. I'm not sure if the image will be flipped horizontaly but I'm not concerned with it at this point.

I was kicking around color ideas and at first thought of using greay and blues to help with the gloomy/death feeling of the pic. But after looking at it more I thought a sunrise/sunset with bright yellows and oranges would help with the action going on (Necromancer summoning undead) and give the picture a sense of impending doom.

At this stage I just threw on some very basic earth and sky colors and started blocking in the armor/skin colors. So far it looks like Photoshop threw up but with more blocking on it'll start to take shape.

Very nice lighting. Especially on the soldiers in the back. At the moment the pose has become a bit lost on the standing figure on the right. His arms have become swapped. Also the bottom of his long cloak coincides with the edge of the prone figure (spatially confusing). However, it looks as if you are in effective charge of this piece. Nice one.

Color change. For the heck of it I decided to try painting this piece with blues and greys like I originally thought of and I think it turned out much better so far.

I made some changes to the mountains and pushed them back further into the distance and I also made the line of undead soldiers fade into the distance as well. I'm still just blocking in the colors right now, but because the zombies and mountains go off into the distance, they wont change much.

Comments and crits are welcome.

Thanks for the comments, Jack. Yeah I see that some of the spacial relationships are a bit confusing but that will be fixed later on. Also there will be a mound of dirt around the main zombie which will help seperate him and the Necromancer. Also, the figures will be seperated more with shadows and what not. Right now though I'm just blocking in the colors while working a bit on the distance. I also plan to turn the pic on a angle slightly to add to the drama.

Thanks for the comments and crits!

I like so damm much the colors of the soldiers in BG. Have you considered put a full moon in the sky, the color maybe change, but i think that would be cool in this image. I'll keep my eyes on this thread.

Thanks for the comments and crits, Smash!. I thought of putting in a very faint moon a while ago so I guess I should try it. Hmmm...

I decided to redo my entry. It's the same concept just a different view. I like this better as it gives a much closer look to the main two subjects. Yeah, I know I only have 12 days left to finish, but I'm confident I can get it done in time.

05 May 2005, 03:23 AM (

Here is the line art. There will still be armor on the soldiers but I just have to tweak some ideas I had. It shouldn't take long for me to block in the color... again. Lol.

05 May 2005, 03:14 AM (

Here is my new (and final) concept sketch. I know I'm running out of time but I wasn't pleased with my last attempt, so I felt I had to redo it.

This time I have even more of an emphasis on the 2 main characters and the scene conveys better action as well.

Here is the Line art. At this stage I make sure the perspective that I want is correct and I begin to refine the costume designs. Because the camera is much closer to the subjects, there wont be a busy backround like in my previous attempts.

05 May 2005, 02:22 AM (

I usualy block in all the colors first but because of the deadline being so close I jumped right in and refined the backround and Zombie right away. I still have some tweaking to do on the backround and Zombie but it isn't much. The Necromancer will be fairly easy to do (his costume anyways) but I think I can finish this in time.

Comments and or crits are welcome.

You started to make me nervous changing with so little time, but i think its worth it! :)
The angle of this one is better and more focused. Cant wait to see if you make it in time.

Good Luck!!

Whew! I pulled an all nighter last night and I feel like my eyes are going to explode. Anyways, here is what I currently have. I painted the Necromancer and the the backround is now complete. Just a little longer to go and I'll be done! Comments and crits are always welcome!

05 May 2005, 08:41 AM (

Alright, I'm done! All that's left for me to do is sign my name and it will be complete. This was a fun challenge, though, I wish I had came up with my final concept earlier because I had to rush a lot of this painting. Anyways, it was fun. Good luck guys!
