Latest Update: Final Image: The Swarm! (

Thanks to everyone!

THE SWARM. The hive has gotten to big. its time for the Queen to find a new place. In a rush of activity and noise, she leaves the old hive with a large contingent of bees. Behind in the care of a new younger Queen, the old hive will continue to thrive with an emerging brood and the bees returning from their daily work.
Following her scouts, the Queen frequently rests. She will do this several times, before she again sits as MASTER of the Hive.

Just trying out a idea.....Looking for some feed back.......I also see someone else has a female/bee theme on here, but I think mine is approaching it from a different angle. But if its believed iam takeing his/her ideal ill gladly think off something else. 'sides at this point its only a concept sketch....So....let me know.....thanks!

Following her scouts, the Queen frequently rests. She will do this several times, before she again sits as MASTER of the Hive.

I decided to stay with this concept. and start to flush out the background.

Your pics don't seem to have uploaded properly & there's just the small thumbnail images working at the moment, but from these it looks really good- nice figure drawing & I love the earthy tones & transparency in the colour sketch.

The composition is subtle & the colour 'stripes' idea is clever, but possibly too subtle for the purposes of this contest I reckon. You should have a go at experimenting with more dynamic layouts, & maybe you could mix some abstracted forms with the realistic figure a la Klimt.

04 April 2005, 11:49 PM
Thank you very much Matt for the kind words and the tips. iam still building up the background hopefully it will start coming together. Iam very new on this site and iam have trouble up-loading a good size picture ( if anyone can point me in the right direction to figure this out, i'd be very grateful )

bonjour! hallo! privet! ciao! and hello to all the Cg talk members.

04 April 2005, 01:20 PM

04 April 2005, 09:43 PM
'Ello 'ello! Joe, thanks for the kind words! Hvala lijepa! Stjepan.

04 April 2005, 01:43 PM
I like the initial idea but I think the viewer might get lost with you character looking like a real woman an those being normal bees. The painting is really good but just work on the connection factor a bit.

04 April 2005, 10:49 PM
Thanks for the input Lamair. A buddy of mine pointed out the samething to me ( people not getting the connection visually ) so iam thinking of changeing somethings .....will see.

Zdravo! Privet! Domo Domo! Ciao! Hola! and hello! Once again to all the CG Talk members.
Building up more color on our Queen. flushing out the hair a bit. The weekend coming up, so ill have more time to spend on this piece. ( And more time to look at all the other fine art on this site. )

My humble website:

04 April 2005, 04:54 AM
Your doing a really good job so far, can't wait to see it finished.

04 April 2005, 07:03 AM
hello there, i like your concept but the woman has to be more distinct as a master to those bees...the framing could be improved by making the figure smaller because the hair and right thumbs are touching the borders...looking forward to your update:thumbsup:

04 April 2005, 01:37 PM
Thanks for the input G-hand! The Queen well expose, divulge, impart, bring out, display, disclose and show her Mastery over the Apis Mellifera
very soon! Stay tune!! :) And I know, thouching the borders is a "no no" but in this case I like it. it works for me.

04 April 2005, 05:15 AM (

Hello again Fellow artist from all over the world! Did some fleshing out of the Queens skin, and started blocking in the bees.

04 April 2005, 07:40 AM
Cool concept, can't wait to see the finished image.

Good luck

04 April 2005, 08:22 AM
It is a kind of picturer depending on the technical quality much more than a concept. And of course your technic is perfect. Really nice picture...

04 April 2005, 10:56 AM
This is turning out to be an amazing piece of art! Sorry I haven't noticed it before...

Great approach to the 'queen bee', those flesh tones are so subtle and warm! Love it. Nice classic feel to this painting. Wonderful pose too... although I'd like to see just a little more breathing room above her head and possibly more landscape on the right (showing a bit more of the swarm?)

Beautiful style you have going there, however and I can't wait to see this one finished! Wa-hoo! Keep it up.

