Phang Su Hwee has entered the Master and Servant 3D.

Challenge Page (

Latest Update: Modeling: Finally.. the young master is born... un-rig... (

Finally finish the model of my young master. Spent quite sometime messing around with the creases on his clothes. Been looking around at people's jeans these few days while traveling thru & flow from work... hmm... The sword design came out pretty simple since the final image won't be seeing much of it. Might add more details to it though if time allows...

A thought came up to me while I was working on this model. Might go for another concept, this current one is goin to take too much time from me... lesson learned... will see how things goes first after I finished my creature model.

Good luck to myself...

Kind of goin slow.... anyway.... took time off after work to do my concept in thumbnails.... kind of prefer this over the rest... will eventually finetune this idea into a clearer image... still at its very initial stage... Might not make it to complete though... but will try to get it done...

Servant creature & character attire not out yet... trying to nail down the rough composition & environment first. The setting is up on a huge tree branch in the middle of the forest... with streaks of rays hitting onto the foreground... C&Cs welcome.

04 April 2005, 01:48 PM (

Here's a quick test on the colors. Just trying out a rough one to get the feel of it. Would love to hear some comments on it. Cheers.

Here's a small update on the modeling for my little master character. Basically just rough out the build of him, still needs pretty much work on it though..

04 April 2005, 05:50 PM (

Further update on the modeling for my young master. Body will be covered with shirt eventually, so won't be goin into details on it.. Pants will be further refine later for creases and all. Hmm... hopefully will be able to get this model done by this weekend so i can work on the rest.. phew...

04 April 2005, 10:38 PM
very nice sketch and a good start on the modeling. keep updating :)

04 April 2005, 03:46 AM
Thanx guys :) Haven't been updating for a day or two now... will give an update tonite hopefully can get this model out or if not, close to finish model.
Man.... I'm going slow.... :argh:

04 April 2005, 06:13 PM (

Ok, as expected.. couldn't get to finish this model yet. still more to go...

Think I just spent too much time trying to get the result I want. Currently still messing around with his attire, met some difficulties though in making him a good looking shirt with thickness & creases.. sigh.. needs more experimenting on that topic in the meanwhile. Would appreciate if anyone got some tips on doing the shirt thing. Personally love the way Squaresoft did for FFX clothings :) So here's the hand model.

04 April 2005, 06:18 PM (

& here's the entire body so far.. Till next update, cheers.

04 April 2005, 01:41 AM

04 April 2005, 02:13 AM
Thanx guys for your encouragement.:)

And smaddl, yah I agree.. but it's trickier than it seems... hmm... somehow I'm getting closer to what I wanted though after playing around with it last nite, just need more studying & experiments.. Thanx man :)

Will work further more b4 updating again... probably after I finish up this model. Will appreciate more suggestions or crits. Cheers!

Hello RealCapri
thanks for visiting my thread  I wish icould model this way too. By the way, I think I must leave the 3D competition.

Keep going on

04 April 2005, 03:37 AM
You've flattered, spacesnail :) Seen your 3D work, am sure u can do this. Anyway, good luck to your 2D challenge, you are going strong there

04 April 2005, 06:57 PM
Not too much to say at this point...

You seem to have managed the character well. I had expected him a little bit more 'punkish' or 'Goku'ish.. but I guess that will just come with the rest.
I'll be looking forward for the creature to evolve aswel.

I understand your worry about getting the composition out in the open first, but it would be a good idea to have a sort of stroy running as you think things over. I am sure you actually have an idea but don't really have it clear enough to type it out (Or I hope so). Because there seems to be some sort of a relationship between.

About your model.. there is a little part that took my intrest. To how high his thumb is raised. It is rotated a little bit too much to face to the side rather than up.
Nothing you can't handle. But you may want to get to it before you rig the guy.

Things look promising;
Good Luck!

04 April 2005, 06:41 PM
BlackDidThis, thanx for your comments :) Yah, I was also thinking of making him slightly more punkish earlier... but I have the habit of making my hero slightly more good-looking... hmm... maybe I really need to kick this habit to make more breakthru in my models... haha...

