View Full Version : Basics of Robotic Art

Hey guys, Im interested in modelling and animating a 3D robot, so I was wondering if any of you could point me to a site with examples, tutorials, etc. on the basics of drawing robots. That way, I can design the robot first, which Im obviously intending to be a simple one, and then get to work on the rest.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I've made a few robots but I've not written any tutes on the subject. However I did a google search:- From drawing to 3d (Photoshop). Probably should help you the most out of these links. CGTalk's member, 'imphead' created this 10 step how to, for his front page robot. Manga drawing tutorials. Anime robot creator using Lightwave, some good tutorials on his site. Photoshop robot tutorial. A few drawing tutorials.

Hope these help and thanks for giving me the chance to realise I needed them too.

I have made a load of robots. (and made many mistakes to learn from)
The first step is to think through what the robot will be doing in your animation. What kind of mobility will it have. Why was he made.

Think about your joints. As a person your hips and ankles are ball joints (if they wernt you would be unable to walk!) What range of motion do you need the arms to have. I have made robots in the past only to have them sent back by the animators. (you should act out basic stuff walking picking stuff up with your robots limitations)

Look to other artists robots (or even suits of armor)
that imphead guy has awsome robots. you could check out some warhammer40K stuff too (i think)

i hope that helps