04 April 2005, 12:09 PM
Hi Dirk! Thanks alot! :)

04 April 2005, 12:23 PM
Dobry den, Ludek! Thanks for the kind words. For me the picture is not even half done I have a ways to go. The concept part will.... "bee"...... "Swarming" in very soon. :)

Grant! Hello neighbour from the North. Thank you for the kind words! The classic feel is what iam gunning for. ( love William Bouguereau works.)
And trust me the Swarm is comming!! Good day eh. :)

04 April 2005, 01:58 PM
Excellent painting so far. The only compositional complaints I would make are that it looks a little too symetrical, and the bees' paths are a bit too random. I know the bees are just little doodles right now. But if they were flying in some kind of consistant direction you could play with emotions between the woman and the bees a bit stronger. What I mean by that is to have the bees really be only one character in the picture, ala winnie the poo. :)

04 April 2005, 05:16 AM (

Hello once again Ladies & Gents of the international art world, here is yet another color WIP. Ok guys were right i opened up the top and side of the drawing, and the space makes the piece alot better.
Also did more of fleshing out the skin of our Master Queen bee.
Yeah yeah i hear ya....."where are the bees????" I started in on them also, the "clothing" she will be wearing well be all made up of her little Servents. ( hope i can pull this off ) : ) So stay tuned!

04 April 2005, 07:03 PM
Wow, you've got astonishing skills :surprised (misc.php?do=getsmilies&wysiwyg=1&forumid=0#)
The girl looks really reel. Waiting to the bees coming to life

04 April 2005, 07:48 PM
pretty body and nice skin tones so far, really good job, Christopher :)

In my point of view, you could add a bit more colors to her skin to make it more "rich"... not colorful, but rich. Maybe indicate a mood by adding bit blueish or reddish shades to the skintones; and where the darker value blends into the lighter value, make the edge more saturated.

04 April 2005, 08:28 PM
the image looks good. i can see it'll be great when done. couple of details...
she looks like shes got something stuck to the side of her mouth, also the shadow used on the hands is too intense - it looks like her nuckes are bruised and the hands are maybe a little broad. gl with it.

04 April 2005, 08:43 PM
Oh, yes! That added bit of space around her helps alot... but, but... (cowers sheepishly) could you pleeeeeeease add just a little more room to one side or the other (I'd suggest on the left, since she's looking in that direction). You could add more bees in that extra space, like a flowing bit of 'bee drapery' caressing her hand?

Anyhoo, that's just a preference of mine (I like lots of breathing room). Your painting skills are definately kickin' some ass... I can't wait to see the swarm take shape! I definately think this one will be in the top running when it's finished... it has a nice elegant quality, which lends itself to longevity... a MASTERPIECE, if you will.

Keep up the great work. I'll check back for your updates, bro...

Cheers... oh, (ahem)... EH!

04 April 2005, 11:43 PM
* Emmanuel Charon, Merci beaucoup. You have skills yourself! I have seen your Master and servent artwork very nice. merci encore.

This is coming along very nicely man. you might just want to smooth out her stomach a tiny bit more before you add in the swarm. If you are doing it as I write this then totaly ignore my ramblings.

04 April 2005, 04:36 AM
Thanks Tariq. Yeah her stomach looks alittle funky.....

04 April 2005, 05:07 AM

Only change here ( and a big one i think! ) I opened up the picture even more! For me it gives the feeling of movement, and more depth. the lesson learnd here for not forget the basics! 04 April 2005, 10:58 PM

04 April 2005, 11:03 PM
Absolutely stunning Samuraikuroi!

Great guesture, flawless skin tones, exquisite style. I love this piece. I noticed you started with a warm toned underpainting... do you start all you pieces this way? I use a similar technique, and find it really helps create a nice overall feeling of warmth and unity in the work...

No crits here. Can't wait to see the final.

04 April 2005, 06:10 PM
Very beautiful entry Samuraikuroi, really. It' a good pose, nice lights and soft colors. Good overall mood. Will check it back soon for your next updates.

04 April 2005, 06:39 PM

Gutenabend-Herren Dank für die freundlichen Wörter : )

04 April 2005, 10:59 PM
looking great dude, i thought that bee in the foreground is a pic:scream:

04 April 2005, 12:25 AM
My first visit to this page. Very nice work!

04 April 2005, 11:33 AM
Your technique's impeccable, very impressive. Your coloring, though, blends together elements that should be more distinct to add to the effect. To put more focus on the character especially, you might consider reinforcing the contrast between character and background.