Btw, just sort of finished my master model, working on the rig halfway now... Frankly, the thumb positioning & angle have always been bothering me, thanx for pointing me out on that, will watch that out in my next model though... rigging already halfway thru.. & this is the part I'm most UNinterested in.... Will be working on the creature next probably after my rough rig to pose the master... won't want to spend too much time rigging him... **yawn..**

Thanx again for your time

Phang very nice modeling you did there, let me guess you're a FinalFantasy fan

Great work

04 April 2005, 12:39 AM
great! i'm impressed by how you improved your modeling skills. very nice character.

04 April 2005, 12:54 PM
:) good luck to yourself :)
yop time is running so it's smart to keep on going.... but obviously more details in the skirt for exemple wouldn't be bad.... hey ya know, thoose crasy costume details in the FF saga... from scratched clothes in the first ones to amazing cultural mix in the FFX combo... but maybe if you don't have time to modelise thoose details, you might get time to upgrade with a texturing work?

like the face (eyes line) of this guy

04 April 2005, 01:49 PM
arlutik > Thanx man! Yah, u r right, I'm love Final Fantasy :) FF5 is the first RPG game I've laid my hands on during my secondary school days... Brings back alot of fond memories; all those sleepless nites back then...

smaddl > Thanx pal! Glad you like it too :) I tend to spend pretty much time tweaking the face of my characters... & they'll normally turn out to be another hunkie... maybe I just need to break away from that to give my future characters more variations; if you don't see that in my next human, that means I've failed... lol... I really like your way of modeling characters, really organic feel... something I need further improving on also right now... Cheers!

shtl > Thanx man.. I dun normally wish myself good luck... haha... Yah, probably will have to depend more on texturing to bring out more details later on... hmm... hope my texturing holds up well enough. Modeling creases really give me those headaches... was initially thinking of using cloth simulation to do all that for me, but ... I didn't have the plugin to do that... don't really like to use built-in cloth simulator to do that, u'll vomit blood trying to get the result for anything other than flat plane... Glad you like his looks :)

Was planning to change my concept to another simplier scene, but my master & servant will still be in it. The picture just pop into my mind this noon while riding in a bus, & I kind of like it :) Probably will update a quick painting some day later. Ok, now's time to headache on the rig & creature.

04 April 2005, 08:14 PM
Very nice work Phang... I like the hair and the realism to the face.. good job.. keep at it!

05 May 2005, 01:47 PM
Thanx ||) |V| |^| :) However will not be able to finish it for the challenge now.. hardly work on it during the weekdays oso, tired after work. Most probably will transfer to WIP if couldn't finish, trying to do as much as I can now. Currently doing more research on the beast's muscles, hoping to make it a better model, considering to use it to do some animation in future also. Cheers!

05 May 2005, 02:42 PM
If you are changing the subject to make it easier to finish I could understand..
I just hope that you spare the time that you would need to make it in time. The modeling so far is really showing very good progress.
As time taking as it is growing to be for you. The results are rewarding.

I am glad to hear that at least you shall not let it go... even if after the contest

Good Luck!

05 May 2005, 02:56 PM
Hello Realcapri

Well just like BlackDidThis, if you don't get enough spare time, i really hope we'll can follow this one entry elsewhere, like wip section....cause it's a clean and nice work you started here, so

05 May 2005, 04:10 PM
i'll be looking for your updates, here or in the wip section. keep going :)

05 May 2005, 02:13 PM
BlackDidThis > Thanx for your support man. I'll definitely take time out for this, but I won't be burning midnite oil to get it done for the challenge though... Won't want to rush this out just to meet the deadline, which I oso doubt it can be finish on time. Needed more rest, pretty stress at work recently bcos of some deadline thingy too...
I sure do learn alot from this challenge, it's really rewarding :)

shtl & smaddl > Thanx alot for your support guys! Partly bcos of my work, I've got to take some free-time off to study other stuffs, there's so much I've got to learn... no matter what I'll still take time out to finish M&S.

Good luck to you guys on the challenge!!

05 May 2005, 12:15 AM
Dude don't stop there's still time.

The young master looks great  I really like the huge Sword.

Maybe a close up shot with only the beast's head showing would be easier to finish in time.

Good luck.

05 May 2005, 05:23 PM
ken T, thanx for ur suggestion & stopping by :) I've already intended to let this challenge go, my time is just not enough for me to finish it this round, maybe next challenge.. however will still carry on this in WIP after the challenge. Good luck to your M&S!

05 May 2005, 08:05 PM
I hope you'll continue this WIP, this is a find concept... And even if you don't make all What you had decided to do!

05 May 2005, 02:11 AM
Thanx David for your kind words & support :) I'll still continue work on this in WIP, but might not be so soon, learning some new stuffs & trying to improve further before moving on for this. Good luck to your M&S
