Heres the situation:

I got this AMD system currently running 98...I know crap OS.

Its a 1.4 Ghz Athlon/Thunderbird
256 pc 133 Ram
80 GB 7200 RPM Harddrive Space

The idea was to have a system to run Max4 on and increase productivity levels. I wish (in retrospect) I'd gone with the Dual Processor system.

Can anyone give me a tip on optimising the System, short of installing NT which I will do anyway.

I's appreciate any Input.

get more ram, 256mb Ram extra at least.
Get a good openGL videocard like a geforce.
Other than that, it appears sufficient enough.

Skip NT and go straight to 2000. I have used Max on 2000 for 18 months hiccup free.

Thanks you guys.

Got more ram because its so wickedly cheap now!
I'm making the switch to 2000 soon.

I have a Gforce 2 Mx200 with 64 mb onboard Ram,
will this suffice? I seem to get some weird viewport errors with
max 4 in OpenGL mode though.

Make sure you're running the latest version of NVIDIA's drivers. Actually go back one version, and it seemed a little more stable. The card itself is a good card and will work pretty well unless you're going to be doing really poly heavy scenes.