Then, I was thinking that adding a lot more bees to the setting and give them a swarm-like pattern---like the coordinated motion in fish schools---would be an interesting approch. What do you think?

:) <- Lutz

04 April 2005, 12:21 PM
the paint of the woman is very realistic, very good work on the character, the background is perhaps too pastel

04 April 2005, 03:25 PM
* Thanks alot Arknet! yeah, all the bees are and will bee hand drawn.

*Good day eh, Neighbor from the North. : ) Thanks Gord. I still have a ways to go before
I am done.

* Guten Tag Lutz! Thanks for the comments and thoughts! But this puppy is long from being done, lol, I have millons of bees to put in. and yes I was doing them in a "swarm" effect.

04 April 2005, 03:31 PM
Bonjour et bon après-midi Laurent! Thanks for stoping by. Merci for the kind words but again looooong from "beeing" done. :banghead: :)

04 April 2005, 03:57 PM
the lady looks really good, its spot on proportionately, its gonna be alot of effort to do paint the bees, lol,i'd sure love to see it painted and wth alot of them~ :scream: good luck mate~

05 May 2005, 03:14 AM (

Good evening fellow late night artist.

Some more of the little servants join the party.....But, mabey I think they have thrown off the lighting a bit.....

So .....Sleepy, : ) I need a fresh pair of eyes to look at this. Any crits, will be more than welcome.

05 May 2005, 05:12 AM
Very nice. Very nice indeed. I do, however, wonder how it is she taught the bees to cover just the parts of her required to get a PG rating. :D Have you considered trying to make the distribution of the bees appear a little more random and just have coincidentally covered the appropriate locations? Just a thought. I look forward to where it's going.

05 May 2005, 05:25 AM
Very cool. Great Painting!

05 May 2005, 09:48 AM
Very good painting so far, I like it alote, good work on that bee in the front

05 May 2005, 10:17 AM
Absolutely fab, did you use a reference for the girl, and how did you come up with this idea? Its so original and executed so well! Im amazed there are only 4 pages of replies here.

05 May 2005, 03:48 PM
* Whaasss up Clint! Thanks for the kind words, hopefully wheniam done the Swarm will look alot more " random" than this WIP. And with the Queens pheromone theses little
Apis mellifera will do just about anything. ( man...i know more about bees now than i really want to..... ) :hmm:

* Good day mate. Thanks Cameron for the kind works.

* Good day eh, thanks Gerard!

* Thank you very much Jannis!! Yes I used Photo reference for the Women and the Bees. The idea just hit me when I read the master and servant Challenge, it seem so..natural.
And there are alot of Fantastic works on here that have a few pages on them, I try to look at as much as I can. This site is really fantastic, I hope the creators know they have pure gold here!!

05 May 2005, 12:43 AM
Oooooh, this is progressing nicely! Yes, very nice indeed. You know I'm gonna want just the nude version of her for my wallpaper, right? LOL.

One small suggestion... the bees' wings look a little too white. Perhaps they should be a little more transparent with a dark brown hue? I know when they're flying, bee wings are almost invisible (so you kinda HAVE to take creative lisence with them to make 'em show up). When they're crawling on stuff (naked 'queens' for example) they'd appear transparent, acting as a darker overlay of the colour on their backs. You may want to experiment until you find something that works for you, but anything to make the wing blur less white.

Other than that small crit, I think this piece is damn near flawless. I LOVE IT! :applause:

Keep up the awesome work my friend.

05 May 2005, 03:46 AM
Hey, thank you very much for the kind words Grant, (that wallpaper can be aranged :) )
I agree the wings are too white, working on a solution.

05 May 2005, 03:52 AM
Very nice, adjusting the wings will help alot, looking forward to the next post.

05 May 2005, 06:31 AM
I agree that she could just be naked in some parts, or wearing maybe a skanky outfit but the bees should be more random in their distribution over her body. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought she was wearing a sheer slip, you could try that also.

I would make her coloring more vivid, it seems rather dull looking for a summer day or whatever...your pose really reminds me of my favorite artist and movement, JW Waterhouse of the Pre-Raphaelite movement.

I think the ribs show too much, it's not that flattering.

