I thought I would approach this contest with a "Good Master" and servants theme. A mighty and just king(master) went on a campaign with his beloved band of soldiers(servants). One of his soldiers fell into a deadly trap laid down by the enemies, and was grievously injuried. The king being a caring and valiant leader chose to risk his own kingly life to rescue a servant whom he called his own. Without a moment of hesitation, he climbed down the pit of peril and reached out to his lost one. The soldiers with an unanimous voice uttered a silent pledge, "this is the One whom we will die serving, for he would lay down his own for any one of us."

Please let me know what your thoughts are. Thanks!

Hey Sunny

Welcome to the challenge and good luck! There is a good group of people here. I like the idea, a good and benevolant master.

Very nice diagonal composition.
An unconventional take on the master and servant relationship, an intriguing and moving one.
I see from the roughs that you are setting the time period at around the middle ages?
Would probably be more interesting if you give a fantasy or sci-fi spin using the same theme.

Ive got to say so far yours has been the most touching/emotional theme I've seen. lol I guess I'm just a softy, but I think that's awesome and I cant wait to see it finished!
good luck!

I have been too busy with my other obligations and plagued also by this annoying flu, but finally I am able to focus on this contest. Here is a quick study of one of the servants.

Here is another study, and this one is of the king.

04 April 2005, 12:34 AM (

Here is another study, and this one is of the king.

Love the study of the king. Looking good so far, keep it up!

04 April 2005, 03:56 PM
I like these studies. One suggestion, (I know they are comps) add some more color in the skin tones. Think of it as warm side v cool side, or a variation of warm hues if you are going to stay warm. Again, i know these are comps, just a thought. keep em coming.

Here is my line rendition. I think I am ready to start painting.

04 April 2005, 05:52 AM
Looking good Sunny! And welcome to the contest, im looking forward to seeing this develope.

I finally started painting this image. I've also made some changes : I pushed the soldiers in the backgound further back in distance; the injured soldier is no longer so "mortally wounded". He had a stick penetrating his stomach in my early sketch. Now instead he has been shot several times with arrows and then fallen into a pit, but he will live when his master rescues him.

Looking good Sunny, I like the colors you have going there, however I would kick up the saturation in some of the areas for emphasis.

Other than that it's a look'n a good! :p

04 April 2005, 06:35 AM (

Finally I got to work on this a bit more today. So here it is, and more will follow soon.

04 April 2005, 04:52 AM (

Here is another work in progress update.

04 April 2005, 06:45 AM (

I've just worked on this image for a little bit. I darkened the bottom part of the Master's cape and the left side of his armor. More to come.

04 April 2005, 08:26 PM
Looking nice, Sunny. Maybe you should darken the cape again where it falls behind his body? I do like how it's coming along. (And I've finally posted my work thus far, by the way. Pop on by - I'd appreciate your opinion, though I'm still in the early stages.)

04 April 2005, 07:09 PM (

Here is another work in progress update. I started working on the three servants above the master. I darkened the cliff right behind the master a little bit for better contrast. Any suggestion or comment?

04 April 2005, 10:08 PM (

Here is a close up on the different faces. Don't mind the hair monster; it doesn't bite! (For you, Candice.)

05 May 2005, 06:44 AM (

Here is another work in progress update. These are the new parts that were finished for this update : three soldiers above the king, the king's sword and the injured soldier. I've also gotten rid of the soldier who was kneeling at the edge of the other cliff in the far background. I thought he was there rather pointlessly and wasn't adding anything to the narrative. What do you think? Good riddance?

05 May 2005, 10:47 PM (

Here is yet another update. I think I am almost done. Just some final touch-ups. What do you think?

05 May 2005, 03:49 AM
Love the color scheme.. it's definently almost done.. I'd just add a little more texture in the background rocks .. it looks too smooth... other than that.. It looks good

05 May 2005, 03:15 PM (

Here is my final image. This was my first CG contest. It has been fun and enjoyable. My best wishes to everyone! See you at the next contest.

05 May 2005, 03:33 PM (

My last update's color seems to be off a little. It looks like the embedded color profile didn't get used. Does anyone have such problem?

05 May 2005, 03:43 PM (

Another update for color correction; hopefully, it will come out right this time.

05 May 2005, 03:45 PM
interesting concept. Maybe add a few more characters in the background

05 May 2005, 04:07 PM
Lovely image and color choices, oh yes :) I agree with Gord about the characters though, or just some vaguely hinted background like forest or mountains or something? :)

05 May 2005, 11:47 PM
Thanks for all of your inputs. They are all very constructive. I will see what I can do.

05 May 2005, 05:20 AM
Just two more days left, best wishes to everyone!

05 May 2005, 04:19 PM
It looks great! Good luck with the competition and good luck with the rest of school!