I would consider using some richer colors somewhere in the painting, maybe her hair or cheeks or something...and it has somewhat to do with the lighting, it isn't very exciting and looks like an overcast day.

05 May 2005, 10:10 PM
* Thanks Werezoo working on the wings. :)

* Thanks for the Comments and crits Emily Su. The bees on her body are not random at all, and they are not supposed to "bee". She is Nude, and with her will over the
Apis mellifera she is controling them to cover herself, by makeing Clothing. If i do this right the bees will look like apparel

As for the lighting and skin, I was shooting for a early morining type of light. Her skin I didn't want a "Normal" skin coloring, this Queen is keep in a chamber most of the time
If anything she should be more white, but I didnt want that look/feel for this painting. Also I think the ribs are fine, didn't want to do a "Sexy pinup" or a chesecake glamor shot. I wanted the woman to be a "Plain Jane" or "average looking". the shift of her weight is pushing her ribs against to her skin.

05 May 2005, 10:23 PM
nice idea
nice work

05 May 2005, 11:28 PM
looks great dude, jst a thought, maybe place the bee's randomly, their wings look a lil uniformedly placed...keep it up:thumbsup:

05 May 2005, 04:22 AM
Thanks Levent. working on it Orville, and thanks! :)

05 May 2005, 05:09 AM
Hehe, hpslashluvr expressed in 1 part what i was just about to going to write. the bees just concentrate a bit too much on certain parts of her what makes it look like a bees-censor-ship, and not as natural part of the creation.
another small sugestion was to saturate the image a bit, the blue amount is toning down the allover colors a bit hard, makes it cold. myabe go for a a bit more of a golden sunlightm the componets offer that. :)
of course all suggestions are just my own persoonal taste :) keep it up, looking forward to your next update :)

05 May 2005, 04:19 AM
Hello, Sacha Diener. Thanks for the crits!

05 May 2005, 04:20 AM
double post :hmm:

05 May 2005, 02:22 PM
It almost looks too good!

If I was to say something, it would be(e) that the wings might be a bit too white?

05 May 2005, 03:45 PM
Thanks O. Martin. I still have a few "bugs" to work out and in. :)

05 May 2005, 02:22 AM (

Love this one from the first time I saw it. Keep it up.

One thing watch it with the bees and the background they look a little too similar for now.

05 May 2005, 12:09 PM
Thank you very much Nox! :)

05 May 2005, 12:21 PM
I think this work is wonderful. Beautiful, delicate, remarkably original.

WOW, this is cool! hav'nt seen this one till now.. great concept. Needs more contrast personaly.

05 May 2005, 05:07 PM
Very interesting work!

05 May 2005, 05:21 PM
This has to one of my favs for sure. I love the concept, colors, the pose, all very nice. I understand the compositional choices here, but the large foreground bee grabs my attention just a tad too much, maybe a few more slightly smaller or similar sizes and position to lead your eye into the piece? Just a thought...Great work really!

Good luck!

Interesting idea and it looks great! It looks balanced, but somehow the green area on the top takes too much attention. well, I guess it isn't anything serious.

05 May 2005, 12:20 AM
Nice Movement in the body. good Job and good luck.

05 May 2005, 02:45 AM
* Tja, Teemu! thanks for takeing the time to look at my piece. I think the green works vey well. ( but i have been stareing at this for almost a month :) )

Hola Bryce! And thank you! :)

05 May 2005, 03:01 AM
Samuraikuroi: Great image! Here are some suggestions for refinement: Try bringing the color brightness of the background (from the girl's shoulders to the bottom of the picture) down just a little. This will increase the contrast between your figure and the background. This will also help the bees to stand out a little more.

Really great detail and excellent painting so far. Keep up the good work. I look forward to seeing the final picture!

05 May 2005, 03:15 AM
Hey Tony! Thanks, I will try that. :)

05 May 2005, 03:44 AM
great work!
amzing detail!!:bounce: i agree with TMArtist.and i thing the important detail in this piece is the lady's portrait.her hair need some brightness.
good luck to u.:)

05 May 2005, 05:17 AM
Hopefully you can add some varied depth to the different bees, if I'm making any sense. Beautiful work! Good luck!
